5 out of 5 stars The Six New Logic Principles and the Star Model........2001-01-26

"When we look around the business landscape, we see many giant corporations that were once very successful-General Motors, Westinghouse, IBM, Kmart, Digital, and Sears-trying to regain their glory days. At the same time, we see much younger corporations such as Compaq, Wal-Mart, Intel, and Microsoft competing with them and thriving. How did these successful giants of the 1960s and 1970s end up with major competitiveness problems in the 1980s and 1990s? The answer is both simple and extraordinarily complex. These once very successful corporations remained good at operating well-managed, bottom-line-oriented hierarchies, and as a result they continued to make small improvements in performance. Their fiercest competitors, on the other hand-often other U.S. companies-were, and still are, redefining the rules for business success and achieving dramatic improvements in their performance. Until recently, many of these formerly very successful companies have stubbornly clung to the old ways of doing things and refused to accept that a new era of management thinking what I call the 'new logic' of organizing-is beginning. As a result, the IBMs, Westinghouses, and Sears Roebucks of the world are behind in the race to reinvent themselves and the way they are managed" (from the Introduction).

In this context, Edward E. Lawler III firstly outlines and contrasts the most important assumptions and elements of both the traditional logic and the new logic appproach as following:

I- The Six Old Logic Principles:

    1. Organization is a secondary source of competitive advantage.

    2. Bureaucracy is the most effective source of control.

    3. Top management and technical experts should add most of the value.

    4. Hierarchical processes are the key to organizational effectiveness.

    5. Organizations should be designed around functions.

    6. Effective managers are the key to organizational effectiveness.

II- The Six New Logic Principles:

    1. Organization can be the ultimate competitive advantage.

    2. Involvement is the most effective source of control.

    3. All employees must add significant value.

    4. Lateral processes are the key to organizational effectiveness.

    5. Organizations should be designed around products and customers.

    6. Effective leadership is the key to organizational effectiveness.

Then, after introducing a new way of organizing and managing based on the new logic principles, he focuses on applying the six principles to the organizational elements in order to create a high-performance organization within the context of the Star Model-it has a pentagonal shape with a five-pointed star inside. It depicts the key features of an organization: strategy, structure, rewards, processes, and people.

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended reading for all corporate managers........2000-04-06

From The Ground Up: Six Principles For Building The New Logic Corporation offers an approach for corporate development that is designed around job functions and departments as it focuses on management rather than leadership. Author Edward Lawler presents the "new logic" in six easy-to-understand principles for organizational redesign and a hands-on plan for putting them in place. Lawler draws upon real-world examples from Motorola, Home Depot, #M, and WalMart to illustrate how these new logical principles can affect positive change in streamlining company processes, improving customer service, boosting employee morale, tackling time-to-market issues, defining business strategies, and outlining mission statements. From The Ground Up is highly recommended reading for corporate managers at all levels of responsibility in today's highly competitive and global marketplace.

5 out of 5 stars A great book with keys that work!.......2003-01-22

This is an excellent book that belongs on the self of anyone who wants to be considered up-to-speed on the critters that dwell in our waters. I've had the opportunity to use the annelid and the tardigrade keys thus far, and both worked wonderfully. The general information for all of the groups is well written and up-to-date, and the addition of color plates is a nice touch. Highly recommended!

          Book Description

A Tale to Tell is divided into three volumes each containing 35 sayings of a narrative nature. They are selected for their popularity as well as their symbolism and vividness. Most of these sayings originated from the pre-Qin era (770-221 BC). This era of about five and half centuries is divided into two periods: Chunqiu (770-476 BC) and Warring State (475-221 BC). These two periods saw the flourishing of Chinese learning at a level unsurpassed in later times, in which practical experience combined with wisdom produced many profound works. These Chinese sayings from these two periods are the crystallization of such thoughts and ideas. From the Qin Dynasty to the present is a period of over two thousand years which enriched the language with many sayings. However, sayings from the pre-Qin era remain the most popular and influential and are still taught to every schoolchild. The order of the sayings is arranged according to the number of stroke in the first character. The meaning of each word in a saying is provided along with the literal English translation. The idiomatic meaning and English equivalents are provided where applicable. To help the readers to pronounce the sayings accurately, two sets of transcription are provided: Hanyu Pinyin for modern standard Chinese and the Yale systems for Cantonese. 5 out of 5 stars A GREAT READ.......2006-04-29

