Book Description
The availability of freshwater for agricultural use is declining in many areas of the world. This is the reason for the increasing use of lower quality or of saline water for crop production. Prolonged use of saline water severely affects the irrigated soils, which contributes to the global land degradation process and has direct impact on biomass production.
For this reason, reduction of the spread of salinization, revitalization of salinized areas and introduction of salt tolerant high-yielding crops are important issues. The potential role of halophytes in the management of salinity problems of arid lands is investigated at length nowadays; some of these have produced promising forage crops.
This volume focuses on reclamation, management, and utilization of salt-affected soils, their sustainable use, and evaluation of plants inhabiting naturally occurring saline habitats.

A science and natural history coverage which not only hunters but classroom students will appreciate.......2006-02-07
If the name of Dr. Leonard Rue II sounds familiar, it's because he's produced numerous books on wildlife and is one of the most published wildlife photographers in the country. His Way Of The Whitetail comes packed with his gorgeous full-page color photos and provides a science and natural history coverage which not only hunters but classroom students will appreciate. From surveys on how mild winters allow bucks to keep antlers longer to seasonal changes in the northern states and how they affect whitetails, Way Of The Whitetail is vivid, technical and highly recommended.
Very Informative book!.......2005-10-31
This book had a ton of information about deer and their habits. The photographs are absolutely beautiful. Deer hunters and nature lovers alike will love this book. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in Whitetail deer.
An outstanding Book about Whitetails A+.......2005-08-30
If you are looking for a book about Whitetail's this is the one to get. This book has amazing pictures, ( my favorite is a shot of a mature buck charging across a small river with some does and smaller bucks trailing behind) and a wealth of information about all aspects of the life and behavior of these majestic animals. This book will be loved by hunters, nature photographers, hikers, or anyone who wants to learn more about deer and/or view the best whitetail photography there is.
Customer Reviews:
Easy read with many useful hints.......2007-08-15
If you're into spinner fishing, this book has many helpful suggestions and is an easy read.
Jed Davis's book is well organized and follows a logical pattern that makes his suggestion easy to understand and follow.
Best of all, I think Jed's book improved my fishing.
Great Book!.......2007-06-01
This book was everything I expected and more. Not only did it offer specific tips every season of steelheading, but offered valuable tips on making your own spinners as well. I'd highly recommend this book to anybody wanting advanced knowledge of fishing and spinners.
An outstanding description of a highly effective method.......1998-11-13
If you thought you understood steelhead fishing before reading this book, you are in for a big surprise. Davis not only explains the theory of how and why steelhead act the way they do, but he clearly and efficiently puts it to practical use by showing anglers exactly what spinners to fish in all conditions and how to fish them. As he points out in the opening chapter, nothing is left out or glossed over. He goes into excruciating detail on everything. But don't, for a minute, think this will bore you. You will be on the edge of your seat as he tears apart conventional beliefs and introduces you to whole new way of looking at things. For example, most trout and salmon anglers think that steelhead become lethargic in cold water and must be angled for with tiny baits. Well, here comes Jed Davis with a silver-plated #5 spinner in 32 degree water. I must say that I laughed my head off at first. Like how did this thing ever get published? Surely, this man had to be a lunatic. But I tried the technique in upstate New York and at my parents house near Bellingham, Washington. I hate to say this but his system works. Most guys keep this type of thing a secret. Not Davis. This is more like true confessions of an expert steelheader. Regardless of the method you fish, this book will give you tremendous practical insight. Definitely one of the best fishing books I ever read.
Excellent all around guide for fishing steelhead, esp in NW.......1997-10-05
More than just a book on lure selection and presentation, Jed Davis describes how optimal lure size and color differs according to water temp, sunlight and water color. Viewing spinners as 'attractors' makes spinner fishermen much closer to fly fishermen than they might otherwise think.
