    Book Description

This empirically rich volume presents a comparative study of the way that new forms of work are used and becoming institutionalized in various regions in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Using a comparative framework, this new volume focuses on how non-standard employment can be regulated in very different social, political and institutional settings. After surveying these new forms of work and the new demands for labor-market regulation, the authors identify possible solutions among local-level actors and provide a detailed analysis of how firms assess the advantages and disadvantages of flexible forms of employment. The collected authors provide six detailed case studies to examine the successes and failures of experimental approaches and social innovation to these new forms of employment in various regions in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

This book will be of great interest to sociologists, political scientists, industrial relations experts, policy-makers, representativesof the social partners, students of labor studies, and to all those interested in new approaches to employment protection.

      Book Description

The many billions of dollars invested in canal irrigation in recent decades have had disappointing results. Rarely have projected benefits in well-being or production been achieved. In consequence, in the mid-1980s, further vast sums are being spent throughout the Third World on programmes for rehabilitation, canal lining, on farm development, and farmers’ organisation. In this book, Robert Chambers shows that much of this policy and practice is based on misleading research and misdiagnosis. When applied to the complexity and uniqueness of canal irrigation systems, the normal professionalism of civil and agricultural engineers, agronomists, economists, and sociologists, leaves gaps which are keys to better performance. In successive chapters, five such gaps are analysed and presented: main system management, including the scheduling and delivery of water, and communications; canal irrigation at night; management of canal systems jointly by farmers and officials; professional conditions and incentives for irrigation managers; and methods for diagnostic analysis to identify cost-effective actions for improvement. Managing Canal Irrigation has been written for policy-makers, irrigation managers, consultants, researchers, trainers and teachers. It challenges all concerned with improving the performance and anti-poverty impact of canal irrigation, whether in government departments, aid agencies, consultancy firms, training and research institutes or universities, to re-examine their beliefs, biases and actions. By going beyond the limits of normal professionalism, the book presents a new syllabus for training, a new agenda for research and development, and points to new policies and to practical action to be taken in the field.

5 out of 5 stars The authoritive text on canal irrigation in Asian Countries.......2000-04-24

A comprehensive review of political managerial and economic issues of canal irrigation including; impact, managing proffessionals, operational management of schemes. An excellent text, should be read by any proffessionals related to irrigation, however neglects to cover comprehensively life cycle costing, agronomic or drainage management. Although the analysis is in Asia, the text and ideas are transferable globally. Well written, clear text from this excellent author.

      Book Description

Designed for a one-semester introductory course in Animal Behavior. Animal behavior is a broad discipline with investigators and contributions from diverse perspectives, including anthropology, comparative psychology, ecology, ethology, physiology, and zoology. The authors goal in this textbook is to use evolutionary principles as a unifying theme to provide students exposure to a number of approaches to the field of animal behavior. They also demonstrate that the varied perspectives used to study behavior are complementary and often integrated; they are not mutually exclusive. The subtitle, “Mechanisms, Ecology, and Evolution,” reflects the broad themes that dominate the book.

4 out of 5 stars The best of the current texts available.......1999-09-28

I have used this as a text and have found it to be the best available. It is well written and is easily understood by undergraduate students, without talking down to them. Its incorporation of ecology and evolution is particularly important and useful. The examples work well in giving a complete picture. The practical emphasis on how behaviors are studied and measured helps to interest students in research and equip them to evaluate new information.

        Book Description

Studies of animal behavior often assume that all members of a species exhibit the same behavior. Geographic Variation in Behavior shows that, on the contrary, there is substantional variation within species across a wide range of taxa. Including work from pioneers in the field, this volume provides a balanced overview of research on behavioral characteristics that vary geographically. The authors explore the mechanisms by which behavioral differences evolve and examine related methodological issues. Taken together, the work collected here demonstrates that genetically based geographic variation may be far more widespread than previously suspected. The book also shows how variation in behavior can illuminate both behavioral evolution and general evolutionary patterns. Unique among books on behavior in its emphasis on geographic variation, this volume is a valuable new resource for students and researchers in animal behavior and evolutionary biology.

          Book Description

The first book-length exploration of behavioral mechanisms in evolutionary ecology, this ambitious volume illuminates long-standing questions about cause-and-effect relations between an animal's behavior and its environment. By focusing on biological mechanisms—the sum of an animal's cognitive, neural, developmental, and hormonal processes—leading researchers demonstrate how the integrated study of animal physiology, cognitive processes, and social interaction can yield an enriched understanding of behavior.

With studies of species ranging from insects to primates, the contributors examine how various animals identify and use environmental resources and deal with ecological constraints, as well as the roles of learning, communication, and cognitive aspects of social interaction in behavioral evolution. Taken together, the chapters demonstrate how the study of internal mechanistic foundations of behavior in relation to their ecological and evolutionary contexts and outcomes provides valuable insight into such behaviors as predation, mating, and dispersal.

Behavioral Mechanisms in Evolutionary Ecology shows how a mechanistic approach unites various levels of biological organization to provide a broader understanding of the biological bases of behavioral evolution.

