Book Description

The dawn of the 21st century coincides with the dawn of a new economic era--an industrial revolution breathtaking in its scope, its potential and its promise. Ahead lies a sustained period of economic growth: a boom that could last 30 years or more. The era ahead will demand fundamental rethinking by statesmen and public policy experts, and just as importantly, by people in business. The corporations that recognize this "boom" and build organizations that can take advantage of this huge global market will be well positioned for phenomenal growth and unlimited earning potential. Through, Boom, internationally recognized experts Frank Vogl and James Sinclair show corporations how to best position themselves for this new era. Specific topics include: an overview of the new industrial revolution; redefining the corporation for global business; the new politics and its implications for transnational b usiness; the "new" global state of mind, corporate knowlede and contracts.

5 out of 5 stars EQUALS DRUCKER!!!.......2000-12-08

When it comes to business and management books, there is a typology that categorizes much of the writing in this genre into two: by thinkers who can't do and by doers who can't think! This underlines the fact that academic analysis, by itself and without practical relevance, achieves very little. Similarly, so-called practical recipes for success with a narrow focus and little real understanding of the underlying principles also leave much to be desired.

Therefore, when a book that makes an important contribution to the understanding of an increasingly competitive global economy such as BOOM makes the scene, it is to be welcomed as a breath of fresh air. Written by two authors with strong credentials who are themselves in the midst of building a multinational enterprise, this book speaks with a certain air of authority and credibility. Frank Vogl was born in London and educated at Leeds. A former Reuters reporter and European business correspondent of The Times, he moved to the USA to become US economics correspondent for The Times and then director of information and public affairs at the World Bank. He is now a director of Sutton Resources Ltd of Canada, of which James Sinclair is a fellow director and chairman. Sinclair is an authority on investment and financial markets and was formerly head of a leading Wall Street precious metals trading firm. His previous books include The Strategic Metals War and How to Make Money in Gold Currencies.

In Part One, BOOM and the New Industrial Revolution, authors Vogl and Sinclair forecast dramatic changes in the global economy, with an unprecedented era of growth providing extraordinary opportunities for business: hence the 'boom' scenario. The authors see this new era of economic growth unfolding in most of the countries of the world gathering momentum as we enter the 21st century. As a natural consequence of the new industrial revolution taking place in emerging economies, hundreds of millions of people, if not billions, will benefit and rise from poverty to form the new middle classes of Asia, particularly in China and India, and concurrently in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe. Supplying the customer demands in this emerging market and building the infrastructure for these economies, say Vogl and Sinclair, represent outstanding business opportunities not to be missed. The boom is stimulated by the steady growth and low-inflation policies now being seen in leading industrialised countries as well as by economic policies in dozens of emerging market economies that encourage investment, savings, and price stability. These economic policies are supported by social policies that are raising educational and health levels in many parts of the developing world. The authors argue that these economic and social policies will be strengthened as markets for all manner of goods and services in developing countries are being linked by technology, telecommunications, and multinational investors. Thus, the 'boom' scenario sets the vision for creating wealth in the 21st century and provides the analytical propositions of the book: Very profitable business opportunities will arise, but managing in this new era will be complicated.

Using their vast experience of doing business in both Western and Third World markets, Vogl and Sinclair then tackle in Part Two, Risks, Values and Opportunities, some of the risks associated with the 'boom' scenario by looking at increasing military spending and the populist challenges to fragile democracies in the emerging economies. The road to wealth is not without obstacles and the authors warn that corruption is the single greatest threat to this scenario. Vogl and Sinclair describe this corruption threat in detail and the global actions being taken to curb this disease.

They also argue that the investors and businesses that fare best will be those that make the greatest effort to understand the global, political, and economic trends now emerging and those that strategize accordingly. Smart investors are already positioning themselves to take full advantage of the boom, as are many multinational corporations. They know that the maximization of profit will increasingly depend on going global and they recognize that the fastest rates of economic growth in coming years will not be in the United States, Germany, UK and Japan but in Third World countries.

