Book Description
In today’s service economy, many jobs require that applicants have a smiling face, helpful disposition and the ability to interact in a friendly manner with others. Or in the case of law enforcement or bill collecting, an employee can be required to be less friendly and more harsh in his or her interaction with customers or criminals.
Jobs that require emotional labor typically necessitate contact with other people external to or within the organization, usually involving face-to-face or voice-to-voice contact, especially in service work. Emotional labor requires employees to give something of themselves to others with whom they have no ongoing personal relationship.
Emotional Labor in the Service Economy, a special issue of
THE ANNALS, discusses the many aspects of emotional labor in a variety of job settings and cross-disciplinary examples. Articles in this important issue highlight:
· Emotional Demands at Work
· Financial Penalty for Doing Caring Work
· Psychological Consequences of Emotional Labor
· Rules Regulating Emotional Displays in Jobs or Job Requirements
Emotional labor has gained increased recognition as it grows to affect productivity and generates profit. This special issue of
THE ANNALS is a valuable resource to researchers, scholars and professionals in all areas to provide insight into this important topic.

An excellent language for describing business processes.......2003-05-16
The old saying about not being able to understand something until you can quantify it is generally true, but can be superseded by a more accurate statement. "If you can diagram it, then you can understand it, more particularly you can make someone else understand it as well." While most humans can think numerically, a large percentage have some difficulty with quantitative data. However, nearly all can follow directed diagrams, so they are generally a superior way to describe complex structures. IDEF0 is a set of rules for diagrams that are simple, yet allow for enough complexity so that the most complex of processes can be represented.
This book is an explanation of the IDEF0 syntax and structure and how to apply it to business operations. No previous experience is necessary, the diagrams are largely self-explanatory and what little extra explanation that is needed is provided. As a long-time user and instructor of the Unified Modeling Language, I am familiar with complex diagrams. Yet, I was surprised with how simple and effective the IDEF0 "language" is to use and understand. Using little more than boxes, arrows and labels, very complex structures can be described in a compressed format. The last two chapters describe how to use it and how to avoid making some common mistakes.
Business Process Reengineering is where previous business processes are modified to conform to changes in the environment. In order to be able to do that, you must be able to define what your previous business process was. The IDEF0 will allow you to do that, and I recommend that you read this book if you are currently in the process of altering your business practices.
The best-written summary of IDEF0 presently in print.......2002-03-06
This is a book that is more about IDEF0 modeling than Business Process Reengineering (BPR). It is well organized with numerous diagrams and illustrations. IDEF0 conventions, benefits, and history are all well presented, but anyone seeking a "how-to" on BPR will not find much here.
The book provides chapters on the utility of IDEF0, its use by the Department of Defense (DoD) in process improvement, as well as IDEF0 syntax and semantics, their application (called pragmatics), and tips.
The appendices may well be the most useful part of the book. Appendix A describes the types of models and decomposition strategies. The next section provides many interesting sample models. A rather academic and dry treatment of SADT and IDEF0 is in Appendix C. In Appendix D, where SADT data modeling, IDEF0 and IDEF1X are positioned, the author asserts that "some amount of process modeling should be done before data modeling." The final section provides an insightful case study.
The primary concern about the book is its light treatment of BPR concepts. Also, the points made in the "Do's and Don'ts" section might have been better presented in the related sections of the text; the separate chapter seems redundant or confusing at times, making a single topic difficult to review. A detailed treatment of how to use activity based costing in process analysis and redesign would have been most welcome. Finally, the book seems incomplete without a listing of tools that support IDEF0 modeling.
All things considered, this book is recommended with reservations. It is the best-written summary of IDEF0 presently in print.
More than practical, it's a fundamental of IDEF0.......2001-03-29
This book is more than the title said. I bought it to refresh my IDEF0 but I found many great stories behind IDEF development as well as the "growing" example while you learn. Compared to its size, you can finish this book in a day -but pack with lots of information. I found it's quite useful for brush-up my IDEF. For the new user of IDEF, it might be a little bit (just a little) to grasp the whole idea of BPR. Additional book of workflow management, BPR and system analysis are required.
Just as the title says..........2000-04-06
An excellent book that goes beyond the FIPS manual in terms of increasing the readers understanding of IDEFO concepts. More importantly, however, are the sections on the do's and dont's. These sections are very useful in improving ones authoring techniques and are very useful for a project manager. Great book.
My only guidence for doing process reengineering using IDEF0.......2000-03-30
My name is Louma I am from Jordan, my background is computer science, my comment on this book is:- Reading this book was my only guidence to do my job in process reengineering, it helped me a lot understanding the IDEF0 methodology. And I wish that this book had with it a booklet with more in depth explannation and examples for another cases may be a health service delivery, book production, security gaurding etc of general cases. I want to add that the book is writen in a very user friendly way and it is easy to be understood.
Thank you author. Keep the good work.

