Book Description
The survival of the fastest
Information technology is now essential to business evolution. Companies that invest in IT as a future resource will live to see the future. The rest won't. The hard reality of the new "Information Darwinism," a term coined by author Eric Marks, is brilliantly and provocatively described in e-Darwinism, a look at the make-or-break impact of IT on accelerating the global struggle for market share. The book offers a compelling look at just how the Internet has transformed business strategy and business strategy creation, IT strategy, and manufacturing strategy for manufacturing and service firms, and made significant inroads in driving revenue enhancement and cost savings as well as reducing a firm's time to market. The book also describes how much the ability to leverage IT has become a requirement for measuring-and selecting-future leaders.

A Must-Read Corporate IT Primer.......2002-07-20
I found "Business Darwinism" to be a no-nonsense, intelligently written evolution of information. The reading experience is educating, and at the same time, entertaining. It's a compendium of fascinating, and important events that shaped our current day information systems models. The Darwin, and other evolution analogies that the author selected, as well as the attention-grabbing timelines and events makes for an interesting read. He very nicely positions the IT importance intelligently at the center of the corporate model without overstated importance, and supports it with well-built logic as to why it works. The appeal of the book is that anyone, hanging on to any position on the corporate flagpole will find it both interesting and educational, as it helps him or her understand the core value of information at the business level, without all the technogibberish.

A wonderful complement to corporate strategic thinking...........2002-06-28
Eric Marks has offered us a rich framework of information-age paradigms to complement the secular world of strategic thinking.
A wonderful parallel is drawn between the organic nature of the corporation and the darwinian theory of survival. The author demonstrates that while thinking might be organic or hollistic, the IT organization lacks woefully behind due to its structure and the lack of generative planning that accompanies regular business chaos.
The book makes a conscious effort to stop at theory and frameworks, hopefully to be continued with a plan to action and tools for the implementation in subsequent publications.
Information Mastery is the key to Survival!.......2002-06-22
IT is on the verge of becoming a commodity and an integral part of our every day life. Information is now on our finger tips. Unfortunately, most businesses still don't have good visibility to their operations. In this book, Eric makes the argumaent that all businesses, large or small, must make real-time information part of their daily decision making process. He calls this concept Information-Based Business Modeling or Information Mastery. He discusses at length how companies can leverage real-time intelligence internally as well as with their customers and partners. Marks supports his reasoning exceptionally well with many real life examples. Eric's concepts are based on many years of first hand experience in implementing IT solutions. Business executives will greatly benefit from the concepts presented in this book.
Family stick together.......2002-03-17
Not only has Eric always been successful in the world of business but his creativity and ingenuity put him at the top of his field. His insight is always helpful and our mother says that he is brilliant! Family ties aside, Eric's book is of great help for anyone trying to get ahead or even a toehold in the difficult climate of todays business world.

In Cracking the GRE Biology Test, we'll teach you how to think like the test writers and
·Eliminate answer choices that look right but are planted to fool you
·Be better prepared by focusing on the material most likely to appear on the test
·Sharpen your skills with our GRE Biology Lab
·Score higher by mastering Word Watch, our list of terms that frequently appear on the test
This book includes one full-length practice GRE Biology Test. All of our practice questions are like the ones you’ll see on the actual GRE Biology Test, and we fully explain every solution.

