A nice book to take as a guide to Egypt's birds. Small for packing. Full of pics and information. A difficult subject to find. Glad we have it. Recommend for all birders going to Egypt.

Thomas Henderson tells it straight up . If you want to know how a man can right himself after falling from grace then you need to read this book . From the top of the mountain , fame , money , prestige , all pro line backer with the Cowboys to a destitute , strung out crack head . Want to learn how this man dealt with his demons ? He takes one day at a time , just like the rest of us . But Thomas makes a pledge to take one day at a time " sober " . It's an option , you gotta suit up every day !

As good or better than an A.A. meeting.......2005-09-17

I Really enjoyed reading In Control, Years ago I read Thomas's other book Out of Control and while I enjoyed it also. This one is different -- his first one told how he got sober, but this new one tells HOW TO STAY SOBER!!! While he tells us how to stay sober he also entertains the heck out of the reader. It is a book I am going to find myself rereading every couple years or so, and there are not very many books that are like that for me.

This book really made me re-think about my sobriety.Thomas Henderson helped me understand better about the 12-steps.About being able to better my life while dealing with my addictions.I really recommend this book for anybody who is going through a recovery process or knows somebody who is,to help them understand what that person is going through in their head.

I just spent the weekend reading this book and couldn't put it down.

Thomas Henderson has written a book about addiction and recovery, but his message is actually a universal statement of how to identify challenges, find solutions, produce results and to live a more meaningful life. I think its message has meaning to everyone.

If you (or a family member, friend, or associate) is challenged by addiction, you will learn and find inspiration.

If you are concerned about public policy issues and the burdens of our criminal justice system, you should read this book to understand more about addiction as a foundational problem that produces crime and recidivism.

If you are the leader of a company, of your household, of your kids, or of your peers, this book has important messages that can help you look at problems differently, consider new solutions, and to make better decisions.

While the narrative involves the recovery of Thomas Henderson, reading this book will help you be a more effective CEO, a better parent, or a more enlightened leader. Every thinking adult should read this book.

Straight Forward.......2005-03-25

This book is the straightforward, easy to read, incredible story of one mans trip to hell and back. Cowboy fans and anyone interested in reading a testimony to the human spirit will enjoy In Control. It is also an excellent heads-up to anyone thinking of dabbling in the world of alcohol and drugs. For those who can identify with Thomases plight, it is an excellent companion to the Big Book of A.A. For those who cant, let it serve as a warning to any who think addiction is a problem "other people" have to worry about.

If you are just starting out and only can afford ONE book like this one -- buy it. You won't be sorry. Not only full of good information but just enjoyable reading as well. I felt like the author was "talking" to me. Now if I can just MAKE myself do what she taught!

Antiquated Treatment of a Valuable Genealogical Topic.......2006-01-30

As a professional genealogist who also teaches, I tell my students that the topic of genealogical organization is one that must be addressed by all genealogists, amateur or professional alike. For publishing on this topic in 1999, I applaud Carmack.

However, for encouraging "paper only" research and organization, I fault Carmack. She says, "I cannot recommend one computer genealogical software program over another because, frankly, I don't even use one . . . the reason I don't use one is that I don't want to spend time entering years of research into a computer program. I'd rather spend my time doing more research. I began the days when people were still using those things called typewriters. However, I do use a computer and its word processing program, which allows for greater flexibility in manipulating and formatting data."

Organizing genealogical information in an ancestral database software program with accompanying electronic research log is critical to success! Carmack does not address this issue and encourages readers to stick with the good old paper. Wrong in 2006!

I recommend instead a recent book that addresses both paper and electronic organization by Ann Carter Fleming, "The Organized Family Historian."

Can only buy ONE book on Genealogy Research? Get this one!.......2004-01-15

This book is EXACTLY what you should get before you really get "into" doing your genealogy research. Wish I had! Instead I found myself being overwhelmed with what I had found and my various tries at organizing it just wasn't working! I did my research and this books looked like it had the most of what I wanted. That was an understatement. I have a LOT of work to do to organize my 1+ years of research ... but this book is really helping me get my act together.

One of the things I like best is she does not offer "THIS IS THE WAY TO DO xyz" ... instead she offers several ways to accomplish the specific task. States why you might want to use one over another and why she uses a specific one now.