Book Description
It is said that business re-engineering is part of our transition to a post-industrial society. The purpose of this book is to present an approach to how to reorganize businesses using the discipline of software engineering as a guiding paradigm. The author's thesis is that software engineering provides the necessary analytical expertise for defining business processes and the tools to transform process descriptions to support systems. The author begins by introducing the concepts and needs for business reengineering and principles and practice of software engineering. He then shows how by concentrating on processes, a business can define the information base required and how it is to be constructed. As a result, any manager or technically-minded person will learn how to implement the reengineering of a business.
Customer Reviews:
This book is great for business transactions and processes........1998-03-31
The SF language section is very detailed and sometimes tedious, but this information is important because it contains all the tools needed to model and specify every aspect of business software projects. SF is useful for supplying a common group engineering langauage that can be understood without interpretation problems. Also, it proves very useful for group projects in areas such as system integration.

From the supplier: The Village of Carol Stream near downtown Chicago contracted with a private firm to make improvements in its water billing system which sometimes caused high payment-rejection rates and lock box rejection problems. The company presented an internally developed software program which uses a modem to obtain payment information from the lock box electronically. The information is then automatically transmitted to the village's billing files. A postnet bar-coded payment envelope was also provided to ease payment delivery to the lock box office, thus improving the water billing process.

Book Description
The physical and chemical environmental changes associated with global change have increasingly affected the health and productivity of forest ecosystems. Among the important environmental changes manifested by intensive land use and natural disturbances in the Northeastern and North Central United States are escalating levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, tropospheric ozone, deposition of nitrogen and sulfur compounds, acidic precipitation, and climate variability. This volume presents five years of research of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service's Northern Global Change Program. This longterm research contributes to our understanding of the effects of multiples stresses on forest ecosystems over multiple spatial and temporal scales. At the physiological level, reports explore changes in growth and biomass, species composition, and wildlife habitat; at the landscape scale, the abundance distribution, and dynamics of species, populations, and communities are addressed. Chapters include studies of nutrient depletion, climate and atmospheric deposition, carbon and nitrogen cycling, insect and disease outbreaks, biotic feedbacks with the atmosphere, interacting effects of multiple stresses, and modeling the regional effects of global change. The book provides sound ecological information for policymakers and land-use planners as well as for researchers in ecology, forestry, atmospheric science, soil science and biogeochemistry. Robert A. Mickler is Project Scientist for Scientific Assessments and Quality Assurance, Southern Global Change Program with ManTech Environmental Technology, Inc. Richard Birdsey is USDA Forest Service Program Manager for the Northern Global Change Program. John L. Hom is USDA Forest Service Assistant Program Manger for the Northern Global Change Program.

