Book Description
This book examines the debate surrounding the future of "waged work" and the growth of an informal economy. Through detailed research, Claus Offe and Rolf G. Heinze contend that the nature of waged work, or exchanging time for money, is being transformed. They argue that the experiences of recent decades and the persistent crisis of employment have demonstrated this transition despite the fact that "being employed" is held to be the normal psychological, social, and economic state of affairs. This is the first sustained analysis of the relationship between work and the "informal economy."
Focusing on the middle-ground between the two institutionalized sectors of employmentprivate households and the labor marketthe authors explain how an informal economy has emerged within which goods and services are exchanged, not for money but for mutual assistance, cooperation, and payment in kind. They show how these non-monetary exchanges are becoming organized not only between friends, neighbors, relatives, or members of a club, but through larger scale, innovative systems which they call "cooperation circles." Offe and Heinze cite examples of exchange networks in Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, and Canada.

Book Description
How can established models and methods be employed for the understanding and change of organisations? One of the key issues presented in this book is bridging the communication gap between business leaders and IT experts in companies and public services. This is facilitated by combining different models for the development of corporate strategies, business processes and information support. The leading idea behind this book is to present different perspectives on business modelling, based on established theories and practical experiences. The book offers advanced knowledge and relevant information on the key issues in business modelling for today`s organisations.
Customer Reviews:
For experienced business modelers - short on technques.......2002-06-19
This book is not about modeling techniques. Instead it's a compendium of papers that address the underlying issues and factors related to business modeling from the point of view of business imperatives and requirements. The papers are grouped in three parts: (I) Development on Different Levels, which addresses foundation material in the form of case studies that underscore the value of process modeling for specific companies; (II) Exploration of Different Points of View, which covers aspects of modeling techniques at a high level with an emphasis on IT and business alignment; and (III) Description of Different Aspects, which covers specific tools and approaches.
Each paper is written by a subject matter expert, and each exposes key factors that need to be considered when selecting and using a particular modeling technique. Techniques are not addressed in detail; however, as an analyst who uses both UML and IDEF0 I found that the book supports those two widely divergent methods. This is because of the focus of the book, especially with respect to organizational change and business-to-IT alignment that are addressed in Section II, and the tools and checklists provided in Section III.
The ideal audience for this book is someone who is experienced in one or more modeling methodologies, with a good understanding of business processes and technology integration. Readers who are new to business modeling will be frustrated by the diversity of the topics and the absence of techniques. The experienced modeler, on the other hand, will find this book to be a treasure trove of facts and information.

The importance of understanding the metabolism of agrochemicals in plants has never been greater. In a world where food safety and environmental concerns are increasing, knowledge of the metabolic processes within plants and the terminal residues of agrochemicals in food crops is invaluable. Written by experts in the agrochemical industry and academia, Metabolism of Agrochemicals in Plants is the first text to give systematic coverage of this important topic.
This text brings together the current status of the subject with chapters on regulatory considerations, comparative metabolism of plants and animals, and the different phases of metabolism. Including new and novel research in primary metabolism, herbicide metabolism and bound residues, this work is unique and thoroughly up to date. This is an essential text for chemists and biochemists working in the agrochemical and pharmaceutical industries and academia as well as analytical chemists, regulatory chemists and environmental scientists.
Metabolism of Agrochemicals in Plants is a volume in the Wiley Series in Agrochemicals and Plant Protection. This series brings together current scientific and regulatory knowledge and perspectives on all aspects of the use of chemicals and biotechnology in agriculture.

Asking questions.......2004-06-25
Probably the best book of its kind available for biology students with no statistical background. Starts with the conversion of informal questions into testable hypotheses and then shows how a variety of basic statistical techniques can be used to test hypotheses. Then gives sensible advice on presenting the results.

