3 out of 5 stars This book is outdated, but not useless.......2006-07-10

Even being an (unemployed)agronomist here in Brazil, I love to read books about world's situation.I read this book about eight years ago.
This book has many usefull informations. The best in this book is chapter 6.At the same time, this book is now outdated.Japan has no possiblity to be world's leader, in XXI Century.Europe is changing.USA had no big problem after all, with military expending or anything else. After all, this book is outdated, but not useless.

2 out of 5 stars see Pop Internationalism.......2003-09-25

I bought this book, and I really wish I could have my money back!

Another reviewer wrote that Paul Krugman, a very highly respected economist who also writes for popular audiences, had published a refutation of Thurow's thesis in Head to Head. Actually Krugman wrote several in the early nineties, during the NAFTA controversy and Clinton's first term. These are collected in the book Pop Internationalism, which is a fine book for anyone to read, as are Krugman's other books.

Of course you can read Thurow's book, and it has some interesting observations, among its flawed analysis, of business cultures in Japan and Europe; they make interesting comparisons with business culture in the USA. For this I give it one star above the minimum.

Also, it is interesting that this new updated version includes only a new forward; the text remains unchanged. Perhaps this is a little disappointing, since it would be nice to see Thurow's predictions for the future from now. But its nice to see how wrong he was about all his predictions before. His new forward says that he was wrong because America read his book and reacted.

Actually, he was just wrong. So I recommend that you read Pop Internationalism in addition to, if not instead of, Head to Head.

2 out of 5 stars Flawed zero-sum view of the world.......2002-08-07

This book is racy reading , and is made of the stuff non-fiction bestsellers are sometimes made of - a lack of intellectual rigour combined with a hypothesis that appeals to the general public. Tell the world that countries are like corporations , and that America and Japan (or any two countries) are engaged in a competitive game similar to that between Coca Cola and Pepsi - and there is a likelihood that a lot of heads will nod in supposed understanding.

No mention is made of the fact that international trade is NOT a zero-sum game , and that exchange based on comparative advantage will lead to a win-win situation for both countries involved. Instead the book harps on the assumption that somehow at the end of the game there will be winners and losers. In fact, it asserts that a united Europe will be the winner among the US , Japan and Europe. That prediction does not look like being borne out anytime soon , and Japan is languishing in a decade long mild recession - even though Japan did follow a policy of preferentially promoting "strategic" sectors , similar to what the book suggests.

The book's assertion that there are some high value-added sectors that ought to be promoted have been demolished by more careful analyses - notably by Paul Krugman's articles in Foreign Affairs ( March/April 1994) . These analyses show that productivity growth , rather than victory or defeat in some supposed economic Olympics , is the primary causal factor behind continued growth or stagnation.

Someone (I think Jagdish Bhagwati , but not sure) said in response to the assertion that it is better to produce semiconductor chips than potato chips ---- that you can produce sophisticated semicon chips, export them and import potato chips, lie in front of the TV all day long eating potato chips, and become a society of morons. On the other hand, you can produce potato chips , export it and import semiconductor chips, and use them to improve education. The hollowness of a lot of assertions in this Thurow book can be demolished by this silly-sounding but relevant quote.

The doctor's prescription is as follows - if you read this book , read some effective antidotes (like the Krugman articles) - otherwise you may be condemned to a view of the world that is siren-like in its appeal , but lacks even a modicum of truth.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing conclusion.......2000-10-14

Thurow made a good comparative sytudies between the economic models of Japan, US, and Europe. He illustrate the pros and cons of the three models very well.

However, I am disapointed with his conclusion. I still do not understand how he come to his conclusion that Europe will win the economic race in the future!

1 out of 5 stars Seriously Flawed.......2000-05-13

The assertions in this book remain just that. Thurow has once again produced a populist book that lacks any academic foundation. Playing on current trends and American paranoia this book presents distorted facts and hence distorted conclusions- ignoring some of the most basic ideas of free trade, such as mutual gains. Read Krugman, Obstfeld or Rogoff, but please don't read this.

Book Description

The Coming Economic Battle among Japan, Europe, and America

The central argument in this volume is that the familiar economic alignments of the twentieth century are obsolete. The author evaluates America's position in the coming world order in light of these shifting circumstances. While the United States remains one of the major economic powers, the future will be controlled by those who train and educate themselves and those who invest more money into research in order to develop concrete plans to confront the competition.

Thurow suggests that very different views of capitalism exist between the United States and Britain on the one hand, and Germany and Japan on the other. In order to ensure continued success, better education and national planning, along with increased communication between businesses, unions and the government, become central components of the game.

Synopsis:

A revolutionary look at what America must do today to compete tomorrow in a world where economic competition will determine leadership.

