Book Description
A country's stance on international trade is an important component of its economic welfare. Yet relatively little theoretical attention has been paid to developing accurate methods to assess trade policies, leaving practitioners and policy makers with ad hoc solutions that lack theoretical foundation. In this book, James Anderson and Peter Neary present a new approach to gauging trade restrictiveness. Extending the standard theory of index numbers that apply to prices, output, or productivity, Anderson and Neary develop index numbers that apply directly to policy variables. Their theoretical work builds on, and extends, the standard theory of policy reform in open economics; their empirical findings illustrate how the new indexes can be applied and show the resulting difference in the assessment of trade restrictiveness. Thus their book will be of interest to both theorists and practitioners.
After giving a nontechnical introduction to the topic, which includes a discussion of the theoretical and practical failings of other methods of measurement, Anderson and Neary propose two new indexes, the welfare-equivalent uniform tariff and the import-volume-equivalent uniform tariff, and present the theoretical foundation for these methods. The empirical work that follows applies the new approach to a range of issues, including the trade restrictiveness of domestic distortions and the use of a computable general equilibrium model to calculate the proposed measures of trade restrictiveness.

Business Climate Shifts: Profiles of Change Makers contains a wealth of CEO wisdom about how companies today can successfully manage change in response to rapidly changing business conditions. Includes a compelling overview of the factors and forces driving rapid and often "discontinuous" change in business today - e.g. globalization, the disruptive influence of new technologies, growing electronic connectivity among far flung financial markets, and the rise of e-business among others -- and assesses the short and long-term significance of these trends for the long-term viability of companies in all industries. Among the "change makers" profiled in this book: Lord Colin Marshall, Chairman of British Airways; Robert Bauman, former CEO of SmithKline Beecham; Bill Henderson, U.S. Postmaster General; Jane Garvey, Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration; Fred Poses, President of AlliedSignal; Sir Richard Evans, Chairman of British Aerospace; and Errol Marshall, CEO of Shell South Africa, among others.

Packed With Knowledge!.......2001-08-14
Like a ship's captain, a CEO is only as good as the latest weather report. If a chief executive unknowingly steers his or her ship into the path of a hurricane, that ship's in trouble, no matter how skillful a seaman that captain may be. And unfortunately for CEOs, hurricanes - in the form of disruptive changes that remake markets overnight - have become almost an everyday danger. Authors W. Warner Burke, William Trahant and Richard Koonce argue that the most critical function of a corporate leader today is to monitor and respond to these rapid shifts in the external marketplace, or business climate. To illustrate this point, they offer insightful profiles of leaders who successfully guided their companies through the storms of organizational change initiatives. These profiles are especially effective in giving the reader both a sense of the personalities of these dynamic executives and a practical breakdown of the methodologies and strategies that they employed. We [...] strongly recommend this book to senior executives, would-be change agents and anyone curious about how to navigate the turbulent environment of 21st-century business.
Change through Leadership.......2000-03-09
After reading BUSINESS CLIMATE SHIFTS it was clear to me that this book was as much about leadership as about change. As a thirty year middle manager who has participated in both the planning and implementation of change, I was extremely pleased to read throughout the book that, although the companies were focusing on the customer, they all recognized the importance of the employees. The one common denominator throughout the book was that how management treats the employees is how the employees treat the customers. Although Colin Marshall at British Airways and Roger O. Goldman of National Westminster Bancorp. have distinctively different styles, they both recognized the importance of employees in the change process and demonstrated that leadership is key to effective and efficient change.
Starting my career in government late in life, I have noticed a reluctancy of federal executives to get the rank and file involved in major change initiatives. I suggest that any government manager or executive contemplating change read BUSINESS CLIMATE SHIFTS. The lessons learned from those who have been there, both government and industry, are invaluable and provide a framework for developing issues and questions that need to be addressed before any major shifts or changes in organizational culture.
An Insider's View of Change.......2000-02-19
This book is a must-read for anyone involved with organizational change -- whether you are managing the change or experiencing it from the "front lines." These fascinating Q & A's gave me real insight into the process. I recommend Business Climate Shifts to any forward-thinking person in the corporate world today.
