Book Description
This book presents the Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) paradigm for modelling agricultural decision-making in three parts. The first part, comprising two chapters, is philosophical in nature and deals with the concepts that define the underlying structure of the MCDM paradigm. The second part is the largest part consisting of five chapters, each of which presents the logic of a specific MCDM technique, and demonstrates how it can be used to model a particular decision problem. In the final part, some selected applications of the MCDM techniques to agricultural problems are presented and thus reinforce the development of an understanding of the MCDM paradigm.
The book has been designed for use at different levels: as a textbook for final year undergraduate and postgraduate courses in modelling for decision-making; as a manual for researchers and practising modellers; and, as general reference on the application of MCDM techniques. Readers with basic appreciation of algebra and linear programming can easily follow the contents of this book.

Book Description
Transnational corporations straddle the globe, largely unseen by the public. Cargill, with its headquarters in the US, is the largest private corporation in North America, and possibly in the world. Cargill trades in food commodities and produces a great many of them: grains, flour, malt, corn, cotton, salt, vegetable oils, fruit juices, animal feeds, and meat. Among its most profitable activities is its trade in the global financial markets. There are few national economies unaffected by Cargill's activities, and few eaters in the North whose food does not pass through Cargill's hands at some point. Yet Cargill remains largely invisible to most people and accountable to no one outside the company.
This is the second edition of an explosive book that breaks the silence on the true extent of Cargill's power and influence worldwide -- its ability to shape national policies, and the implications of these strategies for all of us. Thoroughly revised and updated, 'Invisible Giant' offers shocking new evidence of Cargill's activities since the book was first published in 1995. Kneen examines how it has succeeded in eliminating competition by undertaking joint ventures with virtually all of its supposed competitors. He shows how this massive corporation continues to acquire and divest, extending its grip even further in what amounts to almost total control of the global food system.
Customer Reviews:
A Gilmpse Inside the Giant.......2002-12-04
No other company epitomizes the global concentration in worldwide commodity trading and processing like Cargill. Although it's the largest privately-held company in the world, few people realize the scope of Cargill's activities or its influence on the food we eat and even the salt we put on our roads in the wintertime.
Kneen's second edition of this book, published in early 2002, is timely and poignant. Even though at times it reads almost like a textbook, Kneen's work meticulously describes Cargill's business segments and its geographic reach. Cargill's classic approach is to enter a market in a modest way and establish a "beachhead." From there, it expands its ownership and influence, often becoming the dominant force in an industry. In addition, Cargill has the political muscle to affect public policy towards trade and agriculture, not only at the Federal level in the U. S., but also through state, provincial and local governments worldwide.
Although no fan of Cargill or big agribusiness in general, Kneen nevertheless presents a fairly balanced, at times almost antiseptic analysis of this secretive and very powerful company.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the influence of large corporations on key economic sectors - especially agriculture.

Book Description
In this new, enlarged edition, John Opie updates his groundbreaking work on the environmental history of the Ogallala aquifer and plains farming. He addresses the impact of the 1996 Farm Bill (Federal Agricultural Improvement and Reform Act) and looks at the recent movement of industrial hog farming onto the plains. Opie also develops his argument for the plains as a “moral geography,” a view involving the recognition by society that it has an obligation to balance the responsibility for conserving natural resources with that for keeping a regional people—the family farmers—in operation.
Customer Reviews:
A very good introduction to this topic.......2000-08-12
A few years ago I came across a magazine article that discussed the importance of the Ogallala Aquifer to American agriculture, geography, and society. Realizing that I knew absolutely nothing about this topic I picked up John Opie's book. It's safe to say that I now know more about the Ogallala Aquifer than I could ever have imagined possible.
The book begins with a discussion of the geology of the aquifer, and then moves into the history of irrigation efforts on the Plains since the 19th century, and finally to a discussion of the various irrigation technologies currently used to exploit the aquifer. There is ample discussion along the way about how these technologies have changed over the years as environmental consciousness and the problems of declining aquifer levels have become more prevalent.
This book is not only a very informative look at the Ogallala Aquifer but is pleasantly readable as well. And now that it is (finally) available in a more affordable paperback edition, I'm going to go buy a copy for myself.

