5 out of 5 stars Puts life in perspective.......1998-11-05

As a member of Generation-X (that means in 1998 I'm 35...)I find this book puts many things about life today in perspective. An excellent and easy read, I would recommend this to anyone who is fascinated by social and demographical characteristics of our society. A word of warning though, for all you Gen-Xers out there... You may develop a new found hatred of people in their late 40s and early 50s... It's a fun book. Read it.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it so much, I made my wife read it........1998-08-15

I read this book in the summer of 1996, and found it to be an excellent tool. It takes a very organized approach to presenting the history of demographics and applying demographics to trends that we have observed over the past. It is highly relevant to life in rural Ontario which is where i was living at the time. Issues like the future importance of hospital closings, school development, and social programs should all be viewed in the context of demographics.

After reading this I went on to read Faith Popcorn's books, and found them to be rather flat predictions that demographics could easily fortell. Boom Bust & Echo is a useful toolkit for business people with lots of examples to draw from. My wife and I had our own company at the time, and I had to make her read the book so we could re-assess our strategy in light of this under-used tool, and it allowed us to reposition our company without straying from our original mission.

      Book Description

This is the first book to present the African perspective on the Bretton Woods approach to structural adjustment, and it does so with the input and support of top economists and scholars from every corner of Africa. The authors use as background their own extensive experience and a collection of 30 individual studies to summarize this African perspective and articulate a path for the future. They underscore the need to be sensitive to each country’s unique history and current condition. They argue for a broader policy agenda and for a much more active role for the state within what is largely a market economy. Finally, they stress that Africa must, and can, compete in an increasingly globalized world and, perhaps most importantly, that Africans must assume the leading role in defining the continent’s development agenda.

3 out of 5 stars A few problems theoretically .......2006-09-29

Soludo and Mkandiwire are two excellent Economist and have compiled a number of astute observations on African Developmental strategies. I do think that there are a few oversights and understatements however. Their prescriptions for Africa to be able to compete in a Capitalist society dominated by Western Nations is a little myopic. Africa is a repository of minerals and goods for these Western Nations, this in mind, one can conclude that those very same Nations will do every and anything under the Sun to ensure that Africa remains in the state it's been in for the last 500 years. Africa must continue to search for alternative and imaginative economic models in order to survive. Although the authors explication of External Market Shocks' disruption of the African economy, they failed to grasp what the Pan Africanist have been exhorting for over a century and that is a market for Africa already exist. It's Black Americans, Black South Americans and West Indians. One reason for the lack of organizational producer / consumer relationship necessary between the Continent and the Diaspora is psychological but that's another book. I would posit that if Africans were to develop an internal market, not only would we be able to cushion ourselves against the above mentioned External Market Shocks but trade relations with other developing and 'Leftist Countries' would be instrumental in not only our growth but the subsequent dismantling of a maleficent Global Capitalist system. It is a good book, I just have a few philosophical differences.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best written books on economics........1999-04-08

A key to understanding the condition of African economics rather than accepting the prescribed solutions the west imposes on the continent. Through their own experiences and scientific studies on the continent the authors have come up with prescriptions and diagnosis very different from the imposed structural adjustments theories that have proven to be failures. A very refreshing reading indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Must reading for anyone concerned with African development.......1999-03-26

Must reading for anyone concerned to understand African development strategies. Particularly recommended for those involved in the debate about trade and new U.S. policies towards Africa. Written as a synthesis of work by leading African social scientists, this book is concise, clear, non-rhetorical and solidly based on empirical work. It not only provides a devastating critique of standard "structural adjustment" models, but also lays out an alternative strategy for African-directed growth and development. -- William Minter, Senior Research Fellow, Africa Policy Information Center

        Book Description

Biology Revisioned presents an engaging look at the changing state of biology and proposes that we reconsider our views of science and life. Harman and Sahtouris suggest that it is an historical accident that physics came to be the generally accepted root discipline of science. If, for example, biology were instead the foundation, life sciences would be analyzed in a complete different way. We would need to look at wholes (organism and ecological systems) prior to parts (fundamental particles). The book examines several theories of “new biology”—simply adding new tool to the current definition and a moderately holistic outlook—but focuses on an even more radical holistic view which assumes the possible presence of consciousness as an underlying layer of physical reality. The authors also suggest that the scientific perspectives of non-Western cultures are invaluable to a complete understanding of science—that Western ideals are no complete without these views.

5 out of 5 stars "As above, so below"...as never before........2001-05-20

In this remarkable book, two great biologists hold a speculative conversation about the true nature of "life, the universe, and everything," and you get to eavesdrop. Your world view will never be the same.