A personal look - a real opportunity to meet change makers.......2000-02-16
Just ordered "Business Climate Shift" at the recommendation of a friend. I am a consultant who works with corporations on training and e-learning strategies that support implementation of knowledge and skill development in rapidly changing market places. My work continually has me working with senior managers on business change issues. I am always looking for new perspectives on organizational change. What is interesting about the book is the interview format. A very interesting way to explore the subject. The interview style gives you a chance to draw your own conclusions and you get a personal feel for the context senior managers face as they address organizational change issues. I have found the interviews very engaging and the authors do a nice job of summarizing the key organizational change issues for each interview. Many organizational change books present models and theory. This one also gives you a view of the human and personal issues associated with leading major change initiatives. .
A Business-Oriented Book Useful to Not-for-Profit Leaders.......2000-02-12
As a college president, I read a lot of books about leadership and about institutional change. I found "Business Climate Shifts" to be extremely enjoyable to read, helpful, and relevant to a CEO of a not-for-profit. Although the idea of fast change seems like an oxymoron when connected to higher education, this book gives a framework in which higher education and other not-for-profits can operate. The helpful use of the living organism as a metaphor feels comfortable for higher education as does the book's use of scenarios -- something we are very comfortable with but often fail to use. In fact, the use of a metaphorical approach throughout fits with current thinking on the sources of visionary capability in leaders. The Organizational Diagnostic Checklist is worth the price of the book; it allows an organization to begin quickly the process of assessment and can be used throughout an organization. Educational institutions are very familiar with assessment, and this book fits directly into that familiar territory while giving it a business twist. The use of informal case studies and interviews makes the book easily readable and quite interesting. The chapter conclusions help focus the reader's attention on what has been read and demonstrate what has been learned from the case study. I found myself going back to them as a kind of review when I had finished the book. Asking people who have been successful to describe their own skills and approaches adds strong credibility and validity to the book. I feel certain this aspect of the book will make it useful as an educational tool for developing future leaders.

A full-color photographic field guide to mushrooms and fungi of the northern United States, from the Midwest to New England. Featured in USA Today, this must-have reference has spectacular photos and excellent species information.
Customer Reviews:
Do not, under any circumstances, buy this book........2007-09-07
This book misses one edible mushroom in particular that is of great interest to amateur hunters. Grifola frondosa is one of the world's best edibles and can grow to huge size. I am very surprised that an author with such prestigious honors missed it (although he did find a similar mushroom in the same group, the non-edible "Berekley's Polypore"). Grifola frondosa is common and widespread, and grows up to a huge size. To write about each of these other mushrooms, and not to have at least walked onto frondosa, is impossible. I suggest the Audubon guide, although the pictures aren't as nice, the black and white plates in the back can help identify the shape of a mushroom more clearly. To make up for the keys in this book, it is easy to scrounge around the net. (Keys help identify mushrooms even if you have no idea what they are.) Best of luck in your hunting.
The best guide for northeastern North America.......2005-11-29
I love this book. Dr. Barron's field guide is filled with gorgeous photos and valuable information. There is no better field guide to the mushrooms of northeastern North America, and Dr. Barron has an incredible knack for describing mushrooms succinctly. Many, many species featured in this book are not featured in other field guides. "Mushrooms of Northeast North America" is a must for anyone interested in identifying mushrooms.
Motivating - my favorite.......2005-11-11
I've had this book two years, and since that time have been hunting fungi to take pictures. They are interesting and make good subjects - and this book is motiviating with its beautiful photographs. A good 'guide' to read in the evening before going out the next day..
This is my favorite of a growing 'fungi guide' library, and the first I use when returning home from the field to look at my photos. [A bit tall for the pocket, but narrower than most field guides.] It does not cover everything I find, but neither do any of the others. You have to use multiple sources to get a feel for what you saw, and I now routinely collect a few specimens of the more common things I see to make spore prints to aid identification (but don't eat them!!). Being able to review your own photos helps. Different books have different pictures of the same species, and sometimes I think they look very different (not the same). That tells this newcomer to be even more wary of thinking I know what I'm looking at! Time and experience do make a difference, however, and as with any hobby one knows more as you go along. One thing I learned is to take a specimen of common things you find and make a spore print. This book sorts them that way.