Book Description
Over the past few years the cocoa market has had to modify how it operates. Continued low prices, fewer companies trading, and both the perceived and real element of del credere risks have brought about the change. Those that remain have had to return to the fundamentals of their business - knowing the needs of their clients and above all, knowing the commodity. This affects everyone directly and indirectly involved in cocoa. In the past, exporters could rely on dealers sorting out some of their problems, and the factories off-loaded much of the risk of delivery onto the dealer. Current trading conditions make this more difficult. People outside this chain now have larger roles in cocoa than in the past, in particular, the banks, but also the shipping companies and the warehouses. All those in the chain of trade, from the exporter, dealer, and broker through the factory must improve not only their understanding of the market but of the difficulties faced by others in the commodity. The new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. It reflects changes such as the effects of trade liberalization in cocoa, the use of vegetable fats in chocolate manufacture, and the increase in bulk cocoa. It provides the details of the new LIFFE contract, and the upcoming CAL and AFCC contracts. The International Cocoa Trade helps all those involved in the industry. It supplies information about the cocoa trade and creates a better understanding about the industry as a whole. Starting with the history of European and North American development of cocoa, the book covers agronomics and marketing, actuals and futures markets, contracts, supply and demand, quality, and processing.

Book Description
The most difficult questions facing organizations today do not have scientifically or mathematically provable solutions. Many answers that do exist depend upon time and circumstance. Systems Architecting of Organizations: Why Eagles Can't Swim tackles a very difficult dilemma: how do even highly respected organizations maintain their vaunted excellence, accommodate the new world of global communications, transportation, economics and multinational security, and still survive against stiff competition already in place? As they are finding out, depending upon the circumstances, the demands of excellence on the one hand, and of change on the other, can be cruelly irreconcilable. This book does not just describe business strengths and weaknesses. First, it identifies potential weaknesses, then offers guidelines and insights to address them. Its approach is architectural and heuristic. Second, this book is about maintaining success in a dynamic world, not about achieving it in a static one; few are clear on what to do and not to do in the face of major change. Systems Architecting of Organizations: Why Eagles Can't Swim helps professionals gain new perspectives when reviewing their own organizations and to see problems and opportunities previously not apparent. Features
Customer Reviews:
Author comments on the motivations for writing the book.......1999-09-29
Systems architecting has been shown in two earlier books not only to exist but to be key to successful systems and product lines. Fellow executives asked for a comparable book addressing organizations as systems, which they clearly are, and especially for applicable insights for dealing with the nonquantifiable issues confronting both executives and professionals in a drastically changed international and technological world. Good organizations were failing, disappearing, being merged, consolidating or expanding, succeeding or failing -- for reasons they couldn't fathom. The book shows what, why, how, and when, folowed by insights on how to deal with them. It represents the technical management experience of seven, now retired, chief executives representing 15 major organizations, public and private, military and commercial. To the author's, publisher's and associates' knowledge it is as unprecedented as the dilemmas now faced by executives and professionals today.

Book Description
Impacts of technological change have historically been assessed only after the passage of a significant period of time. It is then that historians recreate the decisions that were made, sort out the influencing factors, and debate in hindsight the options that were available at the time. Sheldon Krimsky, consistent with the importance of his subject, telescopes this process by providing contemporary readers a broad overview of the first ten years of the industrial revolution in applied molecular genetics. He discusses the birth and expectations of the biotechnology industry, the response to products of genetic engineering, perspectives on risk assessment from different sectors of the scientific community, and public initiatives to regulate new products. Krimsky explores the social and political discourse on the direction of biotechnology, and offers the most detailed examination to date of the controversy over the environmental release of genetically engineered organisms. Finally, he takes a critical look at the conventional role of technology assessment and suggests an alternative model that fits more closely with the needs of an environmentally sensitive world. Krimsky's thought-provoking work offers readers a unique opportunity to understand what questions were being asked, what options were available, and what decisions were being made when the industrial application of genetic technologies was still in its infancy. His insider's perspective will interest those working in the fields of biology and social issues; science, technology, and society; and the sociology of science. Challenging, cautioning, and balanced, this book is required reading for all who are seriously concerned with the relationship of emerging technologies to society.

