Book Description
The classic resource for undergraduate microbiology laboratory courses just keeps getting better. The self-contained, clearly illustrated exercises and four-color format make Microbiological Applications: A Laboratory Manual in General Microbiology the ideal lab manual. Appropriate for either a majors or non-majors lab course, Benson assumes no prior organic chemistry course has been taken.
Customer Reviews:
IT COVERED BOTH TECHNIQUES AND PRECAUTIONS.......2003-03-30
Apart from hinting that this book is more expensive than I had expected, there is no negative comment I have for it.
It is a well-defined lab manual, which will be useful for both students and investigative scientists. The book covered all aspect of microbiology: including related parasitology topics.
It explained various methods used in the identification and classification of all types of microorganisms. High-level undergraduates should appreciate the directives it gave concerning culture-media preparation, as well as sequential isolation of bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and microscopic algae. The same applies to its handling of general microscopy: including the advantages and disadvantages of each type of microscope. This is a very fine companion, which discussed every technique and precaution used in contemporary microbiology lab.

a good place to start llama packing.......2002-06-30
Although I would like to see a new, updated edition, this is still a great book on llama packing. It is concise and easy to read. It even comes with some good recipes.
A well written guide to packing with llamas........1998-07-28
I've read every book on llama packing that I could get my hands on. This one gets my nod. It is more concise and well-written than other texts on the subject, and deals with the details of food, equipment, and pannier organization quite well. The pack-trip checklist at the end of the book is well conceived. This book is probably the most up-to-date of the books on the subject, but it does have one bit of outdated information: it states that llamas can begin to carry packs at the age of two, when in fact the new consensus is that they should not begin to carry significant weight until at least the age of three-and-a-half.

Customer Reviews:
enjoying in putting to use in cold maine waters............2005-08-05
some of the review are too critical. The author does a great job of breaking down surfing etiquite as well as providing beginning, intermediate and advanced tips that can be used for all surfers. I have checked out other books and while they are good I find this book to be a great reference for those of us who try to surf as often as we can. the conditioning tips are very progressive and opened new facets of training for myself and some friends.
Fair & Honest Review.......2005-01-01
I feel some of the other reviews were a too harsh. I first read the book at Borders and really liked it :) Obviously no book or video compares to time spent in the water but I found the book to be very good and informative. Most "learn to surf" books always seem to contain the same basic info (paddling, popping-up, duck-diving) but this book goes far beyond and can be appreciated by the advancing-beginner & intermediate surfers looking to improve. I'm hoping to teach a surfing class at the college I work for & would seriously consider recommending this book for any surfing students. The other book I really liked was Taj Burrow's Book of Surfing but I believe is for more advanced surfers and contains too much surf jargon & slang for the beginners.
Surfing and skiing are they the same, no way........2004-06-08
After surfing for over 15 years no book can really teach you how to surf. Skiing is far from surfing, in fact a swim coach would probably have a better idea of how to condition for surfing. I would say put down your cash for some surf wax and get out, there is no need to buy this book. Seems like the author trying to cash in on surfing and can he surf, maybe but not very many years in the water.
THOSE WHO CAN DO, THOSE WHO CAN'T TEACH.......2004-01-11
This author has all the jargon down but I bet he's a big kook with a lot of degrees who's cashing in on surfing. If you want to surf better surf more! It's not what you do but how you execute it, you don't learn it in a book you learn it on the water. I don't know what I was thinking, why do I want to learn surfing from a skiing coach?
A thorough analysis of the sport of surfing.......2003-04-10
I have been surfing for 20 years and I have yet to read a book that breaks down the essentials of surfing as well as this book does. It's very easy to read and contains a lot of helpful photos. I picked up numerous tips on technique and cross-training that have already improved my surfing!
Book Description
Millions of people dream of one day writing a book, selling it to a major publisher and watching it climb the New York Times Best Seller list . For many that dream will remain just that
a dream. Not that they don't have talent and determination but because they have not learned how the publishing business works
what it takes to get a book sold. The main difference between a published author and an equally talented aspiring writer is that the successful author has learned how to package and sell his work.
