    Book Description

Historically, the fields of exchange-rate economics and microstructure finance have progressed independently of each other. Recent interaction, however, has given rise to a microstructure approach to exchange rates. This book focuses on the economics of financial information and how microstructure tools help to clarify the types of information most relevant to exchange rates.

The microstructure approach views exchange rates from the perspective of the trading room, the place where exchange rates are actually determined. Emphasizing information economics over institutional issues, the approach departs from three unrealistic assumptions common to previous approaches: that all information relevant to exchange rates is publicly available, that all market participants are alike in their goals or in how they view information, and that how trading is organized is inconsequential for exchange rates. The book shows how exchange-rate behavior previously thought to be particularly puzzling can be explained using the microstructure approach. It contains a combination of theoretical and empirical work.

    Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Making Change Irresistible by Ken Hultman.......2001-10-29

There are a lot of books on change. It takes a lot for a book about change to stand out from the growing crowd of books on this increasingly important topic. Making Change Irresistible by Ken Hultman stands tall. The book starts right off by focusing on the primary reason why leaders have difficulty in making change happen in organizations-the failure to really understand human beings. He says that leaders who have crunched the numbers, laid out meticulous plans, and positioned organizational resources are often surprised by resistance and tend to see something malevolent or irrational in the resistance, rather than a natural human response that can be addressed in ways that do make change irresistible. My favorite chapter is the one on the practical ways of building trust-a pivotal topic that seems to be left out of most of the other books on change. I also appreciated the liberal sprinkling of self-assessment inventories and checklists because they made the book so specific and practical.

5 out of 5 stars A first class behavioural guide to change management.......1999-12-08

"This book is intended to serve as a strategic and tactical manual for battling resistance to organizational change." Covers the key concepts in understanding human behaviour and change and provides tools for diagnosing and overcoming resistance. First class. It uses a simple but powerful framework and offers several useful 'instruments' to diagnose core issues in gaining acceptance of change. The book is intended for anyone whose job it is to lead others through change. It is a useful, clear and well-organised resource and the instruments contained in it are also clear and well explained.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-12-04

"Making Change Irresistible" is an engaging book with proactive tools and effective strategies that can help executives and managers alike through the murky waters of organizational transition. This book is the most comprehensive work available on the subject of organizational resistance to change. It led me to discover and rethink my assumptions about corporate change resistance. It presents a fresh perspective on a topic of concern to all of today's organizations, and is applicable to both academicians and practitioners. The Change Opinion Survey and The Psychological Need Fulfillment Inventory provide practical methods of preventing, diagnosing, and minimizing the impact of resistance to change in organizations. Both tools are essential for anyone in the process of managing change. Through an in-depth analysis of human behaviour and with techniques that promote personal growth, this book enables readers to become adept at diagnosing resistance to change. The book also helps readers to develop a more positive attitude toward change, while building a concrete plan of action to overcome resistance to change. In short, "Making Change Irresistible" is a must-read for those who study change, and for anyone whose job it is to lead others through the challenge of organizational change.

5 out of 5 stars Must reading for persons or organizations undergoing change.......1999-10-29

Ken Hultman has written a brilliant and very practical book on dealing with change. His work on motivation updates Maslow and concentrates on ones sense of worth. The change tests and exercises can be used directly and will assist any organization undergoing change. The work on values is also brilliant and gets to the heart of the matter instead of working around the edges.

This book explains in simple language why and how people get their needs met and how that affects change processes. This book is must reading for any organization that truly wants to change and needs to understand the process.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I have seen on how employees can change.......1999-10-18

Ken's background includes: PhD in Counseling Psychology; staff and line manager; university professor; counselor for individuals, families and groups; and trainer and organizational development consultant to 100 Fortune 500 companies, including major effort with General Electric.

He provides the best analysis of the reasons change is so hard (for most humans), and a fairly good prescription of what can be done to "make change irresistible". The following are a few of the concepts from his book:

Unmet Needs table spans pages 24-27 Unmet Need for Mastery Unmet Need for a Sense of Meaning and Purpose Unmet Need for Acceptance Unmet Need for Respect Each unmet need is followed by 10-20 Symptoms, Consequence, and Potential Solutions

His unmet needs survey encourages a quick assessment of the group and individual attitudes toward change. 60 Statements are assigned a 4, 3, 2, 1, or 0: 4 = strongly disagree down to 0 = Strongly agree People in my organization: Expect too little from themselves Malign each other's character Judge each other on the basis of personal characteristics Disagree about goals/methods Lack opportunities to use their skills Withhold information from each other Discriminate against others Disagree with each other about priorities Lack the necessary knowledge or understanding Try to make each other look bad Subtly make others feel excluded Etc.