In Part Three, Doing Business in the 21st Century, Vogl and Sinclair provide their insights into this 'boom' scenario by outlining the strategies and tactics to make full use of it. They describe the critical management considerations for winning in the new era of intensified global business competition where business conditions in almost all markets will be more competitive than ever before. From setting goals, gathering business intelligence, and building contacts to positioning in new markets, BOOM provides corporations with a blueprint for success in this new era. Business leaders should also realise, however, that the political environment of much of the Third World is changing, democracy is spreading and demands for the public accountability of public servants are rising. Thus, multinational corporations will need to change their ways, too, and in this context, partnership is the absolute key. Tomorrow's global corporations must work towards open, honest partnerships with their host country stakeholders: governments, joint venture associates, strategic alliance partners, customers, suppliers and employees. The 'boom' scenario also poses many crucial questions for European and American managers and companies: Will the start of the new century see a fundamental shift in global economic and political power towards Asia? What will be the consequences of this? Can, for example, UK industry compete in the increasingly global market? Is it inevitable that British industry will reduce employment at home as it builds new bases in lower cost, more productive Asian and African locations? Will the boom's creation of a large Third World middle class to mean a vast consumer market also mean a major political challenge to the status quo? Will this emergent Third World middle class provide the impetus for a New World Order? These are the pertinent questions posed by this important new book. Practising what they preach, Vogl and Sinclair bring together the diverse strands of their analysis, highlighting their vision in BOOM by describing the approaches they have taken to build Sutton Resources Ltd, a successful international minerals exploration company listed on NASDAQ. The authors outline their own experiences and demonstrate that they practise what they have described throughout the book. "Sutton does not pay bribes, it earns goodwill, it engages in partnerships and it is winning," they state.

          Book Description

Marketing is defined as the business activities associated with the flow of goods and services from production to consumption. The marketing of agricultural products begins on the farm, with the planning of production, and is completed with the sale of food or other goods to consumers or
manufacturers. Agricultural marketing also includes the supply to farmers of fertilizers and seeds as inputs for production. Overall, marketing is an essential component of successful agriculture but its importance is often underestimated, especially in developing countries.
This book brings together the most significant writings on agricultural and food marketing as related to development over the last 40 years. The editor has selected key sections of significant books and papers, grouped them by their overall theme, and provided introductory commentaries. The book is
intended for students of food and agricultural marketing in the developing countries and will also interest professionals in this subject area.

          Book Description

Massive data acquisition technologies--such as genome sequencing, high-throughput drug screening, and DNA arrays--are in the process of revolutionizing biology and medicine. This concise, user-friendly and interdisciplinary guide to DNA microarray technology is an introduction and a reference for both biologists and computational scientists. The authors describe the underlying technologies and offer an awareness of the "noise" and pitfalls present in the data generated. They also provide an idea of the different data mining techniques and algorithms that are available to interpret data, and the advantages and disadvantages of each in differing situations.

1 out of 5 stars A stringing together of short essays........2005-06-07

This book tries to combine a practical and theoretical point of view concering microarray expermiments and the data analyis thereof. This is a very honourable goal. Unfortunatelly, it fails. An indicator for this can already be seen in the low number of pages. This book has less than 140 pages (I exclude the last chapter and the appendix). It is clear, that it is impossible to discuss in detail this topic in this limited number of pages. Hence, during reading the chapters one gets the feeling, that one reads short essays which are stringed together. At no point the authors go into detail but give only a short idea and references.

I see no reason, why I should recommend this book to anyone. It is in its current form just immature. My prediction: There will be no second edition because even its basic substance is very weak.

Some words to the last chapter (systems biology). This is indeed the most interesting and best chapter of the book (35 pages) without going into details as the rest of the book. I think according to this chapter one realize under which premise this book was written. Unfortunatelly, combining buzz worlds in short essays is not enough for a good book. Sorry guys, I think you can do better!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book. Recommended........2002-11-12

This book has a good balance between experimental and computational methods. It provides a description of DNA microarray technologies, experimental protocols, and the multiple sources of noise and variability. The book contains an insightful overview of the computational issues and available algorithms for data analysis from differential expression, to dimensionality reduction and visualization (e.g. PCA), to clustering (e.g. hierarchical). New methods are described to gether with a good overview of available software, data bases, web sites, and other resources, as well as several "walk through" examples. I particularly enjoyed the last chapter on Systems Biology.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best book on DNA microarrays........2002-10-14

"Very complete : covers both the experimental and the computational methods with specific examples. Written by two top scientists who have worked hard at complementing each other's strengths. I particularly enjoyed the last chapter on Systems Biology which provides a masterful overview of current resaerch trends."

5 out of 5 stars Spirit Animals and the Wheel of Life.......2003-05-31

Many people have lost touch with what brings peace and harmony to their lives. They are also concerned with what's being done to individuals, animals, and the Earth itself in the name of technology. They're looking for help with spiritual development and finding their own centers.

