Book Description
William G. Martin's Semiperipheral States in the World-Economy diverges sharply from past international labor division interpretations of semiperipheral development. Martin emphasizes the importance of each country's individual conditions. Linking each example, however, is the theory that there is a relatively rare set of conditions that make economic, political, and social advancement of the semiperipheral states successful or even possible. Martin and the contributing writers present the thesis that mobility of semiperipheral states to the "core" world-economy is a very rare phenomenon. Indeed, they even go so far as to suggest that it is the very set of social and institutional ruptures that were necessary to achieve semiperipheral status which often create the social and political forces that prevent any further advance. Economic pressure from core nations and intense competition within the semiperiphery are cited as being foremost among these factors. Such general topics occupy the first few chapters of the book, while the later chapters examine specific semiperipheral countries in depth. The final interpretation provides a better understanding of this segment of the world-economy and of the transformational possibilities of the capitalist world itself. Students of both world-economy and the social and political conditions of the semiperiphery will find this an invaluable study.

"This Isn't the Company I Joined": How to Lead in a Business Turned Upside Down
ASIN: 0471292621 |
Book Description
"This Isn't the Company I Joined" Seven Steps to Energizing a Restructured Work Force Carol Kinsey Goman "What Really Happens When Your Company Reorganizes
And How to Fix It! The big change is over. Employees feel secure, management is seen as caring and aware, the boardroom is viewed as credible and inspired, and the "big change" has been a resounding success. And if you really believe this, you badly need this book! More likely, the work force is confused and demoralized and managers have the uneasy feeling that something is terribly wrong. But all is not lost, thanks to the outspoken analysis and real-life solutions found in this look at the human side of change. Advance Praise for "This Isn't the Company I Joined" "Goman has captured the key elements that we are facing world. Those who keep up will do very well and others, I'm afraid, will be passed over." Charles Lynch, Chairman, fresh Choice Inc. "This is a book for people who have arrived as well as those just starting. Carol Kinsey Goman has written a `must read' for anyone involved in leadership." Robert L. Dilenschneider, CEO, The Dilenschneider Group "This is an outstanding book on the topic of managing corporate change. This book provides a compelling rationale for capturing the hearts and souls, in additions to the minds, of employees. And I agree this is the single biggest factor for business in today's fast paced, always changing, competitive market." Karen L. Hendricks, Chairman, President & CEO, Baldwin Piano & Organ Company "Change's best friend is this book. Carol Kinsey Goman has produced a highly enjoyable and informative book about organizational change, loyalty, and the challenges of transformation." Lee Hornick, Program Director, The Conference Board "Having recently gone through a fairly sizable restructuring ourselves, I read with a great deal of interest Goman's steps to energizing a restructured work force. For any organization facing the kind of challenges we do, her approach to creating a `change-adept' employee base is well thought out, completely practical, and well supported by examples of its successful implementation." Vasu R. Devan, Chairman and CEO, MECON, Inc.
Customer Reviews:
Upside is exciting.......2004-02-29
Employee Motivation is a FRAGILE art!
How's that for insight.
Include employees in the strategy development process!
Another gem.
This book makes for interesting reading at Starbucks
but is no where near corporate reality!
In the down economy since 1999 employees have been abused
and taken for granted only to have more demands on them
and less salary/bonuses/stock options available.
The majority of salary adjustments DO NOT even keep up with
the cost of living.
Energizing employees and engaging their enthusiasm.......2001-02-06
"This book points out the seven steps leaders can take in an effort to energize a restructured work force. They will need to learn new management strategies based on ideas about human resources that may never have occurred to them before. They will have to abandon the old corporate paradigms and accept the fact that business today is a whole new kind of ball game. And above all, they will have to find means to bring the work force as individuals, as human beings, back to the center of corporate strategy-because corporate survival in this chaotic, ever-changing, new business world of ours is going to rely crucially on the commitment, enthusiasm, talent, and creative contributions of every single employee from top to bottom of the organization" (from the Introduction).
In this context, throughout the book Carol Kinsey Goman examines these seven steps in detail, and summarizes them and their basic principles as following:
1. Examine changing realities
* Communicate to employees the forces of change affecting markets, competition, and their jobs.
* Acknowledge the changes in needs and values of the work force.
2. Adopt the new business paradigm
* Identify the changing paradigm for science and organizations.
* Exploit instability as the opportunity for positive transformation.
3. Develop a change-adept work force
* Expand employees' skills to help them thrive on change instead of fearing it.
* Develop management practices that promote change-adeptness throughout the organization.
4. Lead discontinuous change
* Be prepared not just to manage but to lead transformation.
* Build emotional literacy in yourself and in your work force.
5. Develop the core of leadership
* Become the change you want to see in others: Lead by example.
* Transform yourself from manager to leader.
6. Renegotiate the compact between employers and employees
* Recognize the powerful potential of shared commitment.
* Move from paternalizm to partnership.
7. Liberate work force potential
* Eliminate obstacles to creative collaboration.
* Rely on human potential as central to your corporate strategy.
Finally, she writes that "With one exception, success in today's global economy boils down to the single, universally recognized issue of getting more for less. The exception is human resources. The potential of an organization lies within each individual and within the connections between individuals. Human labor is no longer a disposable commodity. It is a unique creative resource for the future of the organization. You can trim production costs, speed up communications, reduce delivery times, cut corners on marketing and promotion...But you can't switch workers off and expect to come out ahead. If you give people less, they give less back. If you treat them like underlings, they behave like underlings. Offer them more, on the other hand, and they'll repay you with interest. I'm not talking about money now. I'm talking about liberating untapped potential, about energizing employees and engaging their enthusiasm."
Highly recommended.
But this is the book I needed.......2000-01-13
Literally peppered with case histories, this book is practical. It helps provide management with examples that make a case, using many companies they will recognize. While so much data is conceptual or theoretical, this is a nuts and bolts primer on organizational improvement. Informative and loaded with common sense.

