Book Description
In the first book to focus on African American attitudes toward Japan and China, Marc Gallicchio examines the rise and fall of black internationalism in the first half of the twentieth century. This daring new approach to world politics failed in its effort to seek solidarity with the two Asian countries, but it succeeded in rallying black Americans in the struggle for civil rights.
Black internationalism emphasized the role of race or color in world politics and linked the domestic struggle of African Americans with the freedom struggle of emerging nations "of color," such as India and much of Africa. In the early twentieth century, black internationalists, including W. E. B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey, embraced Japan as a potential champion of the darker races, despite Japan's imperialism in China. After Pearl Harbor, black internationalists reversed their position and identified Nationalist China as an ally in the war against racism.
In the end, black internationalism was unsuccessful as an interpretation of international affairs. The failed quest for alliances with Japan and China, Gallicchio argues, foreshadowed the difficulty black Americans would encounter in seeking redress for American racism in the international arena.

Excellent reference for those not familiar with ecology terms.......2007-01-05
My background is physics and I used this book in my radioecology class. I found it very helpful in looking up ecological terms I'm not familiar with in the books and journals I had to read. The definitions are easy to understand and find.
A valuable resource for ecology students.......2004-07-28
My graduate advisor recommended this book and I wish I'd had it sooner. It has been extremely helpful with both my classwork and my thesis. When muttling through scientific literature, this has come in handy for understanding the esoteric vocabulary. It is laid out just like a Webster's dictionary, so terms are easy to find. There are also 28 Appendices with everything from maps of goegraphic regions and biomes to units conversions to abbrevaitons and proof correction marks. It is also good for finding the correct term to describe that concept your professor was discussing in class.
excellent reference piece.......2001-05-18
this is an excellent reference piece to any biologist. It has alot of the key words that any biologist who is in the fields of evolution, ecology, systematics, taxonomy to name a few. I myself am a graduate student and a couple of us have it and has become an invaluable piece to our librairies.
A very nice dictionary for students majoring biology.......2000-05-04
I bought the dictionary of first edtion twelve years ago. I found its explanation about ecology, evolution, and systematics is very easily reading and useful to students majoring biology. It let me understand many terms, and read the texts and references more easily. I'm very gald to know the new edition was published. I believe that the new edition will give readers more useful and modern words of ecology, evolution, and sytematics.

Consider the lynx, a medium-sized cat of boreal regions of North America, "a solitary animal, associated with the opposite sex only during mating." Consider the Oldfield mouse, Peromyscus polionotus, once abundant in abandoned fields and beaches from South Carolina to northern Florida. These are but two of the 390 species covered in this densely informative, well-illustrated guidebook to the mammals of North America, with photographs keyed to textual descriptions that cover a given animal's physical features, range and habitat, breeding characteristics, and behavior (and, helpfully, that list other animals with which it might be confused). This easy-to-use handbook makes a superb addition to any naturalist's library. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
From a stop-action photograph of the amazing flying squirrel to Big Horn Sheep perched on a rock face, this guide puts the world of mammals in your hands. Illustrated with more than 300 full-color photographs, each species account includes information on physical characteristics, size, similar species, breeding, tracks and other signs, habitat, and range, as well as commentary on feeding, nesting, and other behaviors. Easy-to-read range maps, detailed anatomical illustrations of different mammals, track illustrations, and a state-by-state location guide make this the decisive authority on North American mammals.

indispensible for any naturalist's library.......2007-10-02
As with all the Audubon Field Guides, so too with this one - it is well made, with good binding and a durable leatherette cover; the index is well organized with links to the color plates; and the color photos are the best of any of the field guides.
The descriptions, albeit way too brief, are concise and straight forward. There are 390 mammal species covered - range and habitat, behavior patterns, and track illustrations round out the textual information.
This edition was updated in 1996, so it's not as dated as some of the other Audubon guides. Although the #1 deficiency of these guides is the inadequate summaries (the details really need to be fleshed out), these guides are on the whole better than the Peterson and Stokes guides. This volume has its place in any serious naturalist's library.

Great as always.......2007-01-10
If you have seen any of the other Audobon Society Books, you know how good they are. They provide the necessary information on kinds of animals I've never even heard of. I like that the book includes color photographs as well.
Field Guide to North American Mammals.......2006-06-29
From the shrews to the bears, this guide is what one should have in the field. . .especially in Alaska.
Awesome Field Guide.......2006-06-16
This guide includes all sorts of animals in and around my area. It has a very thorough explanation of the animals and how to identify them. Whats really useful is the pictures. There are several pictures for each species including Summer coat & Winter coat. This is especially helpful if you are out animal watching during different times of year. I love going out exploring and coming home to look up the critters I saw.
The best .........................2002-11-21
These are the BEST field guides we have ever owned. We have the trees, western USA birds, trees and sealife ones and they are a wonderful size and fit easily into a coat pocket or glove compartment of ones car and of course a back pack. They make a GREAT gift and during the Christmas season a great stocking stuffer.
They are so complete as far as information goes, telling the reader what the migration and nesting habits are, where the birds can be found and they have wonderful photographs that are so useful when out on a hike. Our son loved them growing up and with a set of binoculars on a hike a person can find hours passing and not realize it.
The covers on the books (vinyl) make it easy to keep them clean. Buy at least one and I assure you, you will be hooked..........