Davis' love of fishing -- bordering on the obsessional -- permeates the book and makes it more entertaining to read than most how-to books are. (It also raises the question "What does this guy do for a living?" He fishes only weekdays, and you have to sell a lot of spinners to pay the rent.)
As a new steelhead fisherman, I read and re-read the book to good effect. It took a couple of readings before I gleaned two key points. First, this technique works best on smaller rivers and streams. Second, being the first angler of the day to present an 'attractor' (i.e. spinner) in a size which almost (but not quite) spooks the fish is the best way to catch steelhead. There are a certain percentage of 'aggressive' (read 'dumb') fish in the river on any given day and Jed Davis' goal is to present his spinner to as many of these fish as possible. Using the author's techniques works, particularly if you sight fish and are prepared to cover a lot of water. Reminds me (somewhat) of the Teeny method of fly fishing for steelies: put it in front of their noses and slam'em!
Product Description
Jed Davis has been an avid steelheaader since the 1960's. He became a tackle manufacturer and outdoor writer in the '80s. He moved from Michigan to Oregon in 1981 where he pioneered fishing techniques for taking McKenzie steelhead as well as helping to popularize what he quickly recognized as one of the great unknown steelhead fisheries in North America.
Book Description
This brand-new grammar provides clear and simple explanations of today's written and spoken Japanese. Comprehensive and easy to use, with coverage of all the key points of Japanese grammar, it is the ideal reference tool for beginner and intermediate students, whether at school, college, or learning on their own. It is also an excellent support book to Oxford's Take Off In Japanese audio pack, or to any language learning course. Thousands of examples in an instantly accessible layout show how the language works. The verb tables are clear and easy-to-use and all grammatical terms are explained in a glossary.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely Helpful.......2007-08-03
Between this book and my Kanji-a-Day newsletter, I've GREATLY improved my Japanese in just a month. This book provides information on verbs, particles, and all the tricky bits that often don't get really broken down by the sensei. This is definitely best used as a reference, but I'm reading it straight through and it's clearing up a lot of misconceptions and questions I had about the language. One caveat though: the Japanese itself has some typos (mostly extra hiragana characters scattered throughout a sentence). However, it doesn't detract from the learning experience (these problems aren't in the romaji). Highly recommended!
quantity rather than quality.......2007-04-17
This is one of those books that promises a lot but falls short of its target. How Oxford Press expect you to believe that such a slim volume can cover ALL the key points of Japanese grammar is laughable. Certainly, it does cover many points, but half of of these are skimmed over, and examples are very limited. Plus, spelling mistakes (both in English and Japanese) abound to such an extent that I began to wonder if the proof readers for this book were the author's pet koi carp.
The pro's of this book are that when it gets it right, it's bang on. The language is very clear and understandable, and when something is explained, you know exactly where you are. What is more, the more complicated grammar that is covered is done so in such a way that it doesn't seem difficult. Also, if you simply want to get a feel for Japanese grammar in general, so that you can research it further through other books or websites, then this book is perfect. It may only provide you with a basic grasp of the language, but it's certainly enough to get you started.
Good for Intermediate to Advanced Speakers.......2006-06-14
This book does a good job laying out the grammatical rules, and explains them fairly clearly, but it is definitely geared toward those who already know some Japanese. A great deal of the book is in kanji, including some of the words they're explaining to you. Some of the examples have kanji and romanji to help you, but the author expects you to already have a solid grasp of the writing system. He leaves many words and examples untranslated, which makes it harder to grasp the concept for those who don't know any kanji, like myself. Even so, it's fairly understandable, and those who don't know kanji can still learn from it, albeit with a little more difficulty. I think it is a good resource, but I would recommend it for people who have already learned some Japanese.
Great Reference.......2006-02-22
This book really helps to futher explain things in clear language that maybe sensei didn't cover so well. Much better than the old grammar books that weigh a few pounds, this is small and goes everywhere with me. Highly recommended.
