Book Description
What did the Latin American economies achieve in the course of a hundred years? Per capita income increased fivefold, yet today it is lower in proportion to the industrial countries than it was a century ago. Modern infrastructure was built and industry grew to 20 percent of GDP, but the region's share of world trade was halved. Social indicators such as life expectancy and literacy improved dramatically, but inequity and poverty worsened.
This comprehensive economic history examines the political, institutional and economic forces that shaped Latin America's complex and often paradoxical development process over the twentieth century. By examining quantitative data alongside the region's political economies, the book provides historical context for the development strategies, choices, successes, and failures of the Latin American countries.
Commissioned by IDB President Enrique V. Iglesias, the book draws on studies and consultancies prepared by a number of specialists on Latin America. A comprehensive Statistical Appendix provides regionwide and country-by-country data in such areas as GDP, manufacturing, sector productivity, prices, trade, income distribution, and living standards.
Moving chronologically through the century, the book focuses on two dramatic waves of expansion that shaped regional growth: first, an export boom as the century began, and second, import-substitution industrialization corresponding to renewed expansion of the international economy following the Depression and the two World Wars. Following the debt crisis of the 1980s, Latin America at century's end has returned to where it began, with reliance on the free market and export-led growth. However, the book outlines the changes in economic structures and approaches that make today's economic scenario radically different from the old.

A Fascinating Way to Study History!!!.......2001-02-10
"Progress, Poverty and Exclusion. An Economic History of Latin America in the 20th Century" is a fascinating book from the cover to the annexes. The contrast between a XX th century modern city and a shanty town showed in the cover gives the reader an initial idea of the position of the writer regarding Latin American economic development. Poverty, exclusion and income concentration are problems that are inherent to the vast majority of Latin American economies and Rosemary Thorp makes sure that the reader remembers that throughout the book. Her social focus is perfectly compatible with a serious economic analysis based on well-documented facts and statistical data. Every student of Latin American history, politics and economics should have this book in his or her shelves. Furthermore, any scholar dealing with Latin American issues should not forget to read Thorp's work "every morning" to remember what is that the Latin American economies achieved in the course of a hundred years. Finally, I highly recommend accompanying the reading of this book with another masterpiece, "The Economic History of Latin America" by Victor Bulmer-Thomas

Book Description
"A sensitive and articulate observer, [Schaller] is at his best when he is describing the forest itself . . . . This is an exciting book. Although Schaller feels that this is 'not an adventure book,' few readers will be able to agree."—Irven DeVore, Science
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Gorilla study and more.......2005-03-12
This is a wonderful combination of anthropology, history, ecology, and gorilla studies. Schaller writes in a captivating and inviting style. I loved that he presented his datea on gorillas, the focus of his presence in Africa, within his own experience there. Imbeded within was ecological commentary expectable with endandered creatures; however, Schaller managed to make this contribute favorably to his book rather than the whining diatribe it could have been.
Highly recommendable for both social reading as well as a suppliment to an anthropology class.
Fascinating story.......1999-08-31
This is the fascinating story of the author's expedition to study Mountain Gorillas in 1959-60. Told as a detailed narrative, it is as much an adventure story as a scientific analysis.
From the riveting first encounter with a family of gorillas through the identification of several distinct groups, their daily routine is revealed. The gentleness that Schaller found dispelled many long held myths about Gorilla behavior.
Beyond the gorillas, this is also the complete story of a region, its people and other flora and fauna. The issues of preservation of these animals and their habitat are much the same as those faced today.
This is the documentation of an important pioneering work that paved the way for Fossey and other researchers who would follow. Illustrated with photos and maps, it is a compelling read from cover to cover.
A Look at the life of Gorillas through Schaller's Eyes.......1998-09-08
George Schaller takes you with him as he goes to the Virunga Volcanoes to study the Gorillas. He takes a look at the gorillas, but with a more personal approach than with "The Mountain Gorilla". Instead of pouring out scientific facts, he shares with you some of his feelings and experiences as he watched them. This was a refreshing look at the life of gorillas from his own perspective. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in Gorillas.