To demystify the process of getting a book written and sold to a publisher, Robert Bly draws entirely on his first-hand experiences as one of America's most prolific published authors with a total of 45 books published and more under contract.
In How To Get Your Book Published, Bly for the first time reveals the immensely successful techniques he has developed over the last 18 years.
* Ten effective ways to come up with saleable book ideas.
* The eight essential steps to getting a nonfiction book published.
* How to write a winning content outline.
* Developing a powerful book proposal.
* Finding a literary agent to represent you.
* Negotiating the book contract including author's advances and royalties.
* A look at the pros and cons of self-publishing.
* Directories of literary agents, major publishers, ghostwriters, editors and book doctors to help get your book into shape.
* Actual proposals for books Bly successfully sold to publishers.
* One complete book contract with Bly's commentary.
* NEW Self-Publishing Options ...Print-on-Demand & Internet Publishing.
Customer Reviews:
Great starting point for beginners.......2007-06-04
Robert Bly's book is a wonderful introduction to publication. The text is logically written without a lot of fluff. He clearly details each step from idea conception to press releases and marketing. The appendixes are filled with valuable information: contacts, sample forms and formatting, edited pages of his own proposals. He includes some excellent details like how many words fit on a manuscript page versus how many fit on a typeset (book print) page and how many pages make a book. He does an excellent job encouraging new writers to truly evaluate their ideas -- is it really a book or just a series of magazine articles? Please note this book is only for NONFICTION writers.
The book is definitely DATED. Options in self-publishing and print-on-demand have greatly improved since the writing of this book. He has very few references to web publishing and nothing about blogs or ezines.
Overall Rating: Good for a beginner, but there are better books. I recommend Susan Page's Shortest Distance Between You and a Published Book and Michael Larsen's How to Write a Book Proposal
Inside and Personal - a fun book to read........2006-02-03
I didn't expect this book to be much fun to read, but it's easy to read, not heavy on theory or preachy: it's down to earth, practical advice. You get a feeling how this guy does it. Whatever he does, he wants to write about it: when Bly watches TV, he's there with a notepad - really! He wrote a book on Star Trek trivia. Even if you're not a writer, this is a fun book to read.
No "FLUFF" book on the REAL secrets to book publishing.......2005-04-12
I would highly suggest this book to anyone looking to improve thier book proposals. Bob Bly is the author of 50 books, regularly writes for Writer's Digest and has enjoyed a lucrative career as a copywriter. He knows what makes book proposals work. In simple, strait-forward intruction, he spills everything he knows so that the rest of us can get published. If you want a book with no "fluff," only practical tips that make a REAL DIFFERENCE in your writing career, don't hesitate. Grab this book up right now.
This book works!.......2004-12-23
Three years ago I bought Bob Bly's book ("How to get Your Book Published") and followed his advice. His practical step-by-step instructions guided me in finding my niche and writing my book proposal (he provides templates which are simple to use) and after submitting to 4 publishers 2 of them sent me book contracts (and I got an advance with an option for my next book). My book is now avialable and was published by a well respected publishing house in the psychology field. If you are serious about writing your non-fiction book and do not want to self-publish then this is the book for you.
I truly believe that if it were not for this book my dream of being a published author would not have been possible. Feel free to check out my book (right here on Amazon).
Lisa B. Moschini
Wonderful book.......2003-01-02
This is power packed book full of the type of information an embryo writer is looking. One of the biggest questions asked is where do I start? This book addresses that question and much more. It takes a person through the whole process, how to start, sell, and market. There are lists of potential agents, editiors, and publishers. I highly recommend this book to future and current writers. There is something here for all.