Too much reliance on microscopic detail.......2006-09-13
I bought this book to identify mosses found in Maine when on vacation from Europe. I had a magnifying glass at my disposal (10x, 20x) but found that the keys started asking questions about microscopic details very early on. This made it (too) difficult to get at least to the right family. Liverworts worked better than mosses.

Right Blood, Wrong Book.......2002-04-10
I don't know who this book was written for. Racing fans? Sociology professors? Migrant workers? There are many good books about racing that have recently been published. This is not one of them. The book actually has very little to do with racing. It is an indictment of American industrialists. The premise is that very rich families engaged in dubious practices to get and stay rich. Sound interesting? It's not. At least not here.
Definately not "an engaging look behind the scenes".......2001-10-03
Save your time and money. Unlike her first book about horse racing ("Down the Backstretch", which is a passable sociological picture of the horse racing business), this one is mostly a pedantic recitation of mind-numbing, frequently-repeated details. It has all the charm and style of a statistics text.

Secretariat: The Making of a Champion

Customer Reviews:
Secretariat first, the rest nowhere.......2003-09-28
A brief and probably pointless quiz: Who is the horse described in the following paragraph?
He was a physically awesome Thoroughbred and a superb broodmare sire. When he was born at ten minutes after midnight, March 30, 1970, his owner took one look at him and said, "There is a whopper." His own firstborn was an Appaloosa colt named 'First Secretary'. Another son - a draft horse cross - is still alive and well and recently retired from the Southwest dressage circuit. Yet a third son won the Belmont by a margin of 21 lengths, in what was the second fastest running and third largest margin in history.
Of course, his Daddy still holds the record for both margin and time.
And who is Risen Star's Daddy?
Secretariat, of course. No one who admires this special breed of horse could possibly have flunked this quiz.
When we watched Big Red hit the wire 31 lengths ahead of Twice a Prince in 1973, crushing the Belmont stakes record by two seconds and change, many of us knew that we would not see his like again. According to his jockey, Ron Turcotte, Secretariat was retired before he had reached his full potential at the longer distances. We would have loved to watch that big red horse run all day and smash every record there was, but it was not to be.
At any rate, reading William Nack's book is the next best thing to watching him run (unless you are lucky enough and rich enough to own one of his 'blue hen' daughters). At least his fans can relive the races Big Red did run, and Nack has the knack (sorry) of bringing them vividly back to memory. This book and "Wild Ride: The Rise and Tragic Fall of Calumet Farm, Inc., America's Premier Racing Dynasty" by Ann Hagedorn Auerbach are my two favorite reads on all aspects of the Thoroughbred racing industry in the United States. "Secretariat" reflects the brilliance of the Thoroughbred and its human interface. "Wild Ride" reflects the dark side of that same relationship.
My only complaint regarding Nack's treatment of Secretariat is that although it starts in the right place (the birth of Somethingroyal's whopping, chestnut foal), it didn't extend much beyond Big Red's last race. I would have liked to follow him through at least part of his career at stud.
However, that might be asking too much of a book that was published only two years after this great Thoroughbred retired from the track.
At the beginning of the new millennium, Man O'War was voted 'Thoroughbred of the Century' by a panel that was assembled by 'Blood Horse' Magazine. But those of us who saw Secretariat win the Belmont will remember him as first, and (as they said about one of his most famous ancestors) the rest nowhere.
Like a Tremendous Machine..........2003-06-05
