Book Description
Categorical data arise often in many fields, including biometrics, economics, management, manufacturing, marketing, psychology, and sociology. This book provides an introduction to the analysis of such data. The coverage is broad, using the loglinear Poisson regression model and logistic binomial regression models as the primary engines for methodology. Topics covered include count regression models, such as Poisson, negative binomial, zero-inflated, and zero-truncated models; loglinear models for two-dimensional and multidimensional contingency tables, including for square tables and tables with ordered categories; and regression models for two-category (binary) and multiple-category target variables, such as logistic and proportional odds models.
All methods are illustrated with analyses of real data examples, many from recent subject area journal articles. These analyses are highlighted in the text, and are more detailed than is typical, providing discussion of the context and background of the problem, model checking, and scientific implications. More than 200 exercises are provided, many also based on recent subject area literature. Data sets and computer code are available at a web site devoted to the text. Adopters of this book may request a solutions manual from: textbooks@springer-ny.com.
Jeffrey S. Simonoff is Professor of Statistics at New York University. He is author of Smoothing Methods in Statistics and coauthor of A Casebook for a First Course in Statistics and Data Analysis, as well as numerous articles in scholarly journals. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute.

Artificial Immune Systems: A New Computational Intelligence Approach

Book Description
As computers and the tasks they perform become increasingly complex, researchers are looking to nature -- as model and as metaphor -- for inspiration. The organization and behavior of biological organisms present scientists with an invitation to reinvent computing for the complex tasks of the future. In Imitation of Life, Nancy Forbes surveys the emerging field of biologically inspired computing, looking at some of the most impressive and influential examples of this fertile synergy.
Forbes points out that the influence of biology on computing goes back to the early days of computer science -- John von Neumann, the architect of the first digital computer, used the human brain as the model for his design. Inspired by von Neumann and other early visionaries, as well as by her work on the "Ultrascale Computing" project at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Forbes describes the exciting potential of these revolutionary new technologies. She identifies three strains of biologically inspired computing: the use of biology as a metaphor or inspiration for the development of algorithms; the construction of information processing systems that use biological materials or are modeled on biological processes, or both; and the effort to understand how biological organisms "compute," or process information.
Forbes then shows us how current researchers are using these approaches. In successive chapters, she looks at artificial neural networks; evolutionary and genetic algorithms, which search for the "fittest" among a generation of solutions; cellular automata; artificial life -- not just a simulation, but "alive" in the internal ecosystem of the computer; DNA computation, which uses the encoding capability of DNA to devise algorithms; self-assembly and its potential use in nanotechnology; amorphous computing, modeled on the kind of cooperation seen in a colony of cells or a swarm of bees; computer immune systems; bio-hardware and how bioelectronics compares to silicon; and the "computational" properties of cells.

Couldn't Get Past Page 15.......2006-08-15
Be warned. I only read the first tenth of "Imitation of Life: How Biology is Inspiring Computing" by Nancy Forbes. I claim no expertise and the following is strictly my opinion. What little I read, I mostly disliked.
I felt the author demonstrated little subject expertise. On page 5 she defines synapses as "the connection points between the dendrites and the axons." That had me running to Wikipedia. In my opinion, the discussion of neural logic here is confusing. I don't think anyone not already familiar with it will understand the model of a neural net she tries to present.
Consider this from a sentence on page 13: "Darwin's theory of natural selection -- a radical departure from currently accepted beliefs ...." Gosh, I though a large body of currently accepted beliefs originated with Darwin. This strikes me as typical of stylistic or logic problems in the writing. In general, I found the writing unenlightened, uninspired, verbose, clumsy, and pedantic.
I didn't read much of this book because I trusted it so little that reading became a chore. It reminded me of when I was a programmer reviewing a draft produced by a technical writer. There the minimal goal was to correct mistakes both detailed and conceptual. I don't have the expertise to do that for Ms. Forbes, or the patience. Doesn't MIT press have editors? Can't they find computer scientists to write a popularization?
I am not an expert in computer science or biology. Beyond the 15 pages of this book I read, the rest may be good. But from what little I did read, I imagined the author as someone who took a few undergraduate biology and computer science courses and decided to do an interdisciplinary senior thesis about biologic-inspired computing. I think she did it without a lot of help from subject experts reviewing the text although she states in the preface that, and I quote, "Contentwise...," [long list of names here] "... were especially helpful ...." Me personally, I didn't find the content wise.
I don't know anything about the academic press, but I'm disappointed that MIT Press published this book. When I arrived at the misspelling "accomodate" on page 15, I declined to read further in a book on computer science that hadn't been spell checked. I would expect better from MIT.
[Because I read so little, I rate it a neutral three stars.]
Does it cover the Enteprise Software?.......2005-11-28
No, it doesn't.
The author is a gifted technical analyst, working for Government Agencies. The text teaches what is the "bio-inspired" computation in high level research at universities and research agencies
As commercial software coverage, the mention of RSA In. for encription software, IBM and SAP DNA algorithms
One of the most stringent needs is to apply learning algorithms in Enterprise Computing. Huge data centers must have policies decided by humans, designed for autonomic self-healing.
The theory of change management claims new idea in business - enterprise software is nothing but a reflection of the business idea - is a seed that must grow naturally.
The use of bio-inspired , self-evolutionary software code would be not only a great fit, but a commercial success. The market for such software is every business that operates a data center and/or a compute grid.
As I work in creating enterprise software products, I bought the book with great expectations. This explains my probably biased disappontment with an otherwise a good book that opens the gates of new possibilities.
There is an Enterprise Biology Software Project ongoing http://www.enterprisebiology.com/report_2004.htm . It's mere existence and name illustrates the need described in this review.