Book Description
Black Belt Magazine called Pankration "the most practical street combat form of the martial arts that I have ever seen". Throughout this fascinating and completely updated volume, Jim Arvanitis provides extensive insight into the facts and myths of pankration's early history (including its inclusion in the earliest Olympic Games), its techniques and strategies, and its impact on today's martial arts.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-10-01
Well first of all when I saw this book I was a little if-ie about buying this book since so many others suck so I checked the reviews and they were surprizingly amazing so I took a chance and loved it, only problem I saw in the book was that the move on the cover of the book isnt show (its a spartan disarmment technique SHOWN ON HUMAN WEAPON ([...] then search human weapon) UNDER PANKRATION) but other than that he goes into amazing depth with the moves and combinations (amazing) with a brief chapter on the history of the sport (very basic) but he shows everything that a modern mma fighter does and wrestlers like me (judo sombo jujitsu) would do to make this review short I would say definitly get the book if you would like to learn the moves and training to go with it also!!!!
Excellent read!.......2007-01-11
This is definitely Grandmaster Arvanitis best work to date on his revised form of the ancient Greek martial arts. It is both thorough and clearly explained as is usual for this expert teacher and is a must for anyone interested in Pankration. In fact, it is such an excellent book I would recommend it to anyone as it could easily tempt someone to take up the art. The first section of the book deals with the history and evolution of the art and it's inclusion in the early olympics while the second half covers clearly the physical components involved in modern Pankration such as the ready position, mobility, strikes, upright grappling and ground fighting. This is definitely one of those books I will read again and again and as such can't recommend it highly enough!
a diamond in the rough.......2005-11-12
Paladin press publishes a lot of crap from charlatains and armchair, wanna- be tough guys. This book is an exception. Jim Arvanitis has been around for a long time and the techniques presented in this book are top notch. A lot of martial arts books suck because they are poorly written and have photos of techniques which are almost impossible to follow. Mr. Arvanitis' book however, has very good step by step photos of his applications, as well as very well articulated explainations for them. This book is worth every penny you'll pay for it an you'll keep it around for reference for many years. I suggest you buy it ASAP, or better yet- find a Pankration teacher ASAP! Pankration is effective for self defense, fitness AND the ring, and very few fighting arts can claim ALL of that.
Awesome book!!.......2004-01-19
This latest book by Mr. Arvanitis is a work of art and certainly lives up to the legendary status that he has achieved over the past three decades. Obviously his knowledge on the art/sport that he alone revived reflects a very passionate individual. There are plenty of easy-to-follow photos of the techniques, thorough explanations of their execution, and excellent historical references on the ancient sport and battlefield form throughout. The artwork of ancient pankratiasts in the opening chapter gets the book off to a great start. Pankration was the precursor to mixed martial arts, practiced over 2500 years ago, and whose practice and traditions were perpetuated by the author since the late-1960s. He explains his lifelong dedication to rigorous physical training and researching the ancient concepts and skills. These experiences were used as a blueprint in reviving the modern derivative, integrating techniques and strategies from various sources (i.e. boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, submission grappling, etc.) to build its technical foundation. This is precisely how the ancient pankration was formulated ... by combining elements of Greek boxing and wrestling into one cohesive Olympic combat sport. The content also does a neat job covering various training equipment, and exercises and drills to prepare both mind and body for any situation, be it upright or on the ground. The material is well-organized and makes for a great read. My one concern is that I would have liked more advanced applications. However, it's mentioned in the intro that this will be covered in future books. For anyone looking to expand their knowledge of mixed martial arts, this one comes highly-recommended.
Excellent Revision.......2003-09-07
This book is a rewrite and expanded version of Mr. Arvanitis's previous book on Greek pankration. There are additional photos and new sections included. The quality of the book matches that of the content presented. Although there are many fighting skills that can be found in other martial arts systems, Arvanitis emphasizes the "core" pankration techniques by their classic Greek terms. Nice touch!! This book is well laid out and easy to follow. There is a wealth of material here from a man who has been an innovative force behind MMA since the early-1970s. This is the best coverage of this ancient art to date.
Book Description
A unique book that reveals the hip talk and occasionally lewd eloquence of the Spnaish commonly spoken in Mexcio and Latin America. Whether you want to use the words, avoid them, or simply want to understand them when you hear them, this book clears up the confusion. Also includes examples of slang commonly found in graffiti on buildings, bridges, and fences.

