Your company is not a machine. It may make machines, or it may service them, but it is not, in itself, a machine. It's a living entity in an unpredictable world. This makes it nearly impossible to run a business organization effectively with a hierarchical, top-down management style. And yet, posits Chris Turner in All Hat and No Cattle, that's the way most companies try to do it. They may give lip service to other management styles, to open chains of communication and all that, but in reality these managers are "all hat and no cattle": they talk a good game, but in the end don't really have anything to back it up.

Turner is a veteran of Xerox. She was there when its corporate name was synonymous with photocopying, and when it had huge markets to itself, and she was still there when the Japanese turned the copying world upside down by being able to sell machines for less money than it took Xerox to manufacture them. So she's seen how a corporation's assumption about how the world works can get turned on its ear, and she thinks the lessons she learned at Xerox are applicable to any large company that's set in its ways. For example, she notes that very few people actually learn how to do anything by reading the instructions--only about 15 percent, according to a study she cites. Far more--61 percent--learn by trial and error, or through social interaction, or a combination of those two methods. And yet, most managers try to teach people to do things by showing them the instructions. "I wondered who learns from PowerPoint slide presentations," she writes. "The answer is nobody!" This is a book that nearly anyone who trains, teaches, or manages a staff can learn from. Some managers reading this book will see themselves reproduced in unflattering shades of black and white, but, hey, sometimes you have to look at yourself as others see you, unpleasant as that may be. --Lou Schuler

      Book Description

An irreverent and inspirational guide to overcoming corporate complacency, injecting spirit and energy, and creating real change and personal fulfillment in organizations of all shapes and sizes.

Are "knowledge-work," "empowerment strategies," and "continuous improvement" making your head spin? Have you heard "let's get everybody on the same page" just one time too many? Was the latest management training just another dose of warmed-over dogma? Then it's time to start kicking up some dust and making a difference. In All Hat and No Cattle, maverick consultant and writer, Chris Turner, serves as our guide, and with a healthy dose of Texas humor and the wisdom gained from experience on the front lines, she exposes much of what passes for management wisdom as baloney and offers alternative ways of thinking about organizations and the people who bring them to life. Not your father's management textbook, All Hat and No Cattle shows how real growth, vitality, and change result when all of us take responsibility for doing things in new ways-ways that create the future now. All Hat and No Cattle is chock full of ideas guaranteed to help frazzled folks shake up the workplace.

2 out of 5 stars Old Hat and Great Title.......2001-01-16

There is an old syllogism of organizations. 1. We must do something. 2. This is something. 3. We must do this.

Many a budding institutional innovator, frustrated by the hidebound habits of her colleagues, has nonetheless stifled her creativity for fear of losing influence, job, or respect. Then there are those like Chris Turner, who resolutely turn their horse's head and take the road less traveled. In Turner's case, that means donning the proud mantle of change agent, leading corporate learning programs at Xerox Business Services. Since leaving XBS, Turner has turned consultant and speaker, using her irreverence, Texan argot, and impatience with untested convention to inspire revolution.

Turner wants change, and she wants it now. She wants to replace institutional fear with "love-based systems." She believes in "disturbing the system," doing something - anything - differently to provoke a reaction. Most of all she castigates "all hat and no cattle," a Lone Star State expression for all style and no substance. Pay for performance, obsessions with measurement, corporate welfare, bad PowerPoint slides: "all hat and no cattle," declares Turner, and she delights in taking the high and mighty down a notch or three.

Irreverence can be entertaining, even when it fulminates on a soapbox. But like another successful Texan who partied throughout college, Turner tends to assume that the people in charge are self-interested, greedy mediocrities who can't be trusted. Appealing though they may be, generalizations cut both ways: we mustn't assume that all managers are automatically right, but nor should we assume that they're automatically wrong. Turner is mad as hell and not going to take it any more: fair enough, but by condemning any activity that perpetuates the status quo, she often veers from passion to petulance. It's imprudent for a sans-culotte to show frustration at not being queen.

