Book Description
In this comprehensive study leading scholars consider the historical evolution of the Chaebol and their contribution to the Asian financial crisis. They analyze the Korean government's response, and outline an agenda for financial and corporate reform. While Asian business conglomerates have been successful agents of growth, they have long had a number of organizational and financial weaknesses that make them vulnerable to shocks. Nowhere was this more true than in Korea, where the large corporate groups known as Chaebol have dominated the economic landscape.

Customer Reviews:
Great lab book for microbiology.......2003-10-04
I found this book to help me a lot for microbiology lab. The pictures are excellent quality and serves as a great reference for the microbiology text. I also used the following:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide had great questions and answers and helped me pass micro with ease. It showed me what to focus on for class exams.
COVERED ALL THE LAB FUNDAMENTALS.......2003-03-12
This "Microbiology Laboratory Fundamentals and Applications" is not a very big volume, but it left no question unanswered as regards it scope. From bacteriology to immunology, mycology to virology; George Wistreich provided valuble practical guides here.
Apart from shedding light on general lab techniques, this practical-oriented book directs its reader on how to isolate, culture, and identify various species of micro-organisms. It analyzed the basics of microscopy, staining methods, preparation of culture media, optimal incubation, and many others.
Designed for the inexperienced, this book used simple directives in all of its chapters. Most microbiology and medical lab science students will value its guidance. Its focus is medical laboratory; yet, it did not fail to browse many techniques which are of industrial importance.
This book will be of great benefit to any student who relies on it. Meanwhile, its rather high price force me to add that there are some cheaper alternatives in the market.

History Alive.......2007-03-09
Actually this is a historical tome of some note. Interesting but very hard to learn from. The point of this book is to show training as it was when Judo was first developed. Every JuJutsuist and Judoka should have this in his/her library.
Worth the price and the time.
The roots of modern Jujutsu.......2007-01-12
Many people know Kano created Judo, but few know of his contribution
to Jujutsu.
The roots of modern Jujutsu began at the end of the 19th Century
when Kano Jigoro was given the task of taking the old, separate schools
of Jujutsu, taking the best of what was, and creating a hand=to-hand
combat school befitting the new, modernised Japan. This new art,
Kano Jujutsu was adopted rapidly by schools and military, as well as
progressing overseas, gaining practitioners and advocates such as Theodore
Roosevelt. Kano Jujutsu still survives in martial arts schools, albeit in
very few, and as hand-to-hand combat in many modern militaries.
The Complete Kano Jujutsu is a reprint of the classic text, demonstrating
many techniques, as well as an introduction to Kuatsu (healing and first
aid techniques).
This is not a book for beginners, as requires knowledge of techniques,
but serves well to augment training. A must have for people want to
delve deeper into martial arts.
Interesting, but not judo.......2006-09-14
This book has nothing to do with Jigoro Kano's Kodokan judo. By the time this book was published most of Kano's Judo as it is now known was all ready in existence including the Nage no Kata, Ju no Kata, Kime no Kata, and most of the Gokyo no Waza. The book Judo Kyohon published only 2 years later in Japan in 1908 detailed the Gokyo no Waza and Nage no Kata in their entirety and every technique therein is recognizable in name and form when compared to modern judo. Irving Hancock was a shameless huckster who had some instruction in an older form of jiu-jitsu completely unrelated to Kano's Kodokan Judo. He detailed this form in an earlier book entitled Jiu-Jitsu Combat Tricks published in 1904. He falsely labeled this later book The Complete Kano Jiu-Jitsu as a marketing ploy to try and trick buyer's into thinking they were getting something of Kano's judo, which by that date had gained total dominance in Japan. Very few of his techniques bare any resemblance to Kano's Judo as it was practiced then or now. This book is an interesting look at old style jiu-jitsu and worth buying, but Hancock's claim that it ever had anything to do with Kano's school is totally false.
Contains Judo's "Leg Locks"!.......2004-07-12
The manual: 'THE COMPLETE KANO JIU-JITSU [Judo]' (c. 1906, 1961) by Harry Irving Hancock and Katsukuma Higashi, may surprise those who have not seen photographs of combat Judo at its inception. Filled with 1906 photographs of Judo "tricks", THE COMPLETE KANO JIU-JITSU displayed a Judo which would not be recognized in today's dojo.
