Customer Reviews:
Reknown and experienced writers.......2001-07-07
This book is an excellent effort to compile several and relevant cases where the New Institutional Economics theory is explained through practical cases. The way in which each one of these cases is exposed, permits to see clearly the elements of this new economic thoery in the real world. Three characteristcs are prominent in this book. One, the cases show very diverse situations, which facilitates the understanding of this new theory in varied contexts. Two, in spite of that chapers are are short, which permits a easy and quick reading, they are supported in deep jobs of investigacion carried out by the authors. Three, the authors of this edition have different specific interpetaciones of this New Institutional Economics theory, which does a very valuable reading.
Related to this book, there is "Institutions, Institutional Change and Economic Performance by Douglas North, or Colonialism and Underdevelopment in East Africa : The Politics of Economic Change, 1919-1939 by E.A. Brett
Book Description
Let science set the stage
The most valuable ally a change agent could want. Author Edwin Nevis and his coauthors leverage breakthrough behavioral and social science research to arrive at seven surefire methods for investing workers with an all-new mindset. The results: a powerful strategy for influencing behavior, minimizing resistance to change, and sustaining an organization that is continuously adapting and self-renewing. Filled with examples of both successful and failed change efforts -- and with numerous case studies from companies including Motorola and Xerox -- this is one how-to on effecting change you should definitely include in your arsenal.
Customer Reviews:
Definitely worth reading.......2002-02-26
This a really good read. The authors begin from the premise that organizations are now more than ever forced to operate in a climate of change. Their capacity for transformation is therefore increasingly essential for their survival. The authors outline seven strategies for achieving such a transformation: coercion, persuasive communication, participation, structural rearrangement, role modelling, extrinsic rewards and expectancy.
The different chapters are presented and organised in a readily accessible style, and their argument has a powerful intuitive appeal because of the way it resonates with many of our commonplace, day-to-day experiences of organisational culture and change.
If the book has a weakness it is one common to this genre - namely that it deals much more effectively with what should be done than how it should be done. I find their seven strategies much more useful as a diagnostic or descriptive tool - helping to understand change efforts as merely one of several possible approaches - rather than as a prescriptive blueprint for how change can be implemented.

Book Description
* Comprehensive and authoritative assessment of the prospects for agriculture and food supply throughout the world from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
* Examines all forms of agriculture and acquaculture and the economic, technological and environmental factors affecting them.
* An indispensable reference for agriculturalists, economists, policy-makers, development and environment professionals worldwide.
A detailed assessment of the long-term outlook for the world's food supplies, nutrition and agriculture from the world's foremost agricultural research institute. It examines outcomes from 2015 to 2030, covering supply and demand for all the major agricultural commodities and sectors, including fisheries and forestry. From this analysis, it examines the implications for trade, for nutrition and for undernourishment, and the impact of future production on the environment and resource base, and how technology can contribute to more sustainable development.
One main finding is that, without a massive effort to improve development and relieve food security problems, there is little chance of meeting the target of halving the number of undernourished people by 2015. Agriculture is crucial to development, especially where it employs a majority of the population, and additional resources will have to be mobilized.
Book Description
From ancient cave paintings of honey bee nests to modern science's richly diversified investigation of honey bee biology and its applications, the human imagination has long been captivated by the mysterious and highly sophisticated behavior of this paragon among insect societies. In the first broad treatment of honey bee biology to appear in decades, Mark Winston provides rare access to the world of this extraordinary insect.
In a bright and engaging style Winston probes the dynamics of the honey bee's social organization. He recreates for us the complex infrastructure of the nest, describes the highly specialized behavior of workers, queens, and drones, and examines in detail the remarkable ability of the honey bee colony to regulate its functions according to events within and outside the nest. Winston integrates into his discussion the results of recent studies, bringing into sharp focus topics of current bee research. These include the exquisite architecture of the nest and its relation to bee physiology; the intricate division of labor and the relevance of a temporal caste structure to efficient functioning of the colony; and, finally, the life-death struggles of swarming, supersedure, and mating that mark the reproductive cycle of the honey bee.
The Biology of the Honey Bee not only reviews the basic aspects of social behavior, ecology, anatomy, physiology, and genetics, it also summarizes major controversies in contemporary honey bee research, such as the importance of kin recognition in the evolution of social behavior and the role of the well-known dance language in honey bee communication. Thorough, well-illustrated, and lucidly written, this book will for many years be a valuable resource for scholars, students, and beekeepers alike.
Customer Reviews:
What We Know about Honey Bees.......2005-06-16
This book is a review of current (as of 1987) research about honey bees. Topics covered include: origin and evolution, anatomy, development and nutrition, nest architecture activities of worker bees, pheromones, communication and orientation, collection of food, reproduction, mating, and differences between temperate an tropical honey bees. The book includes numerous black-and-white illustrations, a long-list of references, an author index, and a subject index.
Readers will come away from this book with a much greater understanding of these vital insects, encompassing everything from range to communication to gender roles. The book is written in clear language that is accessible to general readers as well as undergraduate students. Interested readers can use the cited references to learn about specific topics in greater detail.
A sense of wonder.......2000-12-14
I picked up this book in a store and bought it out of idle curiousity, as I am neither an entomologist, biologist or beekeeper. Its content amazed me and spurred me to return to reading general interest science books, an area I had largely shunned after leaving university.
Apart from the fascinating content, the book wins because of the author's superb style. While sacrificing nothing in the way of content (at least to this nonspecialist's eye) he never indulged in technical jargon, making the book accessible to any interested person.

