    Book Description

The Transformation Imperative shows why change initiatives like reengineering, continuous improvement, and employee empowerment, when implemented by themselves, are not enough to achieve dominance in today's rapidly evolving business environment. Only when change programs are deep and fully integrated across the organization can an enterprise truly be transformed. Drawing on the research efforts of Manufacturing 2000, a collaborative project between leading multinational companies and the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland, The Transformation Imperative presents useful tools and a practical framework for analyzing, implementing, and measuring change programs as well as for linking big-picture strategy with the nuts-and-bolts of change management.

I purchased this book for my Microbiology class and it is very helpful. My teacher uses the same figures and tables as in the book, which are easily readable/understandable especially when you think of each process as steps. My advise is to buy the book if you need to and take advantage of the given website that is given to you in the beginning pages to test your knowledge.

          Book Description

Biology is a comprehensive introductory biology textbook for non-majors or mixed-majors courses that covers biology in a traditional order from the structure and function of the cell to the organization of the biosphere. The book, which centers on the evolution and diversity of organisms, is appropriate for a one- or two-semester course.

It's no wonder that Sylvia Mader's Biology continues to be a text that's appreciated as much by instructors as it is by the students who use it. The ninth edition is the epitome of Mader's expertise: Its concise, precise writing uses an economy of words to present the material as succinctly and clearly as possible, thereby enabling students -- even non-majors -- to understand the concepts without necessarily asking the instructor to explain further.

This is a very well written and easy to understand book. It is very similar to

Biology: Concepts & Connections with Student CD-ROM (5th Edition)

in content but it has clearer pictures in my opinion. What this one is not, it is not the 'lab manual' even though its reffered to it as such because it does not contain the experiment excercises the companion book by the same title contains. This is just a paperback textbook.

2 out of 5 stars If your course requires it, nothing you can do.......2002-10-24

I had to use this textbook for a class, which you probably do to. So you probably have to buy this one. It was okay, not hard to read, but I won't be keeping it as a reference work. The authors definitely have an agenda, promoting certain kinds of nutrition over others with very little reasoning, also seems to act like a lot of alternative medicine couldn't possible work even when there are studies to the contrary. I guess it handles the rudiments of biology okay. I will be selling this when I'm finished with this semester.

Oh, and there appears to be both a hardcover and a paperback. I bought the paperback used, and it seems to have matched perfectly with the hardcover. Never even used the CD.

            3 out of 5 stars Decent.......2006-01-09

This book is not nearly as comprehensive or thorough as Campbell's Biology, but it does do an ok job with the explanations. The book has a lot of charts that do a good job of summarizing the material, which is a feature the earlier editions of Campbell's lack. Some of the illustrations are as good as Campbell's, but I have noticed some inaccuracies in a couple of the illustrations, even though I have the fourth edition. This is not so good for Intro Students who don't know the difference yet. It also places too much emphasis on Linnean terminology (class, phylum, genus, etc), and not enough on cladistics/phylogenetics (which biologists use preferentially now).

The study guide questions at the end of each chapter aren't very good. They swing wildly in scope, with one question asking minutiae not covered very well in the preceding chapter, the next asking about broad concepts, and some big take-home points missed entirely.

There's also not many practical differences between the 4th and 5th editions. If you have to get it, buy a 4th edition and save yourself a lot of cash. If you don't have to get it, buy Campbell's Biology (5th, 6th, or 7th edition is fine) instead.

2 out of 5 stars Does not explain concepts well.......2003-06-26

I used this book for 2 semesters of introductory biology in college. After the first month, I became frustrated with the poor explanations. I asked a few friends and they recommended Biology by Campbell. What a lifesaver!

I also continued to used this book and also found a number of errors in the pictures. This cost me a few points on tests and quizzes, so this added to my low opinion of this book. I also became hesitant to trust what it was telling me, particularly when there were differences between Campbell and this book.

It has a nice layout, and it breaks topics into meaningful chunks; the explanations were okay most times and simply inadequate too frequently for me. On a scale of 1 to 10, this book is about a 3 or 4 and Campbell is a 9. But reading Campbell also takes more time and effort.

              Book Description

The fifty fly patterns described in these pages have proven reliable in the fly-fishing streams and rivers of northern New Mexico over many years. Developed by thirty locally respected tyers, they are not widely known or sold commercially outside the region. None are either legally patented or copied from widely known standard flies or patterns.

This rich and varied group of patterns reflects diverse approaches to fly-fishing and tying. The authors organize the fly patterns by type: dries, nymphs, wets, streamers, midges, and terrestrials. Each section describes the shared traits of the flies, their construction and usefulness, and the best methods for fishing with them. The description of each fly includes a thumbnail history, recipe, tying instructions, and a photograph. An appendix provides recipes for additional useful patterns described in other manuals. The authors cannot guarantee fly-fishing success but they do promise fun at fishing and tying.

Illustrates fishing flies developed by locally-respected fly tyers, with step-by-step instructions for fly fishing success in northern New Mexico.