As the Belmont Stakes approaches and another 3 y.o. has the chance to win the race and with it capture the Triple Crown, I thought it would be interesting to refresh my memory and read about Secretariat, the winner of the Belmont and the Triple Crown of 1973.
William Nack, who wrote BIG RED OF MEADOW STABLE in 1975, provides the reader with some of the most descriptive and awe-inspiring writing about horse racing and what it felt like to ride what many consider the best race horse who ever lived.
He tells the story of breeding Bold Ruler to Somethingroyal and a perchance coin-flip that gave ownership rights to Penny Tweedy who later syndicated Secretariat for over $6 million while he was still an actively racing 3 y.o. Nack tells the history of this super horse, describing the training methods of Lucien Lauren and his relationship with jockey Ron Turcotte, as well as the race-time strategy, anxiety, hopes and dreams as Secretariat grew from a green 2 y.o. colt to a strapping superstar.
As well written as this book is, what makes it special and distinguishes it from most others, is the descriptions of the races themselves. Nack takes the reader along for the ride in all of Secretariat's races leading up to and including the three races of the Triple Crown. His ability to put the reader in the irons, especially at the Belmont when Turcotte glances back during the stretch run to see the field an eventual 31 lengths behind and realizes he's aboard a horse running as the track announcer described "like a tremendous machine", is very powerful.
If you are interested in horse racing or just enjoy reading about the evolution of greatness, I think you will be satisfied with this highly recommended classic.
secretariat.......2002-04-09
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the legend of Secretariat or to those who love thoroughbred racing. This is a truly marvelous account of Big Red - I could not put it down! Mr. Nack's passion for the subject is obvious throughout and the story is narrated in beautiful prose. The account of the Belmont is breathtaking and very emotional. I cannot say enough good things about this book.
Big Red of Meadow Stable: Secretariat, the Making of a Champ.......2001-12-29
This book reads like a fairy tale. If you love horses, this is a must read. William Nack did an excellent job writing about this great racehorse. Unless you read this book, you can't really appreciate the accomplishments of this wonder horse. I read the chapter 3 times about the Belmont Stakes - and cried all 3 times when I read it! This book is moving, emotional, powerful, unforgettable, and it made me fall in love with Secretariat.
history of secretariat.......1997-06-27
in the original edition the pictures are wonderful. it is a very moving book and anyone who loved secretariat-this book will bring you hours of enjoyment.
the book starts before secretariat was born and finishes when he arrived at claiborne to go into stud. all of his races are discussed in detail with loads of pictures from his triple crown. I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!

Book Description
"Secretariat is an elegantly crafted, exhilarating tale of speed and power, grace and greatness, told with such immediacy that the reader is lost in the rush of horses and the clatter and ring of the grandstand." --Laura Hillenbrand, author of Seabiscuit.
In 1973, Secretariat, the greatest thoroughbred in horse-racing history, won the Triple Crown. The only horse to ever break the two-minute mark in winning the Kentucky Derby until last year's winner Monarchos, Secretariat also pulled off one of the most astounding victories in the annals of horse racing by winning the Belmont Stakes by a record-breaking thirty-one lengths. Now William Nack updates his acclaimed portrait with a new afterword that examines the legacy of one of ESPN's "100 Greatest Athletes of the Century," and the only horse to ever grace the covers of Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated all in the same week.

