From the author: This article presents an empirical study of the determinants of per capita economic growth in the group of economies forming ASEAN using data from 1965 to 1994. Particular attention is paid to the contribution of services to the growth of real GDP per capita. Estimation results of a structural per capita growth equation reveal that growth of services exerts a statistically significant positive effect. In addition, the results confirm a strong positive influence of growth in manufacturing and government spending on service sector expansion. Furthermore, services also have a spillover effect on manufacturing.

Book Description
Coastal Conservation and Management provides the reader with a synthesis of the range and variation of the main coastal formations and includes practical guidance on their management. The book discusses all the main coastal habitats of importance for nature conservation (saltmarsh, shingle, sand dune and seacliff) as well as combinations of these habitats (estuaries and other coastal wetlands). It offers a comprehensive picture of both the soft sedimentary formations and those which are more resilient. While these habitats have all been covered elsewhere in the literature, no single volume gives such a wide-ranging account. An attempt is made throughout to provide the reader with a basic understanding of the importance and range of variation of each habitat and coastal ecosystem. The principal issues are discussed and the key management options identified. Some prescriptive suggestions are made, though for the most part, the reader is left to ponder the issues and their possible solutions. The book argues for a more dynamic approach to the conservation of coastal habitats commensurate with the nature of the ecosystems themselves. Coastal Conservation and Management also stresses interrelationships with human use. By bringing these elements together, it highlights the need for new approaches to conservation management, which accept that change can be a healing force in the rehabilitation of degraded coastal areas. In this context, the book brings the geomorphology of coastal systems to the fore, suggesting that they may be more robust than is normally suggested. In the face of global warming, Coastal Conservation and Management also advocates a reappraisal of the value of natural systems as a means of providing a more flexible and efficient response to rising sea levels.

Book Description
The voices of birds have always been a source of fascination.
Natures Music brings together some of the worlds experts on birdsong, to review the advances that have taken place in our understanding of how and why birds sing, what their songs and calls mean, and how they have evolved. All contributors have strived to speak, not only to fellow experts, but also to the general reader. The result is a book of readable science, richly illustrated with recordings and pictures of the sounds of birds.
Bird song is much more than just one behaviour of a single, particular group of organisms. It is a model for the study of a wide variety of animal behaviour systems, ecological, evolutionary and neurobiological. Bird song sits at the intersection of breeding, social and cognitive behaviour and ecology. As such interest in this book will extend far beyond the purely ornithological - to behavioural ecologists psychologists and neurobiologists of all kinds.
* The scoop on local dialects in birdsong
* How birdsongs are used for fighting and flirting
* The writers are all international authorities on their subject
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive Bird Song.......2005-04-30
This volume brings together the findings of the dramatic bird song research in the last 50 years. The research was launched by W. H. Thorpe in the 1950s, but it was his student Peter Marler who turned the agenda into an explosion of work and exciting findings. Marler and his students have energized not only biology, but psychology, linguistics, and evolutionary biology. Key results are summarized in this huge volume, dedicated to the memory of the late Luis Baptista, one of Marler's early students.
Some particularly dramatic findings of the last 50 years include the widespread existence of learned song-dialects; the importance of learning in general; the ability of many birds to sing two notes at once; the many purposes to which song is put; and the degree to which birds are conscious of meanings and structures. Before the Marler revolution, biologists usually thought of birds as "birdbrains," driven solely by instinct or primitive stimulus-response learning. Now we know birds learn very complicated songs, often from other species, and plan ahead to accomplish their goals by varied communication strategies. They aren't as smart as humans or apes, but they are far smarter than we used to think we were. They continue to surprise us.
Bird song and bird society can be useful simple models for us; they show how relatively complex systems can evolve, and provide ideas for how human (proto-)language and society might have evolved a million, or a few million, years ago. This book does not get much into that realm of speculation, but some of the authors here (notably W. T. Fitch) have worked with linguists on these questions. We need more work on this. Moreover, humans and songbirds share true music; apes don't seem to have it. To understand how humans evolved musical competence, we have to look at avian models.
Two cautionary notes. First, this is a book for professionals; it won't be easily accessible to the general reader. Fortunately, one of the authors, Don Kroodsma, has filled the gap with his new book THE SINGING LIFE OF BIRDS. The second is that the recording quality of the CD's is uneven; the nightingales sure don't sound as good as they do in the woods of south France!