Angkor and the Khmer Civilization (Ancient Peoples and Places)
ASIN: 0834804247
Release Date: 1998-05-01 |
Book Description
The Khmer empire, which in its heyday extended across the whole of present-day Cambodia as far west as Burma and north into Laos, flourished for at least five hundred years. During that time, the many thousands of temples and shrines built to glorify mainly Hindu gods, but also Buddhism, were carved with intricate stone reliefs of immense size, complexity and artistry. In these pediments, lintels and many miles of walls were portrayed the lives of legends of the Hindu gods, adopted and transformed by the Khmer from Indian sources, and Buddhist themes, particularly from the reign of the great Jayavarman VII.
Customer Reviews:
Understanding the Angkor Reliefs.......2003-06-18
The great temples of Angkor are decorated with beautiful relief carvings that illustrate (mostly) Hindu mythology, with a few Buddhist and historical scenes. The sheer number and variety of reliefs is overwhelming; their length would total at least a mile or two, if laid end-to-end. It is hardly possible to see them all in one (or many) visits, let alone to know all the variety of subjects that they depict. And yet, Vittoria Roveda has done just that. It's quite an achievement.
The book is organized into two parts. The first part retells some of the myths that are most frequently illustrated at Angkor - stories of Rama, Krishna, Shiva, the Sea of Milk, etc. In part two, the author discusses the reliefs of each temple in turn. (An awkward consequence of this organization is that illustrations of the reliefs discussed in part two will often be found earlier in the book, in part one, and vice-versa, requiring much page-turning on the part of the reader.) In terms of coverage, while even Roveda could not include every possible scene in this book, I would be surprised if any but the most obscure have been left out; this is an amazingly complete effort, and the book is quite well illustrated.
This book will by enjoyed by readers who are interested in Khmer art and Hindu mythology; and those fortunate enough to visit Angkor will find this book to be enormously helpful in understanding and appreciating the reliefs that they will see there.
A must book for those who interest in Khmer's Art........1999-10-17
This book describes a wide range of myths and belief behide the Ankor's architecture and art. The book shows that the auther have to sacrify his heart to study and conclude all discipline about Khmer Empire in to one... This is a must book for those who would like to study Khmer's Art in depth, not only the physical architecture or artifacts the you have seen.

Customer Reviews:
A Service Book That Makes Sense.......2002-10-12
In his most recent book, Providing Quality Service, William Martin has provided service industry professionals and educators with a great tool for training and teaching. The book begins with the fundamentals of customer service and continues with how to achieve systemized service standards. In the last third of the book, Martin covers how to develop the interpersonal qualities that every service provider recognizes as important. Martin, an experienced educator and training consultant to a variety of organizations, knows his subject and how best to present information that people can actually use. Several features of the book are worth noting. First, the writing is clear and unambiguous, which makes the text accessible to everyone. Second, each chapter has several diagrams which serve to reinforce the main points of the chapter through the visual display of the information. Third, every chapter concludes with a series of "application interaction exercises." These exercises are a wonderful learning tool and skillfully bridge theory and practice. Providing Quality Service is a practical and thoughtful approach to a full range of service issues. Martin's book points out ways to overcome any barriers to providing consistently high quality service. Providing Quality Service should be required reading for everyone in the service industry.

Book Description
The Public Report of Basic Education in India presents a comprehensive evaluation of the educational system in India. Based on an extensive survey of 200 villages in five states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan, the report gives a voice to thousands of
parents, teachers, and children.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read.......2000-04-02
I have read quite a few materials on education related issues in India. Most of the literature is either quite dry or full of anecdotes and no data, or focused on specific area/issues. The PROBE report is different.
It is an easy to read, lively presentation of the current knowledge and understanding of issues relating to children's education in India. The authors examine the problem as a whole: ie. what does it take to educate a whole population? What has been done so far? What is education? What are the key challenges? How well are the teachers trained? Do rural parents actually value education?
The primary source is a survey of the BIMARU states (Bihar, MP, Rajasthan & UP) and Himachal Pradesh. But it also includes insights from a range of sources such as dissertations (Nidhi Mehrotra) to leading social workers (Mrs. Shantha Sinha) to NGOs (Eklavya in MP) to governement officials. To understand why some states (eg. Himachal) are succeeding, while others are not, they compare the story of Himachal Pradesh with those of BIMARU states. Key factors that lead to positive results are identified.