Book Description
Honey Bees: Estimating the Environmental Impact of Chemicals is an updated account of the different strategies for assessing the ecotoxicity of xenobiotics against these social insects, which play a key role in both ecology and agriculture. In addition to the classical acute laboratory test, semi-field cage tests and full field funnel tests, new tests based mainly on behavioral responses are clearly described for the first time. Information on the direct and indirect effects of radionuclides, heavy metals, pesticides, semi-volatile organic compounds and genetically modified plants on honey bees is also presented.

Book Description
The familiar European hive bee, Apis mellifera, has long dominated honey bee research. But in the last 15 years, teams in China, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand began to shift focus to the indigenous Asian honey bees. Benjamin Oldroyd, well known for his work on the genetics and evolution of worker sterility, has teamed with Siriwat Wongsiri, a pioneer of the study of bees in Thailand, to provide a comparative work synthesizing the rapidly expanding Asian honey bee literature. After introducing the species, the authors review evolution and speciation, division of labor, communication, and nest defense. They underscore the pressures colonies face from pathogens, parasites, and predators--including man--and detail the long and amazing history of the honey hunt. This book provides a cornerstone for future investigations on these species, insights into the evolution across species, and a direction for conservation efforts to protect these keystone species of Asia's tropical forests.

Informative Research & Explanation.......2006-06-02
The research on killer bees has advanced a tiny bit more since this book was written. However, this is a great explanation of the Africanized Honey Bee. It dispells a lot of myths and explains a lot of truths since this was written by the person who actually did the field research. I would love to see more research and books written on this topic so that the public would get the correct information about these creatures and we could realize the beneficial traits these bees may offer.
Great Book Explaining the "Killer Bee" phenomenon.......2000-09-28
This book ranks as one of the best books I have read on the subject of Africanized Honey Bees. (aka Killer Bees) This book is easily understood by the layperson, yet full of great data for the serious student of this exotic pest. From Texas to California, we have to learn how to live with this creature - it is not going away! I strongly recommend this book. While I have been teaching classes on the subject of Africanized Honey Bees for the better part of a decade, I still keep this book handy as a reference, and recommend it to my students.

Book Description
Honey Bee Biology and Beekeeping explains bee biology, what bees do, and provides the tools which make it possible for an individual to successfully manage bee colonies. The author has concentrated on the "why" aspects of bee biology so that the reader understands "when" and "how" certain things must be done to colonies. Bees and beekeeping are explained in a manner meaningful to a person who lacks an extensive background or knowledge of biology. Yet the author has not oversimplified bee biology to the point where it is meaningless to the serious beekeeper or informed biologist.

A definite must read. Two thumbs up!.......2000-04-12
This is one of the best books on the subject of bees and beekeeping that I have found. It's coverage of honey bee history, biology and management has made it part of my short collection. Thanks
Honey Bee Biology and Beekeeping.......2000-04-04
This excellent book mirrors the teachings of the author, that one must understand the biology of the honey bee in order to comprehend its behavior. This book not only encompasses facts but also provides topics for further discussion, thus leading to further inquiry into the fascinating world of honey bees.

