Senior marketing executive Elliott Ettenberg argues that traditional marketing techniques are outdated relics from the far-off Old Economy and in this post-9/11 world, we've already left the New Economy behind. So with reaching its public still vital to any business's survival, what's a 21st-century company to do? In The Next Economy, Ettenberg sees the economy changing to one "that will be characterized by a huge withdrawal of customer spending, a polarization of North American demand, an exponential increase in demands for service and a consequent shift in business priorities from satisfying shareholders to delighting customers." To meet this new economic environment, Ettenberg proposes a four-pronged strategy that includes a commitment to "segment and target customers in terms of their values, associations and loyalties;" focus on the "fewer but better customers;" substitute the old four Ps of marketing, product, place, price, and promotion, with the four new Rs, relationships, retrenchment, relevancy, and reward; and develop innovative comarketing arrangements that help expand opportunities and lower costs. With his solid grasp of the past and credible vision for the future, Ettenberg lays out a thought-provoking vision of the 21st-century marketplace that any business executive would do well to consider. --Howard Rothman

Customer Reviews:
an amazing book for futuren economy!.......2005-03-14
This book clearly reveals the secret for the upcoming economy trend that most individuals and enterprises still cannot figure out. 4P concept is no longer effective for current global need.
As China is entering the game, global economy is becoming chaotic and more unpredictable, only 4R concept (relationship, relevancy, retrenchment and rewards) can help those wise bueinss entities to survive or growth. In fact, most of the old concept oriented businesses will soon fade and go into history.
I study I-Ching, the most treasurous ancient Chinese wisdom from 5000 years ago. If for me to adopt its concept, our economy is situated in the decending, downtrend, shrinking stage, same to our civilization, due to the worsening ethics, environment...etc. However, thing dies for the reborn, human being is heading towards this inevitable progress of life.
All people should start early and behave right to survive in this global economy turbulance and Mr. Ettenberg's wisdom can be one of the good references!
Escapee from a time warp?.......2002-11-09
This book is puzzling. On the one hand, it opens with an interesting analysis of contemporary demographic trends. That analysis is, to my eye, the most useful part of the book. Surprisingly, limited attention is given to how younger age cohorts, even one that represents nearly as much of the US population as the Boomers, are entering the high product demand phase the Boomers are exiting. This cohort represents an excititing opportunity for marketers that is basically ignored.
The book asserts that the 5Ps are no longer relevant. I interpret the provided analysis to suggest instead that the failure resides in the inability of many companies to design effective marketing strategy.
The discussion of "want based" marketing appears to have been written 20 years ago, put into deep storage, and just escaped from its cryogenic vault. The notion of marketing to consumer "wants" rather than "needs" has been a fixture of principles of marketing texts for at least 20 years. The advocay of VALs - as a methodology useful for illuminating consumer "wants" -- is also about 20 years old. SRI just introduced VALS-III to remedy shortcomings of VALS-II. Ettenberg proposes an update to the time proven 5Ps (or 5Cs, depending on how you prefer to express them). At the core, Ettenberg seems to be trying to reposition the core of marketing as relationship management. That, too, is a standard feature of contemporary marketing principles texts. Further, the book emphasizes marketing of traditional tangible goods (e.g., bread). More contemporary value offerings -- such as services or transformations -- receive limited attention. This is surprising given the demographic analysis with which the book opens. Could the predicted decline in Boomer consumption of conventional goods merely reflect increasing consumption of services and transformations?
Rather Chilling Economic Portrait of the Future.......2002-08-25
Ettenberg is not Orwell's equal when it comes to writing a classic dystopia, but that is not to blame Ettenberg.
Ettenberg's idea is simple--the old ways that dominated much of the 20th century are outdated, the "new" economy ideas have vanished since 9/11, and what is to come is something different, a paradigm shift.
The focus will transition from shareholders to customers (this is new? Hasn't a mantra been satisfying and keeping the customer?) In fact, forget the mass market, Ettenberg argues. Go for that one niche. Oh, and rich and poor in the U.S. will resemble the Third World.
Guerrilla PR: Wired by Michael Levine also preaches how to reach consumers in the new age, but hardly portrays the darkness that Ettenberg preaches like a fundamentalist Baptist preacher full of fire and brimstone.
I take comfort in the belief that no individual knows the future, including Ettenberg. While his work makes for a powerful read, I find the full implications of his words are chilling.
Highly Recommended!.......2002-02-09
Elliott Ettenberg offers a wealth of new tools and strategies that you can apply to your business. His focus is on marketing, but not in any traditional sense. Instead, he analyzes how the technological advances of the 1990s have altered the competitive landscape and proposes an inventive and practical list of post-New Economy business practices. We [...] strongly recommend this book not only to marketing professionals, but also to anyone charged with developing business strategy.
Best Marketing Book for Students.......2002-01-29
I am a student in Marketing at Queens, and I have never read a more comprehensible and insightful book then "The Next Economy". Ettenberg writes in a fashion different from every other business book that I have read. The book is great because it is not boring or repetitive. The author has something to say, and he says it clearly and in a concise manner. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand what the future has in store for marketing, and it is a must-have for all marketing students.