Coming to Life: How Genes Drive Development

Book Description
Understanding how a multicelluar animal develops from a single cell (the fertilized egg) poses one of the greatest challenges in biology today. Development from egg to adult involves the sequential expression of virtually the whole of an organisms genetic instructions both in the mother as she lays down developmental cues in the egg, and in the embryo itself. Most of our present information on the role of genes in development comes from the invertebrate fruit fly, Drosophila. The two authors of this text (amongst the foremost authorities in the world) follow the developmental process from fertilization through the primitive structural development of the body plan of the fly after cleavage into the differentiation of the variety of tissues, organ and body parts that together define the fly. The developmental processes are fully explained throughout the text in the modern language of molecular biology and genetics. This text represents the vital synthesis of the subject that many have been waiting for and it will enable many specific courses in developmental biology and molecular genetics to be focussed upon it appealing to 2nd and 3rd year students in these disciplines as well as in biochemistry, neurobiology and zoology. It will also have widespread appeal amongst researchers.

The Connection Between DNA and The Animal.......2006-06-20
For the uninitiated such as I, it has been entirely mysterious how a strand of DNA manages to express itself as a finished animal. Indeed, I really do believe evolution works, and that the information that describes an individual animal is passed on through the coding of DNA. But it has been uncomfortable accepting this principle on faith because authorities in the field say so. Here is a book that describes the process and explains how scientists detect and measure the mechanism. To all my fellow skeptics, I highly recommend this book.
What knock-outs can tell you.......2005-11-04
This is a wonderful summary of that which we have learned from genetic knock-out and knock-in technology. There is a systemic evaluation of even the earliest cell divisions and the results are clear: knock-out or knock-in a gene, and the patterns change. Even axial organization of the egg can be influenced by knocking out a gene.
The focus is entirely on making sense of the drosophila with knock-out and knock-in experiments . Fundamental research into initiating metabolic activity, surface chemistry and protein assembly is not addressed.
bristling with insight.......2002-02-20
What a great book! Lawrence has managed to take the long history and complex details of genetic studies on drosophila development, and synthesize it all into an accessible summary that anyone can understand. This is by far the most concise and straightforward summary of fly development, and should be considered a must-read for anyone who cares about developmental biology. OK, full-time fly people will probably find it mostly too basic, but for the rest of us it's just right. Sidebars on the different techniques provide useful details for those who care without interrupting the flow of the prose. Defiantely recommended. Plus, the cover picture is really cool.
Self-builder.......2000-11-27
The general reader interested in not only how a single fly egg cell develops into a complex, formed fly, but how genetic and molecular biological experiments are used to determine such mechanisms, will find this book useful. The maternal systems that establish positional information in the egg cell, followed by the development of parasegments, and followed by expression of groups of cells, are described. It is shown that a large amount of genetic information is required to simply organize the embryo, besides building it. Many of the genes discussed have homologues in other higher animals such as vertebrates.
Good Book for research.......2000-03-25
I read this book when I was doing a project on drosophila menogaster, and this book really helped. There were some things that were hard to understand, but for the most part it was imformative and concise.