One chapter treats conservation issues; I wish it were longer and more comprehensive. Since Rachel Carson's classic book SILENT SPRING, Carson's worst fears have come to pass in much of the world. Just in the last five years, spring has become almost totally silent (in regard to bird song) at my house. Not only the pesticides she feared, but urbanization, global warming (fires, droughts...), and now West Nile virus are killing off the songbirds. The cover of the present book portrays a meadowlark. This formerly abundant bird has been reduced in numbers by about 99% in fast-urbanizing southern California since my youth, and is now a genuinely rare bird over almost all its range. The younger authors of this book may live to see their subject matter go extinct. My younger children have grown up in a song-deprived world; my grandchildren hear almost no bird songs at all, except on the wildlife programs they love to watch on TV.
Thus, I would very, very, very strongly urge all students of bird song to get out there and document wild birds and their songs, while there is time. Much of this book deals with experiments on domesticated birds. Such work is very valuable, but we desperately need to get the wild songs documented while yet we can.

Another Masterpiece!.......2003-08-26
Berkes has done it again with the highly anticipated Marsh Morning! Once again, her sequel to Marsh Music skillfully integrates music and nature while this time around focusing on various types of birds and musical terminology. Regardless of whether you are a bird watcher or music lover, Berkes's rhythmic language will engage anyone who reads her book. The artistic representations reveal a diversity of birds while exhibiting the most spectacular surroundings; these phenomenal watercolor illustrations allow the reader to truly experience the environment. The glossary of musical terms and descriptions of birds lend to this book's informative nature. The story and pictures are sure to delight both the young and old alike!
Another excellent book by Marianne Berkes.......2003-06-10
To complement "Marsh Music", "Marsh Morning" talks in a poetic form about bird songs in the marsh. This picture book combines music, poetry and "bird watching." The illustrations go fabulously with the text. The glossary explains each of the 15 birds, its physical description and its voice. The bibliography of bird books adds to its worth. A wonderful addition in many ways.

Book Description
It shouldn't have happened; 1992 was supposed to have been Arazi's year. But the horse heralded as "the next Secretariat" finished eighth. Lil E. Tee, the 17-to-1 long shot with a dime-store pedigree, stunned the world by winning the 118th running of the Kentucky Derby. The Longest Shot tells the amazing story of the most unlikely thoroughbred champion since Seabiscuit.
Customer Reviews:
A Pleasant Surprise.......2003-12-12
It took me until 2003 to read this book. As the book says Lil E. Tee had a dime store pedigree and I figured that being the case this book could not be that good. Boy was I wrong. Eisenberg researched this Lil E. Tee's story thoroughly. He loads the book with detail yet it reads like a novel. It is a fascinating creation. I could not put it down.
This May Be One of the Best Horse Racing Books Ever!.......2003-06-24
In May 1992, I sat down to watch the Kentucky Derby expecting to watch the coronation of a horse named Arazi as the best horse since Secretariat. However, a horse I had never heard of before, Lil E. Tee, pulled a shocking upset of Arazi and won the Run for the Roses. After Lil E. Tee failed to win the Preakness Stakes, he was forgotten in my mind. That was until I picked up this book.
John Eisenberg's story of Lil E. Tee is one of the most fascinating horse racing stories you will ever read. A horse with suspect breeding, chronic colic problems, bad legs and who changed hands several times (including once for a mere $3,000) went on to win the Kentucky Derby over several royally-bred colts plus the so-called unbeatable Arazi. He also gave an accomplished jockey, Pat Day, his first (and so far, only) Kentucky Derby winner, when Day himself thought Lil E. Tee was one of his worst Derby mounts ever.
John Eisenberg has provided a well-researched tale of the life of Lil E. Tee prior to the Derby. Interviews have been conducted with pretty much all of the principles of his story and those tales have been woven into an entertaining story that reads almost like fiction.
"The Longest Shot" isn't quite the masterpiece of Laura Hillenbrand's "Seabiscuit", but I think that this book might have great potential as a movie, because it really is a true equine "Rocky"!
Bringing an obscure horse into the light..........2002-10-31
I purchased this book on a whim, let it sit around for a while, and randomly picked it up on my way to bed, thinking that I would read a little bit and then quickly fall asleep. Little did I know that I would be up all night, my usually short attention span completely riveted, as time flew by. This book provides a wealth of information about Lil E Tee's origin, racing career, and the people around him.