Book Description
For every living organism, the cycle of rest and rejuvenation is a necessity of life. So relax, put your feet up, and enjoy
Sleep and Rest in Animals.
Explore the world of insects where a body at rest is usually treated as a meal. Many insects use camouflage -- looking like moss, bark, twigs, leaves, even bird droppings -- to avoid predators during naps. Other insects, such as the sulfur butterfly, simply roll over and play dead when they need a little rest.
In the diverse world of fish, amphibians, and reptiles, sleep becomes more complex. Discover why crocodiles sleep with their mouths wide open. Or how snakes get any shut-eye when they lack any eyelids.
Birds employ an array of sleep techniques. The albatross is capable of sleeping while in flight. Similarly, penguins manage to sleep and swim at the same time.
All mammals share the same sleep and rest characteristics: yawning, dreaming, and REM. However great variations exist among species. Some sleep standing, others while hanging. The shrew suffers from insomnia. And the dolphin seems to rest one brain hemisphere at a time - staying half-awake to avoid drowning.
Written for a wide audience, Lacrampe consulted with scientists from around the world to ensure scientific accuracy. Abundantly illustrated with vivid, close-up photographs,
Sleep and Rest in Animals offers a unique perspective on wildlife ranging from mollusks to primates.
Customer Reviews:
Very good book.......2006-07-11
This is a wonderful book for children and adults of all ages, full of fun and informational facts about the resting habits of all sorts of animals. Filled with vivid and memorable photographs, this book presents a wealth of information and inspires conversation with little-known facts about animal behavior.
Sleep and Rest in Animals by Corine Lacrampe.......2005-05-10
Do butterflies sleep? Do snakes dream? Corine Lacrampe offers a reader-friendly introduction to the wonders of animal sleep. You'll discover the resting posture of moths and the one-eye-open "half-asleep" ability of birds and dolphins. Lush photos invite you into the bubbly bed chambers of parrot fish and the night nests of chimpanzees. Lions and koalas may yawn, but you won't as you enjoy this page-turning investigation of sleep.

interesting and has great pics, but not very detailed.......2003-06-02
This book, like the title says, is all about sleep and rest in animals. In the foreward, the author says that the meaning of "sleep" will be stretched a bit for the purposes of the book, so there's a lot of info on kinds of "sleep" that some might not consider to be sleep. The chapter on insects is a good example of this. I like that the author often notes areas where scientists disagree. Still, if you're looking for detailed information on sleep in various animals (insects, reptiles, birds, and mammals), this would not be a good book for you. The information in this book seems to be intended more to give you a general idea about sleep and rest in these animals, with occaisional interesting details. It's a great place to start if you don't have anything specific you want to know, but it's probably not what you're looking for if you already know a lot about the subject. However, this book does have excellent pictures, and I would recommend it just for those. Every picture is full color, and some take up two whole pages.
Book Description
Noted photographer and author, Jim Schollmeyer, now puts his talents to tying nymphs. More than just a book of nymph patterns, this book takes a different approach. Realizing that many nymph patterns have evolved from variations on a handful of basic designs and tying techniques, Jim has written on these evolutions and how your repertoire of flies can be broadened by seeing how a variety of modifications can be worked into fly designs to produce the desired appearance or behavior.
With his crisp step-by-step photos and concise text, Jim Schollmeyer has done it again, another great fly-tying technique book.

Save time and hassles with Royce's tips, dubbing with WOOL!.......2004-04-13
Wow, this book cuts to the chase and helped me pick up fly tying in no time! The word "Practical" in the title says it all! Pragmatic and Practical techniques for sure. Buy his two DVDs too. They show you first-hand! Royce sure knows his stuff, and the beauty of dubbing with wool will have you tying flies faster than anybody using animal fur. The secret is in carding the wool. I went out to a department store and picked up two carding brushes for $20 total. My wool cost me all of $8.00 from a sheep-farmer and should last for at least 1000 flies. Wool makes dry flies look and work even better than fur-dubbed flies.
Wool Dubbing Fast and Simple.......2002-12-23
The photography of this book is worth the price alone. Royce's techniques are simple yet useful to novice and expert alike. His wool dubbing method is so simple and quick I have used nothing else since. You can master this wool dubbing quickly and take all the work out of nymphs to drys. Good stories as well.

