    Book Description

What are the links between the impact of increasing globalization and the advent of the knowledge economy on the spatial distribution of economic activity? How can we explain the paradox of growing trans-nationalization of the production of goods and services and the tendency for certain kinds of activityDSparticularly knowledge intensive activities - to be concentrated or clustered in one place? In this changing environment how do firms make decisions about location, and the development and deployment of their distinctive capabilities? These are some of the important questions addressed in this volume by a team of leading international scholars looking at these dynamics in broad scope. The book presents different disciplinary approaches to the knowledge economy viewed from an international perspective, and includes detailed case analysis of its impact in different parts of the world. It moves between the supra- national macro region and the micro cluster, as well as looking at associated infrastructural and policy responses. This is a rich and informative book that attempts to explain some of the key dynamics and characteristics of the new global economy. It will be essential reading for academics in business, economics, geography and political science wanting to get to grips with current thinking and developments.

This breakthrough book provides practical applications of how to transform companies to operate on the "edge of chaos" based on the principles of living, self-organizing systems.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great organization building book, but not related to Chaos.......2003-06-26

Overall, I think this is a great book about organization building. It mainly talks about how you can change an organization. You need to face the challenge of "shared vision", "corporate culture", and "goverance". As a change agent, you need to improve your personal leadership/personal mastery, relationship and dialogue with others.

The reason I only give it 4-star is because I can't find a strong link between all these great lessons and Chaos/Complexity/Quantum. I think all these lessons exist everywhere in all great organization building book.

Net, I recommend this book to anyone who are interested in organization building, but not about Chaos/complexity theory, etc.

2 out of 5 stars Some good insights in a miasma of thought........1999-08-14

While there are some good insights into human nature and life in this book, it is such a distraction when an author litters their ideas with leftist dogma. If you are going to refer to economic phenomena, you should understand what you are writing.

      5 out of 5 stars A GREAT book & a must-read for anyone in business today........1999-04-22

Kay Gilley, keynote speaker, executive development consultant, and author of Leading from the Heart and The Alchemy of Fear:

This isn't a good book: it is a GREAT book. And, it is a must-read for anyone doing business on the bridge into the 21st Century.

Mark Youngblood has done a masterful job of simply and succinctly helping us understand the promise of ever-present, fast-paced, and dynamic change in our businesses. Encouraging us to transcend the limitations of Newtonian organizations, he brings tangible application to what it means to lead and work in a quantum one. He offers the promise that when we learn to embrace with the fluidity of chaos that we will be both more effective and enjoy our lives and work more. His examples are simple and direct and bring crystal clarity to the concepts he presents.

My personal copy is always near at hand, well-marked with dog-eared pages, sticky notes, and a long list of page reference notations in the back. When readers show up at my book signing with books that look like this, I know they have been well used...and my copy Life at the Edge of Chaos has indeed been well used. I can't recommend this book too highly.

5 out of 5 stars Courageous steps to create non-toxic organizations........1998-01-15

Youngblood takes a big risk. He challenges the most essential, basic assumptions about how organizations work. By providing solid historical evidence of how our current paradigms were developed, he assures the reader that change is possible. Since big business is the single largest entity on the planet, and therefore responsible for the whole, my hope is that major corporations will embrace the creative programs proposed by Youngblood and have the courage to change to environments which are non-toxic for employees, stakeholders, communities and our planet.

5 out of 5 stars practical marriage of mgt, theory & quantum principles.......1997-12-11

As the primary author of the world's only organization theory textbook with a transformational perspective, I appreciate Mark's courage and boldness in articulating this new paradigm of organization. This book picks up where mine (and others) leave off: he clearly spells out a "road map" of where we are organizationally, how we got there, and what to do about it. A stunning achievement!!!!

Wilson and Reeder's Mammal Species of the World is the classic reference book on the taxonomic classification and distribution of the more than 5400 species of mammals that exist today. The third edition includes detailed information on nomenclature and, for the first time, common names. Each concise entry covers type locality, distribution, synonyms, and major reference sources. The systematic arrangement of information indicates evolutionary relationships at both the ordinal and the family level. This indispensable reference work belongs in public and academic libraries throughout the world and on the shelf of every biologist who works with mammals.

        5 out of 5 stars Good Product.......2006-03-16

Good book, useful, and essential for students and scientists interested to work with mammals.

