Book Description
Outsourcing the American Dream addresses an interesting paradox: in a time of unprecedented prosperity, why have millions of Americans lost faith in their ability to prosper? Why do millions of Americans fail to achieve financial abundance in a nation where unlimited economic opportunity abounds? Today’s business environment is chaotic, to say the least – continually shifting political and social conditions, market dislocations, rapid technological obsolescence, and turbulent international competition. The most common response to such fragmentary business patterns has been corporate downsizing. Numerous corporations have indiscriminately cut layers of management and technical expertise to reduce corporate costs, strengthen share price, or take advantage of technological advances. In Outsourcing the American Dream, the author argues the number one reason for all business failures in America is the lack of bold, decisive, and visionary leadership in business and government. Based on his first-hand experience and research, Outsourcing the American Dream explores the often devastating consequences of corporate mismanagement and downsizing; offers innovative solutions for leaders in business and government; and candidly discusses the individual’s own responsibility for job security and career satisfaction. Outsourcing the American Dream offers something for anyone seeking to take control of his or her own life and destiny.

Outsourcing the American Dream.......2007-07-27
Downsizing- it's become the buzz word of our society. Not so very long ago, workers were employed with a single company for most of their career. Now, virtually anyone is at risk to lose their job. Big companies amalgamate little companies. People lose their jobs, the community its stability, and our country loses its consumers. In the end we all lose.
But downsizing doesn't always have to be bad news. If done properly, if the right people are fired, and if the company has done it's homework before the merger then downsizing can make a company stronger with happy productive employees.
Outsourcing the American Dream looks at all sides of the downsizing issue. Therefore, this book will be just as useful for a company looking to expand their business, a CEO in dire trouble after a downsizing fiasco, a supervisor trying to get the most out of his or her employees, and the average employee that thinks that his or her job is secure. Not being educated on this important subject is just asking for trouble.
The Mighty Eagle is floundering!.......2005-07-04
Genre: Business
Title: Outsourcing the American Dream
Author: Christopher M. England
The Mighty Eagle is floundering, why?- because the wind beneath its wings is being eliminated. The Mighty Eagle, corporate America, is eliminating it's most valuable asset, its employees in order to save money. Without the wind, the Eagle will fall!
Author, Christopher England is concerned with the effect that downsizing is having on our economy, our corporations and our future. Immediate short- term gain is not the answer to long- term effectiveness, emphasizes the author. An excellent read for employers and employees, covering many concerns of both. The book discusses how Government regulations and the growing debt are influencing our lives and threatening our economic future. It expounds the issues of exporting our manufacturing and how countries like Japan and China have capitalized on our failures.
England believes in the "Maslow approach." Only a secure staff will give one hundred percent to its employer; personnel that experience a lack of job security will be more concerned with their mortgage payments than their performance. People become fearful during downsizing; their very security is threatened. Corporate America must rethink downsizing and outsourcing.
An in-depth, well researched look at today's business practices, with an injection of philosophy thrown in. The author quotes many historical figures: Machiavelli, Sun Tzu and Einstein as well as many others throughout the book adding confirmation from the ages. Christopher England has an MBA in Organizational Leadership and is a finance and marketing consultant. He understands his subject well and has given a comprehensive look at something that affects all of us. Highly recommended by Allbooks Reviews' reviewer Shirley Roe.
2005 Writers Notes Book Award Winner.......2005-05-18
Outsourcing has become one of those hot button words in America, especially within political discourse, but too few people understand that movements within a capitalist economy are a byproduct of trends and pervasive thought rather than any one deliberate decision. Since an economy is composed of people, not money, Mr. England begins with the individual by taking the Maslow approach: only after a person is secure and sound can that person begin to integrate into a unit and self-actualize, contribute to the whole with inspiration and creativity. A company desires the best of its employees, but when it downsizes, the individual becomes fearful, drawing him into a protection response, hardly able to operate at his best. England looks at both the worker and the company, offering ways for each to take responsibility for his future while restoring belief in the American dream.
Not impressed.......2004-10-10
It's like a chat with someone over tea as to how to solve the problems of the world.
