Book Description
The most difficult questions of sustainability are not about technology; they are about values. Answers to such questions cannot be found by asking the "experts," but can only be resolved in the political arena. In The Local Politics of Global Sustainability, author Thomas Prugh, with Robert Costanza and Herman Daly, two ofthe leading thinkers in the field of ecological economics, explore the kind of politics that can help enable us to achieve a sustainable world of our choice, rather than one imposed by external forces.
The authors begin by considering the biophysical and economic dimensions of the environmental crisis, and tracing the crisis in political discourse and our public lives to its roots. They then offer an in-depth examination of the elements of a re-energized political system that could lead to the development of more sustainable communities. Based on a type of self-governance that political scientist Benjamin Barber calls "strong democracy," the politics is one of engagement rather than consignment, empowering citizens by directly involving them in community decisionmaking. After describing how it should work, the authors provide examples of communities that are experimenting with various features of strong democratic systems.
The Local Politics of Global Sustainability explains in engaging, accessible prose the crucial biophysical, economic, and social issues involved with achieving sustainability. It offers a readable exploration of the political implications of ecological economics and will be an essential work for anyone involved in that field, as well as for students and scholars in environmental politics and policy, and anyone concerned with the theory and practical applications of the concept of sustainable development.

Looking for a workable change agent........2000-12-05
This book could eventually be one of the most important ever published within the environmental community if it encourages environmental activists to shift their approach from confrontation to "principled" negotiation. Environmental activists for most of the past thirty years have tended to confront their adversaries using "hard" negotiation as described in Getting To Yes by Fisher and Ury. This was the style implied by Herman Daly's early writings.
If "names" such as Robert Costanza and Herman Daly can shift their thinking away from confrontation and toward working with non-environmentalists as collective problem-solvers, there is no end to the possibilites. Interestingly, they endorse the process of public deliberation or what Benjamin Barber calls "strong" democracy. They are dsicovering, as many of us already know, that citizens engaged in deliberation naturally tend to gravitate toward "sustainable" concepts. Hence, if we can create forums for strong democracy in our communities, pro-environmental thinking will follow.
In this manner, public deliberation can foster "principled" negotiation where all of us look for win/win solutions and treat each other with respect. Or, we can continue to confront and litigate each other and/or wait for big brother to impose a resolution. Are we, as "ordinary" citizens, up to the challenge. Prugh et al imply we are. Those of us in the "front lines" of community development know we are. Happy reading!!
More interesting to theorists than activists.......2000-04-11
This book is a quick read, essentially an application of Barber's Strong Democracy treatise to the idea of sustainable development. It defines sustainable development as the reorientation of the economic system to accommodate inherent natural limits on energy use, waste sinks, etc. The authors point out there may be many different paths humanity may choose into the future: increasing maldistribution of resources or increasing global equity; increasing loss of biodiversity or reduced destruction of the biosphere; a bleak and degrading future or a more promising one. They posit that a move towards a strong democratic structure, with wider and deeper participation in the political system, would be a crucial step towards a more promising future.
I found the book interesting, though a little light on examples: there's one chapter devoted to historical examples of strong(er) democracy. On the other hand, the book offers some ideas about how to get there from here, how to move incrementally towards stronger democracy. The author's proposal to create the democratic foundation for a sustainable future is the major focus of the book: it would be interesting to explore in greater detail those aspects of modern culture that mitigate against popular participation, and those that might be brought into play to support it. How does the increasing homogenization of world culture, and the concomitant consumerization of the world's people (and the corresponding influence of advertising), undermine democratic participation? What trends, like the coop movement or the expanding NGO movement, help develop political participation? How can we shift the direction of the increasingly international economy and it's political implications as illustrated by the WTO, for example? What are the implications of modern communication/computer technologies, both positive and negative, on the ideas outlined here?
"Local Politics" doesn't attempt anything so grandiose. It's presents interesting ideas regarding strong democracy. I think it will be more interesting to theorists than activists, but many people might find something to chew on here.