Que Loco, what a great book.......2007-02-19
I live in Southern California, I brought this to work and all the hispanic folks loved this thing. One guy said "wow, we use that all the time and this is the first time I really know what it means, now I can tell my kids" Very neat book, very useful, muy bueno.
THIS IS A RIPOFF.......2004-01-29
This book has been ripped off from the true author! The editor put it under her name, but it's obvious I wrote it...see earlier editions available on amazon.com
Don't buy this damn think...you would be supporting theft of intellectual material. Better to buy my other book, Mexican Slang 101 from this address http://slang101.freemaz.com
Thanks for you help...this is just so greedy and unfair.
Very comprehensive and accurate.......2004-01-09
I love this book. It will introduce you to the real, homemade language of the Mexican people. Have you studied Spanish for ages, yet when you hear young Mexicans talking to each other on the street you have no idea what they're talking about? Well, it's probably because you aren't familiar with the Mexican slang, which is real important in understanding everyday Mexican speech. This book shows you how Mexicans actually speak. It's got all of the most frequently heard words and phrases like "guey," "chingon," and "canton". It omits some common slang like "No manches" and "orale" but other than that I highly recommend this book.

Great Book.......2007-07-23
I started drawing in Pen & ink back in high school-- IMHO it is one of the most versitile mediums out there. I found this book to be a great resource and one that I use often as a source of reference and inspiration before I begin a drawing. While some of the images may be a little dark--I think if you look at the technique used in creating them you can gain a whole new understanding of the medium. The section on the different types of materials is useful. If you have dabbled in pen & ink and have become addicted to it--then I highly recommend this book. If you are someone that has never tried inking and you want to learn this book might not be for you.
Excellent reference and procedures.......2007-02-21
This book presents procedures you can try at home to better your technique no matter what level you're at. The author generously shares his accumulation of knowledge. Very modern and contemporary. The illustrations are inspiring, you'll want to drop everything and start your own drawings!
Borrow this book from the library.......2005-09-18
I bought this book because it was part of the class list of a course I signed up for. The class was cancelled for lack of registration, and I am now stuck with it.
The most interesting part is a listing of materials used in pen and ink drawing. As for the actual instructions, they are fairly confusing and far from sufficient. They assume you already know what you are doing. This is not a book for beginners, as pen and ink drawing is definitely not for beginners in drawing. This medium requires a great deal of control. There is not much room for corrections or second thoughts. In this regard, it's similar to sumi-e (oriental brush and ink painting).
There are no step-by-step pictures. I would have liked to see how ink washes are done, for example. There are practically no drawings of landscapes. Most of the illustrations are the author's work, and I must admit I found many of them very disturbing and dark. This is not an enjoyable book to leaf through. It might give you nightmares!
I purchased this book used, at the lowest price I could find. I would not recommend buying it at all.
Good for int/adv, great materials explination, inpirational.......2001-06-12
The is a wonderful book for intermediate to advanced pen and ink artists looking for a thorough explanation of materials and a great discussion of the methodology of creating fantastic pen and ink artwork. It is packed with a wide variety of examples that are sure to inspire you.
The book starts out with a large (almost 50 pages) and excellent overview of materials and tools. I love it that the author takes the time to discuss numerous brands of pens, inks and papers instead of just generalizing them.
The following section focuses on ink drawing techniques. There is a good discussion of gray tones, parallel lines, value changes, hatching, cross-hatching and patterns. Then there are a few demonstrations of brush techniques such as laying a wash and using white on toned paper. Mixed media demos mixing wax crayons and acrylic with ink are also here as well as scratchboard and practice exercises.
The basic elements of drawing follow, including things like texture, shape, volume, color, rhythm and scale. Next, drawing strategies are covered. There are no projects or any step-by-step techniques per se. Rather, the author shows you examples of his artwork with advice on his approach, concepts and techniques. I recommend this book for those with some pen & ink drawing experience seeking ideas, tips and inspiration. There is a good list of suppliers in the back.
Smith's surreal images and mastery of a variety of styles make this a book to enjoy for the artwork it contains as well as the instruction it provides.
pen and ink for the elite.......2000-09-01
Most art technique books are either entirely for the sunday painter or they are so elitist, you need to be a phd to understand them. This book works on different levels so everyone can enjoy it. The sections cover materials and drawing techniques. My one qualm is some rather lame examples of art. A little too conzervative for my tastes. This is ART, not woolworths!