A must read for think-tank practicioners and managers.......2005-04-05
This book is written by Dr. Raymond Struyk, a senior fellow at the Urban Institute, a leading public policy think-tank based in the United States. It is based on his experience as a technical adviser to several policy think tanks in the Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union and is written because there has been no publication on think-tank management before this book was published.
Some of the books' major recommendations are the following:
The use of incentives should be encouraged to motivate researchers that have made significant accomplishments for the think-tank and to maintain their interests to continue working for the think-tank. The incentives could be both in cash and non-cash forms, such as: sponsorship to attend training courses and international conferences abroad, opportunities to make presentations and meet key policymakers, etc.
As the size of think tanks grew, researchers should be encouraged to specialize and think tanks might want to create several research focuses. At the same time, relations between researchers and management should be made as collegial as possible and the creation of complex hierarchy and large bureaucracy within the think-tank should be avoided.
To ensure think-tanks to maintain its credibility and reputation, good quality control is essential. It is suggested that drafts of research outputs should be peer-reviewed, both within the think-tank and by hiring outside reviewers. In addition, think-tank should make a comprehensive communication strategy to communicate its message to its audience, whether they are policymakers, the public, the media, etc.
Think tanks should make a regular review of its work program and fundraising strategy. The creation of a strategic plan is encouraged, but it should be made before a think-tank is facing a crisis and should be made based on extensive discussion with different stakeholders within the think-tanks: research and support staffs, major donors, board members, etc. In addition, think-tanks should diversify its funding sources, especially by seeking funds from the private sector and by "commercializing" some of its products and expertise, particularly those where the think-tanks are well-known of. For instance, a think-tank specializing in the forecasting the macroeconomic outlook of a country could sell this service to the private sector/corporations.
Dr. Struyk's recommendations in this book were very useful for every organization that called themselves public policy think tanks, especially those that are in the second-stage and are trying to make a transition to a more established think-tank. We believe that the book is highly relevant to us at our institute today. The recommendations given by Dr. Struyk are very useful for us as we move ahead and we hope that some of them could be adopted within our think-tank.
Of course, there are a few issues in think-tank management that we wish could be elaborated further in this book. For instance, many developing countries think-tank are highly dependent on funds from official developing countries agencies, which are often project-oriented, short-term in nature, have bureaucratic reporting requirement, and often failed to take into account the long-term goals of the think-tanks receiving the funds. In the West, most think-tanks received the bulk their support from private foundations and individuals that tend to be more long-term in nature, less intervening and bureaucratic, and are often more respectful of the interests and goals of the think-tank they fund. We wish that there were a discussion in this book on how developing countries' think tanks could gain access to these private foundations and individuals. Unfortunately, this was not extensively discussed in the book.
However, despite such shortcomings, we believe that this book should be read by all think-tanks managers, researchers, donors, and other stakeholders. The advice and recommendations of the book are very practical and based on the author's experiences working with numerous policy think tanks. Thus, they could be easily adapted by other think tanks throughout the world, regardless in which countries the think-tank is located (developed and developing countries) and regardless whether the think-tank is recently established or whether it is already a long-established and highly reputable think-tank. So, we should start reading it and hopefully, we could act to implement some of the recommendations of the book within our own organization.

Book Description
While fully two-thirds of all businesses in the United States, Western Europe, and Japan are experiencing stagnant or slowing demand, most companies in these categories are either unaware of their true situation or do not dare to confront it. Blind to alternatives beyond complete divestiture or milking the investment, they dread the coming of the "endgame" -- the latter half of a product's life cycle or an industry's evolution.
This critically important new book shows managers how to play the endgame to win -- how to guide their firms to prosperity in the face of slowing demand. Divesting or milking may be the best answer in some cases; however, alternative strategies may actually produce healthy cash flows and high return on investment in industries that appeared to be hopeless. Harrigan's strategies include increasing the investment to dominate or gain competitive advantage in a field; employing a "holding pattern" until specific uncertainties (for example, pending legislation, real-world success of new technologies) are resolved; and shrinking selectively to capture the most promising customers (who will provide the most enduring and lucrative demand).
An acknowledged expert on mature and declining businesses, Harrigan shows how to analyze the key factors that will affect a firm's success in the endgame: the industry structure, the reasons for plateaued sales, the expectations for future demand, and the strength of competitors. She indicates what is unavoidable in a declining industry (excess capacity) and what is scrupulously to be avoided (price wars). And she suggests the kinds of managerial skills required to operate a mature business successfully.
Using the mainframe-computer industry as a chapter-long extended example, Managing Maturing Businesses advises managers on how to assess profit potential, how to restructure mature industries to maximize profits, and how to match management systems to the mature business. The result is an invaluable playbook for managers who want to score big in the high-stakes endgame.