The Heart Of A Titan.......2007-02-25
Ask anyone in the Thoroughbred industry who is 40-ish what was a major factor in getting into the game and I wager one response will be watching Big Red in 1972 and 1973.
Secretariat dominated the sport and captured the oftentimes fleeting attention of American pop culture in his memorable Triple Crown performances and beyond. To show his staying power, there are still hats, T-shirts, mugs, beanie dolls, bobbleheads and other souvenirs that celebrate his iconic career.
Author William Nack presents a truly insider's account of Secretariat through unprecedented access to the team around the racer. The reader rides the unique pace in the barn area, the highs & lows in training & racing and gets a better understanding to the controversial decision to retire Big Red after his three year old season.
The current edition includes a moving tribute to Big Red that initially appeared in Sports Illustrated. Secretariat was euthanized due to complications from laminitis, the malady that ultimately doomed Barbaro.
Secretariat was a larger than life athlete and Nack captures the nuances of what it took to become a champion.
Best I've Read.......2007-02-04
William Nack's book, Secretariat: The Making of A Champion, is the most wonderful, best written, book I've ever read! If you're a horse lover like I am, and if Secretariat is still your "hero", you will love this book. Once you get started reading, you'll find it hard to put down.
I'm an avid reader of non-fiction and this is the only book I've read twice from cover to cover. Somehow I lost the copy I read in 2003 and I had to read it again. I'm so glad I did. I think I enjoyed it even more the second time.
Mr.Nack puts you on Big Red's back throughout every race. You can hear the applause and screams from the grandstands. You can feel the power of that magnificient horse Ron Turcotte felt while in the saddle. You can almost hear his hoof beats on the track and on the turf.
Mr. Nack brings it all alive for you in his pages. He managed to bring Secretariat alive for me once more. My thanks to Mr.Nack for writing such a wonderful book about the horse I loved so much and that I still love today.
Secretariat the Overrated.......2006-12-26
A major, and I mean MAJOR, problem with this book is that there is NO INDEX! Who ever heard of a non-fiction book like this without an index? If you want to find anything, it's impossible. And the chapter heads aren't any help either.
Nack includes a lot of material that I was not interested in. When I bought and read this book, I thought Secretariat was the be-all and end-all of horseracing, and I didn't care to learn all about his background and all about every person who had ever come in contact with him.
There are very few photos, at least in my paperback edition, and these are in black and white, denying me a view of Secretariat's beautiful chestnut coat.
Secretariat, when he was three, had 12 starts, but won only 9, came in second twice, and third, once. He lost 3 races--STAKES races, to average horses. Not exactly a great record. Lots of horses have had better sophomore years. Once he was overtaken in the stretch by another horse, and another time he couldn't catch the leader in the stretch. He was known to run poorly on off=tracks. He was fortunate that all of the Triple Crown races were run on fast tracks. If one had been sloppy--who knows?
Secretariat's immortality is based on three things:
1) His incredible Belmont, a fantastic feat that no one can take away from him. However, his only real competition, Sham, dropped out early, so he was in essence simply running against the clock.
2) The fact that he was the first horse in 25 years to win the Triple Crown. He broke the jinx that had prevented several excellent horses before him from turning horseracing's hat trick.
3) He was a gorgeous-looking horse. How important that is in the TV age! If you watch TV, how often do you see ugly or plain people?
Citation, the previous winner of the Triple Crown in 1948, had 20 starts, with 19 wins and one second (in a stakes TRIAL, with a new rider, Eddie Arcaro, who took full blame for the loss). In the Derby, on a muddy track, he ran down Coaltown, one of the 100 best horses of the century, to win by 3. In the Preakness, again on a muddy track, he won by 5. In the Belmont, on a fast track, he was in first place wire to wire, winning easily by 8 lengths. Then, he won the Sysonby Mile against the best older sprinters in the land. THREE DAYS LATER, he raced in the Jockey Club Gold Cup when it was two miles, beat the best stayers in the country, including Phalanx, the 1947 Belmont winner, by 7 lengths. Then, 2 weeks later, he ran in the 1-5/8 mile Empire City cup in Yonkers and won again, beating older horses. He finished his year by winning two races in California!
Secretariat never did anything in his career to even come close to what Citation did. Yet people deify Secretariat and totally ignore Citation. I hope to rectify this soon by honoring Citation with his own website. Look for it!
Secretariat - The ONE True Champion.......2006-12-23
As a lover of horse racing, you can't help but love Secretariat as well. Secretariat: The Making of a Champion is an excellent read for horse racing lovers everywhere. You learn so much about what went on behind the scenes and how great of a horse Secretariat really was. William Nack provides an excellent narrative from the day Secretariat was foaled by Somthingroyal to the day of his last race.
If you love horse racing and Secretariat, there is no better book than this. You learn about the life of Penny Chenery to the life of this great red horse. You can see every stride he takes as he wins the Belmont by 31 lengths. An absolutely amazing book with great detail and insight.