5 out of 5 stars Terriffic book- 5 plus stars!.......2006-01-06

Drawing from so many experts in the field and publishing their original material makes for a great work. Of the dozen or so handicapping volumes I have, this is the one I refer to most often because every each aspect from handicapping factors to money management and tote watching is covered by a true expert in that field. What I discovered after reading this is that I started looking for volumes by the writers herein that contributed chapters of interest. It has introduced me to a lot of guys I would never have found without this book.

5 out of 5 stars Add this one to your library.......2005-08-24

I have read the first edition of this title over and over and the latest version is only an improvement on a fine work. I agree that a lot of the information provided in the chapters in not in great depth, but it's difficult to take a 200 page book and condense it into a few pages. Quinn has done a great job of doing just that. And since the author provides information on the various sources, it gives the reader the opportunity to reach out to those sources if they have interest in the topic. This is definitely a great addition to any handicapper's library. I have had the opportunity to meet Quinn and he is just as wonderful a person as he is an author.

5 out of 5 stars Break out of your handicapping ruts!.......2005-02-24

The beauty of James Quinn's updated anthology is not any one revelation that he brings to the table, but that he's synthesized so many voices and give you so many more angles to consider. Those of you who play regularly know how easy it is to identify the obvious chalk-- and how hard it is to get past the two or three "best on paper" types to get to live, mid-priced overlays. You know, the horses that are the difference between a minus day and a wildly profitable day.

In addition, the fact that he has brought so many voices together on money management-- the topic I see the least amount of literature on-- alone makes this worthwhile.

This isn't the type of book I'd toss to a novice, but it will make the intermediate player much more flexible and creative.

                5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for the novice handicapper.......2004-08-25

This book is an almost encylocpedic digest of current theories of thoroughbred handicapping. None are covered in such detail that you can run off and start making money at the track, but each points you to a source for more comprehensive information on the theory that interests you.

If you are willing to ignore books on "handicapping made easy," this book is probably among the best starting points for the novice. It explores a variety of approaches, leaving you to select what you like, and follow a path toward mastery.

Then, the detailed reference sections will keep you coming back time and again. This book will help you make the leap from accomplished user to bona fide Windows hero. Finally, a hardcore Windows book that digs into the XP interface while not putting the reader to sleep! Lively and written for Windows mechanics who live for more power. Learn how to create and deploy tools to manage your computers and networks. Here you'll find a straightforward introduction to scripting with VBScript, coverage of dozens of powerful programming and management objects, and from-the-trenches advice on distributing and managing your new toolkit. Learn how to master the Command Line. Many books cover Windows Script Host, but none of the others address the powerful and still-useful batch file language and command-line utilities. Clear, practical examples show how each scripting object, batch file or command line utility can change lives, make the dog behave, and eliminate bad hair days. Although Microsoft provides the tools, users are hard pressed to find much-if any-documentation on these tools. Rather than learning by osmosis, we suggest that you pick up a copy of this indispensable book.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-01-22

As a Windows author myself I tend to be very demanding when I look for books about the Windows operating system. I was overly pleased with both the book's content and presentation. This book never even found my bookshelf. It has a permanent home on my desk.

5 out of 5 stars Great Technical Writer.......2005-08-10

Brian Knittel gets an A+ from me for being one of the most lucid technical writers I've ever read. I'm a social worker by day and a hobbyist at night who likes to tinker with the command-line. I have found the book easy to understand. Chapters are well laid out with ample reference sections. kudos!

                4 out of 5 stars delivers.......2004-08-21

This book opened my eyes as to the command line power that Windows actually has. Unix user may turn up their noses but even they have to admit WSH is pretty cool and smashes some of the traditional stereotypes about Windows only being for the technically challenged. The book does a good job of preparing you to start scripting in an MS environment.

5 out of 5 stars Worth every cent you are going to spend.......2004-03-12

This book is perfect overview of VBScript and Scripting Windows XP. Author explains every aspect of Scripting without going into too much of details. Beginners will probably need additional info. But if you ask me nobody could do better job explaining of so many topics in one book. There are plenty examples you could use right away on the PC.
                Thumbs up!!!

3 out of 5 stars OK - But there are much better options.......2004-02-27

                1. I find the organization of the book fairly difficult to follow. It just doesn't flow for me (can't figure out why the topics are organized as they are). Clearly this is a personal preference thing - but the following books all felt more clearly organized to me:

                Microsoft Windows 2000 Scripting Guide
Managing Enterprise Systems with the Windows Script Host
                Windows 2000 Scripting Bible

                2. There's a lot of text, but not that much concrete/applicable information. I like books that teach by doing - lots of short/sweet examples to illustrate the points. This book seems to have repurposed a great deal of MSDN documentation to describe the detail of functions and objects, but isn't really laid out as a reference. It feels like an unhappy marriage of reference book and how-to.

                3. There are a number of frighteningly basic/obvious errors in the book - which pretty much ruin the credibility of the author. Just a few examples:

3a. COM is defined as Common Object Model (it's Component Object Model)
3b. CIM is defined as Common Interface Model (it's Common Information Model)
3c. Knittel says all CIMv2 objects start with Win32_ (clearly not the case)

                4. There's very little on WMI (Knittel himself says "...this chapter gives the barest introduction to WMI".

                5. Knittel's command-line section doesn't address WMIC at all, which is inarguably the MOST powerful command-line tool introduced in Windows XP.

It's not terrible or totally wrong, I just don't think it's as approachable, as deep, or as credible as the books mentioned above.