I do like this book best for its treatment of edibles. It lists a dozen or so that are "easy" to recognize and not likely to confuse with dangerous species. Of course if you don't see one JUST like the picture AND matches the details of the description, beware. Other books may differ on the edibility of these, or even offer some that this book says to avoid. So one must start by assuming all specimens are dangerous. That whittles the amatuer's selection down to those half-dozen or so kinds that all the books agree on. Nothing wrong with that! as I've found several of these 'basic' edibles already (morels, black trumpet, inkycap, puffball).
I've recommended this book to friends, and now do so to you, too.
Great book.......2005-09-08
This is a great book with color photos of mushrooms of North east america.
Great book for all ages.......2004-10-20
I bought this book for my 3 year old niece, who lives in Maine where there is an amazing variety of mushrooms. My sister reported:
She absolutely loves her mushroom book. She took it to bed with her last night, and took it on our carriage trip today. She recognized the big mushroom immediately.
Book Description
For two years naturalist/photographer
Hope Ryden camped in remote areas of the West observing and photographing coyotes. With eloquence and clarity, she describes the private life of this much-maligned animal in a book that has been heralded as the classic treatise on the subject. While observing her controversial subjects, Hope endured hardships and peril, events she weaves into her beautiful story.
"Full of charm and tenacious inquisitiveness as the appealing animal she pleads is allowed to live."
--The Washington Post
"A faultless and reasoned attitude."
--The New York Times

A superior study of Canis latrans.......2006-09-04
While it doesn't have quite the richness of Of Wolves and Men, Lopez's study on Canis lupus, this is nevertheless a superior study of the coyote. Ryden is an excellent author who is obviously both knowledgeable and passionate about her subjects, and God's Dog is fine evidence.
She goes into great detail regarding the natural history of Canis latrans, showing us that the coyote is a lot more social and less worthy of its bad reputation than is often thought. Coyotes are excellent parents, and often work together, though not in as tight a fashion as wolves, particularly when hunting. But Ryden shows us just how fascinating coyotes really are, far from being vermin or malignant lamb killers.
And, as I had hoped, she dispels those lamb-killing myths, showing that coyotes are opportunistic, but nowehre near as destructive as ranchers and hunters would have us believe. I cried as she described how humans have slaughtered coyotes out of prejudice, and how desperate coyotes in Yellowstone beg for food along the road.
While coyotes aren't endangered, and in fact hace expanded their historical territory in many areas, the persecution levied against them is unwarranted. God's Dog is an excellent study on the truth about coyotes, and I highly recommend it to anyone with any interest in nature whatsoever.
Five Yaps uhm... stars for God's Dog!.......2002-03-08
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book for several reasons:
I like Hope Ryden's writing style. She flows very easily and the book just "reads well". Additionally, it's easy to see that she loves and appreciates this beatiful wild creature for what it is - a part of creation, like all other animals, that needs to be allowed to take its proper place in the grand scheme of things.
Lastly, I think that she makes an excellent point concerning the coincidence of coyotes and the grazing of public lands. Western ranchers do have the right to make as much money as they can, for that matter everybody has that same right, but it is ugly and disgusting to see people in our supposedly liberal -minded society to have such blind hatred for a natural predator that does what it does simply to survive.
The point in her story that saddens and disgusts me the most is that money is so, so important to my fellow -countrymen that they will stop at nothing, including killing and exterminating, just for a better income. I only hope that one day these same people will take a more comprehensive look at the world and see how beautiful and wondrous and perfect it already is. Coyotes and all.
Breaking The Myth.......2001-02-07
The writings are scant on the coyote but this book answers many questions. First hand observations, natural history, the past history of man vs. coyote and photographs. There are many wonderful aspects to this book but what is most compelling is the way Hope Ryden shows the coyote as a resourceful, affectionate and intelligent creature rather than its familiar portrayal as a pest and killer. Much more than a field study this book is written from the heart.

In Depth Look at North America's Controversial Canine.......2000-03-17
This is an excellent book. Hope Ryden spent years in Yellowstone and other places watching and learning about coyotes first-hand. The book reflects this, full of the charm, interest, and conflicts of watching coyotes and getting involved in their world- which inevitably means getting involved in the human world, and its mixed emotions towards these canines, as well.