Book Description
Grab a ticket for the adventure of a lifetime: meet an American woman who protected rare apes by painting SIDA ("AIDS" in French) in blood on a Kinshasa wall to keep rampaging looters at bay.
Hear bullets zinging overhead...Living on the edge, Delfi Messinger takes on bureaucratic snafus, starving animals, corrupt officials, swarming ants, and even Ebola.
Meet a dozen bonobos--golden grains of ecological sand--that Delfi fought to save.
Customer Reviews:
An remarkable insight .......2007-09-16
An amazing story of Ms. Messingers attempts to make a difference to a group of apes in war torn africa. In doing so she demonstrates that with perserviance even in Africa you can make a differance, for people as well as apes. Her trials higlight the importance of long term commitment and the understanding that it takes years to learn enough about someplace to do more good than harm. A lesson many well intentioned folks would do well to learn.
I highly recommend this well told tail.
Commitment and Reality in the Congo.......2006-12-05
With a great deal of humor and even more practicality, the author, Delfi Messinger, tells the story of what it is like to do the work one loves in a disfunctional society. Wanting to do animal research in a country she learned to love while being a Peace Corps volunteer, Delfi became involved with the French-supported animal and disease research institute in Kinshasa in the early 1990s. She stayed through the waning days of Mobutu's regime and on into the early days of the new Kabila government. She writes with great suspense, detail and lively descriptions of the lootings and upheavals that sent almost all the expatriates from the country. She stayed to continue the work and to protect the animals of the research institute, among which were rescued bonobos. Watching other animals become emaciated and dying from neglect she determined to attempt a rescue of all or some of the bonobos in her care. How she does that is an amazing story of perseverence, patience and ingenuity that will have all readers enthralled.
Intense and all true!.......2006-11-02
This is the stuff you won't hear in the news. That's because Messinger was far, far off the tourist path, working in the heart of (former) Zaire. There she was, a young midwestern woman, so bold and deeply involved in the local scene that it's amazing she got out alive, but not before she also assisted others in narrowly escaping a life of tortured captivity. Was she incredibly brave or so blinded by her commitment that she risked her life many times over?
I couldn't put it down.
Book Description
Do you feel that even with exercise and diet you are far from reaching your fitness goals?
You are not alone. Even though we are more into fitness than ever, the programs we use are just not working well enough. Many are even dangerous and can weaken the body and make it prone to injury. Marv Marinovich, former conditioning coach for the Oakland Raiders and renowned sports trainer, and Dr. Edythe Heus, a chiropractor specializing in rehabilitating elite athletes, have developed ProBodX (Proper Body Exercise) to close this fitness gap. ProBodX is the only fitness and conditioning program that safely builds and tones muscle while increasing strength, flexibility, balance, and grace.
ProBodX was originally designed for professional athletes -- such as Jason Sehorn of the New York Giants and Steve Finley of the Arizona Diamondbacks -- looking to increase their level of athleticism and to avoid injury. In this book, the program has been designed for anyone who wants to improve athletic ability or simply get in shape and stay in shape without injury.
Essentially the ProBodX program combines unstable surfaces (gymnastic balls, slant boards, balance disks) with multiplane movement and strength loading (special hand and foot weights) to simultaneously stretch and strengthen the body. The result is a stimulated nervous system and increased speed, power, and flexibility.
Whether your interest is reducing body fat and increasing lean muscle, playing sports, or just maintaining a healthy body, ProBodX's unique balanced fitness program can help. In addition, the program includes a dynamic eating program based on Barry Sears's Zone Diet to truly jump start the body and see real results in four to six weeks.
Customer Reviews:
Best Program for Total Body Fitness !.......2006-11-25
It took me awhile to learn to do the exercises properly.
At first I was flopping all over and a bit nauseous when doing the "on your back" routines. I also was doubtful that I, at age 46, would ever be able to do the more advanced moves.
After doing the program twice to three times a week for the past month I am now free of chronic neck pain which has bothered me since I broke my collarbone at age 22. I can do the "on your back" exercises with no problems - it seems to be a neurological thing.
Best of all, I can balance on the disks and do all of the basic + routine, including the inverted V (bottoms up) with my toes on the top of the ball!
My coordination is better, I can feel my back muscles - those along the spine - at work, and I've gone from a 24% body fat to a 22% body fat.
The program DOES take work, and it takes a long time in the beginning while you are learning the workout, but it's well worth the effort.
It would be great if the authors would do a DVD, but in the meantime the book explains the exercises as thoroughly as possible. You don't feel the same "burn" as you do with weight training or aerobics, but you feel it the next day !
The equipment consists of a Swiss Ball, two balance disks (which we made for $10 a set), and a set of hand weights with handles. Not expensive or hard to come by at all, even here in the middle of the South Pacific.
Experience ProBodX, Then Decide.......2005-02-21
I have actually read ProBodX and done the exercises (unlike the two "one star" reviewers below) and this is by far the best program I've ever done. The results are fast, the program is challenging, and the time needed is moderate (though it does take longer at first when you're learning how to do the exercises). My biggest complaint is the name "ProBodX" - it does nothing for me. The program is more of a "total" or "complete" or "comprehensive" body workout.