Book Description
Climate change is the greatest challenge to face humanity. International agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol, EU regulation and country-specific national climate policies offer some hope. But all too often implementation of these high level objectives is derailed at the subnational, local and perhaps most importantly, at the individual level.
This book is the first thorough examination of the challenges to implementing international and national climate policy and strategies at the local and individual level. The authors draw on detailed studies in Sweden—so often the world leader in effective environmental solutions—to examine the full swathe of barriers and complexities including governance structures, the relationship between experts and the public, political feasibility including tax measures, perceptions of fairness and self-interest, the importance of environmental values, the roles and perceptions of organizations and professions, the place of carbon-free technologies such as wind power, the relationship between national and EU regulation, and the monumental challenge of governing the climate in a bordered and divided world. This volume is a vital source of information for all players in the climate game seeking to create effective, coordinated responses to the challenge of climate change.

Book Description
This first book to focus on cultural diversity as a key element of sustainable development in the context of science and engineering provides cross-disciplinary information and assistance in understanding our world in transition. As such, it furnishes the global scientific community and decision makers in governmental and non-governmental institutions as well as in industry with much-needed information on how the various factors affecting sustainable development -- including culture -- depend on and interfere with each other.
Featuring a contribution by the President of the Club of Rome, HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal, this is vital reading for all (natural) scientists, engineers, economists, ecologists, environmental organizations, and consultants.

Book Description
While traditionally framed as a national and international problem, climate change is also an important local issue. For the past fifteen years, while nations have fought over the terms of emissions reductions and the Kyoto Protocol, local governments and communities have been enacting innovative measures that not only prevent emissions of significant quantities of greenhouse gases but also reduce air pollution, save money, and improve the overall quality of life.
In the absence of a serious national policy that addresses global warming, these grassroots efforts can and have made a difference. Since 1993,when fourteen pioneering local governments first began to develop programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a national and international movement has formed to fight global climate change through concerted local action. These communities are having a significant effect. A handful of jurisdictions in the United States are preventing over twenty million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere annually and have saved over four hundred million dollars in the process. These initiatives include greening the local building codes, creating commercial waste reduction programs, encouraging water conservation, promoting bicycling and fuel-efficient vehicles, upgrading city buildings, advocating for the use of biodiesel for municipal transportation, and designing innovative systems and policies for reduced paper use. Two in-depth case studies-- Fort Collins, Colorado, and Portland, Oregon--demonstrate how two cities have created and implemented climate-friendly and environmentally sound habitats.
While most books on global warming focus on national and international implications and policy approaches or serve as guides to help individuals live in an ecologically sound manner, Linstroth and Bell provide a blueprint for local governments to follow. Combining an analysis of existing federal policy with examples of successful local policy, they provide practical examples of measures that can be implemented by communities and local governments across the United States.

Better Change: Best Practices for Transforming Your Organization
ASIN: 0786304995 |
Book Description
Tumultuous changes affecting corporations have left managers and employees reeling from the shocks and searching for the holy grail of management solutions to set their companies straight. But the techniques-du-jour or programs-of-the-month have done nothing but confuse employees, create chaos in the organization, and cause everyone to lose focus of the true strategic objectives. The key to success is not just some new technique or management trend. It's just not that simple. The high-performance organizations of tomorrow must learn how to deftly balance the tensions and conflicts that challenge the progress and effectiveness of any large enterprise. The Paradox Principles shows managers how to face those conflicts and use paradox as a dynamic tool to create balance and focus within an organization. Lessons learned from executives at over 200 high-performance companies and the collective experience of the Price Waterhouse Change Integration Team show managers how to achieve unparalleled success by better managing the paradoxes inherent in their industry, organization, and strategy. The authors also show managers facing unchartered waters how to: create a high performance organization that is focused and strategically balanced; develop management styles with the best blend of operational efficiency and strategic effectiveness; align the actions of everyone through the use of fewer, more effective, performance measures; manage the complexity and chaos caused by the level of change buffeting all organizations today; move beyond all the hand-wringing about behaviors and beliefs to create a new and positive culture in the organization.

Simple Lessons.......1999-05-28
This book is a fairly easy read and doesn't have too much of that doctorate, I'm trying to impress you, language. I think this use of the word paradox is becoming a bit too common these days and these authors also seem to force the concepts to make paradoxes out of them. They also throw a person's reading rhythm "out of whack" by throwing in the chapter on Information Technology which clearly doesn't belong in this book. With that said, I will say that there are some good bits of advice and methods which can be used within a business to help change things around. Overall, I think it is worth a look, but you might want to wait for the paperback version.