This style of 1906 combat Judo portrayed in THE COMPLETE KANO JIU-JITSU was practiced with the standard white Uwa-gi Judo top but with black leggings with leather knee-pads, and while wearing black shoes. The techniques or "tricks", as the author described them, resembled free-style wrestling with take downs and few throws.
Also, clearly recognizable are the strangle holds and pinning techniques of Tenshin Shinyo Ryu (School of the Natural Way) Jiu-Jitsu and the throwing techniques of Kito Ryu (To Rise and Fall) Jiu-Jitsu; the two styles of Jiu-Jitsu from which the genius Dr. Jigoro Kano developed his Judo. But some have noted that these techniques may be more representative of Tsutsumi Hozan Ryu jiu-jitsu, as practiced by Katsukuma Higashi.
The book THE COMPLETE KANO JIU-JITSU contained the 1906 photographs of two Judo leg-locks (photos No.424 & No.425), and an early Judo leg throw (No. 419), a kick to the groin from standing (No. 416) and from the ground (No. 417).
Overall, THE COMPLETE KANO JIU-JITSU is a superb reference source for the hopologist who wishes to delve into the martial arts past and on Judo history. This work should be read in conjunction with KODOKAN JUDO by Dr. Jigoro Kano, to provide an excellent insight into Judo's development!
One of the best from a historical viewpoint.......2004-01-21
This book holds a very special place in the history of martial arts education and is certainly one of the most entertaining. I would love to know co-author Hancock's story, especially the circumstances of his training in Japan. Beyond the historical value of this text though lies its usefulness; the techniques shown are the same as those practiced today, and the reader will undoubtedly find some that are not taught. However, one should not get carried away. If you are looking for a book that shows you techniques, there are any number of them on the market that are better than this one. However, if you want a glimpse into the Real Thing, i.e., jiu jitsu as it was practiced in the Olde Days, then this book stands pretty much alone. As a Ketsugo and Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner, all I can say is...this book is fascinating.
Book Description
A note from the author: "Writing is a solitary and often scary enterprise. I alone have heard your silent screams, so I have written this book to help you achieve what everyone who has the courage to live the creative life deserves: complete, utter, slavish adoration and worship. Also: incalculable wealth that insulates you from the concerns of ordinary people."
And there you have it. Fondling Your Muse is John Warner's innovative and slightly insane book of instruction for those who want to write, and those who think they already can. It's packed with quirky (possibly deranged) advice guaranteed to make you laugh out loud in the most embarrassing fashion possible. You know what we mean. It also includes a special chapter entitled "Everything Stephen King Knows About Writing Successfully: Plus Some Things I Know That He Doesn't Because He Isn't That Special." No other book currently available has this chapter!
And Fondling Your Muse provides the kind of wise, insightful guidance that's missing from all of those self-serious, mind-numbingly awful books that promise riches and fame by writing only 20 minutes a day.
Let's say you're looking for a tried-and-true recipe for literary success. Warner reveals all of the best ones, including these succulent concoctions:
* Contemporary Romance Quiche al la Nicholas Sparks ("Tasty with a side of hackneyed potatoes.") * Tom Clancy Techno-Thriller Surprise ("Preparation is usually subcontracted to others.") * Chick-Lit Cacciatore ("Satisfies many, every single time. I can't explain how either.") * Harlequin Romance Salad ("Thoroughly rip bodices, pound prose until purple, and combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl.") * John Grisham's Legal Thriller Stew ("Boil in pot until ingredients bubble over line of believability.") * Contemporary American Literary Fiction Flambe ("Served in smaller and smaller quantities as the years go by.")
Mmmm...tasty.
Even really famous people endorse Warner's work:
"Fondling Your Muse is brilliant in the same way the most distant stars in the galaxy are brilliant. If it's a really clear night and you tilt your head to the side and squint, you sort of see it." -- Dave Eggers
It doesn't get any better than that. So go ahead - get Fondling today!