About those "one star" reviews. Normally I would let it slide but these two are so full of it I need to respond.
"Never read the book. Never did the exercises? Easy?" Need I say more. No, but I will. First, the authors have numerous examples of professional athletes who use ProBodX exclusively and get great, tangle results (without lifting more that 35 lbs.!) The authors beef with traditional weight training is simple: why only exercise 10-20 major muscles (out of 640 skeletal muscles) when we need all of them to operate optimally. And the reviewer claims that ProBodX is another "easy" program?! This is by far the most challenging program I've ever done or seen. You do all of the exercise on a unstable or uneven surface; you use your muscles on multiple planes (not just up and down or side to side); you reverse the exercise; and you use muscles that you didn't even know you had! Easy? Not unless you're just perusing.
1) Yes, the Forward is by Barry Sears, who uses the "Z" word four times - not 75% of the time. He mentions his "Z" diet because it`s part of the ProBodX program - taking up over 80 pages in the book!
2) "The bashing? The attacking?" The authors compare over 30 types of exercises/sports to ProBodX, including a very extensive comparative chart, like the ones used in Consumer Reports. The authors remind readers to continue their own exercise program if they want to - just understand that there may be some limitations not previously known.
3) "Merchandising?" There is ONE reference to purchasing ProBodX equipment in the book. Let's see, they've designed a new exercise program that requires an unusual set of equipment. How dare they tell us where we can buy it! I went online and found only one other company that sells all of the equipment needed to do ProBodX (Sissel-online.com). Personally, I shopped at both.
4) "The writing style? The attitude?" Just about everything they claim is backed by examples from real life professional and college athletes. Performance improves across the board. That's attitude?
Suggestion to reviewers like these two - please spare the rest of us your distorted opinions and half-truths - save that for talk radio.
A Functional Way to Fitness, Athleticsim & Health.......2004-08-04
I'm a professor, certified specialist in sports conditioning, and top level skier/alpine snowboarder. The progressive programs that Marinovich and Heus explain in this volume are basic yet sophisticated, energizing yet effective. I've done several exercise programs for general health and ski/snowboard fitness over the years: circuit training, yoga, pilates, anaerobic lifting, interval training and Tae-Bo. All of these, especially when combined into a yearly schedule with reasonable goals, are effective. Yet, the proprioceptive facilitation, core fitness and holistic body coordination that Marinovich and Heus present here are the best single program you could adopt. They give you several different programs, from beginners to elite athletes, that help your aerobic capacity, anaerobic strength, coordination, balance and agility - sometimes all within a single exercise! At the same time, they explain how this program avoids the burnout and overuse injuries that yoga, heavy power lifting and too much aerobic work can cause.
Good overall.......2004-04-12
Like the previous reviewer mentioned, this book works way too hard at selling itself. However, the exercises are excellent. I think the point is to teach your body to stabilize from the core while doing sports or just moving generally. It's a full body approach, and you definitely feel like you've a had a workout and a good stretch afterwards. It's kind of like pilates but more functional. It has lots of progressions so even if you're in great shape you'll be challenged. The diet at the end is basically the zone diet except it tells you only to eat organic food if possible, and it has lots of recipes.
If you don't want to buy the 'pro bells' then use two small bottles of laundry detergent that fit your hand well and use those. All you need is a ball and the bells to do the 'basic workout'.
Don't buy this informercial!.......2004-03-31
I have never written a review before because I no other fitness book I have ever read has stirred up as much of a feeling of being ripped off. And I have read many of them including Core Performance, Body for Life, Hotpoint, Body Flow, etc. I wanted ProBodX to work. After not liking it initially, I put it on my shelf. A few days later, I took at second look thinking perhaps "there's got to be something to appreciate about this."
Well, not only were my feelings affirmed, but I the more I read, the more infuriated I became. This book is nothing more than an informerical. If there is real content, it can hardly be seen because it is enshrounded in hype and merchandising. Where do I begin?
1) First, there is a blatently self-serving Forward from Barry Sears. This is no exaggeration. He spends about 75% of the Forward talking about himself and the greatness of his diet plan.
2) Then, there is the bashing. The authors spend an entire chapter attacking every popular fitness approach such as conventional weight training, yoga, cardio etc. They don't just point out deficiencies or pros and cons. They just utterly rip everybody else apart while at the same time making the argument that ProBodX is the only thing that really works.
3) Of course there is the merchandising. Natually, you can only do ProBodX if you spend $200 on equipment. Where to do you buy the equipment from? Naturally, from one of the authors' websites.
4) And there is the whole writing style of the book. The same attitude of "this is great, everybody else stinks" pervades the whole book from beginning to end. It reads like a very poorly written brochure.
All that said, you're probably wondering if I am kind of overboard. Yes and no. I believe there are probably some very valid ideas contained in this book. But the everything that I have said above utterly destroys whatever genuine value this book may have had.
If you are looking for this type of core building building and integrated approach to fitness, the best book on the topic is Core Performance by Mark Verstegan