Book Description
The first complete resource on an ever-growing field, updated and expanded to reflect the impact of the New Economy on the industry
This unique A-to-Z resource provides a complete game plan for novice management consultants trying to break into the business along with expert guidelines for veterans looking to expand their services. Sugata Biswas and Daryl Twitchell cover all the bases, from the origins and history of the field to how to zero in on becoming established in one of the many unique specialties within the industry. They also provide a detailed directory of the top fifty consulting firms in the nation. This Second Edition features new and/or added information on such critical topics as the rapidly emerging field of e-consulting; consulting start-ups, incubators, and other New Economy enterprises; and an exploration of how increased competition for graduating MBAs is changing the consultant recruiting and hiring process.
Sugata Biswas (Santa Monica, CA) is a management consultant with the Viant Corporation. Daryl Twitchell (New York, NY) is a management consultant with Front Line Capital Corporation.

If only we could put the tree back in the forest..........2007-10-05
This book is dedicated to general job seeking and interviewing techniques applicable to any employment situation. The chapter on consulting models and case questions is decent, but the remaining 200+ pages are irrelevant drivel that sheds little light on the inside machinations of a consulting firm, consulting positions, duties, expectations, and daily life. After spending a couple of hours reading this book, I feel no more prepared to approach leading firms for interviews than before I picked this title up.
great book, especially the cases..........2007-04-01
great little book this one. provides a definitive overview of the consulting industry. it is not biased in any way - so it highlights the pitfalls of the profession, as well as its perks. i think the best part is probably the case frameworks and the 100 sample cases. it has the 10 different types of cases you could expect, and then provides a worked answer in dialogue format - which makes it particularly helpful if you want to practice cases with a friend. all in all, a great guide - thoroughly recommended.
Exellent Book.......2002-02-16
Excellent as a textbook. I use it to teach a university-level management consulting class. Many of the relevant topics covered provide a very good basis for in-class discussion. It is well written and insightful, presenting an accurate portrayal of what it is to be a management consultant. I especially like the sections scripted by industry veterans. I recommend this book to anyone interested in or considering a career in management consulting.
useful.......2001-10-28
This is a useful guide, though can be a bit simplistic at times. Still, it is worth reading, particularly if you are very new to the industry. Also recommended for consulting careers are the Vault Guide to the Case Interview and the Vault Guide to the Top 50 Consulting Firms.
The Best Consulting Guidebook Out There!.......2001-10-01
I love this book. It is full of useful information that is highly relevant to the needs of someone looking to enter consulting and preparing for case interviews. Why would anyone buy Vault or Wetfeet, when they require you to buy multiple books to get the same information that this ONE book has? Also, the people who gave this book bad reviews obviously can't read. The guy from Scandinavia implies that these authors invented case interviews and are selling them as a good way to pick consultants - Wrong! Case interviews have been around forever, and these authors are trying to teach you how to deal with them (they didn't invent them!). The guy from Carlsbad, CA also mis-read this book by saying that these authors invented case questions. IGNORE their bad reviews - they obviously don't read properly. Buy this book for it's meaty content and easy-to-read style.

The Elements of Dynamic Symmetry.......2006-07-01
For those who need to understand Industrial Design, its aesthetics, symmetry and creativity operations is one of the classic books. If an industrial designer believes that, before any project, it is necessary to build a structural grid, and a "philosophical" geometric principle, The Elements of Dynamic Symmetry, by Jay Hambidge, is one of those books.
by Prof. Luiz Vidal Gomes, PhD, Brazilian industrial designer.
Excellent.......2004-06-23
This book opened my eyes to what is fully possible in painting.
A bit arcane, but very useful for artists and designers!.......1999-02-07
Hambidge writes about design principles found in nature which can be applied to the work of the artist and designer. Since the time of the ancient Egyptians, these compositional techniques have been used to give proportion, symmetry, and beauty to buildings, sculpture, paintings, etc. Because of their complexity and rigor, the principles are no longer taught widely, but they are useful for any artist or designer interested in making compositions which appeal to humans' unconscious sense of proportion. The book is old, and a little difficult to understand, but Dover has reproduced it well.