Customer Reviews:
Rookie or Veteran this book is a great read........2007-09-07
I'm 51 years old and I wish I had this info about 35 years ago. Lou does a fine job of getting to the point of what makes the difference between being an average Joe bowhunter and a clean hitting one. I really found his finer tips excellent, that is what I was missing, and he dispelled many of the wives-tales about some items too. One item/tip in particular I hadn't thought about much was belt type straps verse Velcro for my release and also how to measure and set the proper release head position. Bottom line every serious and not so serious bowhunter would benefit by reading this book. I say well done to Lou for his fine and easy to read book.
A must have for serious archers.......2007-07-23
This book covers about everything an archer needs to know in order to become a better archer. I'm sure it will be an important reference for me from this point forward. The author is a bit of a purist and takes things to an extreme that not many archers will go to. But the information is there if you want it. I do wish that he would have dealt more with how to overcome target panic though.
Very good for learning the basics.......2007-03-27
I recently purchased a hunting bow. I read another book first, to cover the basics. I could have probably done that with this book as well. However, Lou goes a step further and shares his rigorous method of perfecting shooting technique as well as tuning the bow and arrows. I think I got a good theoretical foundation to reach the next level. I highly recommend this book to any beginner.
Great Book!.......2006-11-18
If you are serious about bow hunting, BUY THIS BOOK. It won't let you down, unless you own your own bow shop and even at that it would be a great reference. It is totally gear toward hunting and will make you a better shot when that moment of truth arises.
Greatly improved archery knowledge and skill.......2006-11-08
I purchased a compound bow based on the advice from a national "hunters" store (Bass Pro, yes I know they focus on fishing but they tout thier bow shop) and it never quite felt right. After reading this first part of this book I was much better informed on the components of the bow, arrow, and other accessories and how they work together. The book also provides great information on shooting form and hunting. My archery skills have dramatically improved and I give credit to this book (along with a lot of practice). Additionally the book gave excellent information on recurve, long, and olympic style bows, therefore opening other opportunities.

Customer Reviews:
Poor ideas and highly condescending to 2nd time brides.......2006-05-31
To be fair there are a few good ideas but by and large - this is not a good book. In addition - this book's attitude that 2nd time brides really should focus on tiny small weddings that no one will notice. Bridal Bargains is much better and gives practical information.
Not bad ideas.......2006-03-20
The previous review is a bit harsh. To be fair, the book has a number of different price catagories with suggestions on how to achieve them. You can go for the full boat and they give great high end suggestions. You can also cut corners in places and they have those suggestions as well. I didn't go for a foam cake, but if you don't care about the cake why the heck not? If it saves you money and you have a great wedding, who care? And as for using amatures: florists, photographers, DJ's, etc., they are very clear about getting recommendations and checking out their work BEFORE hand. Saving money means putting in extra work, that is the deal.
Really how to have a cheap and tacky wedding.... .......2005-06-09
For starters, if you want to start saving money then don't buy this book or waste the gas to get you to the library! By far the WORST wedding book I have ever read (and I've read lots of them). This book has hideous reception suggestions such as using your parish CAFETERIA to host your event. Using olives as an "appetizer", having a fake foam cake, having an amatuer dj who plays "for free to get experience" and many other bad ideas. Words cannot express how bad I thought this book was. I actually called another woman and read her a few quotes to get her opinion and she laughed so hard she actually cried. The fact that the author kept plugging her other stupid wedding planning books was almost as tacky as some of her suggestions. Right up there with the tackiness of a cash bar.
Very useful but don't depend on the prices.......1999-02-19
Hopefully the more recent editions of this book have more accurate prices. Otherwise, it is an invaluable reference for anyone who is on a very strict budget. Note that this is not a book about how to save a little money. It is most useful for the under $5000 budget range, with ideas for do-it-yourself, rental and other very low-cost options. If you want to work with a consultant, use full-service vendors, and not do a lot of work, this isn't going to help you much. But for those with extremely low budgets, it is probably the most useful book published.