Wolof-English/English-Wolof Dictionary & Phrasebook.......2006-10-03
Yes,
It is far different than the Wolof that I now, which I learned in Senegal. It seems the Gambian dialect may have more of a Mandinka and Jolla influence. Many of the phrases are different, the spellings seem a little awkward, and the words themselves have changed shape, i.e. spelling and pronunciation, or if not, often are totally different words altogether. Its sort of like reading Appalachian English. I always found the standard Senegalese orthography perfectly condusive to English pronunciation, moreso than to French even. But with these criticisms, I find it a well put together book, and given the affordability of it, and the lack of available texts on this subject, its definately worth having and referencing.
Wolof-English dictionary.......2006-07-12
I am happy with this purchase. The book is a great resource. It seems like the spelling in the book may be a bit off, but once you get the hang of it, I think you can be understood if you follow their pronounciations.
Restricted to the Gambian dialect.......2006-05-27
The reader should be informed that this dictionary refers to the Gambian dialect of Wolof. As most books on Gambian Wolof, it does not use the standard orthography as specified by the language institute CLAD (Centre de linguistique appliquée de Dakar), which means that it will become a difficult task when trying to cross-reference with other books on Wolof.

Book Description
This is the first book to concentrate less on Westwood as a personality than on the extraordinary and intricate clothes which have won her the respect of the international fashion community. It breaks new ground by presenting the views of Londoners who collect, wear and make her garments, as well as by exploring Westwood's genius for tailoring and witty manipulation of traditional fabrics and styles.
Book Description

CRM helps companies improve the profitability of their interactions with customers while at the same time making those interactions appear friendlier through individualization. CRM's purpose is to enhance customer satisfaction and retention by alignment of customer business processes with technology integration.
As the Internet and digital technology change the ways business is conducted, the academic disciplines of information technology and marketing are merging. As a result, experiments with new and modified courses are being taught at many innovative universities at the forefront of this change.
Book Description
This book arises from an event on the future of banking which included leading figures in the industry. It addresses current trends influencing competition including globalization, market structure, technology, and demographics and how these will impact upon companies and their organization, business opportunities, revenue streams, branding, and customer behavior. It will also show banks how to develop strategic initiatives for future competition. This will represent essential thinking for the banking and financial services industry.
Book Description
After living through the stock market crises of 1987 and 2001-2, many people wonder just how safe the financial system is, and what kinds of financial instruments they should trust their savings to. This book explores the future of the financial services industry, giving readers an idea of the kinds of institutions and services that will survive in the early twenty-first century. The book focuses on the changes that we will face in the near future, such as greater use of the Internet for banking transactions and the increasing globalization of financial services. It considers changing conditions in key financial centres around the world, especially in the US, the UK, Germany, Japan and Switzerland; and it points to the probable disappearance of the insurance sector as a separate industry. The book describes the strategies of major financial services firms, and discusses the likelihood that various strategies will be viable in the future. The author's informative and, at times, provocative assertions will be of interest to anyone who wants to understand how the financial services sector is developing.

Book Description
In thinking about the future of financial intermediation and regulation in today's global economy, it is important to be clear about the fundamental role financial intermediaries will play, the services they will provide, and the forms the intermediaries are likely to take. Only then can one consider why and how regulation should be applied and what form this regulation may best take. There will always have to be some mechanism for channeling the savings of households into the investments of firms. The financial intermediary moves resources between businesses and households. The services a financial intermediary will provide and how it will be organized in the next century are discussed.

Book Description
This volume presents a collaborative effort by 22 labor economists who examine worker displacement and the attempts to address it in 10 industrialized countries. Using large nationally-representative data sets and detailed policy analysis, the authors focus on two key questions related to worker displacement: 1) whether the experiences of displaced workers in the Untied States, and the patterns of experiences across workers, echo patterns seen in other developed countries, and 2) what can be learned, both from the similarities and from the differences across countries?
For instance, do commonalities in displaced workers' experiences across all countries reveal fundamental features of modern industrialized economies? Are international differences informative about the efficacy of different public policy approaches to worker displacement across countries?
Within-country patterns are described using a number of demographic characteristics including age, tenure, gender, and skill level. Results are also offered from cross-national comparisons in the levels of key variables (such as the frequency of displacement, and the duration of post-displacement unemployment) and the association of these variables with international differences in labor market structure. While these sorts of results are generally the most difficult to generate, they are potentially the most rewarding. And in the case of these efforts, they are thought-provoking as well.
