Book Description
This book presents a detailed picture of the evolutionary processes at work in water markets with a particular focus on theory and practice in Australia. Policymakers are striving to strike a balance between the pros and cons of a property rights/market based approach to the allocation of water resources, as opposed to an approach that centers on government regulation. The current movement in Australia is toward the use of markets, and numerous reforms are either underway or under consideration in that direction. This provides an ideal opportunity to observe the factors at play in determining the balance and hence the mix of policy instruments at work. The distinguished contributors offer a range of perspectives - economic, legal, environmental - and combine conceptual analysis with evidence from real policy decisions. Policymakers and governmental advisers will find this book timely and extremely relevant to making decisions on what is arguably the world's most critical natural resource. The Evolution of Markets for Water will also be of great interest to academics and students with an interest in natural resource economics, law and management.

clear and informative.......2006-03-14
Great book! Clear and concise, written with a no-nonsense, straight to the point approach, the book presents key ingredients to business processes analysis and reengineering. Even if you don't follow the method exactly as described, the concepts presented are useful in the real-life of a wide range of roles, from executive management to team members.
Very easy to read, you often wonder "why did I never thought of that?". As you read the book you start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, and realize that business processes reengineering does not have to be a mysterious process conducted from the Ivory Tower.
Indeed, Michael Wood makes sense out of chaos and draws a path easy to follow, with clear guidelines and practical examples. The book provides enough theory to demonstrate the approach, but is more an "how-to" guide very useful on day to day activities.
Congratulations Michael on a very useful book!
Simple Measurable Attainable Realistic Timely.......2005-12-28
I received the Helix Factor as a gift, and read its back cover with skepticism. The back cover made claims that I couldn't expect to realize from reading one thin book. "You too can generare 500 to 1000 percent!"
I cracked the cover on my trek into work, and would have missed my bus stop if I wasn't with my lovely wife. The preface and dedication struck a chord, and the reasoning presented for writing the book inspired my curiosity. I dove into the first chapter "Helping people and Organizations Effect Positive Outomes". I was pleaseantly surprized how this chapter helped me to work through some issues that I was having difficulty with as a new Manager, introducing change management to an older company that had recently grown into an international organization through acquisition and merger.
The entire book was lacking fluff, and served up a good portion of not so common, common sense. As I got further and further into this book, I found myself shaking my head, laughing, and wondering why this book hadn't been written before! It is a collection of simple ideas, arranged in a logical fashion, and spelled out in easy to read, large type. It sits well with the SMART Objectives concept.
I applaud Michael Wood for taking the time to think his processes through, for clarifying many things about self and team improvement, and for contributing this knowledge to others. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is starting out in process improvement or design, management, and team building.
My only disappoinment was that the book referenced a "workbook" that I couldn't locate locally. I would very much enjoy reviewing this workbook and developing course material around it for delivery to others. Locating the workbook and reading the next version are on my To-Do list for 2006.
Thank you Michael,
Mark Brunner
no pretensions of erudite scholarship, simple down to earth advice that works..........2005-08-25
More than a book, I would like to call it a manual, for that is what it is! This book, though written by a scholar, does not have any 'scholarly' pretensions, which is what makes it very easy to read. The author has no agenda to 'showcase' his erudition, but simply does the job he has at hand.
The biggest impediment in bringing about any organisational change is to carry the opinion of all the people involved in the change process. I am sure that this book will go a long way in convincing the fence sitters about the feasibility of bringing about a change with a finite effort! It will surely help the change managers to get more buy-in from all concerned.
For large changes, it is not sufficient that the CXO be convinced about the change. His vision has to be shared by all the others down the line. This book will also help in getting people on board the change wagon!
It perplexes me why the cover page shows a spiral, though! Maybe I am wrong, but my idea of a helix is slightly different...
THIS BOOK MAY BE HARMFUL TO YOUR COMPETITORS.......2004-05-25
Once I started reading this book, I was so hooked on the Helix approach that I absolutely had to read Helix II--The Implementer's Guide (more about that later). Then, after reading the first chapter, I recall saying aloud, "Finally, someone can explain how to align business processes to strategies and strategies to stakeholders' wants and needs. This author understands what line-of-site is all about." Using a series of easy to understand common-sense principles and factors, Mr. Wood provides a high-level step-by-step approach to making business process improvement a reality.
If you are ready to change the way you do business, and want to get the edge on your competitors, this is a must read. To obtain a full appreciation for the Helix methodology, however, you must read the Helix Factor II-The Implementer's Guide. This definitive guide will give you all the tools you need to make your business processes more efficient and create a positive impact on your bottom line. It is an investment in your business' future.