In this book is developed the way to manage changes in engineering processes, demonstrating the power of sumulation really. Hansen has obtained the wanted theory-practice binomial, which is not common in business literature. I think that a phrase that summarizes properly his work in this book is: "if an engineer doesn't measure, can't control anything", although surely Hansen would say "business man". instead of "engineer".

This book is billed as a comprehensive guide to painting male and female portraits, children's portraits, and the nude figure in oil. It contains 400 illustrations with over 250 color plates and includes 30 step-by-step demonstrations in full color. The paintings are all by George Passantino.

The book starts with a few pointers on materials and some black and white plates illustrating the painting of facial features. From there it's straight into the 10 adult portrait demonstrations. Each has from 7 to 11 color plates detailing the steps and each plate includes discussion on colors used and features modified, etc. This is followed by a discussion on composition, lighting, drawing and sketching.

The next section, children's portraits, follows exactly the same format with 10 children's portrait demonstrations and the same discussion afterward.

The final section begins with a section on painting the torso, arms and legs. It then goes through 10 nude figurative demonstrations. All are female, different poses, and each is accompanied by a similar number of color plates and discussion. This section ends with a discussion on body proportions, lighting, and drawing.

The portrait and childrens demonstrations cover different sexes, ages, and races. All told this book is a very nice set of portrait and figure demonstrations. It's suited for the beginning or intermediate artist. If you're familiar with any of the other painting books by Wendon Blake this is the same format only much larger.

                      Book Description

The Chang Tang, the vast, remote Tibetan steppe, is home to a unique assemblage of large mammals, including Tibetan antelope, gazelle, argali sheep, wild ass, wild yak, wolves, snow leopards, and others. Since 1985, George B. Schaller and his Chinese and Tibetan co-workers have surveyed the flora and fauna of the Chang Tang. Their research provides the first detailed look at the natural history of one of the world's least known ecosystems.

The plains ungulates are the main focus of this book—especially the Tibetan antelope, or chiru, whose migrations define this ecosystem much as those of the wildebeest define the Serengeti. Schaller's descriptions of mammal numbers and distribution, behavior, and ecology provide baseline information that may allow wildlife, grasslands, and pastoralists to continue to coexist harmoniously in this region.

This project led to the creation of the 130,000-square-mile Chang Tang Reserve by the Tibetan government in 1993, and Wildlife of the Tibetan Steppe should help promote future studies as well as conservation and management efforts.

"Schaller makes significant contributions to an understanding of the origins and ecology of Tibetan wildlife that will thrill specialists. . . . Schaller's book is much more than an ecological synthesis. It is a quest for conservation, a case history by a very brave and capable man, driven by no small passion to prevent the tragedy of extinction that looms over Tibet's fauna. His book touches not only the mind but also the heart, and in the context of conservation and the future it raises questions to torture the soul. . . . Wildlife of the Tibetan Steppe will long remain a unique, important source of biological, but also sociological, insights and challenges. I found it well written and difficult to put down."—Valerius Geist, Nature

"The topics in Wildlife of the Tibetan Steppe are at least as diverse as the topography; they range from geology and paleoecology to descriptions of ungulates and carnivores unknown to most of the non-Chinese speaking world. Individual chapters focus on kiangs, Bactrian camels, yaks, chirus, blue sheep, and Tibetan argalis and gazelles. Not only is much of the biological information new, but subsumed within these chapters are current and past estimates of population sizes both in the Chang Tang Reserve and in protected and nonprotected areas of 'the' plateau. Insights are provided into social structure, and speculations about the evolution and adaptive bases of behavior are carefully offered. Subsequent chapters involve discussions of carnivore communities and interactions between people and wildlife, including the localized but devastating effects of poachers. . . . This book has something for all audiences. . . . [A]n exciting testimony to the past and present status of a biologically spectacular region."—Joel Berger, Conservation Biology

5 out of 5 stars Good learning book, emphasizes fundamentals.......2007-09-17

I've been looking for a good book that explains Xing Yi, and I found it!!! It explains 5 elements (Pi, Beng, Zhuan, Pao, Heng) and 12 animals very clearly. Also, as a bonus, it shows the practical application of these movements!! It's definitely a good buy. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Useful compilation of old texts.......2006-01-31

The theory presented is the compilation of most Xing Yi classics, with original chinese characters and english translations, as well as the authors' interpretations of the passages. The presence of translated original texts is why I find this book valuable. The positions shown in the photographs are not to my liking (to not use a harsher word) - however, I don't do the same style of Xing Yi so I could be wrong. The Qi Gong shown seems quite silly.

Definitely a book to have if one is interested in Xing Yi theory. However, it is very light on the other three points brought to prominence in the title - there no applications shown other than the painfully obvious, fighting tactics and spirit are touched upon only in the compiled ancient texts, and even then only in the convulted way characteristic of old style Chinese texts.