Well written, easy to understand. Written as if she was sitting at your kitchen table just talking to you. Highly recommend!

Good portions, but overall, terribly stilted........2003-12-08

This is not a bad book. Parts of this book are extremely helpful to help you organize your genealogical papers. The probem with this book is that the author lets her own dated opinion keep her from seeing the bigger picture in the state of genealogical research. In essence, she spites herself out of writing an excellent resource.

She has a rather misplaced rant about using genealogy software instead of handwritten and handtyped family resource sheets and pedigree charts. She uses a case study to back it up, which only shows she wears blinders. (The case study involves a woman who clearly would have been disorganized whether she would have used a computer or not to keep track of her research.)

Computer genealogy software such as Family Tree Maker, Legacy, Generations and Clooz, only helps genealogist and amateurs keep track of what they have. A person can look at their information presented so many ways (reports, charts, lists) just by a mouseclick. It is a completely different topic than organization and simply did not belong in the book, especially being ravaged as it was. It would be like someone saying at the turn of the century, that typewriters were not desirable for an organized genealogy file, because you would have to retype everything you'd already handwritten. (Another part of her logic.)

She also only extensively covers storage via file folder. Now, I don't know about you, but considering I live in an apartment I really don't have room for a file cabinet. For hard copies and photocopied documents, I keep 16 one inch, color-coded binders I store spine out in a storage bin in one of my closets. I have no problems desiring more space or any feelings that my organization should be more efficient.

You might say, but you're not a professional. No, of course not. But this book is not a trade publication and is targeted at beginners or at least people who have gotten over that first hump and realize they have to do something with their notebooks.

In this day and age, the author's kind of thinking hampers the reader from taking the rest of the information seriously. Do yourself a favor and read one of the many beginner's books on genealogy (Managing a Genealogical Project, or Unpuzzling Your Past, for example) that gives the same core information with a lot less attitude.

Who would you be if you didn't know who you was.......2002-09-11

This is an excellent text for organizing your search for identity.

My mother had always told us we were descended from Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca. Sadly after reading this book, organizing my search and digging up the real information the truth is not as notable. It appears our entire genealogy, after running the gamut of various asylums for alcoholism and insanity, dead ends in some bizarre incestual prison camp off the coast of Madagascar. A bit disappointing but it explains the cross-eyed ness and assorted tics that run unchecked in our family.

The P&G Approach to Value Generalized.......2000-06-06

Delivering Profitable Value is an excellent look at ways to identify opportunities for making your products and services more valuable to customers. Unlike most books related to value which have little structure or focus to them, this one understands the importance of the ecosystem you use and in which your customer exists for delivering and using your offerings. One thing I liked was the series of steps the author proposes for comparing offerings available to customers.

The book uses lots of interesting examples, many of which are new to me. But each was easy to understand. It starts with a comparison of using an ATM and go to a human teller to point out the pros and cons of each.

I was particulary impressed by the discussion of the value proposition at Southwest Airlines. Only Nuts! and this book have a good description. Books by well-known academics are amazingly dense on that subject, as Mr. Lanning points out.

You also get some good information on advanced techniques for going beyond the limits of normal market research. This includes actually taking the time to become the customer or end user for your product or service, at the customer or end user's location. It also includes observing behavior with videos and following up with directed questions. Most companies use neither technique.

Mr. Lanning started out his career at P & G and has developed from that company's fine approach to marketing and innovation a more generalized way of thinking that can be used by almost any organization. That is well done.

His framework is robust in that it allows you to compare economic benefits (like a lower price, or being able to replace some labor in your manufacturing process) and noneconomic ones (like less stress) with competitive offerings.

This is a very well done book.

My only complaint is that he is so focused on the value proposition and improving it, that he pays little attention to the challenges of developing lower costs and better prices. Those areas need very thorough explanation, that is not really here. If the book had been entitled Diagnosing the Opportunity to Deliver Profitable Value, I would not have had this quibble. So really, it's just that the book's title is a bit broader than its coverage.

The DPV process, and the text itself, are excellent tools. They guide a company away from excessive internal or customer compelled thinking. The book's contentents instead direct the company to understand the experience the customer has with the company's products and all other interactions with the company.
