    Book Description

As Japan comes to grips with a decade of economic malaise after its spectacular post-war growth record, how will Japanese society react? Contributors to this volume examine the challenges ahead for Japan in the fields of politics, economics, sociology, environment and business. This multidisciplinary inquiry looks for areas of continuity and for new directions in government, business and social policy and practice. Also examined is how Western students should approach the study of Japan; what new directions should institutions take to ensure that students learn about the `real' Japan? Written by Canadian academics, the articles in this volume will be of interest to academics and policy-makers studying or teaching about contemporary Japan.

        Book Description

`This is a refreshing look at applied economics, which the author argues should be so much more than applied econometrics plus experimental economics. What he calls vernacular economics is nothing less than an omnibus of fact-gathering techniques that economists have neglected far too long.' - Mark Blaug, University of London, University of Buckingham, UK and University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Putting Econometrics in its Place is an original and fascinating book, in which Peter Swann argues that econometrics has dominated applied economics for far too long and displaced other essential techniques. While Peter Swann is critical of the monopoly that econometrics currently holds in applied economics, the more important and positive contribution of the book is to propose a new direction and a new attitude to applied economics.

The advance of econometrics from its early days has been a massive achievement, but it has also been problematic; practical results from the use of econometrics are often disappointing. The author argues that to get applied economics back on course economists must use a much wider variety of research techniques, and must once again learn to respect vernacular knowledge of the economy. This vernacular includes the knowledge gathered by ordinary people from their everyday interactions with markets. While vernacular knowledge is often unsystematic and informal, it offers insights that can never be found from formal analysis alone.

As a serious, original and sometimes contentious book, its readership will be varied and international. Scholars throughout the many fields of economics - both skilled and unskilled in econometrics - are likely to be intrigued by the serious alternative approaches outlined within the book. It will also appeal to communities of economists outside economics departments in government, industry and business as well as business and management schools. Research centres for applied economics, policy research and innovation research, will also find it of interest due to its focus on getting reliable results rather than methodological orthodoxy for its own sake.

        Book Description

How did Kevin O’Connor help create DoubleClick, the innovative marketing technology company...two software companies...dozens of products...and now the “disappearing” DVD, a product that will turn the home video market on its head?

Sheer brilliance? While O’Connor is very smart indeed, he credits his success to applying Thomas Edison’s famous saying that “genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” In other words, the breakthrough product or service that is the result of sheer genius alone is the exception.

Great ideas that form the basis of new companies or that can make a hero of someone toiling in the corporate world are within reach of us all.

“But wait,” says O’Connor, “ideas are cheap.” Just as important is doing something with them—a process that will turn the best ideas into something that people need. In other words, O’Connor argues convincingly, innovation can be systematically forced.

The Map of Innovation is O’Connor’s step-by-step approach to devising lucrative new products and services and bringing them to market, through a process that has proven itself time and again in many different industries. Too often, people trying to innovate focus on things that don’t matter or waste their time trying to find answers to questions that can’t be answered. O’Connor shows why the map of innovation centers on getting right the five make-or-break fundamentals: creating a large number of viable ideas; picking the right idea to pursue; creating a highly focused strategy to bring the idea to market; getting the money to fund the strategy; and hiring the best people. With Kevin O’Connor, the proof of the value of methodical innovation is in the pudding. He helped start companies that have employed thousands of people and created billions in shareholder value.

Anyone can get lucky once, but for success to strike three times and to include many successful products, there has to be a method and map, and any company, big or small, working on any product or service can benefit from O’Connor’s time-tested tactics.

3 out of 5 stars Practical Book if you get over his self-aggrandizement.......2005-02-27

I almost threw up on the intro and the first chapter with the amount of praise the author heaped on himself. All the while I was thinking that I have never heard of his companies ICC or ISS, and I routinely block the 'doubleclick plague' from all my web browsers, so what has this guy really done? I almost threw in the towel when he claimed he invented the internet but didnt do anything about it.
Also heaping praise on Ford, Edison and bill gates for creativity, when it is generally accepted that these people used others' ideas albiet with good marketing.
Anyway there are some good suggestions in here if you can force yourself to read through it. Im glad I didnt buy the book and got it from the library.
I doubt the author is going to come up any anything substiantial due to his self-aggrandizement, which also also undoubtly make this book far less than a best-seller.

1 out of 5 stars Trite. I expected much, much more........2004-02-02

I bought this book on the advice of a good friend--a friend whose recommendations have been uniformly spot-on; until now.

I found the book trite, pat and predictable. It seemed to reek of Kevin O'Connor's desire to show off his past companies' successes while also proving to the poor reader that the author was just a "normal" guy--that if he could do it, anyone can.

Perhaps I was just put off by the two grammatical errors I noticed in the first 10 pages. Or maybe it was the unpleasant, ironic feeling that Kevin O'Connor's real next money-maker was not starting a new company; it was peddling this book to unsuspecting people who expected something substantive and helpful. (Though I hope folks reading this review realize that there is no "secret recipe" for business success. I wonder how many people who have read The Map of Innovation have subsequently achieved significant business success; my guess is: zero.)