too general, biased test.......2000-11-11
I got this book because it was the most recently published, so I figured that it would have the best review material that encompassed the most relevant subjects on the test. Unfortunately, after taking the practice test included in the book, the practice test offered by ETS, and the real subject test last weekend, I found it to be a pretty poor indicator of what actually showed up on the test. The only thing the review in the book is good for is to give an outline of things you need to know to take the test. I actually used an MCAT study aid to review most of the material, which was a lot more detailed, and a lot more helpful. What's worse is that this book makes you think you're actually learning a lot, when it's really just skimming over a lot of different topics, leaving out a lot of the detail. When I took the practice test, I realized that it was extremely biased towards what the book reviewed so that when you scored yourself, your score would be a lot higher than it should be. Overall, this book could only be used as a general study guide and the test gives you little idea of what the test is really like. The one redeeming thing about this book is that the answers to the tests come with detailed explanations, which I found pretty helpful.
bad........2000-11-04
I was pertty worried about the "thinness" of this book when it arrived - well, well well. GRE is a pretty comprehensive exam, and the questions can be pretty picky. If you were to take the actual exam just on the basis of knowledge from this book, you're pretty hosed up. It would have been better for you to just drag out your introductory bio textbook and look through the figures there, that would be much more helpful. I actually bought an official bio study guide from ETS as well, and I found something funny. The simulation test that they have in Cracking the GRE... is pretty much the same as the old exam in the ETS book, with only a slight modification! I guess they could have done it in one of two ways - one, drill-type book, a question after question, whereby you can train yourself to any type of problems imaginable. Two, they could have made it like a small dictionary/reference type of book which emcompasses must-know stuff, condensed version of textbook, if you like. They tried to make this book to do both of these - bluntly, they weren't successful. I personaly didn't like the way they write the book (this can be said to the general test prep book as well), too casual sounding hey-I'm-your-buddy tone of voice, and the way they waste pages and pages by using a large font (with a bunch of typos!) and taking SO MUCH space in answer key pages....
Reasonably OK, but not enough for 90%+ scores.......2000-01-27
This book is all right--unmarred by the egregious errors and typos that characterize most of the GRE Bio test preparation texts currently on the market. However, it's insufficient if you're trying to achieve really high scores. For that, I recommend the book put out by ETS (Amazon sells it). I found that to be the only practice test that strongly resembled the actual test.
As background, I took the GRE Biology Subject Exam in December 1999, and scored in the upper 97% (if that makes any difference.) I personally found the ETS practice tests the most useful study aid, in conjunction with textbooks Campbell's Biology and Molecular Biology of the Cell by Alberts, et al. This book was a distant fourth, but those whose Bio is quite rusty, or whose scoring goals are more modest, might be quite pleased with it. (The other review books I used--the Barron's book and the one by Ogden--were a waste of time and money.)
GRE Biology.......1999-12-12
It's hard to be enthusiastic about a test study guide, but this one does seem to provide a nice, concise (though basic) review. If it's been a while since you've had some of your basic biology course work, this may be a help, or may at least ease your mind a bit.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent for new kayakers.......2004-04-08
We recently bought two sea kayaks and were looking for an
"encyclopedia" on the basics of getting started with our own boats. The book gives excellent basic informtion on safety, skills, and equipment. The sections on kayak camping gear are really informative. The author uses his own experiences and lots of houmour to make this book not only informative but an enjoyable read.
Complete Sea Kayak Touring.......2001-06-17
A superb book that contains all of the information one could possibly need on the subject, very well-written & entertaining!
good comprehensive book.......2000-02-22
I really liked the book. Its concise well written and goes over the basics of sea kayaking. It has helped me immensely as I'm just starting out. The author's enthusiasm is contagious and he's sense of humor makes the book an easy read.
This is a good all around kayak touring reference book.......1999-05-16
This book describes kayaking at its best. I was especially interested in the section on kayak camping and storage of gear. The book is organized well and covers all facets of kayaking. There are many clear closeup pictures of the topic being discussed and in fact there is at least 1 picture on every page. I enjoyed this book and I ordered a copy for my brother in Alabama.
well written, humorous and informative- a fun read.......1998-11-23
As advertized this book is about the basics of kayak touring. It is a well written and because of the authors enthusiasm- inspirational. For a begining kayaker, like myself, this book has served to fire and intensify my interest in touring. Unlike many books which dwell the dangers and near death experiences of the author-( thus dissuading many of us) this book deals with the great experiences this author and friends have had and inspires us to try to find some of those adventure ourselves. The author writes well, with a great sense of humor, and seems like the kind of person we all wish we had along as we paddled along our own journeys. I am sure we could have hours of animated discussions about the merits of rotomolded kayaks-- I like them. This is an informative book that will serve to introduce the reader to kayak touring, there is still much to be learned but that will come with experience. I believe even experienced tourers would enjoy reading this book.
Customer Reviews:
Better to teach citation than to punish plagiarism.......2006-11-14
Too many college writing guides tell students what *not* to do without giving them sufficient instruction on how to craft original papers. I assign this book to all my undergraduates, and I think it has helped considerably in cutting down instances of plagiarism and other misuse of sources.
Outdated Style Sheet...Doesn't Address Web Sources.......2006-04-26
With a 1998 copyright, one might expect this manual to be a bit outdated. It's unfortunate, because otherwise, it's an excellent reference at a very inexpensive price. The section on electronic sources doesn't adequately deal with the proliferation of electronic databases, websites, and other new media. You'd be better off using one of the many free online MLA formatting pages available on university websites.
Great For Historiography!.......2000-12-18
This book is a great supplement for history students. It is short and to the point, it reads well and it has valuable information about integrating sources into term papers, theses and dissertations. It provides how-to information on writing historically that other writer's manuals do not.
Book Description