Are You Ready for (Continuous) Continuous Improvement?.......2002-02-28
The title for this review is not a typo, nor is it redundant. Read "The Helix Factor". Internalize the principles.
Ask yourself and your organization the same questions that Michael Wood identifies in his book. Prepare your organization to benefit continuously by continuing to improve your business processes that tie directly to your business objectives.
If there is a missing link to Six Sigma, it is found in this book. This a "must read" for the business executive looking to take his company to the top. For those that feel they are at the top, you had best read this to stay there! And, more importantly, if your company faces seriuos business challeges, you may begin to map your renewal by adhering to the Helix Methodology.
Thank you Michael for a methodology that makes a difference!

This second edition illustrates the value of modern computer intensive methods in the solution of a wide range of problems, with particular emphasis on biological applications. Examples given in the text include the controversial topic of whether there is periodicity between co-occurrences of species on islands.
Customer Reviews:
Data referenced in book are suspect.......2003-02-14
I found this book rather interesting, with a nice mix of methods and applications. I intended to use some of the examples in a course that I am teaching. There are many examples given which use data sets to illustrate important concepts. However, I was unable to access several of these data sets. I contacted the author and mentioned that I was particularly interested in accessing two of the data sets that were referenced in the book --- his reply was that data sets for the book were available at a specific URL. Indeed there were several data sets at this location; but, not the data sets that I had mentioned in my inquiry.
I did a lot of searching on my own for these data sets. One of these supposedly came from Sweden; but, after extensive searching through several Swedish databases I found nothing on this particular data set. I contacted the author again and requested at least a reference or link to these data sets --- no reply to my request has been received (after 11 days).
I feel strongly that all data sets referenced in a book of this type should be available to the readers. If not, then they should not be used in examples.
excellent coverage of randomization and resampling.......2000-06-11
Manly is an excellent writer who has written several excellent texts and is an editor of a biostatistics journal. This is a revision of a very popular text on randomization or permutation methods. Because of the immense popularity of bootstrap methods (a similar resampling procedure), he elected to add some coverage of the bootstrap. All topics are covered in a clear and scholarly style and examples from biology are given. The interested reader might also look at Good (2000), Permutation Methods, 2nd Edition, published by Springer-Verlag and Edgington, Randomization Tests published by Marcel Dekker for other accounts on permutation tests. There are now several good books dedicated to bootstrap methods including Davison and Hinkley (1997), Cambridge University Press, Efron and Tibshirani (1993), CRC-Chapman and Hall and Chernick (1999), John Wiley and Sons, Inc.
A must for EVERY biologist.......2000-03-16
Statistical analysis based on resampling methods are clearly the way the bulk of statistics should be done, and the trend is towards this. Manly gives an excellent and clear treatment introducing these methods in various settings in population biology. This book is clearly a must for any biologist that has to deal with data, and it should be read by all such biologist. I shamelessly copy from this book when I present resampling methods to my graduate biostatistics class.

Wolves, extinct in many regions and necessarily furtive, are a rare sight in the wild. Anyone curious about the elusive Canis lupus might do well to start their search from an armchair, with this wide-ranging coffee table book as their guide. Originally published by the Nature Company in 1993, this reissued "celebration" is in fact an enormous collage of stories, legends, poetry, paintings, and photos relating to this largest member of the canine family. Short chapters such as "On the Hunt," "Wolves at Play," and "The Wolf Way of Birth," offer insight into the lives of wolves, with excerpts from the work of notable writers such as Farley Mowat, Lois Crisler, Barry Lopez and Edward Hoagland. The book also features a remarkable collection of photographs, including work by Jim Brandenburg--one of the world's foremost wolf photographers, and a first look at Mattias Klum's photos of wolves in his native Sweden.
Emphasizing the breadth rather than depth of wolf studies, Wolf provides a wide-ranging, accessible look at this most admired, and vilified, of carnivores. --Maria Dolan
Book Description
"This handsome new book presents the wolf in fact, fiction, legend, folklore, and art, pairing outstanding color photographs and art reproductions with excerpts from writings about wolves. The photos are the work of well-known nature and outdoor photographers, and the writings include observations by field biologists...and fiction, poetry, and folk legends from many lands....has much to teach about the habits and unique social structure of wolves and also raises important questions about the issue of the preservation of the wolf...and its reintroduction to former habitats....will be hailed by wolf enthusiasts and is recommended wherever interest warrants."--Library Journal. "...clearly aims to...endow wolves with some of the majesty they deserve. Plentiful color photographs are interspersed among the essays, poems and more than a few Native American myths."--Publisher's Weekly. "...a tribute to the enduring mystique of the wolf..."--American Bookseller. "...will inform, inspire, and enthrall readers of all ages."--Book Links. "...beautiful and powerful...superlative array of images....The best choice for young adults...a highly recommended purchase."--Voya.
