Book Description
The field of evolutionary biology arose from the desire to understand the origin and diversity of biological forms. In recent years, however, evolutionary genetics, with its focus on the modification and inheritance of presumed genetic programs, has all but overwhelmed other aspects of evolutionary biology. This has led to the neglect of the study of the generative origins of biological form.
Drawing on work from developmental biology, paleontology, developmental and population genetics, cancer research, physics, and theoretical biology, this book explores the multiple factors responsible for the origination of biological form. It examines the essential problems of morphological evolution--why, for example, the basic body plans of nearly all metazoans arose within a relatively short time span, why similar morphological design motifs appear in phylogenetically independent lineages, and how new structural elements are added to the body plan of a given phylogenetic lineage. It also examines discordances between genetic and phenotypic change, the physical determinants of morphogenesis, and the role of epigenetic processes in evolution. The book discusses these and other topics within the framework of evolutionary developmental biology, a new research agenda that concerns the interaction of development and evolution in the generation of biological form. By placing epigenetic processes, rather than gene sequence and gene expression changes, at the center of morphological origination, this book points the way to a more comprehensive theory of evolution.

Documents the major problems with neo-Darwinism.......2004-03-24
Origination of Organismal Form: Beyond The Gene In Developmental And Evolutionary Biology is a collection of excellent essays by scientists who assume Darwinian evolution, but whose work reveals various major evidential and conceptual problems with the theory. They are part of a growing number of scientists who find major problems with Darwinism but are not any type of creationist. The problems with Darwinism are usually buried deep in technical publications but they are there if one looks. Anyone with the training and inclination to read this book could benefit greatly from it. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in evolutionary biology. We can no longer ignore these problems. They are too great and must be dealt with. This book is an excellent introduction to these problems. A must read book!!!
In Search of a Theory of Evolution.......2003-02-10
The public Darwin debate doesn't really match the progress of biological research. And experts in the field seem reticent to point to the limits of the standard theories. Here we are told plainly, Darwinism has no theory of the generative. And the breakthroughs in developmental genetics fail to explicate the sources of organismic form. The text acknowledges that concern with the gene has overshadowed all other aspects of the discussion.
This highly interesting, not too technical, work explores the work being done on evolutionary innovation. A theory of evolution should explicate both innovation and diversification. But natural selection can only explain how what already exists is maintained or transformed in the process of ecological survival. The standard explanations of variation and natural selection do not really explain this '
source of form' aspect of evolution, and we are presented with ambiguous statements about an evolutionary toolkit, in the developmental version, whose origins could not spring from the processes described in the Neo-Darwinian Synthesis. It seems an advance that a technical work by experts in the field would point this out. This is a very useful glimpse of the real work needed in biology, and should prove a useful refuge from the confusing public discourse on evolution that is generally less than helpful.