        5 out of 5 stars a mammalogist bible.......2001-10-22

without doubt Wilson and Reeder's book is THE source of information for people looking for mammals in museums and old scientific publications. the superb listing of synonyms, the listings of the scientist describing the clades, and the brief biogeographic notes makes this book invaluable for people having any taxonomic question. The main attitude seems to be one of splitters, giving a lot of specific names to various populations others consider a single species, the biogeography can be a little more detailed, but there is no other source with that thoroughness and completeness in mammalian taxonomy.
I'm anxiously waiting a new edition

I have lived in the area 23 years, knew there were hikes out there, but finally picked up the body and began hiking after checking this book out of the library. the hiking areas are diverse, plains, mountains, foothills. well documented and explained on distance, etc. I have other hiking books for the colorado springs area, but this is the first one I actually used. I think it's small size helps, easy to carry along, light and compact. ps I hate capital letters

              Book Description

The concept of customer relationship management (CRM) has grown from the loosely defined methodology of using customer transactions for developing profiles on customers to the well-defined business process of using sophisticated tools and analytical processes for managing each customer on an individual basis. CRM integrates e-mail and the PDA with the day planner, electronic scheduler, client database, and a number of other business management tools so you can create a single point from which to manage customer relationships. The Customer Relationship Management Systems Handbook provides a complete and detailed analysis of CRM, its origins, rationale, implementation strategies, core technologies, and benefits. The author takes readers through the evolution of CRM- from its early beginning as a tool for better managing and utilizing vast amounts of customer transaction data acquired in day-to-day transactions to today's sophisticated data warehouse-based systems. The text was researched, formatted, and written for IS professionals who need a full understanding of what is involved in the successful development and implementation of a CRM. To highlight the significant benefits of implementing CRM strategies, the book provides examples of successful CRM implementations from a broad range of business sectors. These implementations, presented in a case study format, demonstrate implementation processes, appropriate technologies, and vendor solutions that work. Wherever possible, illustrations are used to enhance the textual presentation. The complete analysis of CRM provided in the Customer Relationship Management Systems Handbook will enable you to accomplish what many businesses fail to do-put the customer first.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Blend of business and technical with more focus on technical.......2002-08-25

This book covers some of the business aspects of CRM, but is more slanted towards the technical underpinnings. This is not a criticism, but to set expectations. That said, there are many valuable business insights in the book, the best of which is the coverage of privacy issues, and the detailed case studies.

For the more technically inclined reader the detailed discussions of data warehousing, data mining and analytical tools and techniques are accurate and up-to-date. I especially liked the focus on data quality, which is a much larger issue than many suspect. I also liked the 12-stage CRM strategy that is given.

Overall, this is an excellent book for IT professionals who need to understand the high level technical issues, as well as the business ramifications of implementing and supporting a CRM system. For IT management and business professionals I prefer "The CRM Handbook" by Jill Dyché, which explains much of the technical material in business terms, and takes a stronger business perspective. However, that reflects my personal preferences and opinion - the bottom line is this book does an excellent job of covering the full spectrum of CRM and does so in easy to understand language.

              Book Description

Over the last thirty years, international political economy and international relations have become increasingly sophisticated, both empirically and theoretically. Realist, liberal, and constructivist theorists have developed research programs that yield new insights into some of the most perplexing areas of international politics: the interplay between conflict and cooperation, the impact of domestic political structures on foreign policy, the role of institutions, and the influence of worldviews and causal beliefs on decision-making. In exploring these developments, this book also considers them from the perspectives of security studies, organization theory, and economics.

This is a republication in book form of a special fiftieth anniversary issue of the journal International Organization.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding collection of essays by top IR/IPE theorists.......2004-08-13

Top-notch collection of essays that stand the test of time. Ranges from economist Barry Eichengreen's "Dental hygiene and nuclear war: how international relations looks from economics,"
to Martha Finnemore and Kathryn Sikkink (of "Activists beyond Borders" fame) on "International norm dynamics and political change", to Robert Jervis' classic overview of "Realism in the study of world politics." Great overview of institutions by Lisa Martin and Beth Simmons. Helen Milner explores the emerging synthesis of international, American and comparative politics (a long overdue synthesis in the field of political science), and Ole Waever explores "The sociology of a not so international discipline: American and European developments in international relations" -- the latter increasingly relevant given the havoc that George Bush has wrought with trans-Atlantic relations post 9-11. Wonderful essays by editors Peter Katzenstein, Robert O. Keohane, and Stephen Krasner, and by James March, Geoffrey Garrett, Miles Kahler, Michael Mastanduno, Johan Olsen, and John Ruggie. A "must" for every IR/IPE scholar.

              Book Description

"The United States, Canada, and Mexico need to modernize our relationship if we want the 21St Century to improve on the past. The three countries of North America already have a larger market than the European Union, but we have not begun to explore our potential as a diverse community. Robert Pastor's book offers a wealth of new ideas and proposals for constructing a North American Community and lifting all of the people of the entire continent"
              --Vicente Fox, President of Mexico.

