An informative introduction to this volume of selected papers.......2005-07-05
The fifth volume of Liberty Fund's "The Selected Works of Gordon Tullock" series, The Rent-Seeking Society: Gordon Tullock is expertly edited by Charles K. Rowley (Duncan Black Professor of Economics, George Mason University) who also provides an informative introduction to this volume of selected papers by economist and academician Gordon Tullock which he wrote between 1954 and 2002. This collection has the specific focus of Tullock's views on the integration of rent seeking (outlays by individuals and interest groups to secure economic rents and privileges through government) into a general public choice model of political markets, the cost of rent seeking to society, and the current status of the field. Of special note are two critically important monographs: "Rent Seeking" and "Exchanges and Contracts", as well as definitive chapters drawn from Tullock's "The Economics of Special Privilege and Rent Seeking". This fifth volume, and all four of its predecessors, are core contributions to academic and professional library reference collections for Economic Studies.

Book Description
Skillfully blending historical data with microeconomic theory, Glenn Parker argues that the incentives for congressional service have declined over the years, and that with that decline has come a change in the kind of person who seeks to enter Congress. The decline in the attractiveness of Congress is a consequence of congressional careerists and of the growth in the rent-seeking society, a term which describes the efforts of special interests to obtain preferential treatment by using the machinery of government--legislation and regulations.
Parker provides a fresh and controversial perspective to the debate surrounding the relative merits of career or amateur politicians. He argues that driving career politicians from office can have pernicious effects on the political system: it places the running of Congress in the hands of amateur politicians, who stand to lose little if they are found engaging in illegal or quasi-legal practices. On the other hand, career legislators risk all they have invested in their long careers in public service if they engage in unsavory practices. As Parker develops this controversial argument, he provides a fresh perspective on the debate surrounding the value of career versus amateur politicians.
Little attention has been given to the long-term impact of a rent-seeking society on the evolution of political institutions. Parker examines empirically and finds support for hypotheses that reflect potential symptoms of adverse selection in the composition of Congress: (1) rent-seeking politicians are more inclined than others to manipulate institutional arrangements for financial gain; (2) the rent-seeking milieu of legislators are more likely to engage in rent-seeking activity than earlier generations; (3) and the growth of rent-seeking activity has hastened the departure of career legislators.
Glenn R. Parker is Distinguished Research Professor, Florida State University.

What I learned from her besides her class is..........1998-11-24
I was one of the author's students. Life is not fair, right? But one thing is given to every single person on this planet fairly, that is TIME. People who wastes time, read this book. Am I sure? Sure, I was taking her class and no time was wasted by her. Use time well, that's what I learned from her. Very interesting book.

A must read........2005-10-27
I don't know what the previous reviewer was talking about, obviously someone with a chip on his shoulder. This is an amazing story. When I began this book I almost read it in one sitting, I tried to prolong it for another week but when I was done I wished there was a sequel. The telling of her story draws you in and makes you realize the lifestyle of a farmer is not something most people can do and the greatness of her achievements.
this is a book that can every one should read
How a city woman became a country woman and learned to love animals.......2005-08-06
If you have the spirit of doing things yourself, an appreciation of living with the land, a love for animals, and an interest in preserving old ways of doing things, you will likely enjoy "Sylvia's Farm."
Sylvia Jorrin purchased a century-old mansion on 85 acres in the Catskill Mountain region of New York a couple of decades ago. Farming and raising sheep weren't even twinkles in her eyes when the house captured her heart and she bought it. Sylvia's tale of how a woman who wasn't very fond of animals ended up with a farm full of them is pleasant and enjoyable reading.
Knowing well New York winters, I fully appreciated, in fact was awed by, her descriptions of the efforts required to tend her flock in those brutal months. Reading about the endless gallons of water she carried over treacherous, icy ground to the sheep each winter convinced me I surely was not cut out for farming. But it also made me wonder why she did not place greater priority on ensuring a non-freezing water supply to the barn. She writes about her concern for falling on ice-coated stone steps and frozen ruts, of thirsty animals eagerly waiting, of the difficulty in getting to them on brutally cold nights. Yet in other passages she talks about handymen she hires to build things on the farm, like beautiful gates and an unusual moveable chicken cook, which creates an intriguing dynamic between priority setting, safety versus beauty. Beauty wins, apparently, over safety. As best as I could discern, she has beautiful handcrafted gates but still struggles with buckets of icy water for dozens of thirsty animals to this day. I would like to have read more about why she made choices like this.
Her writing style is a bit choppy, as she makes extensive use of short, incomplete sentences, and not infrequently this required rereading a passage to make sense of it. Sometimes there is a lack of continuity in relating an event, so the reader is left unsure of what happened. The book appears to be a series of essays written over a long period of years, and so some details are repeated, and others, which I would have enjoyed reading more about, are not explained or described further.
For example, the author at times mentions having a conflict about what clothes to wear to the barn in the morning to care for her sheep, after which she will go to work. In another essay, she talks about having a salary at last. In yet another, she talks about various paying jobs ending and money concerns. On top of all that, she describes extensively her work about the huge house, knitting, cooking meals of a labor-intensive, old country French fashion, baking bread nearly daily, managing weekly deliveries of many bales of hay, which all need to be carried and stacked, canning, caring for the animals, and so on. Complicating it a little more, she doesn't drive. She hired somone to drive her town one day a week, to shop and buy feed for the livestock. Throughout the book I wondered how did she get to that job that required nice clothes? How did she manage to balance the paying work and handle the demands of the immense house and farm? How did she manage with not driving in general, living in a rural region, with no mass transit? She describes putting a lot of work into fixing up the house when she moved in, but details about it are lacking. In one chapter she describes picking keds off a small lamb. The reader can figure out keds must be some type of insect, but it would have helped if she'd said they were nasty little wingless biting flies, to better understand how miserable they made the lamb.
The book would be enriched by more continuity and more details, and a little more editing of those choppy, incomplete sentences. It's an enjoyable story, though, and certainly worth a read, although perhaps not on a bitterly cold night unless you snuggle up with a hot beverage and a comforter. You'll surely want them when she takes you through a brisk Catskill winter.

