Book Description

The underlying theme of Rudi Dornbusch's work is unabashedly Chicago, namely, the University of Chicago belief that markets solve problems best and that most bureaucrats, even when well-intentioned, are distracted by politics or excessive zeal for perfect solutions. Dornbusch seeks to challenge those in charge with alternative answers and to limit their ambitions. He takes aim at central bankers, bureaucrats, unions, do-gooders, and politicians from Brazil, Japan, Russia, and other scenes of economic disaster.

This book collects Dornbusch's recent commentaries from such publications as Business Week, the Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times, as well as longer essays from recent and forthcoming books. The pieces focus on issues of domestic and international economic policy, including inflation and debt, exchange rates, trade policy, emerging markets, and the intersection of politics and economics. The writing is lively, opinionated, and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledged!.......2001-09-28

This entertaining and sharply written collection of essays surveys the essential elements needed to assure prosperity in the 21st-century global economy. Some of the essays are dated (the only major flaw here), and some of author Rudi Dornbusch's predictions have already been proven wrong, but enough of his predictions are dead-on accurate that his views command attention. His policy prescriptions are rooted in the real world and grounded in practical experience. The region-by-region, nation-by-nation analysis is particularly intriguing and accentuates the clarity and accessibility of Dornbusch's sophisticated - if sometimes controversial - economic arguments. We [...] recommend this book as excellent reading for policymakers, investors and anyone interested in international markets and globalization.

4 out of 5 stars the true key to prosperity - good governance!.......2001-02-21

Dornbush forwards a convincing argument for free markets and sound money. However one question begs to be answered. Why didn't these countries adopt the recommended policies?

There's more to prosperity than mere free markets and sound money. The ability (or rather the lack of) to sail these policies through the congress/parliament appears to be a major impedence. And luck only plays a minimal role in good governance.

Overall a good read. Non-technical approach makes this an entertaining book, only to let down by poor documentation (especially the 1st article which contains dubious looking charts with no references)...

        Book Description

This book deals with the role of plants in combating desertification. Desertification - the degradation of soils in drylands - is a phenomenon occurring in scores of countries around the globe. The number of people (in semiarid regions) affected by the steady decline in the productivity of their lands is in the hundred millions.
This work provides the reader with the experience of scientists from 30 countries and international institutions around the globe, working in cold and warm dry regions to bring plant-based solutions to one of the most severe problems of our times. The measures required to halt or reverse the process of desertification fall into many categories - policy, institutional, sociological/anthropological, and technical.

          Book Description

Phylogeography is a discipline concerned with various relationships between gene genealogies--phylogenetics--and geography. The word "phylogeography" was coined in 1987, and since then the scientific literature has reflected an exploding interest in the topic. Yet, to date, no book-length treatment of this emerging field has appeared. Phylogeography: The History and Formation of Species fills that gap.

The study of phylogeography grew out of the observation that mitochondrial DNA lineages in natural populations often display distinct geographic orientations. In recent years, the field has expanded to include assessments of nuclear as well as cytoplasmic genomes and the relationships among gene trees, population demography, and organismal history, often formalized as coalescent theory. Phylogeography has connections to molecular evolutionary genetics, natural history, population biology, paleontology, historical geography, and speciation analysis.

Phylogeography captures the conceptual and empirical richness of the field, and also the sense of genuine innovation that phylogeographic perspectives have brought to evolutionary studies.

This book will be essential reading for graduate students and professionals in evolutionary biology and ecology as well as for anyone interested in the emergence of this new and integrative discipline.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, does accomplish what it sets out to do..........2006-03-30

...and for the same reason, I feel deserves 5 stars. This book is on the shelf of all (grad students like myself) who work with phylogeography for a reason: It is complete, and it the first book to grab when starting a project of the sort. Very useful, however lacking in the details one must pick up later to execute analyses.

          3 out of 5 stars A good overview.......2001-12-18

This book accomplishes what it sets out to do, synthesize existing material into a simplified text. If you are looking for a good overview, this is a good book. If you are looking for mathmatical detail and methods, this may not be the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Excellently written and researched; I recommend it.......1999-11-04

In his book, Belue has carefully researched and written an account of the death of the buffalo east of the Mississippi. In a greater sense, this work examines life on the frontier as well as the history of trade and colonization of the frontier. The author uses personal accounts, journals, and memoirs of the traders, long hunters and trappers who played a role in the settlement of the frontier as a basis for the work. I highly recommend as well as the author's other works on the life of Daniel Boone.

