Book Description
Gerald Brock develops a new theory of decentralized public decisionmaking and uses it to clarify the dramatic changes that have transformed the telecommunication industry from a heavily regulated monopoly to a set of market-oriented firms. He demonstrates how the decentralized decisionmaking process--whose apparent element of chaos has so often invited criticism--has actually made the United States a world leader in reforming telecommunication policy.
Customer Reviews:
Telecommunications Regulation - history, theory, & practice.......2001-01-22
First, note that the rapid change of telecommunications technology and regulations makes it virtually impossible to keep a book fully up-to-date. Brock's book brings us up to 1994, and there have been significant changes since then. This immediately noticeable shortcoming is true with every book in this field, so we will not address it further.
Brock paints a very readable and generally clear idea of telecommunications regulation, starting with a few chapters on theory. The philosophical underpinnings of regulation are of some interest, but we know that regulators do not study philosophy before making decisions. The concept that the U.S. system is set up so that there are many "regulators" often acting at cross purposes is an amazing one, given the incredible success of telecommunications in the U.S. The idea that such a successful system could appear so chaotic is worth noting, and Brock is the first author I have seen that praises the current system.
Brock's presentation of history to about 1980 is just wonderful. You will gain a real feeling for why the U.S. system operates the way it does.
Information after 1980 is not presented as clearly. In part, I think this is because Brock personally remembers what happened then, and has difficulty editing out the less significant events of that period.
Overall, the reader is advised to develop a timeline of events to reduce confusion. Brock should include one, but does not.
Brock also addresses in a very limited fashion how things should work with data traffic greater than voice traffic. It was easier to get away with that in 1994 when data traffic was still much less than voice traffic, but impossible to avoid seven years later in 2001.
With all that said, there is no book that presents this information more clearly. It just needs some editing of events from 1980 to 1994, an update into the 21st century, a timeline, and more consideration of regulations for data traffic.

Bridging the gap from physics to cell biology.......2002-02-20
I wish there was a way to give a book more than five stars, because if there was, this book would get them! One of the most important trends in cell biology in recent years is the study of mechanics at a single molecule level. Since most of the really interesting processes in cell biology, such as division and motility, ultimately are carried out by molecules that convert energy into motion, the question of how these molecules actually move has very broad implications and impinged on everyone. However, in order to understand this, one has to understand some basic physics which of course involves some math. The biologist who is interested in this subject thus has two, and only two options. one is to bury one's head in the sand and say its just too hard to understand, and the other is to read Joe Howard's book. Although the mathematical content is readily apparent, only the basics are needed to get started. The author has thoughtfully compiled detailed derivations at the end in an appendix, so that one can see the details without becoming enmired in them on first reading. Considering the potential difficulties of taking a "hard science" approach to cell biology, the book is remarkably easy to read, which is a tribute to the thought the author has put into presenting the subject in the most logical possible way.
In addition to being an excellent entry point for biologists into this subject, this book would also be an excellent resource for engineers who become interested in cell biology (like myself) because it presents many of the current research frontiers in cell biology from an essentially engineering perspective and using quantitative reasoning. Again, the author has taken great pains to present the subject in a logical way that does not require much prior knowledge about biology on the part of the reader. Thus, either for biologists who want to learn about the quantitative/physical approach to cell biology, and for engineers or physicists who want to learn how they can apply their type of thinking to problems of cell biology, this book is highly recommended.

Paul Shepard was an ecologist with a Yale Ph.D. who spent more than 40 years studying human evolution. With The Others: How Animals Made Us Human Shepard, who died in 1996, wrote a masterful book about the relationship we've always had with animals. The idea behind the book, that humans have always depended on animals, and that the dependence has greatly affected what we are, seems simple at first. But Shepard combined prodigious scholarship with eloquent writing to produce a very entertaining and informative look at that special relationship. Among the topics covered in The Others are the role animals have played in myth and folklore, the uses to which humans have put animals, and even the role of animals in the cartoons of Gary Larson.
Book Description
Paul Shepard has been one of the most brilliant and original thinkers in the field of human evolution and ecology for more than forty years. His thought-provoking ideas on the role of animals in human thought, dreams, personal identity, and other psychological and religious contexts have been presented in a series of seminal writings, including Thinking Animals, The Tender Carnivore and the Sacred Game, and now The Others, his most eloquent book to date.
The Others is a fascinating and wide-ranging examination of how diverse cultures have thought about, reacted to, and interacted with animals. Shepard argues that humans evolved watching other animal species, participating in their world, suffering them as parasites, wearing their feathers and skins, and making tools of their bones and antlers. For millennia, we have communicated their significance by dancing, sculpting, performing, imaging, narrating, and thinking them. The human species cannot be fully itself without these others.
Shepard considers animals as others in a world where otherness of all kinds is in danger, and in which otherness is essential to the discovery of the true self. We must understand what to make of our encounters with animals, because as we prosper they vanish, and ultimately our prosperity may amount to nothing without them.