If you're a stymied OD professional, you may be inflamed by this call for revolution. You'll certainly welcome Chapter 6, in which Turner offers specific, detailed suggestions for revamping organizational meetings. And you can always add to your storehouse of quotations, as Turner strews aphorisms across her pages with Barlettian generosity - Emerson, Wilde, Einstein, Didley, all are grist to her mill. But in the end All Hat and No Cattle suffers from the same syndrome it so gleefully diagnoses: too much prate, not enough practice. Change agent, heal thyself.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Provocative.......2001-01-05

After reading this book, I recommended it to several friends, who in turn told several friends, and so on. This is a powerful and insightful glimpse by a trained observer, into organizational dynamics. I've used Turner's stories and exercises, always with profound results. Her focus on the human aspect of the organization is critical for those wishing to bring change to the vapid, smokey halls of corporate America. "When the student is ready, the Master will come". Turner is Masterful.

      1 out of 5 stars A real disappointment.......2000-11-09

The book began as an interesting concept, but quickly I realized that the author was never at a job long enough to see any results. She never was in a position of importance in any of the companies, so I don't really know where she gets the idea that these programs will actually work. She has views about almost every company and suggestions, but so far I've not been able to find anything that would lead me to believe that what she says had any validity. Save your money and buy another book.

      1 out of 5 stars Blowhard's Blather.......2000-07-27

"All Hat and No Cattle" purports to be an insider's account of, amongst other things, the lessons learned from being part of a bloated bureaucracy run amok. The title comes from the Texas term for "all talk without any substance." Indeed the foreword by Alan Webber extols the virtues of the author's genuine honesty. He even says that she "writes with a Texas twang!"

Trouble is, if that's the only real thing here, it's not enough to make up for the sloppy thinking and other defects that make this book such a waste of money. (Wish I could get a refund on grounds that the book had nothing of any value to say!)

My ex-husband and I both attended the Xerox Business Services (XBS) "Camp Lur-ning" organized by the author a number of years ago. She contends that the positive effects to the company are still felt to this day. Oh yeah? If true, why'd she bail like so many of us did? Tom Peters obviously failed to consider this when he cited Chris Turner as an example of passion and caring transforming large organizations into creative enterprises.

The book really has only about enough substance for a small pamphlet but embellishes to the point that the final pages degenerate into an incoherent diatribe, nah--it's just mush--of how all the ills of society are the result of white males running the show. Readers are encouraged to do everything from writing their elected officials to voting for Ralph Nader!

Not realizing that she had nothing much to say in the first place, the author tells readers that this is a story without end so she gives, in the book's final pages, a URL where readers are told not to be strangers (the contraction "Y'hear?" seemed missin' y'all!). Even here, most of what is posted reflects the ignorance keeping the author from assessing reality in a way that would have let her draw conclusions that made sense or, even better, would have been of some use.

The problem with Xerox in general, and XBS in particular, is the drag on operations by the bloated levels of bosses. Coupled with the incompetence of the over paid executives and it's no wonder the stock has tanked!

The biggest falsehood Chris Turner spreads is the myth that XBS was the only financial money maker within the corporation. Any XBS "profits" over the years were at the expense of the rest of the enterprise, mostly getting credit for the profitable part of the sale of equipment "bought" from manufacturing (at cost) along with the "services" (mostly slave labor) provided for running the same equipment. The dime-a-dozen vice presidents belched forth by XBS then actually believe their own propaganda--that they know what they're doing--and executives in the rest of the company follow their flawed example!

Chris Turner's a nice person but her book is no better than the phonies she used to work for. Too bad! Don't waste your time or money on this terrible, incoherently rambling, shoddily thrown together, replete with misprints, work which, with even a little bit of thought, could have risen to the level of fluff or, perhaps even, all hat and no cattle?

The single star given was generous. (Star of Texas?)

