The fifteen essays in this volume apply the methods of the new economic history to the history of the Latin American economies since 1800. The authors combine the historian's sensitivity to context and contingency with modern or "neoclassical" economic theory and quantitative methods.
The essays shed new light on the economic history of all the major economies from Mexico and Cuba to Brazil and Argentina. Some focus on comparing macroeconomic policies and performance, others analyze key sectors such as foreign trade, finance, transportation, and industry, and still others focus on the impact of property rights, government regulation, and political upheaval.

Coatsworth and Tayler have added a significant contribution to a field that have known, up to now, only individual monographies about the development of national economies in Latin America, not disregarding the excellent Victor Bulmer-Thomas "The Economic History of LA" or the more recent volume organized by Rosemary Thorp. The history of economic international relations of the Latin American countries and the region's insertion in the world economy is, of course, a chapter in the history of world capitalism, but we were still missing a comprehensive approach about the specific path of the economic modernization of the entire region, despite some general contributions, like Bradford Burns'"The Poverty of Progress" or the old books by Rippy and Platt. Now, the quest is (almost) over, at least from the point of view of "centric" economies. Coatsworth and Tayler add a new powerful academic tool for researchers and other people interested in better know how Latin America managed to become what Prebisch called "a periphery to the center". Perhaps the next significant evolution in this field would be to have a history of the economic insertion of Latin American countries in the world economy from the point of view of those countries. But, that is another story...

Decent, but we need better........2002-02-20
It's hard to find reliable care books for reptiles theses days. Mostly because of product placement. All too often I see photos of poor UVB lights, heat rocks, or harmful cage substrate in books just because of product placement (and the author probably got paid).
This book is tolerable. Though it doesn't get an A from me. It's not exactly brand new, and that is the most obvious reason books are bad. They make excellent resources for unchangable facts such as "green anoles are green when healthy." But newsletters, journals, and authentic online sources are better.
This is probably the best anole book out there though. But it's truly not enough folks. Like all books he tries to stress the things to do. But like all books he doesn't stress the worse things not to do.
Information on harmful products to avoid , cutting edge health remedies, which brands of UVB light are best, very explicit and dirty issues with housing anoles with other species, information on better insects such as silkworms (we need to abolish meal worms and wax worms already, folks!), and things about anole diets one must know (such as why pet store vitamins may be bad and why canned or commerical diets are a joke).
Like I said, it's good to get one interested. But it's not the anole care bible by a long shot.

I though that this was a good, basic book about anoles. It is a good book for general information about these lizards. However, I would have appreciated more detailed information about how to take care of crickets.

Anoles book hits mark........2000-01-14
This is an excellent book for beginners to keeping anoles. Though quite commonly sold as pets, decent, correct information about their care is rare. The price is reasonable, and the pictures both pretty and illustrative. The reviewers who complained about "big words" and difficult text will find the book easier to read after they finish high school.

The book does provide a diverse range of genre. It works well as a literature textbook. However, the quality of the book binding is poor. Students purchase this $50+ textbook only to have chunks of it fall out before the end of the semester. I suppose the publisher sells more textbooks that way, since few books are resold as used books, but I can't recommend it for just that reason.

An excellent textbook for first-year college students........1998-10-08
This book provides a good range of diverse materials for a teacher in a first year English course. There are multiple genres and themes, a section of famous paintings for discussions (useful for discussions on literature and art), among other helpful features. The Conscious Reader is an antidote to readers which have the same standard writing for student use.
