Book Description

This volume presents mathematical formulas and theorems commonly used in economics. It includes both formulas like Roy`s identity that are peculiar to economics and formulas like Leibniz's rule that are common to many areas of applied mathematics. The volume is meant to be a reference work, to be used by students in conjunction with a textbook and by researchers in need of exact statements of mathematical results. The volume is the first grouping of this material for a specifically economist audience.

4 out of 5 stars All the formulae an economist needs.......2007-03-01

Economists' Mathematical Manual is a very good book. It gives in a very concise and clear way all an economist needs as far as maths and statistics are concerned. I would recommend the purchase!

3 out of 5 stars Helpful but not complete.......2006-09-27

This book is very helpful for any economist, especially for students. It includes many formulas that are common in economics. I used the book a lot during my first-year phd course and it was very helpful because it is pretty compact. However, be careful as there are some minor errors in the book. Second, I cannot recommend it if you are interested mainly in econometric theory. You will find the basic distributions and a couple of other formulas, however there are still too few formulas about GMM or Filters etc. All in all I would recommend you the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference and then some.........2002-10-25

This book is great. It provides an outstanding reference tool for graduate, but also undergraduate students. Even if you're not entirely into studying economics, and only come up against it occasionally, you can get your money's worth with this title. I purchased this as a reference while finishing undergraduate work and I'm sure it will serve me well in graduate school as well. Don't miss this, and buy a copy while it's available.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Condensed and Extremely Useful!.......2001-01-19

Sydsaeter et al. have compiled what must be the most condensed reference book in the field, given its amazingly broad scope but small number of pages. Just a few of the multitude of topics covered in this book are set theory, dynamic optimization, vector spaces, convexity, determinants, risk aversion theory, and probability distributions. The presentational format is essentially that of an extensive list, with copious notes in the margins.

The brevity of Economists' Mathematical Manual is simultaneously its greatest strength and its greatest weakness. The strength obviously lies in its diverse scope. Few books could claim to be authoritative over such a wide spectrum of subfields of economics.

Yet the lack of exposition can also be perceived as a weakness. This book is extremely useful as a reference, but first-year Ph.D. students should be warned that it should be considered supplemental only. A textbook such as Simon and Blume's Mathematics for Economists or Chiang's Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics should be the reference of first recourse for anyone encountering mathematical economics for the first time.

4 out of 5 stars handy little book.......2000-10-14

I got this little book when I was in college studying economics and kept it throughout grad school in econ. It's been surprisingly useful, mostly because it contains formulas and no extraneous text. A pocket version would be even better.

          Book Description

Executives in all industries prize innovation as a key ingredient in market relevance, brand awareness, and bottom-line growth. Too often, though, innovation is relegated to traditional cradles of creativity like R & D and marketing. Now this important new book shows how innovation can be a boon not just to a company's product line, but to every facet of its business.

"Doing innovation" company-wide requires not only an attitude of innovation from every individual, but a corporate commitment to a new organizational model, in which every department is expected to innovate. Empowering companies toward that end, the author discusses:

          * idea generation, creating new models, and breaking rules * the roles of individuals, groups, and corporate culture in innovation * assessing the organization's infrastructure and resources * overcoming resistance and identifying what makes innovations fail * and every other component of creating economic value through innovation.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars How innovation really works.......2005-01-25

If you're looking for a definitive guide to the way that innovation really works, then this book is for you. With decades of experience as a successful innovator, including 25 years at 3M, Mr. Gaynor knows the subject well.

There are abundant gems of wisdom in this book, many of which challenge conventional thinking about innovation. As Gaynor emphasizes, every organization needs to innovate, and innovation must permeate every department of the organization. Innovation is only meaningful when it is oriented to customers and produces beneficial results in the marketplace.

While the entire book is excellent, two chapters offer great quick takes on innovation. Chapter 11, "The Virtual Innovation Prevention Department," is a roadmap for how to kill innovation, and Chapter 13, "Making Innovation Happen" is the guide for how to make innovation work in the real world.