Customer Reviews:
Quite a Nice Book!.......2002-10-09
It doesn't delve into the world of the wolf, presenting many facts and details. Instead, it dabbles in everything wolf-related. There are photos, artworks, and exerpts from many different places. It's enjoyable to read and look through. Because I'm an avid fan of wolves, there was nothing really new for me in it. However, people who are intrigued by wolves, but don't know much about these creatures, will probably find this book a wonderful way to start.
A superbly written, illustrated celebration of the wolf........2000-09-05
This coffee table exploration of the wolf explains why we are drawn to the wolf, providing scientific and social analysis which celebrates the wolf in word and image. Wolf is more than just a coffee table set of photos however - plenty of text explains their nature and natural history, making it suitable for library collections as well as coffee tables.
Beautiful photography enhances the aura & mystery of wolves........1998-12-07
The glorious photography and illustrations of this book enhance the aura and mystery of the wolf in its graceful and expressive beauty. The text includes an accurate description of the folklore and myths surrounding wolves, as well as firsthand reports from people who study the wolf in a natural habitat. The book is full of facts and interesting trivia written to the audience who loves the wolf as well as to the audience that perhaps fears the wolf. The world of the wolf, the way of the wolf, and the wolf of dreams and nightmares are all explored in wonderful narrative. There is a resource section in the back of the book listing organizations that work for the wolf. If you love the wolf or fear the wolf, you'll enjoy having this book.

Good Starting Place.......2006-11-10
I found this book to be helpful as a reference guide. It is a nice quick version of Endurance training and the 24 week training program is good, as it breaks down the workouts into specific training segments.
I am training for my first Ironman and will use this book in conjunction with others to develop a solid training plan.
Good Book, But Misleading Book Description!.......2004-03-12
I purchased this book based on the description that it was for beginner or intermediate triathletes ready to move from sprint distance races to olympic or half-iron distance races. The book actually presents a 24-week training plan for an Ironman distance race. There is a lot of great information in the up-front chapters - descriptions of different types of workouts, etc, but if you are not planning to train for an Ironman, the rest of the book may not be very helpful to you.

Book Description
For anyone who has blanched at the uphill prospect of finishing a long piece of writing, this book holds out something more practical than hope: it offers a plan. The Clockwork Muse is designed to help prospective authors develop a workable timetable for completing long and often formidable projects.
The idea of dashing off a manuscript in a fit of manic inspiration may be romantic, but it is not particularly practical. Instead, Eviatar Zerubavel, a prolific and successful author, describes how to set up a writing schedule and regular work habits that will take most of the anxiety and procrastination out of long-term writing, and even make it enjoyable. The dreaded "writer's block" often turns out to be simply a need for a better grasp of the temporal organization of work.
The Clockwork Muse rethinks the writing process in terms of time and organization. It offers writers a simple yet comprehensive framework that considers such variables as when to write, for how long, and how often, while keeping a sense of momentum throughout the entire project. It shows how to set priorities, balance ideals against constraints, and find the ideal time to write. For all those whose writing has languished, waiting for the "right moment," The Clockwork Muse announces that the moment has arrived.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2007-07-12
This book is short and to the point! I am currently engaged in writing my MBA thesis and I believe that I found the guidance that I am looking for in this book. I highly recommend this book for its basic yet effectual approach to thinking about/writing your thesis or dissertation. The book may be too basic for seasoned writers/scholars but for a novice scholar like myself, I find it extremely useful.
The Useless Muse.......2007-05-23
For a guide to effectively organizing one's writing, it is curious how poorly written and organized this book is. There is some potential here for a practical guide for the academic or professional writer rather than the creative artiste, particularly in regards to scheduling your time or managing multiple drafts of your work. But such possibilities are washed away by the severely padded presentation of this book, with a very loose layout and repetitive prose that are highly evident even in the mere 96 pages of text here. For instance, there are eight different space-consuming versions of Zerubavel's own outline, while the chapter on scheduling is padded to the point of absurdity with repetitive author testimonials and an endless parade of cheesy non-breakthroughs like "learn to identify the best times for your writing." The material covered here could be much more useful and believable in a journal article of less than ten pages in length. But of course, then a publisher wouldn't be able to charge full book price for this ridiculously padded pamphlet.