Following in the tradition of James Lovelock and Lyn Margulis, the late Willis Harman and his protege Elizabet Sahtouris here take Gaia Theory (the notion that our planet is a superorganism not merely hosting life, but in itself alive) to its next logical extension. Gaia, this duo speculates, is conscious. Indeed, they postulate that not only is Gaia conscious, but every level of life is conscious. From the atomic components of each cell in your body to the unimaginable vast Body of which Gaia herself is only one cell, all...All...ALL is conscious.

The adage, "As above, so below" has never had more compelling meaning.

Harman and Sahroutis base their logical groundwork on a concept of all being organized into holons (identity units) which are part of a larger holarchy (complex of identity units). Holons, say these two, take their purpose from the holarchy in which they are embedded, and take their ability from the holons which are embedded within them. Thus, your liver exists to serve your body, and draws its capacities from the health of its individual cells.

Take this concept outward to Gaia--nay, to the penultimate Cosmos--and you may find, as I do, profound spiritual implications. You will also understand why these two respected scientists had to present this book as a speculative conversation. Pushing the outer edges of thought, challenging academia's entrenched mindset, is professionally risky. But Sahtouris has no less a motive than the saving of the planet. She holds that only by understanding what We are, can we save Ourselves from physical destruction.

With the greatest of delight, I recommend this book to your consciousness.

        Book Description

Birds do it, Bees do it, even educated fleas do it...but how? Reveal the secrets of procreation in this beautifully illustrated and fascinating look at the sexual life of animals.

Nature has an infinite number of ways to reproduce generation after generation of amazing creatures. From the mussel who creates 25 million offspring at a single birth to hermaphroditic worms who lie head to tail with their partner so they both can enjoy parenting, the information is astonishing and often times miraculous. Imagine this pairing: the male blanket octopus is only one inch long, while the female is six feet long. Or how about the male mantis who is sometimes devoured by his mate in the midst of fertilization--and is still able to continue the process! However, on the lighter side, whales courtships are a ritual of caressing, nuzzling, and rubbing. Enter this world of basic breeding and gain a true understanding of the complexity of it all.

        2 out of 5 stars A Children's Book?.......2007-01-13

Reproduction throughout the animal world is fascinating in its diversity. This 'picture' book is a very simple presentation of some of this diversity - simple colorful drawings of various species with a paragraph explaining something unusual about their reproductive behavior. Nothing more, really, than a number of 'did you know' anecdotes.

Maybe it could spark a greater interest in some people about the diversity of reproductive behaviour, sexual differences and evolution. For a much more adult, in depth and entertaining book about reproduction in the animal world I would recommend Olivia Judson's 'Dr Tatiana's Sex Advice to all Creation'.

For me this is a disappointing book in its simplicity and it must be aimed at older children rather than adults.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent descriptions from experience.......2002-06-07

The author's experience in long distance backpacking is obvious when he shares his knowledge in an honest and enlightening way.
The section on inspiration and reality is well worth reading. He gives a nice little description of the long trails, with his comments and experiences. His food choices and ideas alone make the book worth the price. He includes the best description of chemical purification I have seen in some time. He covers boot fitting (one of the most important items, I think, in backpacking) like no one else I have ever read. Not a rehash of what has already been written (I admit I haven't read his other books), but some critical and important original views on the subject.
This book delivers excellent information for the long-distance hiker.

        3 out of 5 stars unnecessary?.......2002-03-20

The first time i glanced at this book I thought that i was looking at 'The Backpackers Handbook', also by Townsend. This seemed, and still seems to be, more or less a duplication of that previous guide. If you don't own the 'Handbook', then definitely check this out, I really like Chris' open-minded writing and hiking style.

The only new information in 'Advanced Backpacker' is brief; and can be found on the internet or in your library for free. But if you really want a wholesome guide to carry with you, then this should be the one.

It is a very good book but I missed that in the same page one could find the pattern and the final drawing of the respective dress.

I was looking for patterns for victorian costumes and this book more than fit the bill. You must have more than average knowledge of sewing though.

4 out of 5 stars its great...if you love edwardian costuming.......2006-03-22

If you really like the Edwardian period, this is a good addition to your costuming library. But if you're a beginner I wouldn't recommend it.

Instead of giving you the pattern and the picture of what the pattern will make, it gives you a pattern and a few examples of the kind of garment the pattern will make. For example: it gives lots of pictures of tight fitting jackets, and somewhere later in the book it gives lots of patterns for "tight-fitting jackets"). This means that for each pattern you much have knowledge of the style, tailoring techniques, and most importantly, alteration. This is why it isn't for beginners.