He states that there are 4 combinations of Willingness and Ability to Change (pg 97) 1 - Both willing and able to change = best 2 - Able but unwilling to change 3- Willing but unable to change 4 - Both unwilling and unable to change = worst

His strategies for overcoming resistance span pg 171-175 Establishing a positive climate Encourage and interest in improvement Show people how overcoming resistance to change can help them Help people increase their competence Involve people in decisions Cultivate value for teamwork Don't react emotionally Avoid inadvertent mistakes Concentrate on factors within your control

The explanation of his strategies span pages 181-4 15 Strategies aimed at Thinking 10 Strategies aimed at Feelings 12 Strategies aimed at Deciding 10 Strategies aimed at Doing

He has 5-10 strategies for each way of Overcoming the Common Causes of Resistance (pg 188) Which depend on the current their beliefs: They believe their needs are being met already They believe the change will make it harder for them to meet their needs They believe the costs outweigh the benefits They believe the change is unnecessary to avoid or escape a negative situation They believe the change process was handled improperly They believe the change will fail They believe the change is inconsistent with their values

          Book Description

The first edition of Mark Ptashne's 1986 book describing the principles of gene regulation in phage lambda became a classic in both content and form, setting a standard of clarity and precise prose that has rarely been bettered. This edition is a reprint of the original text, together with a new chapter updating the story to 2004. Among the striking new developments are recent findings on long-range interactions between proteins bound to widely separated sites on the phage genome, and a detailed description of how gene activation works.

5 out of 5 stars a classic of scientific exposition.......2005-08-19

I found out about this unassuming little book in Sean Carroll's
"Endless forms most beautiful" and was delighted. When I first started reading it, a stranger who saw me with it smiled and I soon found out why. It can be read by anyone with a modest scientific education (little more than high school) but it takes you up to the frontiers of research on gene regulation. Readers who remember the way "Scientific American" used to cover molecular biology in 1960's through the '80's (or have read reprints from that era) will appreciate the highly visual style and the clear prose. The genetic switch
in question determines whether the genes of a virus that infects a bacterial cell will quietly integrate themselves into the bacterial genome and be copied along with the bacteria's genes each time the cell divides or use the cell's machinery to make many copies of itself, quickly destroying the cell in the process. If you are like me you'll be fascinated to learn how this switch works and about the experiments that revealed its secrets.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book .......2007-05-20

I bought this book after my first canyoneering one day course. I wanted to have a book handy to review what I had learnt, and this was the only one I could find of the sort.

Overall, it is a very good book that goes through all the steps of rappelling, with many good pictures throughout. There is a high emphasis on safety, and it was interesting to read about some things that had not been mentioned in the course (such as why the "American Triangle" is such a bad setup)

Still, I would not use it alone to learn how to rappel. Besides the obvious value of having an instructor, the book was also very short, and left some things out, such as how to use a Piranha device (popular with canyoneers) and modern mechanical descender backups, like the Petzl Shunt.

As tools are always evolving, this book will not give you the complete picture both in terms of technology, and also what techniques might be considered better form today.

            5 out of 5 stars Very functional.......2006-05-17

This small 3.5 x 5.5" phrasebook is very concise and well organized, easy to hold in one hand, and the best I have seen on the market. There is a brief help section in the beginning on how to use the phrasebook. It is easy on the eyes using color, markers/dividers, varying fonts/colors and a 2-way dictionary to answer all your needs to a trip to Poland. The pages are of a thicker paper so it is easy to flip through without ripping pages or sticking pages. To me it answers every question and word I could think of in this almost 300 page book, with blank pages in the back of the book for notes. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Even more content than title indicates!.......2005-04-16

This neat little book is much more than just a phrasebook and two-way dictionary! There is a great "chapter" on pronunciation and another great "chapter" on basic grammar. Those two sections are worth the price of the book. They effectively present what some entire books on learning Polish fail to do.

The book is arranged really nicely, too. The content groupings (chapters) and sub groupings (sections) are great for study and quick lookup. The groupings allowed me to see patterns in the language that are just not apparent in my other books.

I have numerous little English-Polish communication books and guides; but, if I could take just one to carry around Poland, it would surely be this one.

4 out of 5 stars Good starting point.......2004-03-04

I bought this book a few days ago knowing zero Polish. I like this book as it does a great job with phonetical spelling, making it very easy to figure out how to pronounce the words. It's also a good pocket size that you can take with you anywhere if you have a few extra moments to practice on the bus or eating a burrito or something. My goal with this book is to get something that was useful and just allow me to just get an initial foothold in the language that I'll supplement with a more in-depth course. In that regard, it's been great. I already have the basic phrases down. Plus, it's cheap!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent for the Stupid Tourist.......2003-01-11

I brought this book to Poland with me, and it proved invaluable to someone like me who only spoke "stupid tourist" Polish. I went to the country knowing virtually nothing about the language, and the book proved invaluable in making simple, stilted communication. Without the book I would have been completely lost. The phonetic pronunciation proves invaluable for a language like Polish where the words don't sound like they look (to a stupid tourist like me).

My one complaint was the occasional presentation of very important words with supplemental information about why the word is important, but without any phonetic pronunciation. The words are essentially useless if you don't know how to say them, and in Polish, that's pretty much all the time. Other than these occasional oversights, the book does a pretty good job of guiding you through the language for basic survival.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The valuable inventing logbook.......2000-07-27

I have purchased and used The Idea Logbook on the development of numerous product inventions that my company has been (and is) developing.

This book offers substantial information about the overall inventing process of which I have greatly appreciated, but there are two valuable assets to it that is imperative in developing a new product.

The first one is its ability to aid me in monitoring all my costs, time and material. As an electronic assembly manufacturer, this is essential in determining production and marketing figures.

The second factor, it is a logbook that provides me with the ability to continually add additional writings, drawings, data and support documentation that ALWAYS occurs during the development process. This is vital for the protection of the ideas as it confirms dates and key development information.

I will continue using The Idea Logbook for each one of my current and future ideas ( I use a book for each idea) and recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who is looking to develop an invention.