3 out of 5 stars send for the posse.......2000-03-12

Chris Turner is a maverick turned loose onto Big Business, in this case Xerox. She questioned and made changes to the top-down autocratic management approach in order to stimulate interest and growth in Xerox. All Hat and No Cattle is a phrase she uses to describe managers who have no idea of what is really going on in their department/company. She inspired people to stir things up and try new ideas and concepts to get people/employees fired up setting up "camps" where people met/networked in a free-spirit open method. Once they understood what was the goal, which was growth and saving money, they were off and running on their own. She introduced new ways of doing things to stimulate them and it worked. They became very enthusiastic and zealous in their endeavors to make this work. Many managers use key words such as "empowerment, innovation and learning" without anything to back it up, no substance. All meetings are the same with power-point slide presentations and the same topics rehashed and never resolved. No one learns from these types of meetings she determined. She states that we "resist idiocies that will disappear shortly to be replaced by the latest flavor of the month. People resist inane organizational programs because people are smart." Chris Turner uses humor to describe corporate complacency and has you acknowledging you've experienced managers/leaders that she describes. As a nurse manager myself, she has us understand that with true employee involvement and giving them appropriate tools to work with they can surprise you with their adaptability, innovation and enthusiasm. Out of this involvement change can come, change for the better- bottom line cost savings, increased profit and increased employee morale. All of this really shakes up the bosses, who feel threatened by this increased employee involvement.

Among the Dockum fossil beds of West Texas in 1983, paleontologist Sankar Chatterjee made a momentous discovery: the fossilized remains of a curious creature subsequently dubbed Protoavis, or primordial bird. In The Rise of Birds, Chatterjee writes that Protoavis predates Archaeopteryx, previously known as the "first bird" by some 75 million years, and that it is more closely related to the modern bird than its Johnny-come-lately rival. But Protoavis is only the starting point for this sweeping, detailed, and beautifully illustrated history of bird evolution. Chatterjee examines the many recent discoveries of bird fossils all over the world and comes to some fascinating and often surprising conclusions: the evolutionary link between birds and dinosaurs, for instance, or their near-extinction (along with the dinosaurs) when large meteors fell to earth almost 65 million years ago. From the distinguishing characteristics of avian anatomy to theories about the first avian flight, Chatterjee's book is a thoughtful and accessible look at one of the most flourishing products of evolution.

          Book Description

"I'm sure that May 21, 1986, will remain among the most memorable days of my career. On my way to Albuquerque, New Mexico, I had stopped in Lubbock, Texas, to study the Triassic archosaurs collected by Sankar Chatterjee from the Dockum beds of west Texas. I expected to see fossils of the large-headed carnivore Postosuchus, the armored herbivore Desmatosuchus, and the crocodile-like parasuchians. I wasn't expecting to see what I saw..." -- Lawrence M. Witmer, from the foreword

Dinosaurs are so popular that we often neglect their flying relatives that are still among us. Birds, the true "living dinosaurs," deserve considerable respect as successful vertebrates that have evolved, adapted, and survived over a period of 225 million years. The Rise of Birds is the first detailed, illustrated, and comprehensive review of the fossil record of birds in a modern phylogenetic context. Distinguished paleontologist Sankar Chatterjee provides a clear and exciting chronology documenting the long odyssey of birds since Protoavis -- which may have taken to the air some 75 million years before the widely known "first bird," Archaeopterix.

Throughout The Rise of Birds, Chatterjee offers a wealth of fascinating details from the colorful history of birds past and present. Among them: • Some intelligent theropods such as dromaeosaurs were arboreal and could climb trees with their swivel wrist joint and stiff tail. They were capable of parachuting and gliding from tree to ground.

          • The discovery of downy theropod dinosaurs from China indicates that upper jaw mobility, not feathers, is the most distinctive characteristic of birds.

          • Most birds were wiped out 65 million years ago, along with the dinosaurs, by large meteoritic impacts. However, few lineages of birds rebounded from this catastrophe and underwent an explosive evolution.

The Rise of Birds discusses the significance of all the many recently discovered bird and possible bird fossils, from Europe to China to Latin America. Chatterjee outlines the varying theories of how animal flight developed, and he explains, in terms of comparative anatomy, what makes a bird a bird. The book covers some of the greatest events in avian development: their emergence in the Triassic pangean world, their flight refinement and global diversification during the continental breakup of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, their sudden decline at the end-Cretaceous extinction, their rebound and explosive radiation dur-ing the Cenozoic era, and finally their destiny with us.

