A Wonderful and Enduring Book.......2007-02-26
Beginning in 1986, I started my career in safety and health management. Beyond the "basic industrial safety classes" being taught at the time, a few innovative and creative individuals were looking at safety and health management in ways beyond making "physical and engineering changes" (a technique that had dominated safety program management since its inception). In 1995, Values-Based Safety Process emerged as a go-to reference for me. It is a wonderful and enduring book!
One of the chapters that I go back to regularly outlines a clear strategy for sustaining the safety management and culture process. Terry's book has endured as a benchmark in our consulting practice and approach to safety management today. I highly endorse and recommend his book, and believe it has helped immensely in the prevention of injuries and illnesses in the workplace.

The Process Employees Like the Best.......2006-02-19
I have worked in this field for several years and observed Fortune 500 companies in every phase of implementing behavior-based safety into their organizations. I have witnessed first hand all of the major consulting companies installing BBS initiatives using the books of other authors in this field. I can unequivocally recommend Dr. McSween's book as the most successful and practical.
Above all, Dr. McSween has used his 20 years of hand-on safety consulting experience to design a behavior-based safety process that incorporates employees into the design and implementation of the process - and thereby creates all the necessary elements of acceptance and long range success. Unlike other BBS methodologies, Dr. McSweens process allows employee design teams to integrate BBS into the existing safety culture in a mannner that ensures its strengths will be sustained and effective.
Dr. McSween has used his clients feedback and his experience to design a process that minimizes administrative busy work and time off the job, yet includes the powerful tools and activites that BBS brings to the safety management process. Above all, Dr. McSween is a professional widely known for his integrity and client dedication - traits that are reflected in the honesty and practicality of his book.
After many years in the BBS business as an employee of Dr. McSweens competitors, I can truthfully say that Dr. McSween's book and his process are the most successful and that Dr. McSween is the best BBS consultant practicing in America today.
The Values-Based Safety Process SECOND EDITION.......2004-03-30
This is a great, great book. Having studied safety culture management for many years, this is the best book I have seen on the subject. A practical, meat and potato's guide to establishing a successful, high-performance safety culture, with a proven method that absolutely works. McSween holds your hand and takes you right down the road where you need to go with a clear, understandable writing style that starts at the basics and takes you all the way through how to celebrate your success. The second edition has lots of case studies and a great section on safety leadership. Buy this book! Also, read some great safety articles at McSween's website "Quality Safety Edge".
Improving the BBS process?.......2004-01-06
Dr. McSween's book 'The Values-based Safety Process' was referenced in a paper he co-authored at last June's ASSE Safety Conference. One challenge we face is applying the principles of BBS in a single worker environment - his paper and book have provided us with insights on how we might move forward - with BBS ownership from all levels in our organization. Well worth the investment.
The Values-Based Safety Process: Improving Your Safety Cultu.......2001-10-31
I reviewed this book along with four others by other BBS consultant authors and I find this to be the best. Terry McSween has written a very usable book complete with forms, checklists. and essential elements necessary for doing your own process, if you are intending to anyway. I also found the section on safety incentives to be very helpful and neccessary. One is likely to do a poor BBS implementation unless they address the important organizational interface between the popular but controversial safety rewards programs and a new BBS effort. McSween's appreciation for manufacturing organizational cultures seems to me to be on the mark.

Book Description
Essential reading for students and health professionals in medicine, nursing, public and community health, dentistry, pharmacy, and allied health sciences, A Study Guide to Epidemiology and Biostatistics contains clear and succinct explanations of complex topics. Each chapter contains two components: the study notes and the exercises. The study notes briefly explain the major issues of a given topic. The exercises component requires you to apply the knowledge gained from epidemiology examples. In addition, self-assessment quizzes are available on-line. Successfully used by thousands, it is the one and only comprehensive study guide that will expose you to all of the basic principles of epidemiology and biostatistics, help you understand biostatistics and epidemiology without becoming bogged down in mathematical computation, and enable you to intelligently read and appraise the health literature. It is a must-have resource for those who will become users of epidemiological reports.

This is the only textbook for medical students and public health school students that combines the disciplines of epidemiology, biostatistics, preventive medicine, and public health in one convenient book. Written by renowned experts in the field, this text presents the information you need with a clinical slant using real-life medical examples throughout. Combining all four disciplines in one book creates an integrated approach that shows the interrelationships among these fields and stresses their clinical relevance. In addition to medical and public health school students, this text serves as a source of information for health care professionals who wish to study these topics on their own or to review for medical board examinations. A comprehensive examination including 350 USMLE-style questions with detailed answers and explanations is provided. This text is recommended by the American Public Health Association as one of the best sources for review for residents preparing for the boards in public health medicine.

The best introductory review in print........2006-09-11
Worth its weight in gold. Covers the principles of every subject area required for board certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Includes numerous lists, tables, charts, and a full set of referenced questions and answers. Downright poignant considering the precipitous decline in America's public health and preventive medicine infrastructure since the day George W. Bush assumed office.