Good morning, my little Eichmans,.......2006-02-10
Any human who advocates animal testing should volunteer for, and submit to, the same tests him- or herself. OR SHUT HIS HYPOCRITICAL OOZING, FESTERING MAW OF A CAKEHOLE!!!
Why Animal Experimentation Matters: The Use of Animals in Me.......2005-04-11
This book does a fine job of explaining animal research mainly from the pro-research point of view. I myself am in favor of using animals in medical research for the same reason which the book points out, which is to further our medical knowledge. The essays in this book are easy to read and although it involves big medical terms they are explained so they may be understood by anyone. One thing the book talks very little about is the animal-rights groups violent protests and criminal mischief they have done to argue against the issue. Without touching the topic, it is made clear in several essays that medical research is a necessity and must be used to cure diseases that have a potential of wiping out thousands of people. I recommend this book for anyone unfamiliar with the topic. It is an easy read and can be enjoyed and also a good informative book. It has many strong points throughout and has a very good historical analysis of animal experimentation, putting much emphasis in one essay on yellow fever and how it was cured.

This is an Amazing Book.......2002-08-14
I heartily recommend Why Animal Experimentation Matters. So often, arguments defending animal experimentation are cast in careful politically correct affirmations of a concern for the animals and a wish that scientists did not have to use them. Such apologies frequently ring with the dull thud of falsehood.
But the nine essays (including the introduction) in this book are heartless and pointed: Humans can do what they choose to animals. The authors accept this as gospel and then attempt to justify these personal and varied prejudices. Facts that get in the way are either ignored altogether, or else massaged into claims that are misleading or simply false.
Book editor, E.F. Paul makes the following claim in her introduction: "The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal Welfare Enforcement Report for Fiscal Year 1997 reported that 1,267,828 dogs, cats, primates, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits and farm animals were subjects of laboratory experiments in registered facilities. Dogs and cats now comprise less than 1 percent of U.S. laboratory animals, while mice, rats, and other rodents represent 80 to 90 percent." This is (intentionally?) misleading. Of the 1.3 million animals cited, dogs (75,429 used in FY 1997, according to the USDA report named above) and cats (26,091) make up closer to ten percent. No one has an inkling of the total number of animals used in U.S. laboratories. The 1.3 million cited excludes most of them from the data. Mice, rats, (perhaps 30 million combined according to industry estimates) birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates... the total number is many orders of magnitude greater than the number cited by E.F. Paul.
Misleading facts and claims aside, what sets this book apart is the theme running through every essay that the very least human interest is always more important than the very greatest animal interest. We are told by the vivisectors themselves, such as Zola Morgan, director of the NIH Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center, that oversight interferes with research and should be curtailed. We are told by pro-vivisectionist philosophers that the beauty created by new cosmetics is ample justification for blinding rabbits.
It is not true, as some have claimed, that the book is written at a junior high reading level. Such claims may be based on content that fails to measure up to the title's promise. People in favor of animal experimentation may be embarrassed by the authors' honesty and not like what they have to say, but the essays are generally clear and straightforward.
I believe that the authors are representative of many of those working in the labs today. Readers will find many windows into the minds and hearts of those who measure everything by what's in it for them. This is an amazing book.
does making a book "easier" make it better?.......2002-04-10
One reviewer praises the book because you don't have to know anything about science or ethics to understand it. Another reviewer critizes it because it's written at about a Jr. High level of understanding of biology, medical research, logic and ethics. Having read the book, I'd agree more with the second reviewer. The fact that the book is easy to read and doesn't require ANY background knowledge does not make the book better.
This book is just not very good. It is disappointing in many ways. It just doesn't engage the issues of the ethics or the science in a deep and careful way. Even those who think animal research is a good thing really should be able to admit this and think that there needs to be a better book that defends animal research. I guess they think they don't need to and maybe that's true, at least for now.
It sure would have been nice if they could have found a physician to write a chapter for the book: a perspective from someone that actually deals with sick people would have been good.
One thing the first positive reviewer forgot to mention in his praise of the philosopher R.G. Frey was this: Frey thinks that if you are going to allow animal experimentation, rationality requires that you be open to the possibility of allowing experimentation on "terminally defective" newborn babies and other "mentally challenged" human beings. He thinks you can't rationally defend the idea that there are things that rightly can be done to animals (such as research that causes pain and death) but can never rightly be done to any humans. Frey thinks that view can only be defended from a Judeo-Christian theistic perspective, which he rejects as unreasonable (or thinks there isn't good evidence to accept that there is a God). Frey's view is at least consistent, unlike most of the other moral views given in defense of animal research.