It offers an excellent startegic plan to improve businesses.......2002-05-18
I love this book; It is easy to read, simple and contains valuable information and business development tools inside that REALLY helped me improve my business.
John opened my eyes about an essential concept: How to satisfy my customers. In addition, I used the action plan (offered in the book) in my business, and it worked!
This book is A SUCCESS!
A Big Business Weapon.......2001-05-08
I first read this great book in January 1999. Since then, I've made all colleagues across my organization go through it.
The book is a fresh bath of common sense. It combines advanced strategic thinking on how to turn your customers into (as some author says) "raving fans". It also covers hundreds of tactical ideas, from planning to implementation, from hiring the right people to managing the creation of a true customer-centered culture.
I'm not afraid to say this is the very best book on customer service I've read in my life. You can't go wrong with it. John Tschohl is, in fact, the customer service guru!
Just 3 words for you: buy it now.
CUSTOMERS FOREVER.......2001-04-15
I also had the privilege to attend a couple of years ago a full-day seminar with the author in Costa Rica. The seminar -sponsored by the Aymara Group-, was the best of the best. Using the ideas of this book (I strongly recommend chapter two: At The Beginning it Was... The Plan!) my firm has DOUBLED customer retention rates.
Tschohl's approaches service as a proffit-making tool. Chapter one includes a powerful and pragmatic system to measure what poor service is costing you. You won't believe it.
By all means, have your full executive team read this book.
The Guru Speaks!.......2000-09-18
After attending a live 1 day seminar with the author as well as highlighting 570 great ideas in this book, it is no wonder Time and Success Magazine calls John "A Customer Service Guru" The ROI is tenfold!
Achieving Excellence Through Customer Service.......2000-03-14
"It lays out a comprehensive customer service program that can be implemented with relative ease compared with the usual obscure reference textbook.
Customer Reviews:
The Conflict Ain't Structural.......2001-08-31
This is an interesting book about the international tension between rich and poor countries during the 1960s and 1970s, even if it never gets to clearly state the problem. Poor countries often oppose free trade and foreign investment because the governmetns of these countries own and operate most businesses. They want to maintain their secure economic position; what they don't want is competiton. For international competition would almost certainly put government-run enterpises out of business.
So justifications are invented for economically sealing one's country off from the rest of the world. Some highfalutin phrases and indignation are thrown around (e.g., "unequal exchange," "exploitation") and, in the meantime, the governments of these countries continue to impoverish their populations by charging high prices, like monopolistic producers they are. The problem is not the conflict between rich and poor countries; the problem is autocratic rulers of poor countries who, while preaching the gospel of equality, brutally repress their populations, overcharge, take bribes, and hide their wealth in Western banks.

Book Description
This evaluation, prepared in collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank, looks at the effectiveness of Bank assistance to Jordan during the 1990s, from three perspectives: an analysis of the Bank's services and products, development impact, and the contribution of the Bank and its development partners, to development outcomes.
The Bank's strategy since 1990, based on wide-ranging and influential analytic and advisory activities, was to support macroeconomic stabilization and pro-market structural reforms to foster growth. The increased focus on the social sectors was aligned with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The strategy was relevant to the government's priorities outlined in a series of five-year economic and social development plans.
The Bank's programs, in particular, were successful in promoting policy reforms. Substantial tariff, trade and financial sector reforms, together with the removal of disincentives for investment and the privatization of government enterprises, were achieved. Bank assistance also contributed to significant progress in the agriculture, water and social sectors. With Bank support, Jordan made excellent progress in almost all areas covered by the MDGs, and is likely to meet the target levels by 2015. However, these gains have been achieved in an inefficient manner and the cost in terms of public expenditures has been relatively high.
Recommendations outline much needed public sector reform, for despite some public expenditures being curtailed, the country's vulnerability to external shocks, remains high, and the potential for regional instability is also considerable. Future Bank assistance should focus on public expenditure restructuring, enhanced water management and conservation, and poverty reduction.
