Book Description
Low fertility, one of the critical issues in the contemporary world, will persist in the foreseeable future. That is arguably the principal conclusion of this book. Fundamental changes in social security and health care systems, taxation schemes, and migration policies, for instance, are inevitable, unless societies are able to institute effective measures and create favorable conditions for increasing fertility. Such are the unavoidable challenges facing European and other economically advanced countries.
The present study applies the cohort analysis approach to detailed data covering over half of the 20th century for populations of 35 countries. In distinction to most previous studies, that approach is put to use not only for elucidating past trends, but also to capture salient aspects of contemporary fertility patterns. And, beyond that, it is utilized to suggest possible near-term future trends in fertility behavior.

Book Description
This book reviews the experience of the textile and apparel sectors over the post-war period. An econometric study of the cost structure of the industry is undertaken to obtain inferences regarding the existence of structural change and the exact nature of any changes that occurred. A variety of approaches to modeling production technologies in both the textile and apparel sectors are considered. Our results confirm the existence of significant structural breaks which altered the nature of production technologies and economic relationships in these sectors. Our results indicate that a significant amount of labor, which became relatively more expensive as the economy developed after the Second World War, was replaced by capital in these sectors. Our results indicate that new technologies made it easier to substitute capital for labor.
We also give attention to the important role played by textile and apparel imports over this period. Textile trade has traditionally been heavily regulated, most recently by the Multi-Fiber Arrangement of the GATT. Policy changes allowed greater access to developed country markets. This stimulated production in developing countries and thus enhanced the role of imports from developing countries. We argue that this stimulated the structural changes which led to, among other things, the release of labor from these sectors and the concomitant plant closings. These factors also stimulated capital deepening.
Finally, we also consider the issue of substitutability among alternative forms of fibers in the textile sector. Our analysis quantifies demand relationships among natural and synthetic fibers. Our analysis reveals that structural changes often encouraged the use of synthetic fibers.

Book Description
For over a generation, demographic developments have had a crucial bearing on the economic, social and political situation in a number of Middle Eastern countries. Two societies in particular, the Palestinian and the Egyptian, have seen the weft and warp of their fabric significantly affected by natural increase and migration.
This study provides a general outline of Palestinian population growth between 1948 and 1987 and then focuses on the town of Nablus for a detailed analysis of the main aspects of Palestinian migration and high rates of natural increase. The author shows how the recession that struck the Arab oil economies in the early 1980s, by slowing down the migratory movement, shut off the valve that had afforded the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza relief from economic pressures. He also analyses how Jordan, in coping with the resulting demographic and economic pressures, adopted an antinatalist policy despite powerful political and social forces working against such a programme.

Wait for the bug fixes.......2007-01-29
There are many useful features in this edition. It's a shame they don't work. One of the most heavily used features is Find; it finds things and displays a list properly, but gives no links to the View in which the item exists! You have to use the dropdown lists for each of the Views to actually find the View for the item. Find worked in Version 1, so someone must have fixed it. The product is virtually useless without Find, IMO.
Pre-nursing Student? Buy it!.......2007-01-09
I'll tell you in one sentence. It made the difference between a B and A when it came to lab practicals. I've heard it can be used in more advanced classes, too. Ask yourself--do you want to have your access limited by the hours of your school's science center or do you want to have it at home where you can study as long as you need--whenever you want?
Not too much there.......2006-02-15
The textbook has poor illustrations and is meant as a guidebook to the ADAM Interactive Anatomy 4 Student Edition. One would do far better purchasing Netter with the CD, plus the ADAM Practice CD if you like to quiz yourself with the pins in anatomical objects. The ADAM CD is facinating as it allows you to slowly dissect the subject but it lacks many landmarks. I still feel as though the scope of Netter is far superior.

A valuable guide for active travelers to Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks.......2007-06-11
This is the newest guide for the whole family that wants to hike or backpack 70 of the best trails through the combined US/Canadian national parks of Glacier and Waterton Lakes, now Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park.
* A completely revised guide with lots of fun to-do's for kids
* USGS map information and trail profiles
* Informative sidebars and trip finders
In 1932, Glacier National Park in Montana and Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada were joined together to create the world's first International Peace Park. More than a political union, the park was created in recognition that the beautiful, rare, and delicate ecosystems of the northern Rockies shouldn't end at national or political boundaries.
From nature walks and short hikes to glute-burning backpacking trips, this book showcases 70 of the best trails. Each area of the park is accompanied by a trip finder, which shows the difficulty of specific routes and the special highlights of each trail. This new edition also has more complete information blocks with USGS map information and trail profiles.
Mistitled - use it as a hiking guide.......2004-06-03
There is only general info in here for facilities, accomodations and activities other than hiking. The title is deceptive. On the positive side, it has useful maps and data for hikes all of which include a graph showing the altitude change along the path.

Highly recommended for students of nature and ecology.......2001-01-23
In Where The Mountains Meet The Prairies, Graham MacDonald surveys the history of one of the most popular and beautiful national parks of western Canada. The park was named in honor of British naturalist Charles Waterton. MacDonald examines the conservation and ecology of the park; Native American traditions and treaties, townsite development, and the current challenges related to the development, use and preservation of the Canadian national parks. Highly recommended reading for students of nature and ecology, the Canadian park system in general, and the Waterton Lakes National Park and Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park in particular, MacDonald's informative and engaging text is enhanced for the reader with a great number of photos and maps.