This latest annual edition of the classic writer's directory provides everything working writers need to find the most receptive publishers, editors and agents for their work. Each entry presents an overview of the publisher, including its history and current lines, followed by the names of specific editors, their areas of interest, and complete contact information. It also features listings for over 150 top literary agencies, along with their agents, what they represent and how to contact them. Finally, this important reference includes expert guidance on such valuable topics as how to pitch a book, prepare a winning query and proposal, negotiate a contract, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
A Helping Hand I found.......2007-06-11
I needed guidance after writing my fictional novel, The Skye in June, and this book help soothe my fears that I would never be published. Suggestions and examples of how to write a proposal, inquiry letter and so much industry information are included. Ease your worries if you are planning on being published - or self publish, and read this book.
Book is good, publishing biz is bad.......2006-11-20
After reading several revews, I can say that the problem is not Jeff Herman's book, but the publishing business itself. My comments are really about non-fiction but there is some truth in this for fiction writers as well. I used his book to send query letters, found an agent, my agent sold my book--but the advance is so tiny I can't afford to write the book. I'm single, I'm not going to inherit anything, I'm not a trust fund kid, and my book was apparently deemed less important than a celebrity tell-all. My advice? Be smart if you want to earn a living writing. Follow the example of that writer who spent FIFTEEN YEARS writing a bioghraphy of J.P. Morgan because her advance was so generous. And she lived off of the advance in New York City, no les! Why did she write about J.P.? Because she admired him? Had some experience in investing? Knew him personally? No, no, no. She wrote about him because all the Wall Street guys who will buy the book hoping to become rich like J.P. did are the reason her advance was so large. Publishing is a business, plain and simple.
Help for those who might be helped .......2005-11-11
This guide will be bought by far more people who will not be helped by it , than who will be helped by it. The great majority including myself will look for the magical way to find the agent, the editor who will want and accept their writing. They will learn the right way to do this, the right way to write a proposal. But having learned all that they will probably not succeed in having their manuscript published.
Beyond this , those who can be eternally grateful to Jeff Herman for providing the formula for success, are those who actually will have a book published. For the overwhelming majority of them this will not bring honor, fame, wealth in anything at all like their secret hope and expectation. If not publishing is a disappointment, then publishing may even be a bigger one.
Nonetheless, we all live by hope. This book is clearly written, instructs the fledgling writer on the way to make it in the world.
It is one of the most popular of these guides, and has helped make at least one person's fortune i.e. Jeff Herman.
Take it from a best-selling author of 12 books: You can use this book!.......2005-08-30
Every year or two I buy an updated copy of Mr. Herman's book, and it's always a great investment.
I sell most of my books to publishers, directly. Perhaps 6 of my 12 books were sold to individuals I found in Herman's editions.
Herman's book provides me with an up-to-date listing of editors who can acquire my titles, along with their phone numbers, and topical interests.
I can't tell you how much time his research saves me, especially when I'm shopping an idea for a new project.
If you want to sell something, it pays to have a great, "smart" list, and that's what Herman's book provides.
And you should know this--I sell my books by telephone, first, and then follow-up with written material--contrary to Herman's advice. But then you'd expect as much from the best-selling author of REACH OUT & SELL SOMEONE and YOU CAN SELL ANYTHING BY TELEPHONE!
--Dr. Gary S. Goodman--

Customer Reviews:
Better than his other books..........2007-09-16
This book is excellent if you want to learn everything about painitng. It does not really cover drawing technique, be forewarned. This is his best book, do not buy "art class" or the "artist's color manual" if you chose to buy this book. Basically, he's complied both books into one.
This book really does cover all materials:
-paper and it's practical uses in concerns to specific mediums
-brushes and their practical uses in concerns to mediums
-Mediums: oil, gouche, egg tempra, watercolor, acrylic, chroma, pastels, charcol, conte crayon, ink (both traditional and modern), etc...
-Mixing media [not to be confused w/color mediums]: linseed oil, turpentine, acrylic mediums (matte, gel, etc.), watercolor mediums, etc...
It does have the same sections in "Art Class" like "where do I start?" etc. It takes you through starting from still life up to portraiture and beyond in this book. It has an additional area of subject matter which is about imagined subject matter.
Overall, it's an excellent reference book, contains good advice on how to go about starting a new medium, and allows for creativity in using mediums by explaining how they work, advantages & disadvantages, starter pallet colors, and permanance.
I would have given it 5 stars if it hadn't claimed to be a drawing technique book...you need a foundation in drawing before attempting this book.
Aptly named Complete ...........2007-04-11
This book covers just about everything, but is more informative on mediums other than oil painting. But it does give helpful tips that I had used previously, without realizing it was a standard technique used by fellow artists, but now I see why I've used them! For somebody that wants to do everything from the ground up, including making their own oil paint, then this is the book to own! Provides more instructional guidance than most other books I've seen/bought. Better artist's examples and more professional results with more advanced instructions than most other publications.
A guide to the many new art materials on the market.......2006-04-27
If you're an artist seeking the basics of how to set up a studio and use professional methods in a range of media, THE NEW ARTIST'S MANUAL: THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO PAINTING AND DRAWING MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES is for you. There are so many new materials on the market today that there's an ever-present need for a comprehensive coverage of them: THE NEW ARTIST'S MANUAL provides such depth in surveying paper and paint choices, pros and cons of controlling output under different conditions, experimenting with materials and textures, and much more. An outstanding guide aspiring artists will want to look it - and it's packed with color examples on every page.
Great Book, Lousy Binding.......2006-01-13
This is truly a useful and helpful book in explaining not just techniques, but materials: their pros, cons, and inherent challenges in use. But the binding should be much better. Chronicle Books has a history of putting out decent books with cheap and/or non-durable binding, which does not hold up well with repeated use. The spine cracks easily and then you have to be careful from then on to make certain that sections don't become loose. This is not good for a book designed for repeated reference and study.