The Emotional Lives of Animals: A Leading Scientist Explores Animal Joy, Sorrow, and Empathy - and Why They Matter
ASIN: 1566396565 |
Book Description
Seeing a cat rubbing against a person, Charles Darwin described her as "in an affectionate frame of mind"; for Samuel Barnett, a behavioralist, the mental realm is beyond the grasp of scientists and behavior must be described technically, as a physical action only. What difference does this difference make? In Eileen Crist's analysis of the language used to portray animal behavior, the difference "is that in the reader's mind the very image of the cat's 'body' is transfigured
from an experiencing subject
into a vacant object."
Images of Animals examines the literature of behavioral science, revealing how works with the common aim of documenting animal lives, habits, and instincts describe "realities that are world's apart." Whether the writer affirms the Cartesian verdict of an unbridgeable chasm between animals and humans or the Darwinian panorama of evolutionary continuity, the question of animal mind is ever present and problematic in behavioral thought. Comparing the naturalist writings of Charles Darwin, Jean Henri Fabre, and George and Elizabeth Peckham to works of classical ethology by Konrad Lorenz and Nikolaas Tinbergen and of contemporary sociobiology, Crist demonstrates how words matter. She does not attempt to defend any of these constructions as a faithful representation of animal existence, but to show how each internally coherent view molds the reader's understanding of animals. Rejecting the notion that "a neutral instrument in the depiction of animals and, in particular, it is never! impartial with respect to the question of animal mind."
Customer Reviews:
Insightful treatment of crucial social and scientificissues........1998-12-08
I had the opportunity to read this book in manuscript form. Its treatment of the ethical and scientific diemensions of animal behavior is crucial for anyone wanting a better understanding of the values underlying contemporary culture generally, and of the practice and conceptualization of science in particular. Professor Crist's critical inquiry into "animal mind" is thought-provoking and timely in an era when homo sapiens are as "endangered" by unsustainable conceptualizations of "nature" as their more "wild" bretheren.

Customer Reviews:
Our Mickey: Cherished Book.......2005-08-03
I am a huge Yankee fan and I have read a lot of books about them including some about Mickey Mantle. Out of all the books about the Mick this is my favorite.
Bill Liederman and Maury Allen have created a different perspective about Mantle by not telling about his life and career but letting his freinds and other famous people who knew Mickey best, write a paragraph about experiences with him. It shows the real Mickey Mantle and some of the funny and great things he did.
The book is divided in four categories; Mickey as a Yankee and Teamate, Mickey as Legend, Mickey as Personality, and Mickey as a Ballplayer. The book has people such as Whitey Ford, Willie Mays, Billy Chrystal, Joe Torre, Donald Trump, Regis Philbin, and more.
I loved reading this book and I recommend it to not just a Yankee fan but any baseball fan or someone who lived during his career and remember him.
A 4-bagger.......2004-04-19
First, I am not a Yankees fan, but they have had some great players over the years and Mantle is, arguably, one of the best, and I have always admired his considerable talent. Everyone knows his statistics and how he liked to party, but I was looking for some insights into the man, and this book delivered. The book is a series of reminiscences by teammates, opponents, writers, friends and people whose lives were touched in some way by Mantle. Some are funny, some are poignant, but all of them together give a picture of the man. If you enjoy reading about the person behind the legend, and how he was perceived by others who knew him, then you'll enjoy this book. It's a good read and I recommend it heartily.
Congratulations.......2004-04-13
Well done! I remember when you two were kicking around the idea of a Mickey Mantle book. Congratulations on all your great ideas coming to fruition. You two make an excellent team. Good luck, I hope you sell them all! I look forward to your next collaboration.
A fresh take on the legend of the Mick.......2004-03-31
There are lots of Mickey Mantle books out there, but I've never seen another like this. Anecdotes about Mickey from friends, teammates, and notable fans whose lives he touched. It's a fun, fast read as each story gives you a new perspective on one of the most colorful Yankees of all time. Unlike the standard-issue biographies out there, this book reads like a series of quick conversations and it is fascinating and entertaining to hear from such diverse names as Yogi Berra, David Halberstam, Regis Philbin, and Willie Mays. I learned a lot that I didn't know about Mickey, and I highly recommend this for you other Yankee fans out there.