I enthusiastically recommend this book for anyone who is serious about promoting innovation in their jobs and organizations. Come to think of it, that should describe us all!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent text on innovation.......2003-04-19

This text is a great treatment of the topic of innovation. Innovation often seems as a random event or personal characteristic. Mr. Gaynor's book describes a more structured framework by which innovation can be approached, encouraged, and fostered. It describes how organizations can be formally, although possibly unconsciously, resistant to innovation in products and processes. The first chapter is required reading and the chapter on the Innovation Prevention Department would be funny if it did not ring so true. A keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent text on innovation.......2003-04-19

This book is an excellent treatment of the topic of innovation. Innovation is a difficult subject to address because it is believed that innovation is a characteristic that either exists or does not. Mr. Gaynor's book put structure to it and describes ways that organizations are formally, even if unconsciously, opposed to innovation and how it can be remedied. The first chaper should be required reading and the chapter on the "Innovation Prevention Department" would be funny if it did not point out painful realities. A keeper.

            5 out of 5 stars Maturing or Self-Destructing Humanity?.......2002-05-23

I think this book has the best comprehensive over-view of humanity's place in the unfolding evolution of life on earth.
It shows that our species is in the midst of choosing to fulfill it's potential or by default, self-destruct. It clearly shows that our choices that we are making now are decisive. It also makes clear that we already have and know everything we need to not only survive and prosper, but to facilitate the same for all of our fellow creatures and earth itself. Our time is running out and, as this book shows, the world will go on perfectly well without us. We are a new "big-brain" experiment in the dance of life...one that is blessed/cursed with having to choose our destiny.

Although out of print in its original title "Gaia...", it is now available as "Earthdance; Living Systems in Evolution."

Excellent book written in user-friendly language that shows how we can better model our social systems after natural systems; which has had billions of years to work out the kinks. Highly recommended.

An excellent book on Intermediate Spanish; the book uses both Spanish and English. In preface to the book, the authors say: "The book is divided into two major parts La gente (Unidades I-III) and Los Lugars (Unidades IV-VI). Los gente offers a variety of views of Hispanics in the context of three topics: family, public figures, and men and women. Los lugares focuses on Spain, Latin America, and the United States, as home to millions of Hispanics.

5 out of 5 stars As Great as a Book Can Be.......2004-09-15

For anyone who doesn't know, bouldering is a branch of rock climbing in which no ropes or harnesses are used. Because of this, the climber usually doesn't go more than a dozen feet up and should have pads and a spotter ready to help should he or she fall.

That being said, trying to teach someone how to become a better rock climber (or boulderer) is like trying to teach somebody to drive a manual transmission car from a book. It's no substitute for actually being out there, trying what works and what doesn't, and learning from your own mistakes.

That being said, this book gets the job done as best it can, and it even acknowledges the fact that the best skill honing and development will come not from reading, but from hands-on practicing. Author John Sherman definitely knows his stuff, and this book gives a good overview of virtually the entire bouldering world. It would have been nice to have more pictures and diagrams, just because there's so much to benefit from visual aids in this sport.

Unfortunately for anyone who is already a skilled boulderer, this book will be of little help in furthering one's craft. It primarily targets individuals who are new to the sport and rather unfamiliar or of a novice-level with the concept. But then again, anyone who is already a well-skilled boulderer should know that "How to" books are probably not the answer to fine-tuning his or her skills.

If you're someone looking to get a little more into bouldering, this book will help you take the plunge. Be sure to read the section on safety and caution first, as it can be a dangerous sport to those who are careless or reckless.