                            4 out of 5 stars Nice classics........2005-04-05

The book is very good, especially because it has chinese characters, literary translation and commentary for all the classics it presents.

                            It has however one issue:

On page 237 of 2nd. edition 1st. print, Author writes: "Xing Yi Quan is sometimes called Xin Yi Quan because the heart plays such an important role."

This is wrong. Xin Yi Quan is the older name from when the style had only 10 animals and was called Liu He Xin Yi Quan. Xing Yi Quan inherited the classics from that style, which is why it is spelled that way. He should read up on that and correct it for next print.

I suggest he write a book with the classics of Xin Yi Quan, it has actually become a very popular style in Shanghai, China.

5 out of 5 stars Very fine book on this still little understood art.......2004-05-20

Here noted Chinese style expert Dr. Yang Jwing Ming has teamed up with Shou-Yu Liang, a noted martial arts coach, to produce an excellent volume on hsing-i (I prefer the older spelling). There's an awful lot of material here, including several chapters totaling 75 pages devoted to Chinese philosophy and medical theory. But if you're like me, you've read enough of that and will probably skip over that material and turn to the pages showing the pictures of all the postures, forms, and applications. While I respect the Chinese traditions and Chinese culture for creating these arts, I prefer western scientific explanations based on anatomy, neurophysiology, and kinesiology rather than the Chinese ones, which should be thought of as pre-scientific metaphors for later rigorous and more scientific analysis.

For example, to give just one brief explanation without getting too technical, consider the neural reflex known as the reciprocal inhibition of flexor-extensor pairs. Such a pair would be the triceps and biceps muscles. This neural action speeds up the muscular response by reducing the opposing muscle's tension. When the internal arts such as Tai Chi and the others emphasize being soft and relaxed, this is one (among several) factors that if one is over-tense will be inhibited and will interfere with speed and overall agility. Although this reflex is not under voluntary control (being a spinal cord level reflex), overall muscle tension is controlled by an area of the brain known as the basal ganglia or telencephalic nuclei, a region of the brain just below the cerebral cortex. And this area of the brain does respond to voluntary control, and too heightened a state of mental anxiety, fear, and other factors can cause the basal ganglia to increase the level of muscle tension over what is optimal. This is one reason why the internal arts emphasize relaxation and not being too tense. But none of this was known until the last one hundred years.

But getting back to the book, I liked the chapters showing the basic postures and moving patterns, the five-phases linking form, the Xing-Yi long form shown, and the chapter on practical applications. As the authors point out, after the student has learned the basic postures, the 12 shapes form is usually taught. But here the authors did something different which was nice. They presented another form instead which is rarely seen, a combination of the five fists and the 12 animal shapes that was developed by Master Liang's teacher, Master Zheng. The chapter also includes some of the applications of this interesting form. I think this is the main strength and most useful feature of the book, since the 12 shapes form can be found in several other books.

In addition to the above, there is also a chapter on Xing-Yi Qi-Gong, an extensive appendix discussing Yue Fei's Ten Important Theses (the inventor of Xing-Yi), and a glossary of Chinese terms.

                                Book Description

Although oil remains an important binding medium in artists' paints, today's synthetic resins are being used with increasing frequency. This was true during much of the twentieth century, when artists such as David Alfaro Siqueiros, Jackson Pollock, and Pablo Picasso used commercial or
industrial paints based on synthetic resins. The growing popularity of synthetic resin materials carries important implications for the conservation, preservation, and treatment of modern art.
This volume outlines the techniques that are currently employed to analyze the synthetic resins used in modern painting materials, such as pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy, and direct temperature-resolved mass spectrometry. For each technique,
results are given for standard samples of the principal classes of synthetic binding media, various pigments and extenders, tube paint formulations, and microscopic paint fragments taken from actual works of art.
Primarily intended for conservation scientists, conservators, researchers, and students of conservation, this book will also be of interest to other museum professionals.

                                  Book Description

Over the past seventy years, a staggering array of new pigments and binders has been developed and used in the production of paint, and twentieth-century artists readily applied these materials to their canvases. Paints intended for houses, boats, cars, and other industrial applications
frequently turn up in modern art collections, posing new challenges for paintings conservators.
This volume presents the papers and posters from "Modern Paints Uncovered," a symposium organized by the Getty Conservation Institute, Tate, and the National Gallery of Art and held at Tate Modern, London, in May 2006. Professionals from around the world shared the results of research on paints that
have been available to artists since 1930--the date that synthetic materials began to significantly impact the paint industry.
Modern Paints Uncovered showcases the varied strands of cutting-edge research into the conservation of contemporary painted surfaces. These include paint properties and surface characteristics, analysis and identification, aging behavior, and safe and effective conservation techniques.