Coverage is also given to the diagnosis of pituitary tumors, Cushing's syndrome, thyroid disease, and hypoglycemia; the evaluation of endocrine-induced hypertension; the assessment of dyslipidemia and obesity; and approaches to diagnosing hyper- and hypocalcemia. There are also discussions of osteoporosis, hypogonadism and erectile dysfunction, and hyperandrogenism in women. The authors each review the complex physiological basis of the relevant endocrine processes and provide richly instructive recommendations for followup and long-term management of patients.
Book Description
The black bear, Ursus americanus, was a creature of legend and mystery among Native Americans. When the first European settlers arrived, it is estimated that two million black bears roamed across North America, but by the early 1900s the bruin had been hunted, trapped, poached, and killed almost to extinction. In many parts of its native range, the black bear had, indeed, disappeared. Today, the black bear has come full circle. It has now returned to much of its native habitats, and about one million are now found across the United States and Canada.
In HUNTING AMERICA'S BEAR, the author takes a look at the bruin's relationship with man, its natural history, and what makes it such a popular quarry. Specific chapters take a look at the bear's habitat; where to locate and how to recognize bear sign; baiting; hunting with hounds; the different ways to successfully hunt the bruin; how to select the best rifles and calibers, bows and arrows, handguns, muzzleloaders, and slug guns for hunting this animal; what to expect in bear camp; and many other helpful hints.
The black bear is a fascinating and challenging big-game animal, and this book will not only help make hunting them more interesting and productive, but will also help develop a better understanding and appreciation for America's bear.
Customer Reviews:
Good coverage of the basics.......2007-05-03
I found this book to cover the basics well. If you are really new to bear hunting you will find it useful especailly if you plan to hunt with dogs or bait. Generally well written and very simple.
Don't buy this book.......2005-10-14
I have no idea what the guy who rated this book ahead of me is talking about. This book doesn't have any good material on tactics, half of it is bear statistics and half of it is choosing your weapon( 4chapters). Do not buy this book, save your money and time.
Bear Hunting Strategies.......2005-07-28
This book contained a multitude of different tactics to use on the obtaining the trophy bruin. There were many helpful sections such as the ones on where you are at in the country that allows you to hunt these magnificent creatures, can determine what tactics to use. The author covered everything from selection of a spot to hunt, to selection of the archery equipment to the selection of firearms. This is another great book to have on your shelf for reference purposes for a successful hunt.
Book Description
"
If God is the all-consuming, all-powerful, all-knowing, loving and infinite Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer of this universe, then nothing else we can do matters quite as much as getting to know Him and know Him well!"
C'mon now! Enough of spoon-fed spirituality and Sunday-morning religion that lasts until church lets out. It's time to get serious--to get deep into God's Word and start exploring your most important relationship for yourself. You won't have to do it by yourself, though. Author Tony Evans, one of America's most passionate and insightful preachers, will join you every day to explore the great news of who God is--and who you are in Him--through the lively daily devotionals in this book.
Covering a different topic every four weeks, Evans speaks to all Christians--men, women, singles, couples and parents--about the essentials for a growing faith. And about your greatest pursuit in life: getting to know God--and know Him well.
Drawing deeply from Scripture, Evans focuses on the most important aspects of the faith--such as the attributes of God, discipleship, prayer, the role of the Holy Spirit--and, in his direct, refreshing, down-to-earth style, shows how developing your knowledge of God affects everything about you. Your marriage. Your family life. Your friendships. Your purity and integrity. Your view of money and possessions. And your commitment to helping heal society's ills.
So c'mon! Get serious! And get to know your Creator in a way that really matters. In a way that will change how you view your faith, yourself, your world--and Him.
Customer Reviews:
Great daily devotion.......2005-09-13
This book consists of in-depth devotions for each day of the week. It's a little different then most daily devotions because it forces the reader to take a deep look at the meaning of the scripture being reviewed for that day. There is a devotion for each day on Mon-Fri and then there is a review of the week's devotions/scriptures on Sat-Sun.
If you are wanting to gain a more intimate understanding of God's Word..this book is for you.
Well written, thought provoking and hard hitting..........2002-11-22
Working in ministry myself, I have stacks of devotional materials that don't keep my interest. They don't have any fresh, interesting or inspiring moments while reading, rather use the same passages and parables. That's not the case with Tony Evans' book. I ordered it about a year ago in hopes to find a challenging devotional book that would deal with tough questions, as well as be a daily read for me.
I've used this book many times when meeting with collegues, and each time someone asks for the title & author to order it themselves. The format is basic and non-threatening for new believers, as well as educational for life-long Christians...I can't recommend it enough. His "Thoughts for the day" are great to reflect upon. Buy the book if you're wanting a daily lesson or reminder of where, why and how God is love.
Great book!.......2001-02-18
This book will keep you focused. It only takes a few minutes a day, and the message is powerful! Tony Evans has you read a passage from the bible, then he explains the lesson it contains. Each day one page, and is based on a 5-day week, with a page of 'reflection' for the weekend. He uses today's language and is very easy to understand. I highly recommend it for anyone who is trying to digest the true word of Jesus.
Tired of failing to have time for God? Get this book........1999-06-14
For years and years I have been told quiet times with God are absolutely essential to walking with Christ. I could never get into a pattern of doing this. This book is the difference. Dr Evans has a year of growing a walk laid out so well, that now it is my routine. He has a beautiful way of zinging you so that you really reflect all day. A fabulous devotion book. I wish more were this plain spoken
Excellent devotional book !.......1998-12-15
Dr. Evans doesn't play around in these devotionals. He takes God very serious and so should we. This book is very time friendly without trivializing your time with God.

Customer Reviews:
typical DK book.......2007-07-25
Pretty picture as in all DK books but gives an entire overview of all acrylic paining in 72 pages. A lot of simple paragraph definitions of techniques but nothing of any direction or use for a begining painter. A great picture book for a child.
GREAT beginner Arylic Book - Simple & Loaded with Pictures.......2007-07-13
I bought this book based on all the other reviews and now I too love it. Loads of beautiful color pictures and examples and written clearly. If you're beginning acrylics - get this !
Good Book, Not Great Book.......2007-07-03
Considering that I have yet to find a complete compedium of Acrylic techniques, this is probably one of the better books out there, especially for beginners. This book will give you the short and skinny on your tools, paint and mediums, and canvases/surfaces. After that, the book starts giving examples on how to tranfer your image onto the canvas with pencil prior to painting, using opaque methods to painting, transparent(watercolor style) methods, drybrushing, scumbling, and more. Then at the end of the book, it contains a series of gallry examples in acrylic to inspire. This book is a good foundation book, and gives many approaches to using acrylic.
Indispensable for the Beginner.......2006-08-16
When I decided that I wanted to start painting, I bought five "How To" books. This one is my favorite, hands down. The book is well organized, well written, and contains a lot of beautifully detailed photographs. The author has kept the text to a minimum, letting the photographs do much of the talking, which works far better for me than other books that have more emphasis on written instruction.
In only 72 pages, every topic is covered, and no question is left unanswered. It begins with a brief history of the medium, then moves on to cover color, paint types, brushes, painting surfaces, tools, and techniques, as well as galleries of different painting styles. There's even a section on experimental approaches, such as stenciling and inventive scraping. Rather than presenting a series of exercises (as many books do), this author encourages experimentation and discovering your own personal style, an approach that really inspired me to pick up a brush and get started.
Also worth mentioning is that every photograph and illustration is in color . . . really GOOD color. This may sound like a no-brainer, but a few of the other books I purchased contained a lot of black-and-white photos. Hey, you can't learn to paint in black and white!
Experienced artists may find the material here a bit too rudimentary, but for the true novice, like myself, this book is a winner. If you're looking for that ONE book to get you started, this is it!
Great for Beginners.......2005-04-17
Very informative and easy to read. Wonderful pictures! If you are new to acrylics, this is a great place to start!