Customer Reviews:
A good introduction and survey of the world's largest market.......2004-01-02
As someone who has spent 30+ years living in the world that the authors describe, I found it a good outline of how the grocery business works - from a marketing point of view. The primary value of the book is in the breadth of its coverage, its readability and shortness. I have personally purchased at least a dozen copies to pass on as orientation material for my senior staff who may benefit from more of a big picture of the world they are working in, as well as specialized consultants for our firm that need to understand our milieu. None of these people would read the longer, more comprehensive tomes. So this book fills an urgent need for some of us practitioners.
Light weight.......2003-09-15
Barbara Kahn is a marketing professor at Wharton but I hear only because her husband Robert J. Meyer is also a chaired marketing professor in the same department. She wrote a "quantitative" dissertation for her PhD but Kahn actually is a touchy-feely behaviorist who works on variety-seeking behavior, a very trivial topic in marketing ignored by all serious researchers. She knows nothing about quantification by her own admission. She also says her dissertation was written entirely by her supervisor and not by her, my Wharton friends tell me. This background, or rather, the lack of any background, is reflected in her book. The book falls seriously short of its promise and reads like an alphabetical soup. Don't waste your money on this book when there are much better books available on amazon.com. Better still don't waste your time on this book. It's an IQ-reducer and will leave you dumber and more confused.
My review :).......2003-03-19
Hi. I read some of the book when I took Professor Kahn's Mktg 101 class. (for those of you in the class, not much was on the test about this book). Anyway, although it was recommended for "Anyone who shops" I shop practically everyday and grew up shopping often at grocery stores, but did not find the book to be a good read. I consider myself relatively well educated in business related literature as I took the class during my senior year at Penn's Wharton school. There seemed to be too much academic information which distracted me from enjoying the book and getting a lot our of it. For people on Prof. Kahn's level of marketing expertise this book is likely to be very useful, but it is not as useful to undergrads in Marketing 101 or to the general population.
Insights into consumer behavior and industry responses.......2003-02-12
This book is divided into two parts, one on the state of the industry, and one on consumer behavior. In the first part, the authors do an in-depth analysis of the changes in the retail industry (the move towards discounting, the responses of small grocery retailers to Wal-Mart-style companies, the changes undergoing the supply chain of suppliers to the grocery industry, etc). In the second part, they delve into the available research on consumer behavior, dealing with issues such as store layout and comfort (smells, colors, space, etc). A very solid book, very dense with information.
comprehensive view of marketing in the grocery business.......2000-12-15
First off, let me state that this is by no means a book meant for light reading. It was assigned to me as part of Professor Kahn's (the author) Introduction to Marketing lecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Although not the primary text used in class, the Grocery Revolution provides a comprehensive view of the grocery business. It thoroughly discussed the marketing mix (product, price, place, and promotion). Although the book covers everything very well, it tends to become very repetitive, with the same examples cited over and over. Also, there is a huge presence of numbers and percentages from various studies that become overwhelming after a while. The book, however, does provide a very good view of the whole marketing mix in one industry. It is a good book to use as an example for a concrete view of the basic marketing concepts.

Book Description
From the creation of its first writing implements in 1868 to today's position as the world's second largest producer of fine writing instruments, Cartier has beautifully combined technical innovation with creative audacity. This volume features a comprehensive selection of pieces from Cartier's incredibly inventive repertoire-- pens, inkwells, mechanical pencils, calendars, stationary and other accessories-- dating from the middle of the 19th century to the present, weaving the story of Cartier's production as a joaillier into the broader fabric of the history of writing instruments and the famous clients who chose to use them. The historical pieces-- many of which are shown here for the first time-- are highly sought after by collectors, and even those made during the last decade are commanding record prices in the salesrooms. The Baron de Rothschild, J. P. Morgan, Mona Bismarck, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and Rudyard Kipling are among the distinguished clients who wrote with magnificent pens and pencils made of gold or platinum, incorporating diamonds, jade, sapphires, emeralds, lacquer, mother-of-pearl, or ingenious timepieces and calendars. One-of-a-kind pieces from New York, Paris and London are thoroughly documented and illustrated with photography specially commissioned for this book. The contemporary writing instruments featured here, from the famous Must to the recent Diabolo de Cartier demonstrate how the company's designers are using the company's long-standing traditions to remain at the forefront of imaginative pen and pencil design for the future. This eloquent testimony to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Cartier's designers and craftsmen will be essential to collectors of writing instruments and to all those interested in jewelry and the decorative arts.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Photography, Hasty Text.......2002-02-18
This book depicts Cartier production of pens and writing paraphernalia from the 1860's to the present day. Its best feature is the high-quality photography and reproductions of exquisite photographs from the Cartier archive. It treats the products as luxury rather than practical goods. The focus is not on how well the pens write, but on what they were made of, how beautiful they are, and what celebrity bought them. The text, whether from the author's style or the translator's, rambles on with pasted together anecdotes--like an early draft of a term paper. There is not one critical word about anything Cartier in the whole book. This is a very well done coffee table book for those who love beautiful writing implements. Buy it used. It won't hold value but is a pleasure to look at.
Cartier:Creative Writing.......2001-02-13
I first thought this book was just another brand-name book which displays its own achievements . But then I realize that this book is an excellent and comprehensive account of the history of writing tools, be they from the East or the West. What has carried me away is the history of items like pen holder, paper knife, inkwell, etc...it makes me realize that every object in the world has its own invaluable meaning and deserves its own dignity . In short, the book is an indispensable eye-opener.