              5 out of 5 stars Nicely Done!.......2007-06-12

This is a nicely done regional book. It is spiral bound, which I really like in a fly pattern book. Good crisp b&w photo of each fly pattern. The "fly recipes" and step by step directions for tying each fly are well written. The b&w illustrations are very nicely done as well. If you plan on fly fishing S CO or N NM, and tye your own flies, you will want to get a copy well ahead of your trip so you have plenty of time to try some of these patterns out.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to its billing.......2001-09-05

If you live in New Mexico or southern Colorado and fish or tie flies you will like this book. It catalogs unusal regional fly patterns and the waters to fish them. I, of course, haven't tied or fished all of the patterns in the book but its an enjoyable read. Because these flies are not going to be found in even some of the best fly shops in the region the recipes and tying instructions are worth the price. The instructions also include a variety of techniques that are not as well described in other fly tying manuals. The only negative I can think of is the lack of color pictures, but I have a good enough imagination not to need them. Besides I'm a sucker for books from the University of New Mexico Press.

I have used this book professionally and personally for ten years and it is absolutely excellent in every way. It is well organized, clear, succinct, intuitive, and thorough. The current sharp decline in the importance placed on correct grammar and usage, which is essential to effective communication, could be curtailed if only everyone owned a copy (and would read it). Those horrific emails sent by intellectually and physically lazy persons should be intercepted as spam; they are at least as offensive.

I'm the author of several popular computer programming books that amazon sells. The problem is, I'm not really a very good writer; my background is all technical. My Copy Editor recommended this book as the single best reference -- better than the Chicago Manual of Style or others. An excellent choice!

5 out of 5 stars New York Discovers Common Sense.......2000-12-18

I have a stack of grammar books at hand on my desk, from the classic Strunk & White's The Elements of Style to the witty and wise books of Patricia T. O'Conner, grammar grinch of the New York Times. None is so comprehensive and usable as the NY Public Library's guide. From welcome advice about "bias-free usage" to "the essential comma," the Library Guide gives down-to-earth and much-needed commentary about the problems writers face every day. My favorite section is Misued and Easily Confused Words, worth reading for its entertainment value alone. I've been a professional writer for over 30 years and only wish I could have had this volume with me all that time. I've tried the rest, this is the best. I just bought my son, who is working on his first book, a copy for Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! News you can use!.......1999-01-07

As a professional writer and editor I have found this book to be the best resource for my everyday style and usage quandries. (And I have used several style guides.) It has been a great help in the last couple of months as I have been writing an editorial style guide for my employer. It's easy to navigate and provides information that can be understood by those of us who aren't rocket scientists. It also explains style and grammar issues and gives real-life examples.

5 out of 5 stars Good pictures and text.......2006-10-03

This book takes us from decade to decade from the 50's to now with an examination of social, cultural, economic, and historical factors both setting the backdrop to and influencing changing fashions. This is an intermediate book in fashion, if you compare it to picture-only books to the other end of the spectrum where text dominates (often no pictures), and we see a treatise on aesthetic theory, anthropological roots, feminist writings, and studies on human sexuality and psychology.

This book is a very light introduction to the type of questions you see in more advanced texts, but will not alienate the dilettante fashionista or costumer. The pictures provide exemplary examples of the styles discussed, and the chapters summarize everything quickly enough to have a solid overview of our recent fashion history. Again, I am sure this book will gain lots of interest, whether for browsing or seriously perusing an interest in a compelling aspect of human history and society. Check Steele's other books as well--she writes with insight, but doesn't overdo it with the dry academic stuff; she also has excellent taste with her picture selection.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent fashion primer for the last 50 years of the 20th C.......2003-11-09

This book has both beautiful photographs and informative text. The only reason I took off one star is that I think more photographs from each designer should have been included. I especially would have liked to have seen a few more photos of clothes from American designers from the 1990s. Throughout the book, the author mostly displays clothes made by European designers. I would not have expected much attention to be focused upon American designers before 1980s or 1990s. Arguably, it was not until the 1990s that American fashion really started to influence Europe, instead of the other way around. Because this reversal of influence was such a change, I would have expected more attention to be paid to it visually. Therefore, the lack of representation in this era makes me think that American designers were somewhat shortchanged in this book. However, I agree that all the designers selected, both European and American, did heavily influence their own time periods.

This book covers Post War 1940s through 1990s. In each era the author focused on a few key designers. The author chose Balenciaga, Balmain, and Dior to represent the 1940s and 1950s. The author primarily showcased Correges, Yves Saint Laurent, and Quant to represent the 1960s. Halston and Yves Saint Laurent were the focus of the 1970s era. More designers are represented in the 1980s. The book has one or two photos from Chanel, Lacroix, Blass, Herrera, Azzedine Alaia, Armani, Gaultier, Comme des Garcon, and Issey Miyake, among a few others. The 1990s are represented by a photo or two of designs from Versace, Anna Sui, Chanel, Tom Ford for Gucci, Galliano, Donna Karen, Westwood, Calvin Klein, and Prada.

Just as it is the maxim for fashion in general, so is it for this book in particular...less is more. The photos in this book capture the essence of each era and the text details the stylistic atmosphere to which each designer contributed. I highly reccommend this book. Despite having access to it at the library, I plan on buying it.