Steal this book!.......1997-08-14
While reading this book, I couldn't help but think that the first line should have been "if you're looking at this book in a bookstore, put it down and try to find it at your local library". Almost all the rest of the advice in the book is like that. Much of it is really clever. Some of it is downright tacky. However, I'm certain that just about all of it will save you money, just as the title boasts.

Big Wedding on a small budget... if it is 1950.......2007-04-19
This book was NOT helpful at all! Ms.Warner's prices are very off base. Please tell me where you can find a "reasonable photographer" for $600 or a seamstress to make you a dress for $321. Also, her decorations sound like something out of a bad high school prom, ie "fifties theme, the Roaring Twenties, or a Renaissance Festive. Start saving money on your wedding by NOT buying this book!
Very Helpful!.......2005-11-29
This book was a lifesaver! I called a friend who was an amateur photographer. I had her take some photos of us and also reviewed her portfolio. We discussed the photos she took of us and what we liked and didn't like. We made a list of must have shots and ideas we had in mind. They came out beautiful!
The cake we purchased from Albertson's. Who would have thought of purchasing a cake from the grocery store? But I saved a couple hundred dollars and it was beautiful and delicious. I knew what I had in mind for the cake and the baker listened to my thoughts and added some from her own experience and we came up with the perfect cake! They make cakes often enough so they turn out beautifully, but not so often that they don't get excited about creating the perfect cake for you.
These are a couple of the suggestions I used to save a ton of money. While not all worked for me, they did help me think creatively in planning and saving money on the things I needed to spend money on.
Be known for the cheapest wedding ever.......2005-03-10
Unless you want all your friends to say, "That was the cheapest wedding ever!", this isn't the right book for you. The tips were unhelpful and unrealistic for anyone who wants to have an elegant wedding on a budget. Examples:
- Don't send any money on decor and flowers and get them from your aunt's backyard. (I'm sorry but I don't know anyone with a wrought-iron bench or potted tree I can borrow.)
- Get the supermarket florist to do your flowers and the supermarket baker to make your wedding cake. (I don't know about your supermarket but I never see the same person twice in those departments, if there is anyone even there.)
- Make all the food for the reception yourself and have the church staff serve it. o_O
- Find an amateur photographer and videographer (and risk not having any memories of your wedding!).
- Basically borrow everything from anyone you know.
Not pratical for someone trying to have an elegant wedding in a big city. Get "Bridal Bargains" by Denise and Alan Fields. It makes much more sense.
A good book for some good ideas.......2004-09-28
Although this is not the best bridal budget book, its still, all in all, a good book with some good ideas. It does stress getting everyone involved, which for some, is welcoming. If you're a bride who has a family who's always giving you their 2 cents worth, this may be the budget planning book for you. It will get everyone involved in planning, helping and setting up for your wedding. If not, there are a few tips you can still use. Diane Warner has many books worth reading and I think she's knowledgeable in her ideas. This book is much better than Denise and Alan Fields' "Bridal Bargains". The book itself is more comfortable to read and hold (it's a standard size book with dark, large print, which "Bridal Bargains" is definetly not!) Besides, Diane Warner has some very original ideas which are legal and "Bridal Bargains" tells you some not so "authorized by law" ideas. Compare the two and I'm sure you'll agree, Diane Warner's "Big Wedding on a Small Budget" is much better! Just glimpse through and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Don't Bother With This Book.......2004-05-18
This book is pretty much everything your friends and family suggested to you when you spoke of having a small budget for your wedding.
The author herself seems a lovely person, but frankly, some of the advice is insultingly simple minded.
The best book to buy is "Bridal Bargains".
Book Description
The cleaning of a work of art often involves removing not only dirt and grime but also unwanted layers of varnish, gilding, and paint from the work's surface. The challenge for conservators lies in finding a cleaning agent that will act on one layer without affecting the layer being preserved
and without leaving any harmful residues on the cleaned work. This book, which examines gel cleaning in the treatment of paintings and painted works of art, presents the methodologies, data, and results of a collaborative project of the Getty Conservation Institute and Winterthur Museum.
Among the issues covered are the theory and application of gel cleaning systems, the detection of residues left on the surfaces of objects cleaned with these systems, research into solvent-gel and solvent residues, stability of surfactants during natural and artificial aging, and recommendations for
formulating gels for specific cleaning tasks.