International Libertarian agrees with Economic Premise.......2004-03-11
Outsourcing the American Dream by Christopher M. England is a perfect book both for workers and employers. England stresses long term solutions in our modern services/information economy over short-term gains. He details how modern companies, sadly went only for the quick profits in the 90's and are now suffering as a result of exporting their core businesses. His prescription for job-seeking Americans who may have been downsized or are currently under-employed - Adaptability with a Capitol 'A'. But this is far more than just a book about jobs. England delves into the political side and sees expanding government regulations, our increasingly government-dependent culture, and our mushrooming debt as the main reasons for the downturn in the economy. England is also a bit of a philosopher brilliantly weaving in appropriate quotes from famous figures from history throughout the text like Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, Einstein and Henry Ford. One quote particularly stands out, "It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the most responsive to change," - Charles Darwin. Appropriately, a proud American Bald Eagle on the front cover. Expertly written and edited. -- Eric Dondero, Author, Worldwide Multilingual Phrase Book

Development of the Inner Ear (Springer Handbook of Auditory Research)
ASIN: 0387952020 |
Book Description
Vertebrate Hair Cells provides a current overview of the mechanosensory receptor cells of the vertebrate inner ear. Each chapter is written by experimentalists active in exploring a particular set of questions in an aspect of hair cell function, including development, transduction, and synaptic transmission. Experimental approaches described include molecular, genetic, ultrastructural, biophysical and computational. Thus, each chapter covers not just what we know, but how we have learned it and the implications for future work. The experimental focus differentiates this book from general textbooks and targets an advanced audience, from senior undergraduates through to scientists in the field of hair cell research.

Book Description
For every golfer who wants to drive the ball farther down the fairway, the X-Factor will show them how.
Jim McLean's phenomenal discovery of the secret to added distance has been the featured cover story of a
bestselling issue of Golf magazine, the subject of a bestselling video, X-Factor, and has been integral to the raging success of the Jim McLean GolfSchools across the country.
Jim McLean's theory is that it isn't how much a golfer turns, but how much the shoulders turn in relation to the turn of the hips, that creates the power behind a swing. He introduced his theory to a sports specialist who tested it out on pros like John Daly using a Sportsense Swing Motion Trainer (SMT)-a high-tech swing analysis machine which revealed that the differential between the turn of the shoulders and the turn of the hips creates the torque and the power in the golfer's drive. With The X-Factor Swing, McLean will teach the average golfer how to drive the ball like the pros.
Customer Reviews:
Good stuff on technique.......2004-12-05
I found this book to give interesting info on golf technique. The X-factor seems to make sense but it is a theory. I'm not sure if I totally believe in this theory. However, this book does offer some solid technique advice on how to play better and to hit the ball further. I also read recently "The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide: Key Techniques for Becoming a Zero Handicap Golfer or Better" by Patrick Leonardi. This book gives you all the necessary and concise information on how to become a scratch golfer. I know because I used it and it helped me shoot scores in the 70-75 range.
Disorganized, yet helpful.......2001-10-24
This book could certainly used a better edit. If this is the first golf book that you are trying to purchase go with another author. Mr. McLean, while a great teacher, does not write well enough to convey information to the beginner. If you have read several books on the swing then you can understand the information he conveys. Otherwise, you will be lost in the nomenclature.

Disorganized, verbose and fragmented.......1999-09-01
Mr. McLean is no doubt an expert in golf -- I have no doubt about that. I have seen serveral of his videos and have gained from them. This book, however, could have been helped immensly by a strong editorial hand. Mr. McLean waffles on and on about fragmentary parts of the swing, interspersing it pointless stories and dropped names. Only one point comes through clearly: the power in a swing is generated by the differential between the hip and shoulder turn. I am sure that if I re-read the book more points would come to light, but it is far too tiresome.
The best book I have read on the long game........1999-02-25
I have read several books on golf and the golf swing and this is the best describing the long game. If you want to know how to generate power in the swing, this is the book. Most golf instruction books, videos and television shows describe the golf swing as unusual, unnatural and not anything like other sports. Jim McLean shows how the golf swing is very similar to other sports and imitates common athletic moves. After I read this book I was able to put Jim's concept of the X-Factor to immediate use.
