Book Description
Presenting the main concepts, this book leads students as well as advanced researchers from different disciplines to an understanding of current ideas in the complex field of comprehensive experimental investigation of biological objects, analysis of data, development of models, simulation, and hypothesis generation.
It provides readers with guidance on how a specific complex biological question may be tackled:
- How to formulate questions that can be answered
- Which experiments to perform
- Where to find information in databases and on the Internet
- What kinds of models are appropriate
- How to use simulation tools
- What can be learned from the comparison of experimental data and modeling results
- How to make testable predictions
The authors demonstrate how mathematical concepts can illuminate the principles underlying biology at a genetic, molecular, cellular and even organism level, and how to use mathematical tools for analysis and prediction.

A nice book that covers a lot.......2006-03-15
I'm studying biophysics and I recently bought the book "Systems Biology
in Practice". It is quite expensive, but I wanted to read up about Systems
Biology, since we currently discuss this in our Bioinformatics lectures.
The book consists of three major parts, the first contains three introductory
chapters about biology, mathematics and experimental techniques, the second
is the main part which contains 8 chapters that describe mathematical models
of many different biological processes like gene expression, biological
oscillations or signal transduction pathways. The last part has two chapters
that deal with databases and software tools that are available over the
internet.
I personally found the "Biology in a Nutshell" chapter very helpful, since
my biological knowledge had several gaps and the chapter is a very condensed
presentation of the most important biological facts. I think it is also
the main aim of the three chapters about biology, mathematics and
experimental techniques to provide people coming from different fields with
some basic information about those topics.
All in all the book covers a large variety of different topics and the models
and information is presented with helpful examples and figures, so that I
find it quite entertaining to read.
My only point of critique is that I'm still not sure what systems biology is,
since there seems to be no generally accepted definition. However, I found
the book very useful to understand mathematical modelling of biochemical
systems and I use it often as reference book.
I can not recommend this book!.......2006-01-23
I thought a while before I started to write this review about how many points I should give. Does it realy deserve zero points? In my opinion, yes! (the rating system does not allow zero points)
I bought this very expensive book, written by five authors, and had so far no fun reading it nor does it provide valuable insights about currently the hot topic in biology. Let me just give some examples to make my point clear. First, not all chapters are written equal good/bad but differ. This implies that the five authors separated the chapters under each other. Chapter 4, "Experimental Techniques in a Nutshell" represents probably the negative highlight of the book. The author who has wirtten this chapter refuses persistenly to come to the point. I have to admit that it is almost impossible to explain mass spectromety, RNAi or DNA chips comprehensible if one has only one page for each of these topis. But is this not clear beforehand? This is a general problem of the book. It covers a huge list of differnt topics but the explanations of each topic is only shallow. Further examples for this: Baysian Networks, one page. Multiple linear regression, one page. Cell Cycle, one page. Ok, now we found a general law according to this the book was written. Compile a list of buzz words, order them in a meaningful way, and wirte one page to each of those terms. Finally, lets call it "Systems Biolog" and we are done. I don't think so, that's not it!
The only people this book could be useful for are undergraduate students who know nothing at all about this subject and want to get an overview about the topics collected under the phrase systems biology. But even for this reason one can not really recommend this book because it is far too expensive.
A final remark. It is clear, that books above the 100$ threshold deserve to be evaluated stronger because it hurts too buy them. If this book would cost 20$ I would give one point.

Book Description
The Fly-Fishing guide to the Great Smoky Mountains does more than any other book in print to bring success to a fishing trip. This landmark volume is an essential guide for anyone planning to fish the rivers, streams, and lakes in the Smokies - these fisheries are some of the greatest in the nation. For successful fly-fishing, this guide is as important as the right tackle. The fist half of this guide offers advice and history. The second half examines each of the thirteen watersheds found within the park. Don Kirk provides information about trail access, fishing pressure and quality, species, fly hatch information, and campsite availability.

Nothing but raves.......2002-12-15
An earlier review stated that this book was too old. I did not find that to be the case. Mr. Kirk's understanding of the lay of the land still applies and helped me immensely. As many people know who fish regularly and often, streams and rivers change and rechange. The book tells about enough places that any fisherman could find fun, enjoyment and plenty of fish. The book was enjoyable to read, not stale or boring. His style is easy going and he gives you the confidence to take off on an adventure to the Smokeys or to any place a fisherman would enjoy fly fishing. I recommend it for the novice or expert fly fisherman!! I have read it and I have bought copies for my sons. Enjoy!!
Book is out of Date.......2001-06-13
Much of the information in the book is out-of-date. Especially info about the rivers in the Great Smokies National Park. According to 2 different flyshops in the Cherokee NC area, those rivers have not been stocked for 20 years since the federal hatchery on Bradley Fork was closed.
From a sports cartoonist in Mississippi.......2000-02-19
Don Kirk is a master outdoors writer. He has covered the Smokey Mountains better than anyone alive. This is probably the best guide on fishing this area. On the previous comment about "not paying contributors." Don contracted me to cartoon and illustrate for BowMasters...I was ALWAYS paid promptly!
Reply to Reader in Kentucky.......1999-03-08
Don Kirk has not been the editor for Bowmasters magazine for almost 2 years now, if you want to make derogatory statements you might wish to learn all the facts before you speak. Anyway the Book is outstanding as with anything Don Kirk writes and cant wait till the next revision of this Book which I and many others consider the bible for Trout Fishing in the Smokey Mountains
My encounter with Don Kirk.......1999-02-10
Just a word of advice to anyone thinking of submitting an article to Bowmaster's magazine, where Don Kirk serves as editor...Don't!
Don will do anything he can to keep from paying his contributors. Do yourself a favor and send your articles elsewhere.