5 out of 5 stars Full of useful information!.......1999-04-29

          5 out of 5 stars "A welcome addition!"--Beth Rengstorf, Bison World.......1999-02-19

Buffalo history enthusiasts will find that Ted Belue's book is written just for them. While there are a number of effective historical, nonfiction books on the American buffalo available, this one has the advantage of focusing attention specifically on the death of the buffalo east of the Mississippi. This noteworthy recounting of buffalo and their gruesome end gives a realistic picture of what occurred. Belue provides readers with enough information to gain both insight and comprehension. By the 1820s, the eastern buffalo herds were gone. The author uses many quotes from early chronicles to illustrate a vivid account of the hardships hunters encountered as well as the plight of the buffalo east of the Mississippi. Belue's careful research is evident and reinforced by the excellent selection of black-and-white photographs and old maps. The glossary, index, and selected annotated bibliography are very helpful to the reader. This book is written on a slightly higher reading level and is very comprehensive. This title will fill a gap in most collections and will appeal particularly to readers of American buffalo history. This book would be a welcome addition to any "buffalo/bison" book shelf.

5 out of 5 stars "Required Material! " John Curry, Smoke and Fire News.......1998-12-23

This excellent piece offers an up close/analytical look at the tale of the buffalo and those men who hunted buffalo in the 18th century "Middle Ground." Names, dates, places, hunts, scouts, etc. unfold in front of your eyes in an understandable and exciting manner via so many new and varied primary documentation sources I don't even want to get into listing them. Long Hunt presents you with a highly accurate perception of the era and its players. Somewhat akin to Arnow's SEEDTIME ON THE CUMBERLAND but much more specifically directed toward the over-mountain eastern frontiersman, I would have to consider this as "required material" for anyone whose persona involves hunting for a living in the 18th century frontier. Do yourself a favor...buy it!

          5 out of 5 stars A must read!--Western Writers of America.......1998-12-04

Several good books about the American bison are available in today's marketplace. Among the best are David Dary's The Buffalo Book, and Tom McHugh's The Time of the Buffalo. Now comes Ted Franklin Belue's The Long Hunt to make a threesome of outstanding volumes on this most recognizable of American wildlife. But Belue's book is different. Now, for the first time (that I know of) the eastern variety of the species is chronicled. Drawing upon archaeological evidence and utilizing first-hand accounts of early explorers, pioneers, and settlers along the Eastern seaboard and in the vast trans-Appalachian country, Belue follows the buffalo's saga from its earliest confrontation with American Indians, through the first European impact, and all the way down to the animal's extinction east of the Mississippi River. A valuable part of this book (aside, of course, from the invaluable information about the buffalo itself) is the huge amount of data that Belue imparts to his reader about the long-hunter, the eastern forerunner of the mountain man. Complete with extensive notes, illustrations, appendices, and bibliography, The Long Hunt is a volume to be read and intensely studied by any student of America's first West. One of the finest tributes to this book that I have read came from Dr. Richard Taylor of Kentucky State University, who wrote, "What David Dary has done in his study of buffalo west of the Mississippi, Belue has done for those east of it."--Jim Crutchfield, Western Writers of America, April 1998, Roundup Magazine

I fail to see the reasoning from the review titled "It looks nice but.............., November 19, 2000"

The main problem I have in this persons article is that I know for fact (and from personal experience) that these are extremely effective techniques. In fact the techniques presented in this book are several times more effective in a real situation than a normally applied strike.

And also, an angry person who "wants to rip your face off," is always easier to defeat than an assailant with a clear mind and excellent coordination.

Further more, this is a book pointed towards advanced practices. That means they require practice. No technique will be effective without sufficient practice.

In conclusion, this book is an great adjunct to your knowledge if you have a background in wrestling, hapkido, or ju-jitsu.

1 out of 5 stars It looks nice but.....................2000-11-20

Well let me start buy saying that the amount of information in this book could have been printed in half the space. The theory of striking pressure points on the body is nice and when done systematicaly with a cooperative person it looks good to,but I see little real practicle value in this book, the problem for me is Dillman claims that this is real self defence, well if he can hit someones arm or leg in a concise point against an opponent who wants to tear his face off I mean a real fighter then I stand corrected but I`m yet to see someone use a pressure point strike in a real spontaineous situation. Lastly I would like to address the Kata he attempts to give accurate applications,I think he has created his applications to fit the katas movements roughly, for a real insight into kata I suggest Nathan Johnsons"Barefoot Zen" for some fascinating insights into classical karate kata.My advice for readers look elsewhere.