Hal Zina Bennett offers practical help in Spirit Animals and the Wheel of Life, his twenty-third book. In it he continues to explore how we can incorporate universal love in our daily lives. He has chosen the wheel because it has no beginning or end and thus "teaches us how to work with the limits of human knowing and how to find peace with our apparent human differences."

Bennett believes that people are searching for ways to become closer to Earth, and finding the solutions in ancient practices, such as shamanism. He describes "nature-based spiritual practices" that emphasize the connection between Earth and all its inhabitants. Some of these practices involve looking at characteristics of certain animals and using them as models for our own behavior.

He says, however, that animals are not just symbols. They are living creatures. We learn from observing them in their natural environments. Since not everyone can do this, Bennett describes the powers of the seven primary animals with the most to teach us. These are correlated with the seven chakras, for those who find it easier to think in those terms. He provides complete instructions for setting up and using an "ecospiritual wheel," which helps to establish rituals for learning from animals.

Bennett says that he "offers Spirit Animals and the Wheel of Life as a way to begin reclaiming your own ecospiritual connection with our planet--not just as a philosophy but as a practical spirituality and a way of mapping your own path back to the center." Readers will find that he has provided the knowledge and guidance they need to make their own sacred connections.

            Book Description

Japanese is a wonderful language, very different from European languages. It is also the gateway to the rich culture of the exciting and complex island nation of Japan. Some people get intimidated by the prospect of speaking Japanese—worried that it’s just too complex and different—but these fears are unfounded. While you can devote a lifetime to the study of this or any language, picking up the basics of Japanese doesn’t require any more than an interest and a willingness to try something new.

Japanese For Dummies has everything you need to get off the ground with speaking the language. Author and Professor of Japanese Eriko Sato starts you off with the essentials of grammar and pronunciation, giving you a working sense of the language, before showing you Japanese in action. You’ll then explore vocabulary and expressions through dialogues taking place in situations such as:

You’ll also discover social customs, formalities, and manners, from how and when to bow to how to unwrap a present. Whether you simply want to introduce yourself to the Japanese language, say a few words to a neighbor or coworker, or you’re planning a major trip or study abroad in Japan, Japanese For Dummies will enable you to get the basics fast and work towards your own goal at your own pace. You’ll also find out about:

With helpful vocabulary summaries, a mini-dictionary at the end, and an audio CD full of conversations and pronunciations, Japanese For Dummies assumes no prior knowledge of Japanese on your part—providing the perfect guide for a quick-but-thorough, lighthearted-but-not-lightweight introduction to the language.

4 out of 5 stars Japanese for Dummies.......2007-10-17

This is a well written and easy to understand book accompanied by an invaluable CD. It is so helpful even my 7 year of nephew is now very quickly learning the language. We are soon travelling to Japan and know that having had the benefit of this book we have a good chance of understanding the language whereas before we would have been lost in translation. Cant wait to try it out.

1 out of 5 stars Japanese for Dummies doesn't live up to other Dummies books........2007-02-27

If you are serious about learning Japanese, stay away from this book. First, it only uses "romanji", which is rarely used by Japanese people. You can learn the basic Japanese alphabets with a few weeks daily study. What would you think of someone studying English using only Japanese letters? It doesnt make much sense. Romaji should be used to ease you in to the Japanese alphabet, not substitute it. This book encourages that bad habit. Second, it has no concept of "level appropriate" and throws out all kinds of idiosyncratic vocab. You are learning the word for "fresh shrimp" before going over elemtary vocab. I live in Japan, and I quickly discarded this book as soon as I discovered alternatives which actually help you learn Japanese and understand Japanese culture (like the book "Genki").

4 out of 5 stars Japanese for Dummies AUDIO+CD.......2007-02-08

The book gives a very open and care-free attitude, and gives the reader a good incite to the japanese language. It gives full explainations of why things are said the way they are said. Also the tables make it easy to analyse the topics' teachings and learn them with relative ease. How ever it only gives romanji spellings, no hiragana or katakana nor does it explain how to pronounciate some of the wording. For example : 'tabemasu ka', should be pronounced 'tabemaska'. So , conclusion; good but could be improved in some ways

            4 out of 5 stars Nice, but..........2006-11-15

Well, here is what I have to say about this book. Being one of those common 14-year-old anime fans that I am, I decided I really wanted to learn Nihongo (Japanese). So, yes, this is a review from a complete beginner in the Japanese language. I have not yet finished the book, but so far I understand quite a bit more about Japanese sentence structure and customs. But, my problem is that I am not a very speedy learner, and this book does not help you much with memorization of words, suffixes, etc., but instead seems to be a bit straightforward, or something like that. So I have been stuck on chapter 2 for quite a while just trying to fully absorb and understand everything about the grammar basics and such. However, overall, this book should help any beginner in some way if they really stick to it!