Very Interesting Overview.......2007-01-10
This book exceeded my expectations. Unlike some other intro / how to books I have consulted on other subjects which seamed to me to be a thinly veiled recycling of stock photos, this book is what it claims. I was impressed by its comprehensiveness, detail, and great pictures. Not being a freediver, I was amazed by the freediving accounts described within. Disclaimer: I am not a freediver. Before ordering the book I hardly knew what freediving was.
The "Bible" for the sport.......2007-01-07
This is a great book if you are a novice, intermediate or advanced spearo. The information on gear is clear and concise, especially in regards to rigging your gun. The chapters on the various types of pelagic fish that are hunted is thorough and informative. Dr. Maas writes not so much as a person that did a lot of research, but more importantly as a person who has experience in the areas he is writing about. His first hand accounts are entertaining and educational.
This book is a must have for anyone in this sport. It will want to make you get in the water.
Truly incredible tales.......2002-01-23
I am an avid scuba diver who likes to hunt for lobster and fish. I was not prepared for what I found in this book. The casual approach to entering the ocean food chain to hunt large tuna and marlin among large great white sharks left me wondering if Terry Maas (the author) has a death wish. Nevertheless, I think I will try this sport on a smaller scale and hopefully venture to south of Cabo to try my hand at large yellowfin. I found this book to be very matter of fact about a not so standard way to kill some time on your vacation. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves diving, extreme adventure, and the ocean.
A comprehensive guide for intermediate and advanced spearos.......1998-09-06
This book contains a plethora of interesting stories,as well as useful information for the aspiring blue water hunter. One learns that not all spearfishermen desire to shoot everything in the sea, but that their involvemnt in the preservation of the ocean's resources is tempered with an attitude of respectful game gathering.
Best book of its kind........1998-07-01
I've only moved "off the shelf" and into the blue this year, having used a sling since childhood. Had I read this book earlier I would have had many more years' experience by now. It covers a range of topics and is well illustrated. A good practical guide to the sport spiced with enough of the sort of chilling (sharks, line tangles, blackout) and inspiring (marlin hunters, jewfish hunted by sound alone, bluefin rocketing by at 50 mph) story-talk to captivate even my nondiving friends. I've read many of these stories out loud to hushed circles of friends. The comments on safety are reasonable and reflect a good respect for those who've lived a life in the water. A good job all round; I look forward to Terry's next.

Excellent resource.......2004-04-11
I've been looking for descriptions of festivities from the Latin American world for a long time. And it's not easy ! Too often it's assumed that everyone knows whar Cinco de Mayo is all abour, but it's all mysterious and novel in my part of the world.
Thank you very much Valerie Menard for your excellent resource
One of the best books on the subject.......2003-03-13
There are not a lot of comprehensive books on Latin American Holidays (many on individual holidays, but few books that offer a solid description of multiple holidays). This book, though it focuses exclusively on the holidays and how they are celebrated in the United States, does manage to describe a number of holidays, and best of all, gives lots of ideas for activities (whether its recipes, or children's activity, or websites to visit for more information) that would work just as well in a classroom or in your own home, whether you hope to resurrect your own families' traditions, or create new traditions of your own. The layout is lovely, and the information is fairly complete, giving historical descriptions as well as descriptions of the traditions associated with the holiday. I highly recommend this book. Also note that the book is available in Spanish, under the title (I believe) _Tradiciones_.
mixed effort.......2002-06-11
There is a necessity for a book like this, although this book could have done a more even job of filling the need. A resource on some of the latino holiday/celebrations, slanted towards how they are celebrated in the U.S., this is can be a helpful resource.
The down side is not all the celbrations are covered that you would expect; practically nothing about how Carneval (Mardi Gras) is celebrated in Latin America itself, only a mention of the Miami, Florida festivity. And there is absolutely no mention of Semana Santa, the week before Easter. On the other hand, a good job of describing the difference between Cinco de Mayo and the real Mexican Independence day in September; as well as receipes and insights that give the book a light-hearted feel. If you are looking for information on a specific holiday, this good be a good resource or a complete blank: If you are looking to find out more about Lation culture, this will be helpful. This is not a travel resource to prepare so much for visiting Latin America during festivals, meant more for understanding the celebrations here in the States, how they are celebrated, why, and their origins.
Makes a great gift!.......2001-04-21
When my sister-in-law was planning to get married, I wanted to get her a gift that she could keep and refer to throughout her future. We come from a large Hispanic family, so when I saw this book I was impressed. It made a cute gift and she was really excited to have gotten it. It goes thru all the different Mexican-themed holidays, offering history and ways to celebrate. Once she has kids, I know they will like it too!
great resource book.......2000-07-14
Its really great you can learn about the different celebrations of the Latino culture. You'll also find some traditional recipes, and other little fact we might have never bothered to learn from our parents. Its a nice and easy read. Its a great book for us latinos who want to know more about our traditions and or those who are interested in our culture. Everyone Latino and NON alike should go out and get this book its a great reference guide into the Latino culture, celebrations, and traditions.