Useful study tool for students of epidemiology.......2000-09-14
This is a useful study guide and reference tool for anyone who is starting in epidemiology. It gives a great overview on study designs, statistics, and a great deal of other useful information for creating, implementing and evaluating a study. I have found it extremely useful in both my studies and in the implementation of studies. I would recommend this book as a study tool in any epidemiology course!
Book Description
The most important techniques available for longitudinal data analysis are discussed in this book. The discussion includes simple techniques such as the paired t-test and summary statistics, but also more sophisticated techniques such as generalized estimating equations and random coefficient analysis. A distinction is made between longitudinal analysis with continuous, dichotomous, and categorical outcome variables. This practical guide is especially suitable for non-statisticians and all those undertaking medical research or epidemiological studies.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT book! .......2004-12-15
This book is really useful and handy. It is very well written and easy to read. As the name stated, it provides very practical guides for those who don't have strong background in Statistics but are dealing with longitudinal data. It is written in an example guided format. The outputs from the analysis and guidelines on how to interpret them step by step are included. There is no heavy Statistical notation and you don't need to translate Statistics into English. At the end of the book, there are chapters of how to handle missing data and softwares used in longitudinal data analysis. This book is probably too boring if you are a hardcore Statistician.

Book Description
This widely used reference has been updated and revamped to reflect the changing face of the dairy industry. New features allow users to pinpoint nutrient requirements more accurately for individual animals. The committee also provides guidance on how nutrient analysis of feed ingredients, insights into nutrient utilization by the animal, and formulation of diets to reduce environmental impacts can be applied to productive management decisions.
The book includes a user-friendly computer program on a compact disk, accompanied by extensive context-sensitive "Help" options, to simulate the dynamic state of animals.
The committee addresses important issues unique to dairy science-the dry or transition cow, udder edema, milk fever, low-fat milk, calf dehydration, and more.

comprehensive and useful.......2005-11-18
This is the second edition of a guidebook that I previously called "the best guidebook for hiking (as opposed to climbing) Mount Rainier National Park". That's still true.
The book covers pretty much every official trail in the park, from quarter-mile long interpretive loops to the 90 mile round-the-mountain Wonderland Trail. The book is organized geographically, and includes a table of lists which show trails organized by features (such as easy trails that go to waterfalls, etc.).
Surprisingly it does not contain an alphabetical index, which makes it hard to look up trails or places if you only know their names and not their locations. (For instance, the cover shows a wonderful view of Myrtle Falls, but I was unable to find out from the book how to actually get there! I had to be able to recognize that the view of the mountain was from the Paradise area, and then the falls were shown on one of the Paradise area trail maps.)
It has been some time since I last read the first edition of this guide, but I remember it being quite personal, with descriptions of what the authors saw when they were actually there. There is nothing like that in this edition -- there is no sense that authors actually travelled to Mount Rainier. The writing style seems very professional but unfortunately also very dry.
I spend most of my time in Mount Rainier going off the trails and up to the many peaks that are in the park -- and this book is useless for that purpose. It doesn't even tell you about such easy unofficial trails as Knapsack Pass or Third Burroughs Mountain. To get information like that I recommend Beckey's Guide, Smoot's Climbing Washington's Mountains, and Goldman's 75 Scrambles. (Or my own Seattle Scrambles website.)
But it is an excellent resource for what it does cover: official, maintained hiking trails in Mount Rainier National Park. Each trail is described with a qualitative overview, a detailed description of the hike, a list of points of interest, a map, and a table of vital statistics like the estimated hours it will take to hike the trail and the official source of information on current trail conditions.
(The maps show some topographical detail and some trail detail, but they are not really replacements for serious topo maps. They do show UTM coordinates, but they don't say which datum they are using. The maps probably do suffice for summertime, good weather use -- when you are unlikely to lose the trail as long as you stay on it.)
The book also has some chapters in the back covering things like "leave no trace" ethics, dealing with cougars and bears, how to hike in springtime snow, and subjects like that. Nothing in any great detail, but it could be useful information.
For the person who wants to explore the official hiking trails of Mount Rainier, from the popular to the obscure, this is the book I would recommend.

Work harder, Random House!.......2006-05-26
This 2005 edition (ISBN:0375426000) has an error in print (on page 1424-1425).The definition of "zip" was almost completely erased and just left a meaning about computer files. What a blunder! I sincerely hope Random House would correct this "bug" while reprinting or reissuing.
Customer's review of Random House Webster's C.D........2005-08-12
I've known and used this dictionary for decades. It has always been
reliable in its precise definitions which have seldom left me in the lurch, even when looking for very specific meanings on different levels of style and in the most common variants of the English language. The striking, outstanding feature of the 2001 edition is that it has assumed a shiny white quality in its paper, which makes it more attractive, adds up to its qality and design.
All previous editions have also been to the point and accurate in their indepth-going knowledge and more than sufficient etymology,
yet due to their rather dull-looking, greyish paper colour they were simply not half as tasty as this one is. Therefore I think it's just a lot more enjoyable. It's an incentive to you in so many respects and just invites you to read more and more.
One negative aspect, however, is that unfortunately it hasn't been updated so that it would be up to scratch, so to speak. The
CD-ROM, which is included in this edtion and is dated to the year
2004, doesn't contain any other words - as far as I could find out - than the very print version. So this is a bit misleading, and I was slightly upset, if not irritated, upon receiving the dictionary with the CD-ROM after having believed what was promised to me on the webpage: a completely revised and updated encyclopedic dictionary. What a disappointment when the long-desired volume arrived!
Yet what made up for it was the new stylish quality it's been touched up with.