Book Description
Good manners will make you fabulous. Good manners will make you sexy. The well-mannered get invited to more dinner parties, see their career aspirations blossom, and have a wider array of friends and eligible suitors. So if you want to become your most fabulous self, read on–The Fabulous Girl’s Guide to Decorum is your ticket to becoming the girl you want to be.
Authors Kim Izzo and Ceri Marsh know first-hand that today’s young women require etiquette advice that speaks to their modern sensibilities. Yes, we girls need to know how to write a perfect thank-you note and set a proper table–but we also need to know how to handle a one-night stand, how to ask for a promotion, what to wear at an art opening, and when a budding romance should move from supper to sex.
With The Fabulous Girl’s Guide to Decorum, Izzo and Marsh have written the etiquette guide for the new millennium and created the ultimate icon of style for the 21st century: The Fabulous Girl. She’s liberated but chic, impeccably mannered but never a snob, confident but compassionate, full of verve instead of vanity. She’s the epitome of Audrey Hepburn-esque style and savoire faire at the workplace, at a dinner party, and even in the bedroom.
The Fabulous Girl’s Guide to Decorum addresses all aspects of urban life, including careers, friendships, families, entertaining, socializing, romance, and sex (these days they don’t necessarily go hand in hand!) and provides invaluable advice on how to navigate these tricky waters with unfailing grace. From what to wear at a power lunch to how to behave at a film premier, Izzo and Marsh address topics such as:
·Coping with an office backstabber
·Taxi and door-holding protocol on dates
·How to handle an affair with the boss
·Hosting the perfect dinner party
·How to handle fair weather friends
·Protocol for first-night sex
·The 10 things an FG will always have in her handbag
·Saving face when a male buddy has become too attached
Charming, witty and eminently practical, The Fabulous Girl’s Guide to Decorum is as essential as the little black dress and a must for every young woman’s bookshelf.
Customer Reviews:
Only Fabulous Girls would get it.......2005-11-02
I completely agree with the girl that stated if you're looking for a book that only discusses things that are spoken about in public, then turn around and walk away :) This is for the MODERN, YOUNG and YOUNG AT HEART women. It is supposed to be entertaining and light, not some dull boring where-to-put-your-water-glass oh-so-Serious ettiquette book like some extreme conservative people are looking for. An enthusiastic "Thank you!" goes out to the authors and contributors who put together this book. It is, truly fabulous!
Critics missed the point.......2005-08-29
I found the Fabulous Girl's Guide to be just that--utterly fabulous. YES, it contains topics that a "lady" (or an FG for that matter) does not talk about in public. YES it contains less-than-honorable situations. God forbid, it talks about sex. And all its forms. From the one-night stand/casual fling, to the "friends with benefits", sex with your boss and marital infidelity, as well as within the context of a relationship. This doesn't lower the book, however. It doesn't advocate extramarital affairs any more than sex ed tells teenagers to go off and do whatever they want. Rather, since sex is a part of every woman's life, whether she admits it or not, it suggests ways to behave in all the circumstances we might find ourselves in. Like it or not, people DO have affairs. So, why not follow some basic rules of behavior and not flaunt it in anyone's face? People DO sleep with their bosses. So let's at least be polite about it and not bring it into the whole office's daily lives.
The reviewers who objected to this content missed the entire point of the book-a book about manners in ALL situations. Without hiding the ones that a "lady doesn't talk about". No, the book does not recommend that a fabulous girl behave as though she were a prostitute. But it does assume that a modern young woman is intelligent enough and knows her own mind enough to decide for herself what situations she is willing to get into, and provides guidelines for proper behavior accordingly.
That being said, as a young woman myself, with many fabulous friends, I found the book both extremely entertaining, as I recognized many of the situations and characters mentioned in the book, but also helpful and practical, when discussing things like your basic wardrobe, tips for setting up on your own for the first time, and ALWAYS bringing hostess gifts and writing thank-you notes. It's etiquette for Bridget Jones, not Elizabeth Bennett, or any of the characters that Doris Day played.
If you are easily offended by frank reference to sexual situations, DO NOT buy this book. If, like my friends and I, you appreciate someone who has the honesty and candor to speak openly about innumerable less-than-flattering situations that the modern woman can find herself in, you will appreciate this book for just that, honesty and candor. And if you labor under the delusion that an etiquette book should only discuss the situations that you can talk about in public without breaking the rules of etiquette, stay far, far away.