Wonderful reference guide.......2004-05-21
An amazing reference book filled with close to 200 pages of text, maps, charts and photos. Designed for the intermediate to more advanced angler (although many fundamentals are covered as well). Dozens of waterways throughout the area are featured. Truly a must have reference book for any fly-fishing enthusiast looking to fish the Smoky Mountain area.

Till death or irreconcilable differences, do us part........2004-12-27
Let's face it, marriage ain't what it used to be. These days, it takes a little practice to get it right. So when I decided to bolt on the ol' ball and chain for a second go 'round, I headed to the book store first. And that's where I stumbled upon this little lifesaver. All I've got to say is, thank you Julie Two Last Names.
Earlene and I could never have elegantly navigated the awkward waters of dé ja matrimony, if not for the pinpoint insights so coherently layed out in this obvious Pulitzer candidate. For instance, it delved into all the sensitive questions that both my betrothed and I dreaded. Like, would anybody really believe us when we took our vows again, even though we didn't honor them the first time? And, should we feel guilty about receiving wedding gifts, even though we didn't give back the ones from our first marraiges? (Thank goodness the answer was no.)
How to Plan an Elegant Second Wedding, is also packed with helpful hints, like the little known, but time honored tradition of selling the bride's previous engagement ring to pay for the honeymoon. Not to mention, bouquet tossing techniques that, for the right price, can land in predetermined hands.
What more can I say? If you're gonna re-ring those wedding bells, and you want to achieve it with both grace and style (i.e. so no one will laugh at you) this book is a must. Now, I only hope she writes the next in the series. Me and old lady #2 haven't been getting along of late.
Second-timers get reassurance and solid help.......2003-11-16
Didn't someone say that remarriage is the triumph of hope over experience? Those of us who discovered genuine and lasting happiness only in our second marriages know that such hope is a vital antidote to just plain giving up. Anyway, this book offers sane and sensible advice for those planning to celebrate their second (or later) nuptuals "with grace and style," as the subtitle notes. Dubin covers the usual stuff (choosing time and place, creating guest lists, the ceremony, clothes, music, and so on) but also includes getting over your guilt, figuring out who pays for what this time, and including your kids in the big day.
Life Saver.......2003-10-24
I thought freaking out about your wedding was a religious rite of passage until I read this book. I was very nervous about planning my second wedding because it was going to be much smaller than the first but I still wanted it to be just as beautiful. I had a lot of questions and concerns such as cutting the list, whether or not to have bridesmaids and what to wear. The author gave some very practical advice that helped me through this. After reading the book I felt like the planning became a more enjoyable experience!
Great advice!.......2003-10-24
Hi my name is Andy and I live in Southern California. I am about to get married for the second time and I didn't want to make the mistake I made on my first wedding. I spent so much money that nearly put me in bankruptcy. I bought "Elegant Second Weddings" and it helped me to cut corners where needed! It was so insightful! I would recommend this book to anyone!
Very Disappointing.......2003-10-08
This book was nothing but common sense that had almost nothing to do with a "second time" bride. It talks about who pays, how to select a band, registering for gifts, and things like having a buffet or sit-down dinner. It didn't give pros or cons or advice on anything, really. Basically, it said to do whatever you want, just read the contract before signing on the dotted line. It also stated that if you want to wear white, do it, and don't let anyone tell you can't. This book was a waste of my time and very disappointing.

Customer Reviews:
Forgetting the Accessories.......2006-11-17
While this book features some interesting facts and pictures, I was very disappointed to find that the author almost completely disregards Jackie's use of accessories. I had hoped to learn about the handbags Jackie used, but despite brief references to her clutches, the only time he talked about them was to wrongly call the Gucci 'Jackie' bag - named after the woman herself - a Hermes tote. He also craftily avoids the subject of her shoes. Disappointing.
A LEGEND!.......2006-01-14
Having grown up in the 60's, and being a Fashion Major as well as a big fan of Jackie Kennedy I was excited to read this book, and pleasantly surprised with Mulvaney's perspective on Mrs. Kennedy's wardrobe. I own many books on Jackie Kennedy and was particularly impressed with the photos and information presented in this book on this fashion icon. I read this book from cover to cover in one day. The photos are stunning, and images of Mrs. Kennedy through her husband's White House years as well as post years are presented in black and white along with color. If you are a Jackie Kennedy admirer, or a Fashion History buff; this is a phenomenal book to add to your collection...well worth the hardback price anywhere!
the clothes of camelot.......2005-05-26
I absolutely loved this book. Jackie just looks so beautiful. Her fashion sense is remarkable. And she looks so elegant and beautiful. She was simply the greatest.
Excellent record of 60's style as seen thru the eyes of JO.......2003-11-09
I am not a die-hard Jackie O fan, but I love fashion in general. I have always thought of Jackie O as a fashion icon, and wanted to learn more about her. Until now, I have never seen a book that pictorally does her sense of style justice. However, in this book there are enough photographs both in black and white and in color to satisfy any fashion junkie or Jackie O fan. No matter what the situation, Jackie O was always appropriately and fashionably attired. This book does an excellent job of showing this by portraying her clothing choices through the years and in a variety of categories. This book does not go into great detail about Jackie O as a person or historical figure, I don't think it was written with those objectives in mind, but it should satisfy the fashion cravings of most people. I highly recommend it.
Chic at its best!.......2002-12-03
Who else, in all the other First Ladies, could have worn all those beautiful clothes with the chic and style Jackie had! Not many I guess. In this beautiful book, there are some never seen before pictures, that demonstrates what elegance in fashion is all about. It will take a long time before we can see that again in the White House. I treasure that book that makes me relive that unique period of refinement and class that once was in the White House, thanks to Jackie!