The Cult of McSweeney's skunks me again........2007-05-12
John Warner, Fondling Your Muse (Writer's Digest, 2005)
I was unaware, until faced with the cover of this book, that Warner was the editor of McSweeney's, and as soon as I saw that, I had a good idea of what to expect. Warner didn't disappoint me; the book is mildly amusing at times, but never anywhere near as funny as it thinks it is, full of annoying political snipes that have nothing at all to do with anything, and easily forgettable. In other words, a lot like McSweeney's itself.
That said, buried beneath the satire there could well be a pretty good how-to book. A lot of Warner's core advice (or the opposite of a lot of Warner's core advice, depending on the topic) is sound. Naturally, there's nothing you haven't seen before, but then, when was the last time you picked up a writing book that had anything truly original to say?
A little more consistency and a better sense of humor and I'd have recommended this. **
Sense of humor required (aka I Loved It!).......2007-04-25
First, I caution those looking for more in-depth advice on actually writing a decent novel to choose a more serious, mainstream tome--this ain't it! :)
What a way to turn the writing advice genre on its head. While there IS real advice to be found in John Warner's "Fondling Your Muse," it's just buried in the folds of all that humor. I had to keep reminding myself to pay attention between the lines to information I was reading for. This is witty as hell, tongue-in-cheek, hilarious (as the title would suggest, of course). And I hope no one takes all of Warner's suggestions seriously--I can see the lawsuits now!
Read Warner for his humor, for his in-sight into how the book world "really" works, for his dripping wit and sarcasm--it's worth the chuckles and outright laughter. "Fondling Your Muse" is the ideal antidote I needed to counteract the sturm-und-drang self-imposed reading list I've been working through lately. Awesome stuff!
Fabulous!.......2006-12-28
People must have thought I was losing my mind, as they passed while I was reading this book to pass some time before work. I was laughing so hard I had to purchase it; its a valuable must have for my "writing reference" collection.
While all the advice is to be taken with a shaker full of salt, this book was wonderfully helpful. It reminded me not to take myself so seriously all the time; writing is meant to be fun and I've let it become too much of a chore. I know I'll be flipping back through this one every time I need a good laugh or a little tongue-in-cheek advice!
Not What It Appears To Be.......2006-12-08
I gave this book one star because you can't give no stars. Like other reviewers, I am taking this book back to the store. It's not a book of writing exercises and writing advice, but a satire of such books. If you want a laugh, read it in the coffee shop of the bookstore and put it back. Don't buy it.
Oddly Helpful...A Must-Buy!.......2006-10-09
As a writerly aspirant, I found this book to be both oddly helpful, and a must-buy.
It was oddly helpful in a way not unlike when you're reading a gut-bustingly funny book while at the same time eating a bowl of Friendly's "Forbidden Chocolate Explosion" ice cream, and suddenly all of the ice cream comes spurting out of your nose because you just came upon the most hilarious passage you've ever read, and then you realize how "a propos" the name of the ice cream is, and you clean yourself up and go to the store because that was the last of the ice cream, and you're searching the frozen food section while trying to ignore the awkward-yet-gawking looks you've been receiving from the other shoppers, and an acquaintance comes up to you and you say hi, and he asks how it's going and what that crusty brown spot is on your left cheek, and you're like "Crusty brown spot? What crusty brown spot?", and he shuffles his feet on the linoleum and coughs in an unconvincing manner and makes a hasty exit, and you start getting an uncomfortable feeling and rush to the bathroom, but you don't know where it is so you ask the stock guy in aisle 3, and he refuses to make eye contact while pointing you in the approximate direction, and you finally get in there and see your flourescently-lit reflection in the mirror and you're all "Oh my god! I've got Friendly's 'Forbidden Chocolate Explosion' on my face! Thank goodness somebody told me! That could have been really embarrassing!"
This book was a must-buy because a few weeks ago (I think it was a Tuesday), two thugs (who later confessed to having been hired by the author) accosted me in an alleyway and shoved a copy of "Fondling Your Muse" at me while grunting, "Must buy. Must buy." They were wearing trenchcoats, so...