Super Book........2002-02-16
This is the best book on Traditional TKD, or Katate I have ever seen. Keep in mind, this is not Olympic style TKD of the 21st century, this is good old solid Ji Do Kwan, Tae Kwon Do. Master Cho covers things in this book that show TKD to be the "art" it is. Anyone can do the things in this book. It just takes time, and practice.
This book also shows that TKD does indeed have good, solid hand techniques, and defenses.
This book is NOT magic, and do not exspect any "tricks" to make you a master overnight. Master Cho has given a lot of information, and it works. All you need to do is practice!

The Korean Martial Arts Bible.......2000-11-11
this book is the ultamate book on free fighting and actual combat situation, it covers all grounds on the primary techniques needed to do either and it is very well compiled and written and done in an easy to understand way , you cant get better information on this subject anywhere
No better reference work available on the subject........1998-09-07
Outstanding demonstration and explanation of this highly popular style of karate which, moreso than most places great emphasis on foot technique. The text is easy to understand and its' thoroughness of detail and display of skill in technique make it second only to Jordan Roth's masterwork Black Belt Karate. It must be said that this book would probably not serve a novice student too well as there are some moves which could prove difficult to master, like the front and side-limbering kicks and the flying roundhouse kick. This book should perhaps be best viewed as a companion piece to Roth's as there are several techniques not covered in that book, such as the hook kick and the rising heel kick.Great emphasis is placed on sparring so I would say that it is absolutely essential to work with a partner when referring to this book.As one who enjoys the kicking techniques of karate this book definitely comes highly recommended.Class cover shot of a perfectly executed side thrust kick enhances this book's already considerable appeal and usefulness.

Good for beginners; lacks detail.......2005-04-18
I bought this book as I started TKD--its inexpensive price corresponded with my level of commitment. The book does an okay job of covering a wide array of basic concepts. It is definitely a beginner's guide. I'm now looking to buy a better tkd book.
What I found lacking are detailed explanations of why the techniques are the way they are. I did not like how the "secrets" are all put into one section at the end of each chapter and are quite general--not really secrets at all, but common sense. It would be better instead to include specific hints, explanations, and insights after presenting each technique. The amount of detail presented for each technique is no match for an instructor's attention. Sometimes the photo captions offer a little more detail, but other times the photos are confusing.
Great supplement for the beginner Tae Kwon Do student.......2004-12-24
I bought this book when I first started Tae Kwon Do and found it to be helpful in breaking down techniques step by step along with pictures. I practice Tae Kwon Do regularly and still occasionally look back at this book to review some of the small things in kicking techniques. This book includes sections on the history of Tae Kwon Do, the meaning of Tae Kwon Do (along with the meanings of the principles of Tae Kwon Do), kicking techniques, self defense, stretching, board breaking and more. I reviewed many other books before buying this one. I highly recommend this book for anyone new to Tae Kwon Do.
Good for beginners/intermediates. . ........2004-02-19
This is a great book if you're just getting started in TKD, and is probably better-suited to those not taking formal lessons. The sections on hand and foot techniques are clear and well-illustrated, but my major issue is with the extensive section on sparring and self-defense techniques. These may be good techniques but in your dojang you may well learn entirely different ones. In preparing for the red belt I have learned 30 one-steps, and I don't think a single one is in this book, although bits and pieces of them are. Obviously students will quickly learn more forms than Chon Ji, although it's nice for a review when you're just starting out.
This book is a great confidence-builder for the beginning student and is well-illustrated with useful photographs that clearly demonstrate techniques. At the same time, it is NOT just an album like so many martial arts books. Dr. Lawler has done a good job with this, and if you can only get one TKD book, this would be my suggestion.
THE OPERATIVE WORD IS "BEGINNERS".......2001-12-28
I had been searching for a comprehensive easy to follow guide and I have found it in Jennifer Lawler's "The Secrets of Tae Kwon Do: Principles and Techniques for Beginners." The secret is that it is a quide for beginners. That's me!
As defined, Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial arts of high kicks and spins. So it helps to have long legs. That's me! Already, that's two "that's me's" and I'm hooked.
I like the diciplines. Serve your lord with loyalty. Serve your parents with filial piety. Trust your friends. Never retreat from a battle. When taking life, be selective. I'm a lawyer. The last three diciplines apply in the courtroom just as easily as they do in martial arts.
I taught myself how to ski by reading a book. I never took a lesson in my life. I just read the book, went to the slopes, and skied.
With that new found confidence I thought the same of Tae Kwon Do. Get a book, practice, and then spin and kick. The book is great but you need coaching too. Because, as it turns out, Tae Kwon Do is much more difficult to learn than skiing is.
I think this is the best book of its kind on the market. For a beginner, like me, and for the intermediate that I hope to be some day. I recommend it.
A great reference for new students of Tae Kwon Do.......2001-06-04
This book is very useful for those who want to develop a better understanding of the basic Tae Kwon Do moves, and for those who want to practice their stances, kicks and punches between classes.
While there are other books, notably "Tae Kwon Do: The State of the Art," which provide more insight into the martial art's philosophies and have more comprehensive coverage of the Tae Kwon Do forms, I found Lawler's book to be near-perfect for a beginner like me. There are many pictures and a detailed explanation for each move, making them easy to follow (but not necessarily easy to do!) The book's large size is a plus, as the pictures don't have to compete with the text on each page. And while the use of the word "Secrets" in the title is a bit misleading, Lawler does stock each section with useful tips that help the reader better understand the moves.
I'd prefer if the book were organized differently - I'd find it more useful if the basic moves (stances/punches/kicks) were grouped together, with the intermediate moves in their own group. Instead, Lawler follows basic moves with intermediate ones of the same type, which forces a lot of unnecessary page turning for beginners who want to get a firm grasp of the basics before tackling more advanced moves. She also puts flexibility drills in a separate chapter at the end of the book, though they would make much more sense as part of the warm-up/stretching chapter. I'm tempted to unbind the book and reorganize the pages in a three-ring binder!
Finally, it should be pointed out that not all students will study the form that she presents (Chon-ji), even though Lawler asserts that it is the first form that a TKD student learns. The form you learn will depend upon your school's associated governing body (WTF or ITF), and may be somewhat different from that presented here. Still, that's a small part of the book, and most of it will prove to be incredibly useful to the TKD newcomer. I'm sure that the basics presented in this book will help any TKD student progress well beyond white-belt level.