2 out of 5 stars basics, just stuff you know.......2004-07-06

this book would be great for someone who has never seen a problem in their life but i've been bouldering for about 5 months and I'm working V5 problems and this book didn't tell me anything i didn't know. I'm not saying i know everything but the information given can and should have been attained after a few months of serious climbing. Again i'm sure the author knows more than i will ever know but he didn't go past the "duh" advice in his book. Waste of money for advanced climber seeking improvement. Great for green climber looking to get started. Rock on. Nice move. Go static.

5 out of 5 stars A "painfully" objective guide to the bouldering trade.......1999-01-20

Having come from a traditional climbing background, and having discovered John Gill through Pat Ament during my peak, I evolved into a boulderer for the sake of bouldering, rather than just training for traditional climbing. Why? For me personally, bouldering was the obvious channel for a mortal being to follow while coping with the reality that I am a maturing human. Because the nectar of laying hands on Mother Earth's various forms of lithified artwork was never to evaporate, the need to ascend soaring heights of the stuff has. In short, no more Sentinel Mental Journey's. John Sherman has written an honest, humorous, and quality book that describes the nuances involved with high limit bouldering. Of particular credit is John's painfully objective efforts at describing even those controversial elements of bouldering that exist such as cheater stones, route altering and manufacturing, etc. Don't despair John, it was the right thing to do. The beauty of bouldering is in its inherent variety of ways it can be approached. John Sherman does not advocate one way or the other but does indeed get his beliefs across to the reader without appearing too evangelistic. That is noble. So whether you choose to boulder nude without shoes or chalk, or if you choose to approach bouldering with a flak jacket, John Sherman's book epitomizes its title, Better Bouldering. He should be proud of this book and you should buy it and read it if you too decide that you don't want anymore Sentinel Mental Journeys.

                            5 out of 5 stars Sherman is a God!!.......1998-12-27

Sherman the Vermin scores again with this wonderful book on the sport of bouldering. A life-long boulderer and a gifted smart-aleck, Sherman lays it out in a fun and informative style that will give you all the tricks of the trade while keeping you chuckling the whole way through.

                            5 out of 5 stars Witty and informative; A Bull's Eye.......1998-06-26

Verm (Sherman) hits the mark with this guide. Read it and you will climb (boulder) better and will not look or act like a geek. Lots of insider hints and tricks, gently sprinkled with John's particular humor. A must buy.

If you're learing Italian, even if you're not planning to go to Italy - you may benefit from watching Italian movies. You can learn slang from the movies, too, but having a book which some common expressions spelled out may help you, too. It will also help you if you're socializing with Italian crowd in your neighborhood. It will spice up your interaction and you can enjoy the pleasure of understanding what they're talking about when they use slang.

The previous reviewer pointed out that Italian language has been standardized - all that this means is that everyone is learning in school the same Italian. People from different regions at home may still use the dialect from their own region, so for example, a Calabrese will speak the standardized Italian, but he may also use Calabrese dialect.

3 out of 5 stars alright... for those who don't want TOO much accuracy..........2004-06-22

I bought this book just before I left for Italy, intending to learn some Italian slang so I wouldn't stick out too much as un americana. I'd never spoken Italian before, or studied it, so I figured, why not? I didn't touch the book until I was almost done with my three months, and when I picked it up to look at it, I was disappointed. Even though I'd only been studying Italian for a short period of time, I noticed that the translations weren't terribly accurate. They held the same general meaning, I guess, but left out a lot of the colour that the Italian version held. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the slang, unfortunately, though I can say that it may not be all it's cracked up to be. Italian as a standardized (I emphasize STANDARDIZED) language has only been around for about fifty years. Before that, people spoke i dialetti, dialects separate for each region, and a lot of slang is still only used in certain regions. But after saying that, the book is still decent for a (short) laugh and is probably useful enough if you have twenty bucks to burn in your wallet. I do recommend that you not get this if you're just starting out in Italian - save it for after you've studied for several years (or, if you're studying in Italy without speaking your native language, for several months). Comunque, in bocca a lupo a tutti chi stanno studiando la lingua bella!