Excellent book.......2007-02-18
This is an excellent book. I have not read another book about mountain
climbing with such an interest. Messner is very good at describing his emotions. Translation is not the best one. I read this book in both Russian and English translations. I liked Russian translation a lot more.
Plenty Of Skipping Needed.......2007-01-17
This ought to be a great book. The first man to climb Everest without oxygen from the North at the height of the monsoon season. Messner was about to do solo, without any form of support whatsoever beyond advanced base camp.
But it's not as exciting as it sounds. If you want to finish this book without falling asleep or giving up halfway, you'd need to do a lot of skipping. Messner bores us with too many details, quoting chunks from publications, his mother and his girlfriends. It's really very badly edited and there are way too many "subplots" that only serve to disrupt the reader's flow of thoughts.
Skip through all the boring stuff, concentrate on his actual description of the climb, how he arrived at the conclusion that Mallory never reached the summit while climbing between the First and Second Step and how he finally struggled his way to the misty summit. It's actually quite a good read, but leave the rest of the story out.
Story is slow, climbing is good.......2004-10-27
This book demonstrates that Reinhold is not a master of the writing craft even though he knows a lot about mountain climbing and other extreme adventures. The writing (or at least the translation) is wooden -- compare these books to those of Joe Simpson or Greg Childs. Still, there was much that was interesting in this book and many good photographs. Some of the details on the journey to Everest through Tibet were intriguing. All in all, this book deserves three stars and would be worthwhile recommending to someone who really enjoys mountaineering.
A Diamond In The Rough.......2003-05-02
This book is truly a mountaineering masterpiece, but it might not seem so to those unaccustomed to Messner's writing style. Much appears to be lost in the translation to any English first-time reader. But I've read nearly all of his books and have learned how to soak it all in. Hidden in the sometimes laborious writings are crystal-clear windows into Reinhold's experiences and thoughts. His solo, oxygenless ascent is generally considered one of the most impressive events in mountaineering history. Considering that the ascent was undertaken during the monsoon makes it all that much more incredible.
story of the first solo accent of Mnt. Everest.......2002-12-08
I could not say anything less then that Reinhold Messner's "The Crystal Horizon" is a great book. It is not a usual climber's book, but rather a strange mix of history, politics, religion, geography, meteorology, personal history and world views of the man who is beyond doubt the greatest living mountaineer. The book deals with the first solo accent of Mnt. Everest, accomplished during the monsoon season. It is ravenously illustrated and photographed. It is an exciting adventure. It is a riot and a sad story of a man who escapes to the mountain to find peace. It is well worth you time.
One should forgive Messner (or rather his translator) some awkward sentence structures, punctuated by the action and verbal phrases put at the end of sentence, and quite frequent exercises in the obscure mix of native religion, Buddhist witticisms and Central European Christianity. I do however, applaud the honesty and occasional beauty of those philosophical excesses, particularly when he talks about feeling akin to Sisyphus when climbing and when he exhibits the diary entries of his girlfriend which does not always portrays him in the best light possible.
Overall, I enjoyed this book a lot.