To understand animals is to understand yourself.......2005-05-02
Paul Shepard's book, The Others: how animals made us human, is a thoughtful analysis of how animals played a role in determining who and what we are as human animals. As in discussions of religion and politics, you will not agree with everything Professor Shepard writes. However, you will agree that he has developed a credible case that you cannot understand people, whether 10,000 years ago or today, without a better understanding of how Homo erectus and Homo sapiens interacted with both food and predatory animals 100,000 or 1,000,000 years ago. It will make you think, and that, not manipulation, is Professor Shepard's goal.
Disappointing. Hunter perspective. .......2004-11-15
The layout is attractive and promising, with the beginning of each chapter accompanied by an 1800's steel-engraving of anthropomorphic animals (from children's books or political cartoons) and an appropriate quote or two, some of which are very wise. However, it is completely different from my expectations.
In the introduction, the author greets us as being a masculine hunter, fascinated by the concept of "sacred prey," who views animals in a very utilitarian fashion ("user and the used") despite how his boyhood was spent in not a farm (where a utilitarian viewpoint usually results from) but a suburb (where he grew fond of animals through hobbies such as butterfly collections, egg collecting, and something about small animals and a BB gun.)
Quote from page 7: "The only way I could resolve this contradiction of both loving and killing animals was, on the one hand, to try to understand 'native' cosmologies (or their traces in the modern unconcious) in which killing and eating animals was a positive quality and, on the other hand, to seek the flaws in the 'humane' movement in all its forms."
At this point I can say with certainty that this is, without a doubt, NOT a book for PETA or vegetarians, since clearly he'll be attacking those viewpoints. It is also not for those who want to view animals as sacred in a happy, friendly everyone-gets-along sort of way, since this is quite dark and grotesque with some troubling mental images that you might not be comfortable with. (Poetic descriptions of death throes, for example.) If you are the sort of person who resonates with the concept of "sacred prey" and wants to learn more about it, and can deal with the gritty reality of predation, go ahead and read it.
Dense, but highly effective.......2003-05-03
Paul Shepard will probably be viewed as one of the more important philosophers of nature in the future. He more or less created the field of human ecology and his books have had a major influence on the environmental movement. All of his books are worth reading and are recommended. However Shepard is not to be taken lightly. His work is dense, at times difficult, and will shake up your thinking. From his first major work, "Man in the landscape," to the end of his life he threw off ideas like a grinding stone throwing off sparks. If you are really serious about the idea that human evolutionary history is important to our current lives then Paul Shepard is for you. If you are looking for a light read about animals, I'd look elsewhere.
A thoughtful commentary on how Animals influence us.......1999-12-18
Paul Shepherd was a great thinker, and I regret that I only became aware of his work very recently. His thesis throughout most of his work is that civilization as we know it is the true enemy of human beings. We have insulated ourselves from nature and from our teachers the animals. I do not always agree with his point of view, but he presents his ideas in such a way as to allow you to grasp and test them, and certainly not to shove them down your throat or tell you that this is the absolute truth. He really gets you to think.

Customer Reviews:
Not satisfied.......2007-10-18
I found this book superficial. I bought it to learn how to kitesurf but the section was only about 40 pages without much technical details. The other sections are about land, snow, etc... Also to much about the history of kiting which in my opinion shouldn't take this many pages in a technical manual. 'The "ultimate" book of power kiting and kiteboarding', not really. I returned the book the same day, and looked for a better one.
A nice kitesurfing guide.......2007-09-19
I found this book very helpful. It contains, history of the sport and a lot of important techniques and tips, starting from the amateur level and moving on to advanced level 3 tricks. I recommend it.

Not as complete as I thought it would be.......2007-09-24
This book was not all it was cracked up to be, for me. I expected to be able to write down all the important homeowner information in it, and refer to it for years to come. However, there is space to enter ONE chimney cleaning (a task that should be done annually) and similarly space to put in info for ONE computer, ONE printer, etc. REALLY? In the past 5 years I've owned/purchased 3 printers and 2 computers.
While the organization and scope of this book are OK, there's just not enough room or flexibility built into it to make it useful for the many types of homeowners there are out there.
I found something called Life.doc at Target and that seems to fit my needs much better. Comes with a disc to print out more/different pages so that you can customize it for your particular needs.
An Absolute Necessity for Homeowners.......2007-02-12
I discovered this type of book years ago and found it a useful teacher of just what homeowners face in terms of upkeep. It's a useful place to keep track of expenditures and even plans. Houses are like gardens. They require constant tending and care to function comfortably and beautifully.
A couple of years ago I gave a copy of this book to a friend as a housewarming present. Another friend who was present at the "gifting" called it a "baby book for a house," which I thought was a marvelous description.
My husband and I have just bought another house in another state (meaning that in both senses of the word) so we're ready to begin a new diary. We chose this one again because it's so complete.
Great Book!!!!!!!.......2006-11-10
I am a REALTOR and I give this book to every person who buys a home from me. I figure the day of closing is the best time to start keeping a record of the home and anything done to it. The only thing I don't like is that the original book I bought is spiral bound (I like that!) and the recent ones I have purchased are not spiral, but no matter, I still buy the book and my clients seem to apprecite them.
Not what I expected.......2003-06-27
I guess based on the reviews I was expecting more than pages listed with all types of rooms that the average house would not have with blanks to fill in the size of the rooms. Most of the blanks for the rooms you would have no idea how to comlete unless you built or renovated your house. I would have saved money buying a binder and marking the sizes and dimensions of the rooms, windows, etc.
Excellent for tracking Household items!.......2003-05-28
This book is wonderful. We were looking on Amazon for something to track our remodeling on the house and this is the most comprehensive book we could find. It does not leave anything out, from writing down the paint brand and color name, it also has a place for a smudge of color to be added to the page itself. It is definitely a good tool to have.
Customer Reviews:
Great organizer - even for multi-family home!.......2000-01-26
My husband and I bought a 2-flat, and his parents gave us this book. This is our first house, and the diary made us realize how many things there are about a house that we need to keep track of. The space to put wall and floor covering information is especially helpful, since we'll probably be painting the rental unit a lot. The book provides plenty of space for writing, but could use some pages with folder-type pockets for receipts. I'm sure we be better able to list the selling points when we're ready to move out as a result of using this book.
