This book takes a historical approach to examining Islam’s role in globalization. The author identifies complex historical and geopolitical trends in Islamic history, and constructs from these a clear assessment of contemporary Islam. Most important, the book examines historical trends from a perspective that contributes to an understanding of Islam in the aftermath of September 11.
The author takes us through a review of the first Islamic millennium and Islam’s role as a globalizing force, to subsequent changes in the Muslim world, through a comparison with earlier radical movements in Russia, and finally to trends in contemporary political Islam and projections for future developments. Along the way, the author points out many of the challenges Islamists have faced, some of their pitfalls, and some modernizing attributes of contemporary Islam.
This accessible, timely book should be of strong interest to anyone with a desire for greater understanding in this transformed global environment.

Strenuously arguing that present-day Islamic terrorists can and will be increasingly marginalized as Islam progresses toward modernity, and providing an overview of the diverse changes which emerged during the eras comprising the first thousand years of Islam (when Islam itself was a force for globalization), down to the modern day, when revolutions of "blood and iron" placed other powers at the forefront of the globalization trend, Islam In A Globalizing World is an exceptional work of insight and a highly recommended contribution to Islamic Studies.
Short, powerful, interesting and IMPORTANT book........2003-07-13
This is a short, powerful, interesting and IMPORTANT book. The text is only 69 pages and says more, more clearly than the likes of Lewis's latest books. The notes and annotated bibliography are also well worthwhile. Former Ambassador to Pakistan and now a Professor, Simmons has a modern, US viewpoint but understands that social, economic, and political analysis explains more than blaming everything on "Islam". There is some useful information and a thoughtful argument about recent history and what is now going on. One need not agree entirely to learn, to think, to better understand. Everyone interested in world affairs today would do well to invest in this book. However short it has great value; a book should not be judged by its cover -- or its length. Some may also find the comparisons, like that of Russia in the 1870s to Islam in the 1970's provide perspective.
Those who know the Muslim world well might have liked a little more on non-Fundamentalist discourse or reminders about the glory days; others might be surprised how much is explained without much discussion of the (important) Arab-Israeli conflict.
Thoughtful and refreshing reading.

ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOANALYSIS.......2001-11-10
The rules discussed in this work are the informal mores and values that contribute to organizational culture and which can interefere with policy implementation from above. The concept is original, as is the framework of Strategy, Process, Resources and Organization in the context of which the analysis (and presumably management consulting) is performed. Beyond these two ideas the book suffers from a variety of flaws.
The language is stilted and regimented into an outline, which prevents a free flowing narrative that would be more appropriate to a case study method. Very little underlying theory is given for the concepts, but more importantly, for the methodology of identifying informal culture in an organization. The author presents many examples, but very little reason as to why and what he is doing.
His section on conducting an interview is almost a textbook example of the non-directed interview technique from psychology, and rather than concentrating on which questions to ask and what to look for, he instead gives us the amount of hours details of the brainstorming ritual that his consulting company performs.
The language of the book is unprofessional and it steers away from scientific terminology; the book is written in short soundbites and that contributes to the pop management feel of the whole work. The examples of the informal mores are generic and appear similar across his cases - job hop, keep your boss happy, protect your own turf, and yet the author fails to give any observations on this being the weakeness of the corporate exec culture as a whole. He mentions Machiavelianism, but at the same time fails to address corporate politics with any degree of satisfaction. I am not sure if this is a poorly written memoir of the man's professional career or if this is a marketing ploy for his consultancy.
Usefull theory, fairly slow explanation.......1997-09-08
I very much liked the book, mostly because it lead me into a "new world", the world of the unwritten rules (and our behaviour based on them).
I think the theory helps me get insight in every day life and the management of change. I do think I will be a more effective change manager when using the "unwritten rules approach".
I now try to use it in my projects.

We were given a pair of Emus and needed an on hand resorce for keeping them healthy and happy. This is a great source of info covering everything from anatomy, to pen requirements, breeding and slaughter. I am very pleased with the purchase, well worth the money. The only thing it could add is about handleing...our male Emu kicks both to the front and backwards. They do not like dogs a bit and will try to attack an animal near the fenceline. ...Be careful around them and they are no problem at all.

This book is an excellent source of information needed to learn more about emu. Not technical. Very down to earth writing, giving you information from collecting and incubating eggs, to slaughtering. Discusses sickness in the birds and various diseases. Also discusses different housing and fencing needs for the birds.

I just got my copy and spent the better part of the day reading it and enjoying all the beautiful photos. The history is not overdone, but informative enough to let even the casual Drag Racing fan appreciate the history of the sport. There are many beautiful, full color pictures of legendary cars and their drivers, in action from their heyday and recent. The book has nice touches like some of the original Drag Race Posters and tributes to drivers and engines. The memories this book brought back of being a kid at the track is worth many times the price. I'm looking forward to wearing out my copy of this book throughout the winter months while counting the days to the next Nitro fix at the track.

This book is brilliant! It is not only for the hardcore fan but also for the novice to the sport. It gives a detailed story of most fo the stars and founders of drag racing with incredible photos of not only todays machines but of some of the best from the past.
This is the book that the NHRA should sanction to document the first 50 years of drag racing and not the one they have put out that excludes the main man of drag racing, Don garlits! Genat gives credit to all the contributers of this great sport and "Big Daddy" is given the credit he richly deserves.
All of the pictures in this book are of the highest quality and truly ad to the statement this book tells about the sport.
I am looking forward to the next book by Mr. Genat!

Although chronologically I qualify as an adult, I enjoy most goods geared toward children with much glee. That held especially true with this book. This year was my daughters first Halloween. The two of us had such fun reading this book together. The rhymes made it easy to narrate in a sing songy fashion. That, coupled with the length of the writings, made this a perfect read for both of us. I didn't pack this book away with the rest of my Halloween decorations, it will remain out all year!

Author and artist are perfectly matched in this brilliant collection of Halloween poems. The green-faced, blue-haired, grinning witch on the cover tempts adults and children alike to open the book, sample the witty epitaphs on the endpapers ("Here lies the body of Jeremy Victor. He shouldn't have hugged his boa constrictor. Sleep tight"), and chuckle their way through the book. All kinds of ghoulish creatures cavort their way through the pages, and the poems, a delicious mix of scary and funny, are winners.

Deep and thorough, but based on readings of Hot Rod magazine.......2002-10-25
This is a really deep look at the birth and rise of hot rodding as a hobby and, eventually, business in the United States. I recommend it to anyone interested in the hot rod subculture. My ONLY complaint is that it is based entirely on "Hot Rod Magazine", and learning about hot rodding by reading "Hot Rod" is a little like trying to learn about women by reading "Playboy": the images shown and topics discussed are determined by the magazine editors, based on financial (advertising and circulation) concerns, and therefore may not represent what is really going on in our culture. It does, however, stick a pin in Hot Rod's relentless self-congratulation.