Book Description
When Did I Begin? investigates the theoretical, moral, and biological issues surrounding the debate over the beginning of human life. With the continuing controversy over the use of in vitro fertilization techniques and experimentation with human embryos, these issues have been forced into the arena of public debate. Following a detailed analysis of the history of the question, Reverend Ford argues that a human individual could not begin before definitive individuation occurs with the appearance of the primitive streak about two weeks after fertilization. This, he argues, is when it becomes finally known whether one or more human individuals are to form from a single egg. Thus, he questions the idea that the fertilized egg itself could be regarded as the beginning of the development of the human individual. The author also differs sharply, however, from those who would delay the beginning of the human person until the brain is formed, or until birth or the onset of conscious states.
Customer Reviews:
Good Metaphysics, Questionable Embryology.......2001-03-07
I first read Ford's book and was fascinated by his argument. I found his utilization of Thomistic metaphysics convincing and inspiring as he negotiated a middle course between the traditional Church teaching and the performance theories of those such as Peter Singer. However, despite my clinging belief that Ford's metaphysical analysis is sound. I have encountered enough critiques of his embryological analysis to call his overall conclusions into question. I think this book is still a thought-provoking read for those interested in tackling the subject of the origin of the human person. However, Ford's metaphysical analysis is only as good as the science to which he applies it. Caution is warranted.

Everything About Chinchillas.......2006-08-25
"The Chinchilla Handbook" makes a great companion book to Dr. Vanderlip's standard, "The Guinea Pig Handbook," by the same publisher. Profusely illustrated by Michele Earle-Bridges to enhance the well-organized, straightforward text, this book covers everything the novice (and veterinarian) should know about chinchilla history, suitability as pets, anatomy, housing, feeding, behavior, health care and reproduction. This comprehensive book concludes with information about color inheritance and the fascinating world of showing chinchillas competitively. A helpful list of chinchilla affinity groups and recommended publications precede the detailed book index.
Among the many user-friendly features of the book are the well-organized tables and summary boxes which condense the essential facts about these charming little creatures into easy-to-find bites. The health management aspects of the book point the reader to the most common problems likely to be encountered with chinchillas, and practical advice about avoiding them and deciding when to seek the help of you local chinchilla veterinarian.
A great, but compact, book for chinchilla lovers and veterinary staff alike, and a welcome new addition to the Barron's series of pet owner handbooks. It goes alphabetically on my shelf next to Dr. Vanderlip's manual's on "Degus" and "Dwarf Hamsters."