classic big wave surfing stories.
Download Description
Few images grab our attention like a surfer hurtling down a titanic wall of water. The amazing story of big wave surfing ranks with the most exciting of adventure sports. A rich history of characters, controversies, heroism, humor and tragedy define the sport. A vein of true grit runs through the cutting-edge athletes who challenge these monster waves, and that same vein can be found in this outstanding collection of stories.
Customer Reviews:
Buy The Big Drop.......2005-04-27
The Big Drop is by John Log. This book is a wonderful surfing book full of very colorful stories told by the people that had surfed the waves, or were there at the moment if the person had died. The way the people tell the stories make it feel like you are there feeling their pain. If you do not feel like reading the book then you might just want to get the movie Riding Giants. About fifty percent of the movie Riding Giants is in the book. In the book there is a colorful picture almost every chapter of the people riding the wave. I would defiantly recommend the book to anyone, especially if you like to surf. The book also teaches you a lot about surfing vocabulary and even has a couple pages at the end that are the glossary, in case you don't know the terms of surfing. The Big Drop shows the dangers of surfing and makes you wonder why people even risk their life just for a little thrill. I would give this book 9 out of 10, because there are some stories in there that aren't very interesting compared to others in the book. There is only a couple of the stories that are not as interesting, so it does not take away from the book at all.
Props for the original extreme sport.......2004-03-18
Provides great insight on the pioneers of the sport, but doesn't come across like a history lesson. It makes you understand the ballz it takes to paddle into a wave the size of an apartment building, along with the consequences those guys have faced.
Thoroughly enjoyable for non-surfers too. My dad has never been on a board and he couldn't put the book down.
Get inside the Big Wave Surfing Culture.......2001-07-13
Not just a surfing book but focusing on the Big Wave surfing crew, that elite group of athletes that live to challenge the ocean's fury. This is a collection of short stories but it does a great job of covering the total history of Big Wave surfing, particularly paying attention to the heroes of the 50s and 60s the water skills necessary to challenge large waves. With complete coverage and analysis of all big wave sites and legends, I can't imagine what it left unturned.
This exciting sport has elevated itself recently with "ski in" surfing and these stories do a great job of covering the controversy of this sport's growth and it's trailblazer, Laird Hamilton.
I strongly recommend this book if you like surfing or are enthralled by the culture of these people who devote their lives to the ocean.
Firsthand accounts..........2001-06-30
...of Big Wave surfing - many of the stories are haunting and memorable. It was hard putting the book down once I started reading. I actually found it more interesting and insightful than watching film of surfers going over the edge - you actually get into their excitement, awe, and fear of what they've gotten themselves into - not only when they've caught the waves, but gut-wrenching accounts of what they were thinking and feeling when driven under (or saw their friends driven under) by these monsters.
This is as close as you're going to get, short of paddling out yourself! BTW, I just finished reading "Caught Inside" before "The Big Drop" and reading these stories made reading CI seem like a waste of time.
You won't regret reading this one - highly recommended!!!
This book Rips.......2000-06-21
I am a grom, at the age of 17 right now, and I rarely read a book cover to cover.I've always been interested in big wave surfing, but never the old timer stuff. This book has revealed the truth about riding big waves in and interesting perspective to the new generation such as myself, and I will never forget some of the stories in here. I reccomend that if you're a surfer, and are even remotely interested in attempting to tackle large surf, that you pick up this book. It will give you second thoughts about venturing out at places like Mavericks, Waimaii Bay, and Todos Santos.

Why We Must Run With Scissors: Voice Lessons in Persuasive W.......2002-04-23
What do overworked, frazzled English teachers need more than June, July and August? This book. Why We Must Run With Scissors is a practical, usable book filled with ideas that beg to be used by real kids in a real classroom. They were written by a real teacher who has used them, perfected them and presented them in one of the most user friendly formats I have encountered in years. While this book is touted as a writing text, it is really a literacy text because it is filled with reading, writing, connecting and extending ideas. I love this book, and I would recommend it to any teacher who wants to bring joy and laughter back to the teaching of reading and writing.-

Customer Reviews:
disappointing -- great concept, poorly realized.......2002-06-06
This book is a survey of new designers that lacks content and depth. While the designers featured may be talented, the photos often fail to convey this, because many of them don't display the designs prominently. Also, you don't get a good sense of the designers' styles based on the few examples (usually one or two per designer) shown.
In addition, I found the dimensions of this book to be quite awkward. The pages are smaller and narrower in width than I expected from a book containing fashion photographs.
I much prefer Claire Wilcox's Radical Fashion.
the future.......2000-04-08
In this second book by Stephen Gan, he is looking at the future generation of fashion designers. You won't find Karl Lagerfeld or Gianni Versace in this book but the next garde of world reknown group of designers. If you are looking for the designers of today buy Visionaire fashion's 2000.