Even though I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the author had a tendency to introduce characters out of sequence. For example, sometimes background information would be provided on a person who was not involved in the progression of the story until several chapters later. By breaking up the sequence in this manner, the flow of the story was impaired and choppy. The author's sentence structure also tended to be loose and brief. Also this oversimplification made reading the story easier and faster, I did feel like the book was written for a younger audience.
Again, the subject matter was facsinating and the author obviously did a lot of work to uncover a wealth of information on the life of a relatively obscure racehorse. If you're interested in racing trivia, or are simply looking for a captivating sports story, then this book should cater to you!
This will re-kindle your interest in horse racing.......1999-06-12
I thoroughly enjoyed The Longest Shot. I found it at my local library but have since purchased a copy for my growing horse library. I've been a horse nut my whole life but had not been following racing too closely. However, reading this book rekindled my interest. The author weaves the story of the horse and his people. There was always someone who believed in the horse and his career continued. The trainer, Lynn Whiting, and the jockey, Pat Day are particularly interesting as they help this horse towards the top of the equine world. One does not have to be an expert in the racing world to enjoy the book, but at the same time it does not speak down to the reader. I have recommended the book to my family members who have accompanied me on my adventures to Kentucky to visit Lil E Tee. A very well written book which will bring tears to your eyes as you realize that the horse and his connections will actually WIN the Kentucky Derby. An excellent sports book. As well written as a John Feinstein book. Read it!
A fascinating look at a stunning upset........1998-07-02
As one of millions who was caught up in "Arazi" fever following his stunning Breeders' Cup Juvenile win, this book provides a fascinating look at a horse which most people totally over looked.
Book Description
Written by a knowledgeable seagoing physician, this book addresses the medical layman. It is thoroughly illustrated and presented in a format that is easy to follow, even in an emergency. Covering a wide range of medical problems that may be encountered at sea, Dr. Beilan explains how to prepare medical histories of the crew before leaving on a voyage, set up a medical kit according to the type of voyage to be made, determine priorities in the event of a problem, make a tentative diagnosis and proceed with treatment, and provide aftercare for the patient until medical authorities can be reached. Next to having a physician in the crew, the best things a prudent skipper can have on board are a well-planned medical kit and this book. Don't leave port without it.

From abecedarius to zeugma, by way of cywydd, estribillo, Nibelungenstrophe, Tachtigers, and other poetic terms that sound like poetry, The New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics is a gold mine for readers and writers of poetry alike. First published in 1965, this tome has evolved to reflect developments in critical thinking and an expanding knowledge of non-Western poetry (without, heaven forfend, being trendy: "a reference work," the editors explain, "must always distance itself from its time while it works to embrace that time"). For this third edition, the editors write, nearly every entry has been changed significantly, and 162 entries have been added. The preface claims coverage of every poetic tradition in the world, and one doesn't doubt it. There's enough material here to keep one browsing well past Yeats's "Second Coming." If that's not enough to quench your poetic thirst, fret not: a detailed bibliography concludes each entry.
Book Description
The New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics is a comprehensive reference work dealing with all aspects of its subject: history, types, movements, prosody, and critical terminology. Prepared by recognized authorities, its articles treat their topics in sufficient depth and with enough lucidity to satisfy the scholar and the general reader alike. Entries vary in length from relatively brief notices to substantial articles of about 20,000 words.
The Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics, published in 1965, established itself book as a standard in the field. Among the 215 contributors were Northrop Frye writing on allegory, Murray Krieger on belief in poetry, Philip Wheelwright on myth, John Hollander on music, and William Carlos Williams on free verse. In 1974, the Enlarged Edition increased the entries with dozens of new subjects, including rock lyric, computer poetry, and black poetry, to name just a few.
The New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics accounts for the extraordinary change and explosion of knowledge within literary and cultural studies since the 1970s. This edition, completely revised, preserves what was most valuable from previous editions, while subjecting each existing entry to revision. Over 90 percent of the entries have been extensively revised and most major ones entirely rewritten. Completely new entries number 162, including those by new contributors Camille Paglia, Barbara Herrnstein Smith, Elaine Showalter, Houston Baker, Andrew Ross, and many more. New entries include those on cultural criticism, discourse, feminist poetics, and Chicano poetry.
Improvements cover several areas: All the recent developments in theory that bear on poetry are included; bibliographies of secondary sources are ex-tended; cross-references among entries and through blind entries have been expanded for greater ease of use; and coverage of emergent and non-Western poetries is dramatically increased. Indeed, a hallmark of the encyclopedia is its world-wide orientation on the poetry of national and cultural groups.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2007-07-11
At present I'm researching the way poets use structure as meaning in poetry. This excellent book not only explains the different poetic forms from poetic traditions from around the world, it also gives details of their history. The book is organised so information can be found quickly. The only drawback I found is the small font it uses.