2 out of 5 stars Pressure Point Fighting.......2000-05-26

This is the third book in Mr. Dillman and Thomas' series on Pressure Point Fighting. In terms of overall content, there is a considerable amount of overlap with the material covered in their second book. The authors attempt to cover 60 of the 350+ classical Chinese acupoints (22 on the arms, 21 on the head and neck, 11 on the torso and 5 on the legs), and 4 "extra-ordinary" points (3 on the arms and one on the legs). Of the points covered by Mr. Dillman and Mr. Thomas, only nine are new to this volume; the rest were covered in the previous texts. In my humble opinion, the point location charts are excellent, and well presented. Some of the theories presented by the authors on the basis of Pressure Point Strikes, as well as the reasons why Pressure Points work, are controversial within the Martial Arts and Medical community.

In many instances, the descriptive information listed for the points is identical to the information given in the second book In fact, the most significant difference is the point location graphics have been greatly improved. In addition, there are some minor changes. For example, the authors have added some text to selected points, describing the use of set-up points to augment certain strikes.

The level of information given on each point is not consistently presented. In general, the authors give a description of the point location, and give what they believe is the anatomical structural association of the point (i.e., why it works in that area of the body). Then they usually (but not always) give a block of text marked "Method" in which they give some point activation instructions and occasionally discuss the results of the strike. This lack of discussion on the effects of the strike / rub / slap came as a great surprise, and may leave some readers disappointed. For example, on page 56, they discuss Liver 14 (LIV-14), simply noting that it is in close proximity to Gall Bladder 24 (GB-24), which lies slightly below it on the rib cage. The authors note that these points are "in close proximity and are used together," by striking them both diagonally. No additional narrative is given regarding the martial effects of the strike, nor the effects to the body from either point. This lack of basic information is concerning to me, since both points are extremely dangerous; a medium strike will produce a knockout (KO). With a slightly harder blow, both points have been known to be fatal! These points are highly reactive, and even mild strikes to LIV-14 can stop the heart from beating, and also adversely effect the Liver. None of these issues or risks are discussed for this point, nor the majority of the other points.

In addition, the authors provide a large section on application techniques, consisting of 50 waza.

5 out of 5 stars Reading Critically Writing Well.......2006-12-21

I recently used this textbook in a college course. All of the essays are short, easy to read, and cover a variety of interesting topics.

            5 out of 5 stars book.......2006-11-11

The book was just as described. I do not like it only because it is a school book, but it was brand new and in great shape. The time it shipped was as expected.

1 out of 5 stars This is an old edition!.......2006-12-21

A warning for students - this old edition does not have some of the essays that the newer edition has, which can be a problem in class. The newer edition is ISBN 0312414773

            5 out of 5 stars As a teacher I love it!.......2003-09-11

As an English 101 Composition instructor, I found this book hand-holds the students through the process of creating different types of essays with wonderful essay examples. The book also gives great tips (questions to ask) for how to choose topics--a major problem for students.

The book became the outline for my entire syllabus because it's so well organized.

The students in my class did not rank the book well at the end of class review, but I don't think they put much effort into the course or read the book.
I'll be using the book again to teach the course though.

            5 out of 5 stars A Great Textbook.......2003-02-15

This is the best writing textbook I've ever used. I bought it for my college writing class, but had a hard time giving it up after my class was over. Not something you hear a lot about a textbook.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Composition Reader!.......2000-04-05

I instruct a first year composition class at a northeastern university. I have tried several other readers--including Outlook and Insights, Models for Writers, and Ten on Ten. While I think those books are full of good content, none is as carefully structured and presented as Reading Critically, Writing Well.

From the very first page, it presents important information clearly and concisely. Beginning with examples of autobiographical writing and ending, predictably, with information on research strategies and documentation, it is perfect for a first year composition student whose primary goals is to learn the most effective and evocative techniques for expository writing.

I love the way each segment ends with ideas and strategies to drive home the main topic of that section. Each chapter concludes with an emphasis on the necessary skills of editing and proofreading. While this might seem gratuitous, this repetition is very effective in raising the students' awareness of these issues.

Overall, I found the selected essays engaging, evocative, and thought-provoking. My class is fascinated by the discussion of topics as wide-ranging as early 20th century courtship rituals and reincarnation. I highly recommend this to composition instructors looking for a clear concise text.
