The third volume of Kenneth Arrow's Collected Papers concerns the basic concept of rationality as it applies to an economic decision maker. In particular, it addresses the problem of choice faced by consumers in a multicommodity world and presents specific models of choice useful in economic analysis. It also discusses choice models under uncertainty, giving the basic theory and critiques of this theory based on experimental evidence and applications. Among the major papers are "Alternative Approaches to the Theory of Choice in Risk-Taking Situations," a masterly survey of subjective probability and choice theory, and "The Theory of Risk Aversion," an exposition of the theory of choice under uncertainty.

This field guide to seashores is well explained, especially for beginners encouraged to learn more about the life in tidepools. The color illustrations are also nice and detailed. Buy this one before you start on the original official Peterson Field guides.

Best of 3 books on putting........2001-12-17
Recently, I've read Sones "Light's out putting," Pelz's "Putting Bible," and Farnsworth's "See It & Sink It." Sones is basic stuff. Pelz is interesting technical stuff with some good drills and lots of talk about mechanical aids (most of which he sells). But Farnsworth is by far the most interesting and potentially the most helpful.
Farnsworth analyzes the way we see, judge distance and break, and the problems many of us have with how we see. All the drills and practice in the world won't help much if the the target isn't were we think or visualize it is. And many of us simply don't see straight, even many pros. This book helps figure out our shortcomings in this area, how to overcome them, and how to retrain the way we see.
Has this ever happened to you? You seem to miss most of your putts to the right. You draw a straight line on the ball, line it up to the hole and now find your missing most of your putts to the left! This book will help you figure out what's going on here. It's invaluable.
Poor Vision.......2001-03-04
Farnsworth's "U-factor" and "circuitry rewriting" imitate pseudoscience. Pelz's books are much more scientific and his claims are based upon much more reliable data. Farnsworth claims that the eyes are the dominant sensory system and somehow control the body and mind, none of which are substantiated.
Another good putting book is Todd Sones's Lights Out Putting. It is well written and easier to get through than one of Pelz's books, but Pelz designed his books for the serious student who wants a good reference book.
Excellent book........1999-12-15
I think this book's illustrations could be better, but it is definitely in my top-10 golf book collection. A great companion to Pelz's books.
A Master Stroke.......1999-10-04
When I first skimmed this book, I felt it was poorly illustrated and the writing was very marginal. However, upon reading it through, I think it is one of the best golf books ever written, mainly because it spells out in detail how one can really begin to use his vision on the putting green, something that's alluded me for the 30+ years I've played the game. The exercises and tools are SIMPLE and tremendously effective. It is a joy to get a book you can use right away--and see results almost immediately. A genuine breakthrough golf manual for the guy who seriously wants to improve.
The eyes lead the body... Farnsworth's approach is unique........1998-11-14
I have read a lot of golf instructional books and this is the most unique. Dr. Farnsworth's basic yet profound concept is that the what and how you see leads all else in putting. I found I am missing to the left because I see the hole to the left. Drills, tips, and sklill test in the book have helped me lower my score 3 strokes (I am now a 5 handicap).

This unique book is a 'MUST READ' for all college and university students!
In terms of reading strategies covering the broad spectrum of academic disciplines, this is an excellent strategy guide. I would even say, the best in the genre!
The author has done a marvellous job of identifying specialised reading techniques as well as specific thought patterns for readers to anticipate when reading in the academic disciplines.
Take a look at these chapters:
Chapter 9: Reading in the Social Sciences;
Chapter 10: Reading in Business;
Chapter 11: Reading Literature;
Chapter 12: Reading Mathematics;
Chapter 13: Reading in the Natural Sciences;
Chapter 14: Reading in the Technical & Aplied Fields;
In each chaper, the author even provides ideas and insights to help you adapt your study techniques to each discipline.
Another interesting aspect of this book is the author's treatment of essential vocabulary building skills. I particularly like her creative concept of learning word parts to generate the multiplier effect.
Like any other reading techniques book, this book also has plenty of reading assignments and practical exercises across the disciplines.
When compared to Shirley Quinn's 'Active Reading in the Arts & Sciences', which also covered disciplne-specific reading skills, and which I had also reviewed, this book definitely has a much broader scope and also a much farther depth.
Strategy-wise, I would add that this book is an excellent reading companion to Eleanor Leo's 'Powerful Reading, Efficient Learning' and Anne Phillips/Peter Sotiriou's 'Steps to Reading Proficiency', which I had reviewed earlier. Together, they will help college and university students to get more out of what they read. Guaranteed!