Customer Reviews:
great reference book.......2007-03-21
This is a wonderful reference tool. It's very understandable, well layed out with many good examples of grammar usage. This book is a great supplement for classroom or self study.
Impressive Book.......2007-03-10
I was very pleased with this book. It was well organized and it included all the important rules of Norwegian grammer. Definitely recommended.
The best "teach yourself" book I've ever read.......2007-02-20
I'm learning Norwegian and this is the most useful book I've consulted. There are people who need examples to understand things. I don't. That's why this book is the perfect guide for me and people with a system similar to mine. The theoretical explanations are both deep and plain, there are only a few essential examples and, above all, there are no pictures in it!
Another detail that I've loved of this book is that it revises basic grasps of general grammar, for those who don't remember what a deponent verb or a predicative object is.
If you want to have a solid basis of Norwegian, you can trust this book.
very helpful.......2006-03-24
I enjyed stydying norwegian because i have this close to norway and the people. The book showed me more and more about norwegian, I do recommend for this book for whom wants to be an excillent norwegian speaker!
Nicely done.......2005-07-10
Let me start by saying I came from a beginning Norwegian language class where the textbook was entirely in Norwegian; the index, instructions, EVERYthing. Does that make sense to speak a language to someone who doesn't know it and is trying to learn? I understand the theory behind it, but it's just not practical. So naturally I looked for outside help.
I found that help with this book by Janus. He has a great way of laying out, in an easy-to-read-and-follow format, just EXACTLY how something is said and WHY it's said that way.
------------
The Format:
------------
Each area covers every aspect of formal and informal grammar starting with a paragraph or two about what a given funtion or part of speech means (ex: The present participle are adjective forms based on verbs such as the "ing" in thinking)
Then you'll get examples and the book backs EVERYthing up with its English translation right next to them for immediate reference and confirmation.
What struck me about this book was that you don't even have to be a student of the Norwegian language and you could still thumb through it in order to see how Norwegians speak, just out of curiosity. It also has several sections for reference like numbers, a healthy list of verbs and their tenses, and even a section listing the 100 most popular names for males and females. Did you know that Kari is a popular Norwegian name and it's actually pronounced CAHD-ee? Cool.