Following Your Dreams.......2005-07-04
Crossing the Pacific Ocean. Now, there's a dream many have long held. This book does an excellent job of telling you how to do just that, regardless of whether your dream will be realized or not.
The book assumes you will be traveling by sailboat, and visiting many of the major points of interest in the wide Pacific, from the Aleutian Island to Japan, down across the tropical zones of the Pacific to the cold forbidding Antarctic regions. The primary emphasis is on cruisng the tropics, however.
I am planning to depart on a voyage across the Pacific ion a few months, and have found this book to be right on target for my needs for planning this great trip. If you want to join us in spirit, just buy this book!

This six compact disc set follows along with the textbook. Each audio lesson accompanies a chapter in the textbook and highlights either a cultural or a practical theme. Ideal for teaching yourself Navajo vocabulary and pronunciation!
Customer Reviews:
A must buy with the text book!.......2007-04-19
If you want to learn some Navajo and buy the text, you must invest in the CDs. For an English speaker, it's quite necessary to actually hear how things are pronounced in order to attempt to emulate them. But Mr. Goosen's set of text and CDs are really good together.
Excellent resource.......2007-04-19
This is an excellent resource, but I strongly advise buying the CDs as well. I think it's completely necessary for an English speaker to hear the sounds in order to even begin to emulate them. But it's a well thought out text and I'm quite pleased with it. However, I haven't actually had a chance to try any of it out yet, but the CDs have a native speaker narrating, and so I trust that when used together, this will give anyone the basics of the language.
Very Pleased.......2007-01-05
I am pleased by the book. I highly recommend that you purchase the audio CDs also so that you can make sure your pronunciation is accurate.
It would have been nice if more audio exercises were included in the audio set, but over all, I highly recommend this as a means to grasp the basics of the Navajo language.
The author and publisher did an excellent job considering how scarce good Navajo training materials are to find. Kudos...
Remember, as with any language...practice makes perfect.
the only way to learn Navajo.......2006-07-03
I bought the accompanying book to this CD set a while ago, thinking I'd pay a much cheaper price for what I thought would amount to almost the same level of instruction. I was very wrong. Especially with a language that's very far removed from one's native language (such as Navajo is from English), it's absolutely essential to hear it spoken correctly, instead of trying to figure out the pronunciation from written guides and accent marks. I was a bit apprehensive about the price of this set, but at a total of 6 CD's, it's still well under what you would pay for music CD's. My only slight criticism is that the audio lessons don't match up exactly with the lessons in the book (e.g., there are far more lessons in the book than on the CD's, so you can't hear every lesson). Other than this, however, this is a great (and necessary) companion to Irvy Goossen's book.
non professional.......2005-11-08
This book is difficult to use without a teacher. A translation of the dialogues would have been welcome since many words are not included in the glossary! The verb is another nightmare because the inflexions are prefixed unlike english (suffixed). If you look for the translation of 'worked' (suppose you learn english), you will look in the dictionary for 'work'. But if you look for the translation of 'naalnish' you will have to search thru every inflected forms of every verbs in Appendix A! If the stems of the verbs (in this example '-nish') had been included in the dictionary , it would have made the task easier. Completing the 30 lessons is a steep and thorny road.
In spite of these defects, this book is better than BREAKTHROUGH
NAVAJO and its sequel INTERMEDIATE NAVAJO.