A fine reference book.......2006-11-07
I have very little to add to the laudatory reviews. Some found the print too small, but for me it was not a problem - I am used to using reference works with smallish print.
I just got my copy and found a lot of fascinating information on the ode which I didn't know. From what I've read so far, the topical discussions are excellent, and there are ample biographical references for the major and some of the minor entries. All in all, it is a great resource for student, poet, poetry lover, and critic.
Comprehensive, informative and awkward .......2005-02-02
This is the most comprehensive and informative encylopedia of poetry and poetics that I know. It at times seems so comprehensive and detailed as to make understanding of its entries possible. It is in fact so overwhelming sometimes that it confuses by telling much more than I, at least, need or want to know. It seems to me in a way a very academic work, wonderful for critics but probably of very little use in inspiring to poetry. So much knowledge about poetry is not necessarily what poetry is.
Less than perfect.......2003-12-05
This book is comprehensive and probably essential for the study of poetry. But there are several serious problems. First, there is only a completely useless Table of Contents and no index. Yes, it is an encyclopedia and the entries are in alphabetical order but the subjects are very broad (Symbol, Twentieth-Century Poetics) making it necessary to scan several pages in several different subject areas without knowing if you have missed the poem or poet you are looking for. How will you know to look for comments on The Illiad under the heading of Simile or that the subject heading Intuition contains a discussion of the Neo-Platonists? Scanning pages for a specific piece of information is difficult because the print is tiny. The Preface and Acknowledgments are in big print and then they switch to very small print for the remainder of the book. You will need lots of time and a magnifying glass to take full advantage of this book.
It really is.......2003-03-06
one of the three books that any student or writer of poetry needs to own, besides a good dictionary. (The other two are Pound's "ABCs of Reading" and Shapiro's "Primer.") Answers questions & points you in the right direction for more. Once you open it, you'll wonder how you got by without it.
Book Description
With a breathtaking collection of photographs, this volume shows how rooms can be magically transformed through tromp-l'oeil murals, objects, paintings and fabrics, as well as with painted faux finishes that dazzle and beguile the viewer. These ingenious techniques turn wodden floors into opulent marble expanses, adorn plain walls with neoclassical moldings, upgrade ordinary furniture to period pieces, and add sumptuous garden views to windowless rooms.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointment.......2006-07-03
This book was photography of completed trompe l'oeil photos with not even a single instructional paragraph.
Pretty pictures..........2006-05-21
Everyone should check this book out. Yes, YOU. These aren't the cheesy badly-painted scenery murals from hardware store how-to books; this is a collection of photography of real, immersive works of art. Skim through this, get absorbed, and daydream about implementing some of them in your house, even if you can't really. Mmm. I wish I had the guts to transform my house with something like these.
Trompe L'Oeil at Home: Faux Finishes and Fantasy Setting.......2004-10-08
While there are dozens of books available with how-to instructions for a relatively small number of trompe l'oeil painting projects, very few provide a wealth of images for inspiration to let you see the possibilities. This book fills that void with a wide variety of settings, images and finishes ... enough to make you want to grab those how-to books collecting dust and plan your next (or first) attempt at trompe l'oeil!
An Illustrated History of Trompe L'Oeil.......2000-01-06
This book is a photographically illustrated essay on the history and current usage of trompe l'oeil. Trompe L'Oeil at Home has its inspiring moments but is definitely not a "how-to" manual. There are no instructions or diagrams on how to achieve any of the paint effects or murals shown. Most of the photos are from grand settings (estate homes, museums) or are ceramic dishes, fashion shots, building exteriors, movie sets, or pictures of wallpapers and borders. Less than half of the murals and projects would be used in an average home. Thus the book's title is misleading. The photographs selected for this book are primarily formal but some smaller projects are shown (bathroom "window", kitchen "shelves" etc.) The "Window with a View" (p.126) and its companion painting (untitled, p. 180 and back cover of the dust jacket) are wonderful examples of trompe l'oeil in the home. I wish more of the book was like that. There are no murals or projects with children's themes at all. For its type, this illustrated essay is an average read. If you are looking for something to inspire you in your work within the family home, or if you are looking for a "how-to" manual, you'd best keep looking.