Beautifully illustrated by Michael W. Nickell, this book will be of interest to a broad range of readers, including vertebrate paleontologists, ornithologists, and amateur naturalists, including birders.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars A succinct introduction to Chatterjee's work.......2004-12-01

The Rise of Birds is a lavishly illustrated and stylistically impressive book which admirably summarizes Sankar Chatterjee's work since the discovery of Protoavis in the late 1980s. If you are looking for a comprehensive analysis of the potential avian status of Protoavis texensis, I suggest Chatterjee's actual journal papers (esp. Chatterjee 1991) as this book presents only a diluted version of the arguments in question. While this is suitable for an introductory level readership, those already familiar with the issues discussed in this book will be discouraged by the generality of it.

This aside, it is still an excellent overview of several of the major topics of contention in our understanding of bird origins and the evolution of bird flight. Though dated at this point, for those who are looking for an accessible, well-illustrated and well-written introduction to the field of avian paleontology and evolution, this volume is a good choice for their shelf (among others).

5 out of 5 stars The Rise of Birds: 225 Million Years of Evolution.......2004-07-10

The Rise of Birds: 225 Million years of Evolution written by Sankar Chatterjee and illustrated by Michael W. Nickell is an excellent book about the rise of birds and has some very interesting comparative anatomy as Chatterjee compares the Protoavis "first bird" found by Chatterjee in Texas in 1983, with other fossil remains and comes to his own conclusions as to how flight began for birds.

As we read on in the book, we find that the fossilzed evidence of the Mesozoic birds is still quite sketchy and there exist some remarkable holes to be filled in from the fossil record. This book is becoming a little dated as there has been some new evidence in the fossil record coming out of China that has been remarkable and isn't covered in the book as the publishing date preceeds that finding of this new fossil evidence.

Protoavis has been looked upon by scientists in the past and conclusions to where it fit in in the fossil record are just now coming to light and makes for interesting reading. Scientists have been ignoring Protoavis until Chatterjee and his published analysis giving Protoavis a closer look.

Dinosaurs are so popular and we have a tendency to often over look or neglect their bird relatives... this link is becoming stronger and stronger as more fossil finds are linking the dinosaurs to birds... making birds the true living dinosaurs that demand respect.

"The Rise of Birds: 225 Million Years of Evolution" is a very well illustrated text making for easy comparative anatomic analysis. The detail is comprehensive and we read about a modern phylogenetic context. Also, throughout the text Chatterjee fascinates the reader with a wealth of details from the colorful history of birds from past to present.

Chatterjee goes into detail about how flight emerged, whether from the ground up or from the trees to the ground as a gliding type of flight. This argument is detailed with the dromaeosaurs, as an intelligent theopod, was an arboreal tree climber with swivel wrist joints and a stiff tail.

The reader needs a little science background to get the maximum effect from the book, but it is wriiten in a way that a broad range of people can get some benefit reading this book, from vertebrate paleontologist, ornithologists, and amateur naturalists such as birders. This book would qualify as a book on Paleobiology, but very readable with ample detail in explaining the finer points.

"The Rise of Birds: 225 Million Years of Evolution" will captivate you and you will learn some of the finer points in flight and evolution, as the book covers fossil evidence from Europe to China and Latin America making this book a very comprehensive starting source... albeit a dated source. As this book covers some of the greatest events in avian development we see that birds are linked to their Triassic cousins, their flight refinement and global diversification. I gave this book a solid five stars for a intelligent and captivating and educational read. There was a logic to the presentation in this book making the reader feel comfortable as you read on and learn.