5 out of 5 stars This is a simple book.......2006-04-03

The biggest problem people have found with this book is that it has no Japanese characters in it. I was fortunate enough to preview the book in a bookstore before deciding to purchase it. On the first page inside the book, it says that the purpose of the book is to teach phrases and grammar and purpose and will not contain 1 Japanese symbol.

This book is definitely useful if you are wanting to learn conversational Japanese because even though it doesn't teach you how to write it, you have a start in at least understanding what is said.

            I definitely recommend this book.

I bought this book thinking it would provide me with easy to use phrases for a trip to Japan. I found it anything buy easy...it spent too much time providing grammar lessons and had very limited sections for useful phrases. I found other books more useful.

I think the "Dummies" books are a great place to start learning Japanese. It gives you a general understanding of the language and now I'm incorporating other more "workbook" style books into my learning. If you're trying to teach yourself Japanese (like me) I would start here, then look elsewhere for more detailed and comprehensive books. Also, it always helps to make a Japanese friend that can tell you when you're pronouncing stuff wrong!

Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel's innovative fashion ideas-jersey knit fabrics, easy-to-wear garments based on men's sportswear, showy costume jewelry, and the little black dress-challenged the world of fashion head on. This lavishly illustrated book focuses on Chanel the couturiere and her immense influence on the way women choose to look in the modern world. Using previously unpublished material, the fashion icon is examined in depth-her career, her style, her workroom, her customers, and her rivals.

Chanel's revolutionary style is examined in vivid detail, from her emergence in the early twentieth century through her glorious "comeback period" of the fifties and sixites to her legacy as the inspiration behind the exciting contemporary creations of the House of Chanel. As exciting as a front row seat at a couture show, Chanel: The Couturiere at Work is a compelling look at the empire of one of the indisputable geniuses of twentieth-century fashion.

3 out of 5 stars Thin book with glossy photos.......2007-04-08

The writing is not very good - more like a stream of advertorials. There is overwhelming praise of Chanel's work - flattery more like it - without any criticism or analysis. However the pictures are good if you are collecting photos of Chanel's clothing designs over time. "Chanel and Her World" is a better book - it was put together with more thought. "Chanel: The Couturiere At Work" is just a thin book - more like a magazine, with insubstantial prose. Get it used.

5 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any serious fashion collection.......2006-11-06

Chanel: The Couturiere At Work is a lovely survey of fashion icon Coco Chanel and her innovative fashion ideas, and belongs in any collection boasting a focus on fashion. Her style is examined in depth; from her first early creations in the early 20th century through her design changes over the decades and her creations through the House of Chanel. Loaded with black and white and color examples from all the periods, Chanel The Couturiere At Work is a 'must' for any serious fashion collection.

4 out of 5 stars "Coco" and why she mattered ..........2004-12-28

Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel is adequately profiled in this book; from her very humble beginnings to her rise and fall -- and rise again -- this is an insightful biography of the woman and her work, which were for all intents and purposes inseparable. The authors capture not just the drive and determination which propelled Coco to the heights, but shrewdly illustrate how startlingly ahead of her time the designer was, and how much her work and ideas permeate fashion, even to the present day. Don't let the absurdities and excess of so much Chanel on the runway today fool you -- this woman was a visionary in her time, and the quintessence of her designs was paradoxically American; sporty, practical, possessed of a spare elegance, though she was in every way a Frenchwoman through and through. The early drawings of her first dresses are included here and are fascinating. Precious few exist, because -- as they book tells -- Coco Chanel preferred to design on the body, using live models. She was a perfectionist par excellence who introduced trends that transcended their time, and this modest book is a worthy addition to your library if you have any interest at all in the foundations of twentieth century fashion. There are many books on Chanel; I haven't read them all, so this isn't a comparative review, just the opinions of a fan of the couturiere as artist.

(nermin8@yahoo.com) How to recall sectet life of the most influencal fashion Mademmoiselle of all times? For the first Chanel-biographyst it was a nightmare...So we should give a huge respect to evry new Chanel biography, and not just for this reason... Also this biography deserves great respect. Though, some questions aren't yet answered (they may never be), this colourful book, introduces us to some new detailes about the "Chanel cut" as well as Coco herself. Must read to any haute couture lover or dreamer...