Book Description
In every field of study there is one book that rises above the rest in stature and authority and becomes the standard work in the field. In genealogy that book is Val Greenwood's Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy. Arguably the best book ever written on American genealogy, it is the text of choice in colleges and universities or wherever courses in American genealogy are taught. Of the dozens of textbooks, manuals, and how-to books that have appeared over the past twenty-five years, it is the one book that is consistently praised for setting a standard of excellence. In a word, The Researcher's Guide has become a classic. While it instructs the researcher in the timeless principles of genealogical research, it also identifies the various classes of records employed in that research, groups them in convenient tables and charts, gives their location, explains their uses, and evaluates each of them in the context of the research process. Designed to answer practically all the researcher's needs, it is both a textbook and an all-purpose reference book. And it is this singular combination that makes The Researcher's Guide the book of choice in any genealogical investigation. It is also the reason why if you can afford to buy only one book on American genealogy in a lifetime, this has to be it. This new 3rd edition incorporates the latest thinking on genealogy and computers, specifically the relationship between computer technology (the Internet and CD-ROM) and the timeless principles of good genealogical research. It also includes a new chapter on the property rights of women, a revised chapter on the evaluation of genealogical evidence, and updated information on the 1920 census. Little else has changed, or needs to be changed, because the basics of genealogy remain timeless and immutable. This 3rd edition of The Researcher's Guide, then, is a clear, comprehensive, and up-to-date account of the methods and aims of American genealogy--an essential text for the present generation of researchers--and no sound genealogical project is complete without it.

Useful Tool for the Amateur Genealogist.......2007-08-16
This is a great primer for researchers. Basic research techniques are explained and detailed. Lots of tips and tricks. Some of the techniques are a little too detailed like how to compose a letter and create a manual filing system but all in all a very worthwhile book. Also some of the information is a bit dated but most of it is timeless. I'm certain that I'll be referring to it for many years to come.
Must have even for beginners.......2007-05-22
This book was purchased as a textbook for a research class. Had I known this valuable and helpful information, much of my past research time would have been shortened and to the point. Especially great is the rational behind the suggestions and the reviews of important points.
Absolutely essential for all American genealogists.......2002-07-23
Since its first edition in 1972, and especially with the completely revised and greatly expanded 2nd edition in 1990, this comprehensive work has become the standard guide and textbook in the pursuit of U.S. genealogical research. Beginning with the background to research -- what "research" actually means, specialized terminology, basic principles, library fundamentals, and all the rest -- Greenwood teaches you, with great clarity and many examples, how to identify what information you need, how to go about locating it, and how to organize it once you've found it. The second, much larger part of the book, leads the reader through the use, analysis, and interpretation of all the major sorts of documents and records out there: Compiled sources (including a discussion of the nature of compilations), vital records, census returns, wills and probate records (and how to become comfortable with legal terminology), local and federal land records, civil and criminal court records, church records, records relating to immigration, military records, and cemetery and burial records. He discusses the nature of abstracting, clears up common misconceptions about court records, points out the limitations of the census, and presents a largely rewritten discussion of the standards of evidence. When the 2nd edition came out a decade ago, the author thought his book would probably never need another major revision, just minor updates. But that was before the personal computer and Internet revolutions forced him to rethink his position, and this edition includes an entirely new and rather lengthy chapter on the appropriate use of the computer in genealogical research and also on its built-in limitations. He also took the opportunity to add a chapter on the legal issues relating to women's property rights, and (of course) made all those minor corrections and updates he had expected. Bluntly, if you can afford only one how-to book for your home genealogy shelf, get this one.
BASIC BUT EFFECTIVE.......2001-06-16
Everyone seems to agree that this book is the standard text in genealogical research. The reason for this is the inclusion of sufficient detail to be useful without sacrificing scope and breadth of coverage. Prior editions gave short shrift to the computer revolution in genealogy. The third edition remedies this. Why not five stars? The writing fails to inspire. Granted this is a textbook on a sometimes dry and technical topic. The author also provides the right approach to the topic by focusing on story telling, basic research and avoiding beginners pitfalls. But I am still looking for the genealogy book that takes the topic to a high level. Genealogy is not just about correct principles, accurate research or even the stories that Val Greenwood encourgages us to write. Genealogy is about identity, individual, familial and national. If we are satisfied merely to explore our curiosity and to get the facts straight, then this is a dead science. No one seems more qualified than Val Greenwood to lead us into this deeper meaning. Perhaps a next edition or thinner separte volume will take us there.
Recommended for basic library genealogy collections........2000-06-04
An excellent reference recommended for libraries building basic collections on genealogy. Val Greenwood's Researcher's Guide To American Genealogy, 3rd Edition provides important updated links between computers and genealogical research, including chapters on property rights of women, new insights on the evaluation of genealogical evidence, and updated information on the 1020 census.