The Mexican peso crisis struck in late December 1994, coinciding with a new Mexican administration and the end of the first year of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The crisis poignantly highlighted the success and the inadequacy of the treaty-success in the expansion of trade and capital flows, and inadequacy in institutional capacity. The Canadian, Mexican, and US governments defined the agreement so narrowly that they failed to devise a mechanism that could monitor, anticipate, plan, or even respond to such a serious problem. The new president of Mexico, Vicente Fox Quesada, has boldly proposed transforming the free trade area into a common market like Europe's. This has evoked lukewarm responses from the Bush and Chrétien administrations, which have not yet developed ways to cope with the new problems stemming from accelerated social and economic integration or to take advantage of North America's opportunities.

In this visionary study, Robert A. Pastor seizes Fox's idea and maps out the paths toward making it a reality. He analyzes NAFTA's success and shortcomings, extracts lessons from the European Union's 40 years of reducing disparities between rich and poor countries, and proposes ways that NAFTA can adapt and incorporate those lessons. The centerpiece of the book is a detailed proposal and specific recommendations for new institutions and "North American policies," including plans for infrastructure and transportation, immigration and customs, a unified currency, and projects aimed to lift the poorer regions. The author addresses issues of sovereignty and national interest and concludes with a look ahead toward a Free Trade Area of the Americas.

This book is the first of its kind to propose a detailed approach to a North American Community - different from the European Common Market but drawing lessons from its experience. It will be of considerable interest for policymakers in the region as well as researchers and students of international political economy, world trade, and foreign affairs.

1 out of 5 stars This makes me sick!!!.......2006-07-13

I cannot believe what this guy is proposing!! I am going to pass this around as further ammunition that the federal government is not a government for, of, and by the People. The New American Century has only just begun.

But opposition is mounting. Perhaps the most blistering criticism has come from Lou Dobbs of CNN - a frequent critic of Bush's immigration policies.

"A regional prosperity and security program?" he asked rhetorically in a recent cablecast. "This is absolute ignorance. And the fact that we are -- we reported this, we should point out, when it was signed. But, as we watch this thing progress, these working groups are continuing. They're intensifying. What in the world are these people thinking about? You know, I was asked the other day about whether or not I really thought the American people had the stomach to stand up and stop this nonsense, this direction from a group of elites, an absolute contravention of our law, of our Constitution, every national value. And I hope, I pray that I'm right when I said yes. But this is -- I mean, this is beyond belief."

              AMEN.

Recently, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review questioned the unchallenged momentum toward merger.

"Will Americans trade their dead presidents for Ameros?" the newspaper asked in an editorial last month.

The paper chided efforts at replacing the U.S. and Canadian dollars and Mexican peso with "the amero" - a knockoff of the euro - along with the building of "a looming NAFTA-like superstate." Citing the meeting between the three national leaders at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, in March 2005, the editorial warned: "Canadians, Mexicans and Americans who value the sovereignty of their respective countries should be concerned."

The Tribune Review editorial saw synergy between the plans of the national leaders and the ambitious agenda of the Council on Foreign Relations - seen by many as a kind of secretive, shadow government of the elite. The CFR issued a bold report in the spring of 2005, shortly after the joint announcements in Waco by Bush and his counterparts.

"The Council on Foreign Relations published a report in May -- "Building a North American Community" -- calling for, among other things, redefining the borders of the three nations, creating a super-regional governance board and the North American Paramilitary Group to ensure that Congress does not interfere with whatever the trilateral union feels like doing," said the paper. "Must the Bush administration happily sacrifice every shred of American sovereignty for the greater good of the New World Order?"

In fact, the CFR report is a five-year plan for the "establishment by 2010 of a North American economic and security community" with a common "outer security perimeter."

Some see it as the blueprint for merger of the U.S., Canada and Mexico. It calls for "a common economic space ... for all people in the region, a space in which trade, capital and people flow freely."

The CFR's strategy calls specifically for "a more open border for the movement of goods and people." It calls for laying "the groundwork for the freer flow of people within North America." It calls for efforts to "harmonize visa and asylum regulations." It calls for efforts to "harmonize entry screening."

In "Building a North American Community," the report states that Bush, Mexican President Vicente Fox and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin "committed their governments" to this goal March 23, 2005, at that meeting in Waco, Texas.

Alan Burkhart, who describes himself as a free-lance political writer, cross-country trucker "and proud citizen of one of the reddest of the Red States - Mississippi," is another critic seething over these plans that seem to have a life of their own - with little or no real public debate.

"As time passes, American corporations will find it unnecessary to move their facilities out of the country," writes Burkhart. "Our already stagnant wages will be just as low as those of Mexico. The cultures of three great nations will be diluted. Our currency will be replaced with the 'Amero.' And, we'll be one giant step closer to the U.N.'s perverse dream of a one-world government."