In any case, to my friend's dismay, I couldn't even finish the book. I hope my experience with it helps others to avoid wasting their money and time on it. I wish I could recommend another book in its stead, but I'm afraid I'm not very familiar with this genre in general.

5 out of 5 stars This has probably become my most underlined book.......2003-10-22

This is one of my best business innovation, entrepreneur, start up books.

Each page is packed with practical wisdom for the new business startup, and the established business.

His information on how to innovate was very good. The author believes in always adding technology to a need. I thought his methods of creativity were somewhat simplistic. But the way he applied them to searching for business solutions was excellent.

The most important advice that I received from the book was in hiring. He suggests that you "Hire Smart At......". You'll be surprised with his recommendation. I had always thought that A. David Silver's advice on start up entrepreneur's was right on (find someone with a hurt), but O'Connors is closer to what I was trying to elucidate but couldn't.

Highly recommended, one of my current favorites.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on creating something new.......2003-09-16

I admit I read this book with a good bit of skepticism. I read Twyla Tharp's new book on creativity with even more. How does one "teach" innovation and creativity? It has to happen organically, doesn't it? Well, this book shows exactly how to create an environment in which product development can evolve naturally. The author has a number of major products, services, and companies under his belt, and there are really sound checklists for encouraging a workplace in which creativity and innovation can happen - and be recognized and rewarded.

5 out of 5 stars What an intriguing idea..........2003-09-02

...that innovation can be forced. That is, that there is an actual template you can follow to come with better products and services.
If a consultant posed the premise, I'd have my doubts. But this is written by a guy who has started a series of successful companies and who is actually in the business of being an entrepreneur (and not writing books.)
        Well worth your time.

            Book Description

Addressing decades of rain forest destruction, concerned scientists, often in concert with various environmental movements, have amassed an impressive amount of information on deforestation in areas throughout the world. In Tropical Forests, Thomas K. Rudel analyzes hundreds of local studies from the past twenty years to develop a much-needed global perspective on deforestation. With separate chapters on individual regions, including South and Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa, Rudel's work offers an up-to-date assessment of changes in the extent of the world's tropical forests. Through a meta-analysis, Rudel identifies the social, economic, and environmental forces driving forest cover change since 1980.

In addition to synthesizing a range of local studies, Rudel recounts the stories of people whose work preserves, destroys, or restores forests. Rudel's explanation of what has happened in each of the world's tropical forest regions reveals continued destruction in regions with large forests and some regeneration emerging in places with small, remnant forests. In the concluding chapter, Rudel considers the implications of these trends and describes policy directions for conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable development in each region.

This book explores the implications to management of present scientific knowledge on rain forest regeneration. Subsidiary aims are to identify gaps in information and understanding in respect to both scientific hypotheses and the needs of management, and to explore directions for future collaborative research and action. The text will help bridge the gap between the sciences associated with the wet tropics and on-the-ground management. It is based on thematic reviews, complemented by case studies.

                Description:
The purpose of our study was to determine the effect of groundstory fire on natural regeneration within 18-20-year-old Pinus caribaea plantations. Plots were established within three treatment types: unburned, once burned (within the last 5 years), and multiple burned (within the last 5 years). Three plantations within each treatment type were selected. The diversity, stem density, and basal area of vegetation greater than 1.5m in height were quantified within 10mx10m plots which were replicated four times within each plantation. Vegetation less than 1.5m was quantified in 1mx1m subplots. Results showed that tree stem density and diversity were greater in unburned treatments than within the two burned treatments. Once-burned plantations were distinguished by lower diversity and density of recruitment yet higher soil fertility as compared with multiple-burned plantations. We attribute this difference to greater fire intensity associated with once-burned plantations. We suggest that plantations that have been established for restoration purposes should be protected from groundstory fire.

                  Description:
Understanding the seed rain and seed loss dynamics in the natural condition has important significance for revealing the natural regeneration mechanisms. We conducted a 3-year field observation on seed rain, seed loss and natural regeneration of Castanopsis fargesii Franch., a dominant tree species in evergreen broad-leaved forests in Dujiangyan, southwestern China. The results showed that: (1) there were marked differences in (mature) seed production between mast (733,700 seeds in 2001) and regular (51,200 and 195,600 seeds in 2002 and 2003, respectively) years for C. fargesii. (2) Most seeds were dispersed in leaf litter, humus and 0-2cm depth soil in seed bank. (3) Frequency distributions of both DBH and height indicated that C. fargesii had a relatively stable population. (4) Seed rain, seed ground density, seed loss, and leaf fall were highly dynamic and certain quantity of seeds were preserved on the ground for a prolonged time due to predator satiation in both the mast and regular years so that the continuous presence of seed bank and seedling recruitments in situ became possible. Both longer time observations and manipulative experiments should be carried out to better understand the roles of seed dispersal and regeneration process in the ecosystem performance.