A must read for anyone intersted in basic education.
Getting kids to learn: What really makes the difference?.......1999-08-19
This is a highly unusual and readable report. It comes from India, researched and written by Indians who evidently care deeply about how their country fares and how their children do. But what it says it applies to the universal issues of basic education that are asked just about anywhere in the world. So anyone who wants to move beyond the "oh isn't it terrible?" mode to the "how to fix it?" mode will find this book worth reading. The report is really well researched for the five states of India which are its focus: Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. But its power is not in its numbers, nor in the rehash of what "we know". Many other documents, such as World Bank documents, might do a more complete job of that. Its power is in the freshness and the passion coming out of the field investigations. Indias poor "shine through". We hear them speak in their own voice. And it is not just a keening about problems. It is a focussed and powerful statement of where the solutions are and how to get at them. It looks intensely at pockets of success and really asks, "why is that so?". This approach works in this report.
A superb account, and a timely call to action.......1999-07-24
The Public Report on Basic Education in India (PROBE Report) must be the best and most genuine overall account of the state of basic education in the BIMARU states (Bihar, MP, Rajasthan, & UP) of India. The Report is based on a field-survey carried out by a team of investigators in the last few months of 1996. Simply put, I believe it is an absolute must for anybody interested in India's educational backwardness, and indeed anybody interested in the problem of development generally. The Report gives substance to a lot of what most people vaguely 'know' about the problems with rural elementary education. It ends up making a strong and very valid plea for, among other things: forming an effective lobby for rural and basic education; raising state investment in basic education; raising the awareness & improving the attitude of urban elites and middle classes and (ironically enough) the media to basic education issues; increasing the accountability of teachers; drastically improving school infrastructure; changing pedagogical styles; recognizing and overturning the elite bias of school curricula; making students less alienated from the educational environment; making basic education a participatory process between the students, their families, the teachers, and the community; and giving more value to the work of teachers and helping them overcome the manifold frustrations they face in their work. One thing the Report stresses is the benefits of making basic education a Fundamental Right rather than merely a constitutional directive.
A mere summary will not do justice to the Report - reading it is important because it not only provides detailed information, but it also hits one hard. However, here I will just point out some facts and myths about elementary education, as mentioned in chapter 2.
Fact 1: Low Achievements: Half the country's population (61% males, 36% females) cannot read or write. Less than 30% of adults have completed 8 years of schooling. Female literacy rates in India are much lower than in sub-Saharan Africa.
Fact 2: High disparities: By region, class, caste, gender (an extreme eg: literacy rates for an urban male from Kerala is 96%, and literacy rates for rural SC females in Rajasthan is 5%). Only 5 countries have higher male-female literacy gap than India - and Rajasthan alone has a larger population than these countries combined.
Fact 3: Slow progress: The increase of literacy rates is so slow that the absolute number of illiterate persons is still rising with each year.
Fact 4: State inertia
Myth 1: Parents are not interested; Myth 2: Child labor is the main obstacle; Myth 3: Elementary education is free; Myth 4: Schools are available.
One final word about the Report: it combines reasonable academic rigor with personal narratives, so that it is pitched at both the academic and the layman.
Book Description
In this study, C. H. Kwan examines the phenomenal economic growth and integration in the Asia-Pacific region since the Plaza Accord of 1985 and the resulting decline of US economic hegemony. He explores the possibility of self-sustaining growth in the region and the formation of a Yen Bloc.
Economic Interdependence in the Asia-Pacific Region brings an analytical approach to recent macroeconomic developments in the area and focuses on the "real" and "monetary" aspects of creating a Yen Bloc.
Drawing on his wide experience in both Asia and Japan, Kwan presents a balanced view of the subject. He shows how Japan has replaced the United States as Asia's most important source of Direct Foreign Investment and how national borders have been opened to economic integration. He discusses exchange rate fluctuations, changes in the flow of trade, balance of payments trends and the "internationalization of the yen" as the key currency in the Asia-Pacific region.