Life is to be lived. ~Katharine Hepburn.......2004-02-09
"As a writer, I like to use quotations to illustrate themes or principles, such as the value of self-confidence or the importance of hard work. Unfortunately, in traditional compilations, finding just the right phrase to illustrate such themes can be very difficult." ~Leslie Ann Gibson
As a casual quote collector, I take an interest in any and all books of quotations. I found over 22 quotes I wanted to collect. Leslie has organized the quotes in a rather comprehensive manner. These quotes are written by, for, or about women.
If you are reading through this book, you will find some repeated quotes under a variety of headings. This becomes useful if you are adding quotes to your writing or to lecture notes. I only noticed because I read quote books from cover to cover in one sitting.
This book is divided into three main sections:
Finding Fulfillment
Developing Positive Habits
Achieving Your Goals
You will then find quotes organized into themed sections which are again organized into groups. Yes, this is a very organized book.
The content pages are helpful for finding just the quote you are looking for and the Index is helpful for looking up quotes by your favorite authors, philosophers, artists, leaders, actors and other famous personalities.
I enjoyed finding quotes by Katharine Hepburn, Rose Franken, Elizabeth Bowen, Julia Child, Ingrid Bergman, Agnes Repplier, Lucy Stone and Eleanor Roosevelt.
"You must do the thing you cannot do." ~Eleanor Roosevelt
I also loved the quote by Louise Driscall: "Within your heart, keep one still, secret spot where dreams may go."
Under "Finding Fulfillment" you will find quotes for welcoming joy into your life or discovering your strengths. Under "Discovering your Strengths" you will find quotes about doing what you love, believing in yourself and finding things to be proud of.
"The Woman's Book of Positive Quotations" is a handy reference book for writers, speakers and those of us who love collecting quotes.
~TheRebeccaReview.com
An uplifting joy to simply page through.......2003-02-14
Compiled and arranged by Leslie Ann Gibson, The Woman's Book Of Positive Quotations is a collection of 7,341 spiritual, inspirational, upbeat and meaningful quotes by a wide variety of respected women, ranging from Teresa of Avila, to Virginia Woolf, Doris Day, Margaret Thatcher, Susan B. Anthony, and many more. Organized under 62 general subjects and 703 subconcepts, The Woman's Book Of Positive Quotations is indexed by author for easy reference. An uplifting joy to simply page through at random, and a veritable treasure trove of imminently practical advice ("The attributes of a great lady may still be found in the rule of the four S's: Sincerity, Simplicity, Sympathy, and Serenity.") The Woman's Book Of Positive Quotations" is whole heartedly recommended for self-help, self-improvement reading lists, as well as Women's Studies supplemental reference collections.
Attention Authors & Speakers: Buy this book now!.......2002-12-19
As the author of a self-help/relationship book, I'm always looking out for new resources to improve my writing or develop ideas. My first book used "The New Beacon Book of Quotations For Women" as a primary resource and my next book will use this book extensively.
As a man I find that women writers tend to be more colorful, personal, and subtle in their choice of words. That is why I prefer this type of book over a giant glossary of quotations.
The best part of this book is the way the quotations are assembled around motivational-personal development themes. The choice of these themes shows a lot of enlightened thought and understanding by the editor, Leslie Ann Gibson. I've never seen such a high-quality collection of quotations around such well-chosen themes.
The only thing that I miss is a more thorough biographical index. It's hard for me to write or speak about what someone says unless the audience (and myself) knows who it is. So unfortunately, I have to spend a lot of additional time researching.
But all things considered this is a truly fine book that all serious writers and speakers should have in their personal libraries.
You go girl!.......2002-11-22
Unlike the previous reviewer, I liked how some quotes appeared under different headings, making it easier to reference to drop into emails, cards, etc. A great compilation of affirming, positive quotes, and a nice gift for Mom.
A Wonderful Selection.......2002-11-09
This book features wonderful quotes, many by well-known, contemporary sources. I would have given it a 5-star rating, except that some of the quotes are repeated several times throughout the book under different subject headings. Nonetheless, there still are an impressive number of unique quotes here--not just the usual selection, but some true rarities.

Whenever I take this book out, people fight over a peek into its glossy pages. It covers everything in fashion from the fifties, though mostly focusing on women. The pictures depict fashions, from dresses to shoes, hats and gloves to maternity wear; the women's hairstyles, makeup, and overall looks give the reader the most authentic possible view of fashion and the aesthetic ideals of the time. The catalogue also shows the prices and features descriptions that include fabric, color, and price. There are some pictures of teenage, male, and children's fashions. This book is thorough and unbelievably beautiful.
Really good fashion overview........2006-11-09
I was born in early 1953 so many of the fashions still mean something to me. I have to admit that I'm still drawn to the femininity of the period but I have my dreams and you have yours and we'll leave it at that. This is a good book for the money. Not too detailed, the reproductions can get a little bit fuzzy and there is no color; but this what you get for $15 these days. If you like what you see here, there are other resources to persue. It's a pretty good starting point.
A fun trip down memory lane.......2005-04-19
I truly enjoyed reading the old advertising copy while looking at the old ads. Some of the fashions I remember my grandmother and mother wearing. Lots of fun reading.
One of the best 50's books ever made.......2004-04-15
This is a primary source book that tells the prices and materials, which are very helpful to a costume designer. I also enjoy the book Fifties Forever, which is similar except it's color photos of actual vintage stuff (the color does help, but the Sears catalogue is still great without it).
Very informative.......2004-02-03
I thouroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was packed from start to finish with pictures. The book gives an excellent overview of what the average woman was wearing in the 1950's, unlike many similar books which focus on important designers.
While it is very light on text I still feel that it is a must for anyone interested in this period.