Pastor also was vice chairman of the May 2005 Council on Foreign Relations task force entitled "Building a North American Community" that presents itself as a blueprint for using bureaucratic action within the executive branches of Mexico, the U.S. and Canada to transform the current trilateral Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America into a North American union regional government.

THATS RIGHT PEOPLE.. THE GOVERNMENT IS PLANNING THIS AND ISN'T EVEN TELLING US ABOUT IT. APPARENTLY WE ARE NOT WORTH NOTIFYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Traitor to US Sovereignty, Constitution, Supreme Court.......2006-07-13

It may be the biggest story of the 21st century, but few press outlets are telling it. In fact, until very recently, few in the U.S. were aware of the plans and even fewer denouncing what appears to be the implementation of an effort some have characterized as "NAFTA on steroids."

All American people should be very concerned at the prospect of a North American Union - and the end of hope for the free country our Founding Fathers laid before us. We must resist to the bitter end of need be and fight the push bu multinational corporations and elite bankers' push for a new world order combining elements of fascism/corporatism and and end-run around our sovereignty by unsurping the powers of Congress and the American Legal System.

Is President Bush's reluctance to control the border and enforce laws requiring deportation of foreigners who enter the country illegally part of a master plan to all but eliminate borders between the U.S., Canada and Mexico? You bet.

If President Bush's agenda is to establish a new North American union government to supersede the sovereignty of the United States, then the president has an obligation to tell this to the American people directly. The American public has a right to know.

Phyllis Schlafly, the woman best known for nearly single-handedly leading the opposition that killed the Equal Rights Amendment, sees a sinister and sweeping agenda behind the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America.

"Is the real push behind guest-worker proposals the Bush goal to expand NAFTA into the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, which he signed at Waco, Texas, last year and reaffirmed at Cancun, Mexico, this year?" she asks. "Bush is a globalist at heart and wants to carry out his father's oft-repeated ambition of a 'new world order.'"

She accuses the president and others behind the effort of wanting to obliterate U.S. borders in an effort to increase the Mexican population transfer and lower wages for the benefit of U.S. corporate interests.

                Book Description

The starting point of this book is the coexistence of the overlapping regimes of the WTO, the EU and the NAFTA. On this basis it explores the emergence of a nascent Common Law of International Trade. This exploration is rooted in three phenomena: Firstly, the fact that the very same regulatory measure may come simultaneously within the jurisdictional reach of more than one trade regime and may even be adjudicated simultaneously. Some regimes offer alternatives. The NAFTA, for example, offers GATT dispute resolution as an option for many of its own disputes. Secondly, convergence in the material law of the disparate international trade regimes. This, of course, is the heart of the emergent Common Law. Thirdly, the strengthening of private parties in all regimes. Once a preserve of the EU, the NAFTA allows private party dispute resolution of different types in relation to various matters and in the case of the WTO, although it is still an intergovernmental preserve, private actors are learning to manipulate the system. This volume, built on a recent series of courses at the Academy of European Law, is a reflection of this conviction. The various contributions deal with discrete areas in the double sense of the international trading system but each placing considerable emphasis on the interlocking nature of the various components of that system. It is our conviction that this is the appropriate way to understand and to teach this branch of the law.

                  Book Description

In the past fifteen years, the nations of the Western Hemisphere have experienced nothing less than a revolution in the way they trade with their neighbors. In the mid-1980s and early 1990s, several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean began to liberalize their trade and investment regimes and to implement market-oriented reforms aimed at promoting a more open and dynamic pattern of integration into the world economy. Along with North America, Latin America and the Caribbean have negotiated modern trade agreements that go beyond the elimination of tariffs and nontariff barriers in goods to include provisions on services, investment, intellectual property, government procurement, and dispute settlement. They also have entered into deeper and wider forms of integration at the subregional level. A natural but also unprecedented step along the path toward greater economic interdependence in the hemisphere came about when the leaders of the thirty-four democrat! ically elected governments of the region agreed to start working toward the establishment of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) at their First Summit held in Miami in December 1994 and to launch the FTAA negotiations at the Second Summit of the Americas, which took place in Santiago, Chile in April 1998.

This book takes stock of the remarkable progress to date in advancing free trade in the Americas. It examines trade flows within subregional groups and between members of these different arrangements. Contributors describe the main characteristics of the trade arrangements signed between countries of the hemisphere and explore the development of trade rules in these arrangements. Finally, the book details recent advances in the construction of the FTAA.

This is one of the first comprehensive volumes that explains the process of the Free Trade Area of the Americas. Through fifteen chapters, this book offers the reader the necessary tools to understand what is happening and what might happen in the Western Hemisphere from an economic perspective. The structure of the book is highly comprehensive as so are the vast majority of the chapters. Highly recommended!