This is a mighty good book. If you want to write, if you want to be rich, if you want to be famous, if you think you might need some advice, look no further.
I've read the book and look how good I write now!!! To borrow a phrase from the matchless John Warner, "Woo-hoo!". Thunderous applause, critical accolades, and unimaginable wealth is (are?) no longer a pipe dream for me.
How 'bout you?

The True Index of an Era.......2004-12-18
For those of you who dont know, Mick Mercer is a journalist who documented the explosion of the "goth scene" in MANY countries and over MANY MANY years. This INDEX, while not a spoon fed description of "What is goth" or "why does my 14 year old wear black" is an EXCELLENT source of the community of dark artists across the world- the very thing the book was intended to be and executes more than successfully. The book is now several years old, and so is a testament to an era when goth still had a bit of interesting things going on...I believe now as I did when I first got the book when it came out, that it was intended for goths to be what the internet later became: a resource and reference... or to the seriously inclined a way for them to get exposure to the meat and potatoes.
If you are looking for A book to read on the sub-culture, Mick Mercer does have several books on that subject as well. He was there and lived through it in a way most of us, even those of us who have been actively "in the scene" for decades, couldnt possibly have known.
The Hex Files: A Great Reference for its Time.......2004-11-16
Mick Mercer's "The Hex Files" is not a sit down and read type of book. If you're looking for a detailed history of goth culture to read straight through, this isn't what you need.
The book is a reference, set up like a small encyclopedia of different countries' involvement in the goth scene. It's content includes bands, fanzines, businesses, and important individuals. The year of publication was 1997, so some of the information is a bit out of date. However, it's very common for information in this scene to quickly become obsolete, and is no fault of Mercer. For some, the book has become a bit of a keepsake to attest to the late nineties. If you are seeking a more recent publication, try "21st Century Goth," also by Mercer.
The book also include resources for those seeking out the pagan, vampire, and fetish scenes. Whether you like it or not, these have become aspects of the goth scene and therefore deserve to be included for those who are interested.
The entries contain very short commentary, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs, and contains engaging black and white photos. If you're not too keen on the content, the book is worth its price merely for the great photography of bands, individuals, magazine covers, and artwork.
Please take note.......2003-09-10
This book is now seven years old. People buying it should either be aware it's been out for ages, or at least appreciate that it predates Net popularity, meaning I had to get info printed in overseas fanzines to get a lot of the International responses I did. The content from certain countries will therefore seem small or incomplete. As to people saying this is pretentious, that's their assessment, which is fine, but I know what bands are Goth and which have simply had an influence on Goth. It isn't a subtle difference, and it shouldn't be hard to work out. The book stands as the best record from its time, of what was possible to find out without bankrupting myself on postal costs. People may look at it now and regard it as curious, but this is now a period piece. It stands on its own merits as having more info than was available to anyone at the time, and beautiful photos, and at no point did it set out to get to the root of what the Goth culture was, as I made it clear at the time that it was an International Guide, following my previous books which had a European bias.
not what i thought it would be.......2003-07-16
i got this book last year and had looked forward to it's arrival for what seemed like an eternity. when it got here, i was let down. it's filled with snippits of information on various things, like bands, stores and whatnot. it's not actually a book to read. it's more of a reference guide. there is some info in there that is useful, but it's not what i thought it would be.
The pretenciousness of Mercer giving " goth " a bad name..........2003-03-07
To keep this short and sweet, Mercer denounces the Cure and the Banshees' influence on the genre ( although both bands are MUCH,
MUCH more than " goth " ), seems to be of the opinion that the current Valor version of Christian Death is indeed the same band
despite the fact it is now third rate metal ( and that the immortal Rozz, Gitane, David Glass, George Belenger, James McGerty and Rikk Agnew all are no longer in the equation ).
At least he has the good taste to like London After Midnight,
even though they, too, are far, far, more than a " goth " band.
And Corpus Delecti, another wonderful band. But Mercer's book in pretencious; sterotyping the genre, and the lack of info on the
subculture is unforgivable; given this egomaniac's know-it-all-attitude. Much of info here is out of date as well. ---Funeral Rites 2