The most curious thing about this so-called writing guide from a so-called writing expert is its pathetic obviousness. Pronouncements like sticking to your deadlines and monitoring the progress of your drafts will not be enlightening to anyone in the only possible market demographic for this book - practitioners who already know enough about writing to seek out a guide far more advanced than this. Those who might actually be enlightened by this book's shallow and obvious recommendations have probably never written anything in their lives, and hence would never think of buying this book in the first place. Ironically, even Zerubavel recommends here that you should spend your budgeted time writing rather than engaging in pursuits that do not further your goals - such as wasting your time on useless books like this. This insubstantial and ineffective guide is a non-entity. [~doomsdayer520~]
The write stuff (especially for first-timers).......2007-02-27
When you are faced with the daunting task of a major writing project (a book, a thesis) it can be nice to know how others have done it--especially your first time around. 'The Clockwork Muse' offers two things for those in that situation: structure, and examples. The first of these (structure) helps with the practical necessity of breaking the project down into its executable elements: a writing schedule, outlines and drafts, timetables, and monitoring and ensuring progress. The second of these (the examples) are helpful to those of us who, in our own fits of self-doubt, need to know that another human has met similar obstacles and has overcome them.
'Clockwork Muse' manages to do both of these pretty well. It is stronger on the first, the structure. It reminds us that the overall job of a major writing project is taken one sentence, one page, one chapter at a time. In just about 100 pages, this book provides a basic, workable structure that can be modified by most writers to suit their individual needs. As far as examples and anecdotes go--how actual writers fare under the proposed structure, the author mostly offers examples from his own experience. While this is certainly interesting, it is one-dimensional; it would have been nice to have a wide variety of examples of how different authors, grad students, or journalists cope with the day-to-day prospect of writing a book or dissertation or long article. (And really, how helpful--or bizarre--is it to know that the author of `Clockwork Muse,' Evitar Zerubavel, sits in different chairs to write different drafts of a paragraph? To each his own....)
Not all of the suggestions offered here will work for all authors. For examples, some of us do write multiple drafts of a book straight through from start to finish. Others of us write more haphazardly, bouncing around from section to section and chapter to chapter, but still producing a solid, finished product. Zerubavel himself prefers one method over another, but in the end, his practical advice on structuring a writing project is this book's real strength. It offers sound practical help, regardless of one's writing style, and makes a good quick reference to lean upon for some comfort during those late-night moments of doubt when chapter four just isn't coming together.
for a reader who does not do a lot of writing.......2006-01-29
The book is useful for those who often procrastinate, or otherwise need a structured method for writing. The title says Clockwork. I would call it more Cookbook. Rather mechanistic. But for some of you, that framework will provide a necessary self-discipline for writing up a large project or thesis.
Having done a fair amount of writing myself, including a thesis and many provisional patents, I found that this book is personally unnecessary. But for you, it can depend on how used you are to regularly writing. It is a skill that can be honed with repetition. Zerubavel's book is directed towards those who do not do a lot of writing.
Inspiring and pragmatic, just like the title.......2004-06-11
When I was writing my dissertation, a hard-working and prolific colleague recommended this book to me. I borrowed it from my university library. It had an almost instant effect on my work, and I finished my opus quickly and relatively painlessly. Recently, I found myself procrastinating and meandering again, so I decided to buy the book!
Things I like about the Clockwork Muse: it's very short. It gives very specific, pragmatic advice. It is light on molly-coddling psychobabble, unlike Joan Bolker's "Write Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day." The latter is useful in its own way, but it didn't do anything for my work habits.

design basic for ALL fields of art.......2007-08-10
This book teaches a basic principle that all artists/teachers should use when thinking/teaching composition whether you are working two-dimensionally or three-dimensionally. Notan is a simple design principle that focuses on positive and negative space. It uses six different exercises that could be used or adapted at any age level and should be a must for the art curriculum. It also offers great historical references. It is one of the best art books you could buy for under $10.
Notan: The Dark-Light Principle Of Design.......2007-08-10
Gives a very good idea of the relationships of dark & light in design.
Took a class from Dorr many years ago. Glad to see her book back in print.
I bought this book for my Grand Daughter.
Clarifies the application of design principles: a valuable reference.: .......2006-04-18
After reading this book and doing some of the suggested exercises, I became more sensitive to negative space and related design principles and better able to apply them to my art.
Why I love Notan.......2000-08-05
The Book Notan is a stimulating journey in to the World of design.Every aspiring designer should own this book. The excercises are sure to help in the devolopment of an understanding of the importance of "negative" space and it's relationship with good design. I would recommend this book to ages 12 and up, for those with an eye for art, or who would like to devolop their eye. I find myself returning to this book on a regular basis to refresh my Vision and kick start my creativity. An Exceptional Book!!