2 out of 5 stars Revolution or scaremonger?.......2002-06-20

Dino-aves theory has not been the total consensus yet. Under the situation, Prof.Chatterjee audaciously published an shocking book. It should have been, however, to be honest, disappointing. If his Protoavis & his interpretation is real, it should be earthshattering event. More advanced bird than Archaeopteryx already existed in Triassic! Which means more primitive one (ancestral form) should be looked for in rocks of maybe Permian or even could be of Carboniferous! Powered flight occurred in such an early stage! Palaeozoic & Mesozoic vertebrate story would be obliged to revised completely.
For such a rebellious topic, the content is not sufficiently convincing. The problem is the remainder of Protoavis is quite fragmental. Photos & much more detailed explanation of the interpretation of each referred bones are definitely needed for the restoration drawing. That's the main feature of this book! Otherwise readers might be confused.
Also lack the scenario, although it might be impossible to present fossil evidence, before & after Protoavis. Even speculative.
Meticulaous is the skull of Iberomesornis whose skull has not yet discovered. Nevertheless, no caution on the drawing.
As a whole, indigestion. This book tells a little.
If one likes to know or study anatomical features of birds & dinosaurs, I'd recommend to look for a book or text of bird anatomy on one hand, and Predatory Dinosaurs of the World (by Gregory Paul) on the other.

5 out of 5 stars fairly technical but interesting book on fossil birds.......2001-03-01

Chatterjee does a great job in presenting his case for Protoavis, a bird that may very well precede the famous Archaeopteryx of the Jurassic. Though a bit technical at times, it has a good overview of bird evolution and of fossil birds throughout the Mesozoic and throughout the Cenozoic, with excellent coverage of many Tertiary species, especially at Green River(from the Eocene of Wyoming) and Messel (from the Eocene of Central Europe). Their relationship to dinosaurs is well covered, and some time is spent on the K/T event that ended much Mesozoic life. Numerous diagrams and illustrations and a thorough bibliography. While not all may agree with his take on Protoavis, this remains a worthwhile on avian evolution and fossil bird speciesA good book.

          5 out of 5 stars A excellent, complete and up-to-date review.......1999-03-17

Although this book is much about the finding of Protoavis, it is also much more than that. The Jurassic, Cretaceous and Tertiary birds are all treated, a superb argument for the evolution of flight from tree-dwelling dromaeosaurs is made, an important contribution to the understanding of the End-Cretaceous extinction is presented and the too-often neglected subject of heterochrony is discussed, too. The figures are excellent and very useful to help understand the text, which is sometime loaded with anatomical jargon. The book ends with a wise review of the modern extinction caused by spead of humanity to every corner of the planet.

I also think that the recent discoveries made in China can be well integrated in the frame set by Chatterjee, so the book is not out of date at all.

All in all, a formidable book for undergraduates and professionnals.

The New York-bred journalist and television commentator Shana Alexander, who has written biographies of checkered-career socialites Bess Meyerson, Jean Harris, and Patty Hearst, may seem at first blush to be an unlikely student of Loxodonta africana and Elephas maximus. Yet she has been an attentive devotee of elephants since witnessing, on Easter Sunday 1962, the birth of a 225-pound elephant at the Portland Zoo, an event she covered for Life magazine--and one that captivated countless readers.

Elephant is an unabashed celebration of these mysterious creatures, whose closest living relatives are the dugong and the hyrax. "They have," Alexander writes, "essential nobility, grace, serenity, sagacity, loyalty and playfulness, a simple goodness, a lack of animosity--unless provoked." While, she admits, elephants can pose particular dangers to unwary humans (she recounts tales of circus trainers of her acquaintance, some of whom fell in action), they are too often the victims in any interaction with people. The elephant's fortunes have long been declining: where only a few thousand years ago several species roamed the earth, by 1980 the combined wild populations in Africa and Asia numbered fewer than 100,000 individuals.