Book Description
If you could select the greatest basketball team in history, who’d make your roster? Could an all-star center come off the bench as a backup? Do you want rebounding or scoring or both from your power forward? Should your point guard be a pure passer or a scorer who slashes to the basket? Who’d be your enforcer? Who’d be your emotional leader? Who’d be your go-to guy at crunch time? How do you even build a team—with pure talent alone or with a combination of talent and role players?
Well your speculation is over—and the debate is about to begin. In The Perfect Team, the NBA tapped into top basketball experts, rounded up the greatest players, coach, and GM from different eras of the game, and now presents its argument for basketball’s most unbeatable lineup. Period.
Each member of the team has been picked as the embodiment of a particular trait such as leadership or competitive drive, rather than simply for being best at his position. And each player tells his story, shares his ideas about “the perfect team,” and talks about what makes great basketball. With each team member covered by a different veteran sportswriter—and the NBA has also rounded up the best in that business, too—the individual player profiles are candid, thoughtful, and entertaining, covering their lives both on and off the court.
Loaded with new and sometimes controversial insights into the players, their skills, and the game itself, The Perfect Team is not just an argument for the best team of all time—it’s an anatomy of the game presented by those who love it most and play it best. Sure to be the subject of much thought and debate, this is the perfect book for all NBA fans.
Customer Reviews:
the perfect review for the perfect team.......2006-09-19
The Perfect Team, by Chuck Daly is a fantastic fiction book that puts some of the best players ever to play in the national basketball association like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Allen Iverson and plays out the games. They must win the world title, but can they? The protagonist in this ook is the team because they must win the title. The antagonist is also the team because they must overcome their needs to all be the best player on a star-studed team. this story mostly takes place in Los Angelas, California at the staples center. The conflict they face would be internal because they must overcome their own selfish needs like ballhogging to win. I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars because it was really good and kept me reading, but got a little boring at times. The morale of this story would be through thick and thin if we combine our talents and work together we then can be unstoppable. This book is a perfect book for anyone who loves the game of basketball. It is also a pretty easy read, but it is very long. The players involved in this story are Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Allen Iverson, Shaquille O'neal, Wilt Chamberlin, Jason kidd, Oscar Roberston, Jerry West, Bill Russell, Pete Maravich, and Kareem Abdul-jabar. Can htye win it all? Or will to all be the number one scorer make them lose? If you want to find out read The Perfect Team.
Very entertaining and informative read on basketball .......2006-03-27
At last a basketball book has arrived with less emphasis on stats and more emphasis toward the intangibles and flow of the game.
Team related superstars like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, a healthy Bill Walton, John Havlicek, and Bill Russell can be included on this list of the perfect T-E-A-M without argument due to their styles of play and the minimal amount of drama they contribute over a season.
Shaquille O'Neal and Michael Jordan in their respective primes both had tendencies to dominate the ball and both can be drama queens if they come across something they do not agree with. Therefore, their inclusion on this team can create disharmony on and off the court over the course of a season. Yet, due to the success of their respective teams, they should be on the team with little argument.
Oscar Robertson was truly the most efficient and fundamentally perfect mid-size guard the game has ever seen. Yet, similar to Jordan, he dominated the ball which can restrict the flow of the game and had no patience with his teammates. Also, his teams in Cincinnati had a questionable track record as well. Therefore, the Big O should not be automatically penciled in this team.
Jason Kidd is one of the greatest team-related players the game has ever seen. But his issues are strictly off-court in which he has a tendency to act like a diva with some of his teammates and coaches.
Jerry West is one of the four greatest guards who ever played the game. Yet, his abilities in the clutch are a mixed bag (like Kobe). Also, with a guy like Jordan who has similar abilities already on the team, having a guy like Jerry West is a bit of overkill.
Bill Laimbeer was a left field choice. I'm assuming the authors were suggesting him as the 12th man (e.g. Laettner on the '92 Dream Team) on this team with everyone else being first ballot HOFs.
Allen Iverson SHOULD NOT BE ON THIS LIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who should have been on the team: Bird, Magic, Jordan, Russell, healthy Walton, the Big O, Shaq, and Havlicek should remain on team. The other players who should be on list are: Tim Duncan, Walt Frazier, John Stockton, Kevin Mchale.
Tim Duncan has to be on this team with his attitude and repertoire of skills. He should take Laimbeer's place. Walt Frazier should be included due to his defensive skills and ability to play either guard position. Also he has excellent off the ball skills. Therefore he should take Iverson's place. John Stockton is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) passers who ever played the game. Plus he was a great shooter and has absolute no B.S. on or off the court. Therefore he should take Kidd's place. Kevin Mchale is one of the greatest low post players who ever lived. Plus he was a great all-around defensive player and would have no problem playing on the bench. Therefore, he should take West's place.
Other notable players to consider: Rodman, Dumars, or Pippen would be great in subordinate roles. The only one out of these three who does not have off the court issues is Dumars. Wilt or Kareem can take Shaq's place as the dominant low post presence in the middle.
Book would have been better titled The Near Perfect Team.......2006-03-22
This was a pretty good book, with 12 writers from around the country picking 12 players that would supposedly form the "perfect" team. Nine of the 12 choices were fairly obvious (Bird,Magic, Jordan, West, Robertson, Russell...) but three of the players were, to put it mildly, absolutely ridiculous.
The book had Bill Walton, Bill Laimbeer and Allen Iverson as members of this perfect team. The only team that would be perfect for Allen Iverson to play on would be one will 11 other guys who were happy never to have the ball in their hands. So far in his career, Iverson has accumulated exactly zero championships.
Bill Laimbeer would have been better placed as a member, no, the captain of the all-dirty players team. To have this man on this hypothetical perfect team instead of say, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who won nine championships in college and the pros, causes the book to lose a ton of credibility.
The chapter on Walton focuses on what he accomplished during his career when he was healthy...which was about ten percent of the time. To place a guy on a so-called perfect team based on what could have been is a bit absurd, I would say. Space would not permit me to start listing players who would have been better choices that the fragile Mr. Walton.

Customer Reviews:
A great help!.......2007-01-14
I really enjoyed reading this book. It had a lot of helpful and realistic tips for brides on a budget. The author even made me smile a few times with her humor. I hate reading anything that's too stuffy, so I like the fact she provides moments of light heartedness in her writing. I do wish there had been a checklist included, but other than that this is probably one of the best books for weddings I have purchased to date!