I would first suggest a more straightforward book like The Voice of Fashion: 79 Turn-Of-The Century Patterns By Frances Grimble or The Edwardian Modiste: 85 Authentic Patterns By Frances Grimble. But if you can't get books on Edwardian fashions and patterns, go for it.

I would buy Turn-of-the-Century Fashion Patterns and Tailoring Techniques for three reasons:
                1. The clothes in it are really cute
                2. it can act as a source book
                3. it's great for people who are absolutely IN LOVE with Edwardian clothing, like I am.

3 out of 5 stars You have to enlarge the patterns.......2006-02-26

I thought the patterns came with it, and the book was on techniques for the manufacturing. But you have to enlarge the patterns yourself. Other than that, its a good book if you have the time.

4 out of 5 stars Basic Tailored Styles; You Create the Variations.......2000-10-31

In case you're wondering which turn of the century the title refers to, it's the 20th, not the 21st. This is a reprint of the 1901 edition of _The "Standard" Work on Cutting Ladies' Tailor-Made Garments_, by the Jno. J. Mitchell Co. It is a drafting manual and pattern book for women's tailored garments, such as suits and coats. Like most such tailor's drafting books (they were published into the 1940s but died out along with custom tailoring), it gives the most basic patterns for conservative styles. The garment maker was expected to vary the patterns to provide styles beyond the basics and/or update the basics to the season's trends; to provide his/her own trim ideas; and to draft/grade the correct size for the wearer.

This edition is very similar to the 1908 edition of _The "Standard" Work on Cutting Ladies' Tailor-Made Garments_, which also has been reprinted and is available under the title, _Ladies' Tailor-Made Garments 1908_, by S. S. Gordon. The 1908 edition contains many of the same patterns, but was reorganized and enlarged.

4 out of 5 stars It's not as hard to make these fashions as it first seems to be!.......2007-10-14

When I first got this book I had a lot of fun just looking at the fashions during that time period. I bought the book to make an outfit for a re-enactment. I read the instructions for using the Diamond Cutting System and the rulers provided on the back pages of the book, and although I read it all through a few times, I was very confused on how to draft the patterns. My sewing experience is limited to following the instructions that come with today's regular tissue patterns. I had never drafted a pattern before. But once I started the "hands on" work it suddenly made sense! I picked up some old curtain materials at garage and rummage sales for my project. I started with the simplest skirts and I even found it very easy to modify the draft to fit irregular body shapes using the rulers which I photocopied from the book, cutted out, and pasted to cardboard. Pattern paper is impossible to find these days therefore I drafted the patterns onto old bedsheets. I also had to use an ordinary carpenter's angle to work with the rulers. The only tool I don't have, which the book tells me that I need, is a scroll or french curve to shape the armholes, neck curves and some skirt curves. To make the skirts I found that I didn't need this curve tool for the simpler patterns. However, once I start into the more complex patterns it will become a necessity. Pattern instructions are scarce, but if you have some sewing experience this fact should not discourage you too much. Yardage required is also seldom given, so you will have to estimate how much you need once you have drafted the patterns - or just buy yards and yards of old curtain material to start with! I so pleased with this book that I intend to make many more outfits than I had originally intended to make before I bought the book!

5 out of 5 stars much like the other Frances Grimble books.......2006-03-22

This book features patterns for dresses, skirts, shirts, jackets, underclothing (etc.) for the years 1900-1906
                25 (patterns) from 1900
                18 from 1901
                5 from 1902
                16 from 1903
                7 from 1904
                5 from 1905
                3 from 1906

This is a good book, well up to Frances Grimble's high standards. It contains many patterns but can also double as a sourcebook, as it contains many pictures of clothes from fashion plates. I would recommend buying it, but make sure to research these years to find out if you really want it.

                5 out of 5 stars A must-have Edwardian reference.......2002-02-15

I make custom reproduction clothing and I have found The Voice of Fashion to be extremely helpful. The pattern selection is very impressive and attractive. I have the Janet Arnold book and the Norah Waugh book, but this book has many more patterns for this era. I can find one for any style the customer wants, rather than having to take some basic pattern and alter it. I just let them leaf through the book and pick one out. By using the special rulers I can enlarge the pattern to fit any customer with no (or hardly any) alterations-these patterns fit better than most commercial sized patterns. The rulers are easy to use, you just follow the instructions. The book also has instructions for early 20th century sewing methods, and lots of fashion columns on fabrics and trims. I consider it indispensable to my business. If you wanted to make even one period outfit, this book would still probably save you money, because otherwise you'd have to buy separate patterns for the dress, the underclothes, the outer wear etc.