Caspar David Friedrich and the Subject of Landscape
ASIN: 0892366745 |
Book Description
Carl Gustav Carus (1789-1869)--court physician to the king of Saxony--was a naturalist, amateur painter, and theoretician of landscape painting whose Nine Letters on Landscape Painting is an important document of early German romanticism and an elegant appeal for the integration of art and
science.
Carus was inspired by and had contacts with the greatest German intellectuals of his day. Carus prefaced his work with a letter from his correspondence with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was his primary mentor in both science and art. His writings also reflect, however, the influence of the German
natural philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, especially Schelling's notion of a world soul, and the writings of the naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Carus played a role in the revolution in landscape painting taking place in Saxony around Caspar David Friedrich. The first
edition appears here in English for the first time.

Excellent Introduction.......2006-05-03
Beginning and less-experienced painters will probably find a great deal to emulate in this British import. There are several photos of still-life paintings, mostly by contemporary artists, a number by the author himself. There are step-by-step breakdowns of the painting process, following several works from the bare canvas or paper to a shiny fresh finish. And for more experienced and intermediate artists, there is a chapter at the back of the book introducing advanced techniques to produce works with a subtler, more finished look.
One of the major selling points is that this book does not limit itself to a single painting form. The author instructs the reader in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and even pastel drawing. A beginner who is just learning art and is shopping for a personal form can try several methods out and find one which works. And a more experienced painter who is looking to branch out and shoulder new challenges can compare options until one stands out.
Of course no book is perfect. The paintings reproduced in here are photo-reduced to fit the coffee-table format, so you can't study the artists' brushwork. Photos of artists' supplies have a disproportionate share of Winsor & Newton, almost like a commercial. The author uses jargon, like mentioning mixing linseed and turps into your oil paints, without bothering to explain what this means to beginners. And the step-by-step instructions, though good, sometimes have too much material added between steps, so you can't quite figure out what happened between pictures.
Despite these complaints, I would have to recommend this book to students. This book is good for self-instruction, and could probably be used as a classrom text as well. No book will ever deliver a skill wrapped up like a Christmas present--you have to knuckle down and actually practice the painting techniques detailed here--but if you actually follow the author's pointers you'll be headed in the right direction.

An excellent, hands-on guide........2007-04-10
Practicing artist and tutor Ted Gould presents An Introduction to Painting Landscapes is an instructional and practical guide for artists of all experience levels, though familiarity with the most basic fundamentals of art is presumed. Chapters cover the materials and equipment needed, basic painting techniques for different media, sketching, handling the complexities of color and light, issues of composition, and more. Full color illustrations on every page walk the reader through the creation process, and give examples of techniques discussed. An excellent, hands-on guide.
Not so great.......2006-06-15
I don't like this book. There's too much material on getting ready to paint. There are very, very, brief topics on most techniques of applying paint in most mediums. Unfortunately, they're not for teaching you but simply to say "here's a way this paint can be applied and it can give this effect." Lastly, when it comes to his demonstrations... too many schools of painting combined with too many mediums. Stick to one kind of paint and give demos in several schools (impressionist, colorist, realist) or stick to one school and use different paints. As it is, the book doesn't adequately illustrate either the schools of the mediums. To top that off, I just plain think most of the artwork in the book stinks, but that is purely a personal taste.