Truly great reference book + more........2004-07-31
This book performs exactaly as advertised, it is an extremely valuable and concise suppliment to your perfered metheod of mastering japanese.
This book will really help fill the gaps in your education left behind by professors who insist on spoonfeeding you little bits of information without explaining the whole story.
It is well organized and delivers in plain easy to understand english, information on many (if not most) japanese gramatical concepts. I've used several more expensive books on topics like particals and verbs and I like this book much better.
It's also small, inexpensive and contains less romanji than many other references.

A Catalogue from Gary Spinosa's 2007 exhibition, Philosopher's Stone, at the Bruce Gallery, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
Customer Reviews:
A Perfect Book.......2007-03-14
This book is a 185-page, glossy masterpiece, and an object for the hand as well as the eye. The book-as-object is something book designers, publishers, bookbinders and craftspeople know well, but most of the rest of the world experience it only fleetingly upon the purchase or receipt of a particularly prized edition. The book as an object, a work of art itself, has seldom been so conspicuously made manifest as with this volume, and it is appropriate that Gary Spinosa: Philosopher's Stone is the Bruce Gallery Press's inaugural publication. Having as its subject the work of a tactile artist, the volume is in itself a kind of interactive, kinetic, meta-Spinosa sculpture that allows the reader to touch and linger over Spinosa's multifaceted shapes, intricate details, complex textures and colorations. And, clearly, the creators understood this would be the case from the beginning. Entire pages are given to textured close-ups so tight it becomes nearly impossible to tell which artwork they are details of. Sculptures are photographed repeatedly from different angles, approximating one's turning the object in the hand. Page after page of luminous images by photographers Jeff Willis and Dan Fox open to reveal the kind of deep meditation you'd give only if you had these works in your home and contemplated them over time, as the mood caught you, revealing new insights. Gary Spinosa: Philosopher's Stone is far too overwhelming to be appreciated in any one sitting, and the book fulfills the real definition of a book one needs to own: It will be repeatedly referred to over a lifetime, and give increasing joy.
The volume is divided into two sections. The first, printed on a heavy, matte, ivory stock, presents a lucid insightful introduction by John Bavaro and an astute, learned essay by professor of art history Charlotte H. Wellman. These pages are illustrated with a combination of images from Spinosa's sculpture, paintings and drawings, photographs from previous exhibits, sketches from his notebooks, and assorted photographs from his home and studio, along with various images that parallel, in a casual manner, the creative impulses of Spinosa's art: Cambodian temples, painted Indian elephants, ancient ruins, and aboriginal carvings. These images are not attributed nor annotated, and readers are left to make what connections we will. It's a daring move in a bold book.
The main section follows. Printed on heavy gloss stock, photographs of work from the exhibit are laid out in a perceptive aesthetic approach that allows Spinosa's work to radiate from the page so naturally that it is a work of hard imagination to realize that in lesser hands a different organizational strategy could easily have diminished the power of the artwork the book presents. Moving from full views to details to intense close-ups, often with an eye to nothing other than the sheer visual power of color and form, each page reinforces what comes before and sets us up for what comes next, and this can be proven by randomly skimming through in the pages. The eye can glide and land anywhere in the book and strike gold. None of this is cluttered with notation. All the attributions are left to concise endnotes. It's a brilliant performance.
Again, the power of Gary Spinosa: Philosopher's Stone is that it is more than a record of an exhibit. It is a work of art in its own right. It is Spinosa's artwork in fact, brought forth through the multiple lenses of Bavaro, Willis, Fox, Art Director Shelle Barron, and Designers Sara Bressler, Karthryn Budner, Jamie Schricker, and Jessica Shoemaker, each consciousness comprehending the vibrant energy of Spinosa's work, and finding a way to amplify it through their independent artistic vision. And as the book rests weightily in the hand, this may be as close as many of us will get to owning the un-ownable. To possess, and scrutinize, and meditate upon, and bask in a unique art form at our leisure, and as long as we please, and whenever we want.