I think the Fabulous Girl's Guide is a must-read for every young woman. It can take you from graduation to your thirties, and addresses everything along the way. The difficulty of finding a job and networking, the pitfalls of dating and roommates, up through marriage and children. All of my friends own a copy, and although I may not refer to it frequently to dispute a point of etiquette, I don't need to. Because it's not about which fork to use. It's a basic guide to life as a modern young woman trying to find a place in the world. Fabulous.
There are better books.......2005-05-18
I think this book would be ideal for a woman in the 1920's. If you are a woman, looking to be empowered, this is NOT the book for you. It talks about never losing your temper, never using your horn and never getting angry period. If somebody is rude to you, you are just supposed to shut up and smile. It is wordy and has personal stories. Not the advice I was looking for.
Middle aged women reveling in their past promiscuity.......2005-03-01
I was more than disappointed with the purchase of this "decorum" book. There was nothing that even resembled etiquette in the pages. Instead, I was appalled as I read line after line encouraging intercourse with one's boss, interns, employees and basically anyone else that one might meet on the street. Even as a current college student, I've never met anyone with standards this low. There are portions entitled "The 10 commandments of infidelity", I'm sure that a well-mannered woman understands the emotional pain that extra-marital affairs cause to children and to the spouses involved and would not willingly inflict that pain on another, yet the book states, "Cheaters never prosper- unless they follow the infidelity commandments". The ten commandments state that one should practice lying in the mirror so she can become convincing. There is also a portion (the title is too inappropriate to be given) that tells women that it is "absolutely essential" to have a couple guy friends that you call over just for having sex. There is a certain dichotomy as to use of expletives. The book states that a woman should be careful of her speech- yet the book is filled with deplorable rubbish that would make a sailor blush. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone as it would not be a stretch of the imagination to see this book as offensive to some, if not most. I can recommend several other modern etiquette books which are witty as well as intelligent and do not endorse the prostituting of ones body as a means of advancing (or liberating)her life. There was nothing of true intellect anywhere within this book. I have now discovered the difference between being a Lady and being a "Fabulous Girl". I would say that Audrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel and Jackie Onassis were in fact Ladies, and while they were fabulous- they were not women that a book such as this would produce.
fantastic Fun.......2005-01-30
Fantasticly fun book to read. I have lent it to each of my girlfriends and have read it several times over. Perfect for a Saturday afternoon or a bubble bath book!!!

The Perfect CSR (Customer Support Representative) Primer.......2002-09-16
This was one of the first books I was introduced to for customer service and stress management and is still one of the best.
I first read this book in 1997 before taking my first phone customer service position for Stephen Coscia himself. He insisted that each of his employees read the book before assisting customers. True to his writing, he practiced and taught me every word that was in his book. While I no longer work directly as a CSR, I still follow many of the books simpler rules such as qualifying escalating situations, controlling my breathing to control my stress and taking a needed break from a situation which has upset me in some way.
I have been a happier and more productive employee in all of my career endeavors thanks to this book and Mr. Coscia.
Prevent Call Center Burnout.......2002-01-29
I was fortunate enough to learn the Tele-Stress strategies from Stephen Coscia first-hand more than ten years ago, as a customer service rep and later as a colleague. He is a man who walks his talk. I still refer to the information today whenever a challenging service situation arises.
Tele-Stress is concise, practical, and valuable for the mental and physical well-being of front-line service people in any industry. In a business environment where a well-trained customer service staff can give you that edge to leave your closest competitors in the dust, you owe it to the health of your employees and the financial health of your company to acquire and implement these strategies now!
Good ideas.......2000-05-29
This book was not what I expected it to be. I am a facilitator at a call center. I ordered this book thinking that it would provide tips on how to relieve stress for call center employees; it focused more on irate callers and how to deal with them rather than on the call center itself. It did, however, employ some great strategies that I will definately be incorporating into my customer service training in future classes. If you are looking for more call-center specific solutions, pass on this one; if you are looking for customer service strategies and irate caller strategies, this is a must-read.
Tele-Stress Relief for Call Center Stress.......2000-03-29
Very informative and well laid out. The book gets right to the heart of situations and gives you good solid information. This book is a must for understanding Call Center Stress.