                    Description:
The floristic composition and structure of vegetation in natural regeneration were studied in a degraded area in Matupa County, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, originally occupied by Tropical Rain Forest. Three plots were used in the shape of a 20mx160m transect, divided into 10mx20m sub-plots, placed parallel to a remnant fragment. Transect 1 was 0-20m from the fragment; Transect 2, 20-40m, and Transect 3, 40-60m from the forest fragment. The total height and diameter at soil height of all the shrubs and tree individuals (height>=0.50m) were measured to the 5, 13 and 18 months after the area had been systematized and abandoned. Floristic and structural alterations occurred in space and time. The number of individuals, species, families and diversity increased during the time interval studied and decreased with distance from the remnant fragment. These floristic and structural alterations in the community as a whole and in the populations of the most important species, Trema micrantha (L.) Blume and Schizolobium amazonicum Huber ex Ducke, showed the tendency of a succession model by facilitation, where these pioneers would be improving the ecological conditions and thus easing the regeneration of late species. The conservation of the forest fragment in the surroundings was essential for the natural regeneration process of the forest in the degraded area.

                            Book Description

Bathed in sun and suds, Wrigley Field is home to the perfect baseball viewing experience. The ultimate neighborhood ballpark serves as a sort of time capsule, transporting us to an era where every park felt like a day at Wrigley Field. But postcard memories aside, Wrigley’s modern cachet is a unique success story. From its construction in 1914 by the implausibly successful Charlie Weeghman (for a baseball team that was not the Chicago Cubs) to serving as the venue for George Halas’s Bears, Wrigley Field has hosted many different kinds of sporting events for America’s second city. Stuart Shea’s unparalleled history of Wrigley Field documents a park and its place within the surrounding community, its influence on who lives where in Chicago and why, and as a home to teams and events that have helped a city define itself.

Beyond Wrigley’s status as both a living treasure and a historical artifact, Shea looks at the current plans to renovate the park; the combative relationship among the team’s owners, the city, and the neighborhood; and the strange blend of interdependence and mutual annoyance that have handicapped efforts to preserve, promote, and adapt the park to the twenty-first century. Unlike any other history of a ballpark, this “unauthorized biography” chronicles the ballpark as a venue for women’s baseball, football, boxing, and soccer, among other sports. As Shea explains, the tension between past and present, memory and the future, or America as we imagine it and as it is, has rarely been so well captured in one place.

                            5 out of 5 stars A great read.......2006-08-14

Stuart Shea does a fantastic job in this "unauthorized biography" of Wrigley Field of telling the entire story of the Lake View neighborhood, not just the ballpark. From the founding of the area in the mid-19th Century, to the area we know today as Wrigleyville.

Plus, it is filled with details of the Cubs on-field experiences as well. Yes, those wanting to know about how Wrigley went from a small grand-stand at Clark and Addison in 1914 housing a Federal League ball club to one of the most revered parks in the country; double-decked, and with the ivy covered walls, will not be disappointed. However, Shea also tells the story of the teams that played there as well. For, what is a ballpark without a ball club? (Bears fans should note that a chapter is dedicated to non-baseball related activities. There is also a note in this chapter about the Chicago Sting soccer club.)

I would agree that this book could have used more photographs. I'm not asking for a coffee table book (there are plenty of those already available) that takes away from what the book is trying to accomplish... Rather that, since the book is trying to point out (and at times refers to photos used researching the Wrigley renovations through the years), that additional historical photos would enhance the already deep wealth of information available in this book. This minor detail, however, is not enough to detract from a top recommendation for this excellent book on the Friendly Confines.

5 out of 5 stars Shea hits a homerun at Wrigley.......2004-12-03

Stuart Shea has written an intelegent and well researched book on the crown jewel of baseball parks.

The book illuminates not only the park but more over the vibrant and diverse personalities that gave Wrigley Field its character. From its comprehensive analysis of early Lake View, to the lights, Shea shares the details and yes even the foibles of those who call the Friendly Confines.

I encourage all that are fans of Wrigley to use this as a resource.

If the book were to be lacking, it would be in the actual paper quality and the lack of unique photos. Photos can be found in countless other books claiming to be definative on the park, but you will not find the facts and amazing narative content that Shea provides. This is a great baseball book.

THE NEWCOMER'S HANDBOOK FOR MOVING TO AND LIVING IN MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL is a great book for people moving to the area, yet even people who aren't moving there can also enjoy it. It discusses all of the urban and suburban areas in and around Minneapolis and St. Paul, as well as shopping, dining, fitness, and educational opportunities present in the area, along with a fairly complete list of radio stations to listen to, though some may have changed formats since this book was published. Some guidebooks are so bad that they make you oppose shield laws for journalists, but not this one or any other which I've reviewed.

I needed to do some research on Minneapolis/St. Paul since I am relocating there this spring. I have bought several books on the subject and this one is by far the most helpful book ever! The others had general overviews, but this book goes into detail! It has everything in there that anyone moving to the area could possibly need: finding a city to live in and descriptions of each, opening a bank account, finding a realtor in the area, and tips on just about everything you will need to move to the area. If I had bought this book first, I could have saved so much money by not buying the others. This is the only book I really needed! This is a great book!