THIS IS A BUNCH OF SHORT STORIES AND INSIGHTS FROM MORE THAN 60 PLAYERS FROM THE 1940'S THRU THE 1960'S. SOME PLAYERS INCLUDE RALPH KINER, FRANK MALZONE, BOB SHAW AND BOBBY THOMSON. EACH PLAYER IS GIVEN 3-4 PAGES OF INTERSTING AND ENTERTAINING STORIES. THIS AN EASY BOOK TO READ BUT VERY VERY ENJOYABLE. WE MORE AND MORE TALES FROM BASEBALL'S GOLDEN ERA. A MUST READ FOR NOSTALGIC FANS.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting stories.......2001-01-25

In this book, forty or fifty ball players are described and then each of them talk about players they have played against. Several umpires also tell of different events in some of their ballgames. It's very interesting to read of their thoughts about some of the better ball players.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading!.......2000-08-08

Between 1940 and 1959 players like Musial, Aaron, Mantle, Mays, Spahn and Banks were just a few of the men to play baseball during what baseball purest call the "Golden Age of Baseball". Gene Fehler has put together a collection of 56 players from the era and the stories they tell bring to life the true world of baseball.

262 pages may seem short and believe me there could have so much more, but what the author does within those pages is pure magic. Reading about what is was like to play along side the greats to winning World Series to having Joe DiMaggio spike you are but a few of the tales in this book.

Baseball comes to life and the players live again as Fehler has collected stories about what is was like to face Musial and Williams, how to avoid Mantle's bat and so many other great ones. As a true baseball fan, I found this book both entertaining and a delight to read and read again.

If you looking for a baseball book that gives the dirt on players this book is certainly not the one, but if you are looking for several hours of fun and enlightening then you can stop at your nearest book store and get yourself a copy.

Fun under $20.00 Sports Publishing has given you a real winner - enjoy the reading!

5 out of 5 stars Perspective of The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy (Third Edition).......2007-10-10

The Source: A Guidebook Of American Genealogy (Third Edition) If you are at all seriously interested in doing genealogical or family history research, this book should be in your library - and should definitely not sit on the shelf. I've been studying, learning about and doing this kind of research for seven years and in that period have read countless books, watched lots of videos, worked through many tutorials and spent hours and hours looking for my ancestral and family connections. I have found The Source to be absolutely the best repository of information about where to find the sources, how to do the work, and - especially - how to use the Internet in this work. Chapters are written by experts in the areas covered, the material is well written and the editors have done an outstanding job of putting it all together in a way that makes sense and flows. There is so much wisdom and information here I find myself taking notes as I read. Absolutely great! A "must have" for serious genealogists - and for anyone really wanting to learn how to find the people in their families who have gone before and left a legacy that helps define who we are.

                  5 out of 5 stars Genealogy.......2007-05-24

This book is an excellent source for genealogical investigation.

My only complaint is that it arrived slightly damaged (a crushed front cover corner).

                  5 out of 5 stars A very useful book.......2006-07-13

This is a very good book. It has more information on more subjects and record sources than any other book I know. It is generally very easy to understand and apply, but I found, when I used it to teach a correspondence class on American research, that it was a bit overwhelming for the beginning student. It is expensive, but its contents justify its price, and everyone who takes American genealogical research seriously should own this book.

5 out of 5 stars URGENT! **SHOP AROUND FOR PRICE!**.......2006-07-03

I got this book from a reseller, A1, via B&Ns site, for about 35 bucks. NO 'sourcing fee'. 4 bucks shipping. There's no excuse for the price gouging from whomever is selling this via Amazon. Hope you get to see this review! I searched on google with 'The Source, szucs, third' for the edition. I love Amazon but this time they didn't get the best price.

5 out of 5 stars One "Source" for all.......2006-07-03

The Source (3rd Ed.), a reference book for individuals as well as research collections, provides huge amounts of materials for amateur as well as professional genealogists. In fact, in and of itself, it gives a history of the people who were and are "America."

And, when one is not using it, The Source makes a great bookend!