Alexander writes with a light hand about the curiosities of elephantine biology and social life, among them the phenomena of musth, where young males challenge their elders; flehmen, that curious teeth-baring smile exhibited by so many mammals in the course of mating; and the uncanny ability of elephants to communicate with each other over great distances. Citing published reports and drawing on extensive interviews with scientists and conservationists over the last four decades, she champions the elephants' cause in an admirable and engrossing book. --Gregory McNamee

          Book Description

When Shana Alexander, a staff writer at Life magazine, won the right to name her own assignments, her first choice was a week-by-week account of a zoo elephant's pregnancy, believed to be the first in the history of captive elephants. Finally, in 1962, after twenty-two months, the baby was born, and Alexander's story was proudly trumpeted on Life's cover. Ever since, between other projects, she has made writing and learning about elephants a special interest.

In The Astonishing Elephant, Shana Alexander tells a story filled with drama, humor, sorrow, greed, sex, science--and surprising human interest. Physiologically, elephants are unique--entirely different from all other mammals. Yet, since antiquity, observers have agreed that the elephant is the animal most akin to man.

Today both species of elephant--Africans and Asians--stand on the brink of extinction. Hope is arising, however, from a new generation of young American scientists, many of them women. Female zoologists and biologists have led the field in new findings about elephant ecology, family and sexual patterns, and the animals' continual communication by ultrasound, inaudible to human ears.
The Astonishing Elephant also reveals, for the first time, a hair-raising story of elephant "genocide": in the years between the Civil War and World War I, all male elephants in U.S. circuses were stealthily killed--shot, poisoned, drowned, and even hanged. The reason was musth, a periodic condition of mature males that renders them uncontrollable. So, gradually, only female elephants--now with masculine names--were put on parade, with no one the wiser.

Most important, The Astonishing Elephant details a decade of heartbreaking trial and error and eventual triumph as scientists have tried to learn how to breed elephants via artificial insemination.

Shana Alexander has traveled the world for this story. She has visited India and Africa, interviewing the brave researchers who are devoting their lives to the oversize mysteries of elephants. She has looked back in history, detailing the elephant's importance in every major religion, in work, in warfare, and in its position--now threatened--at the heart of every circus, from Rome to Ringling.
The Astonishing Elephant contains everything old and new that a reader has ever wondered about elephants, told in the stylish prose for which Shana Alexander is celebrated.

          4 out of 5 stars Overall informative.......2003-06-12

I found this book comprehensive and informative. It was also enjoyable to read.
The graphic descriptions of killings by elephants and executions of elephants could have been deleted, without compromising the book.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishingly Good Book !.......2001-02-20

Astonishingly good book by a gifted writer. Journalist Shana Alexander recounts her personal experiences with elephants beginning with 'Packy" born at Portland Zoo, and continuing into late 1990's.

She was privileged to meet and work with many well known elephant people like the Douglas-Hamiltons, Moss, Poole, Rasmussen and others and tells of these encounters while describing the work they do and some of the interesting findings they have made.

The book covers some unusual aspects of elephant lore including a history and causes of the demise of male elephants in captivity. Parts of the reporting are gruesome.

In the latter portions she devotes a great deal of material to breeding and artificial insemination efforts, giving details of procedures as she witnessed them.

While keeping her writing at a professional level she lets her love of elephants comes through. Preservation of the species is an underlying theme of this work but it is not an 'in your face' assault on the reader.

I read it slowly over a one month period and my experience was akin to having her come for a chat every other evening and spend an hour or two telling me about elephants and her experiences. A wonderful book.

4 out of 5 stars A Tough Read for Animal Lovers.......2000-12-29

The Astonishing Elephant by Shana Alexander is educational, well researched and written, and an absorbing book. If you love animals, though, it is heartbreaking to learn how cruel and unfeeling the human animal can be toward our earthmates--the animals.

The very things that elephants are admired for--their strength, intelligence, sensitivity, the female's maternal instincts and the elephants' propensity to live as families--are the very reasons the abuse of such animals (or any animal) is so horrific.

This book will increase your knowledge of the astonishing elephant, but may break your heart.

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining and informational read.......2000-08-29

Our family read this book while on vacation and all of us found it to be not only entertaining, but very educational. Too often the things that go on behind the scenes of the animal and entertainment world are unrevealed. Not only did we open our eyes to many truths, we enjoyed the tale and the journey. If you love elephants this is a must read book. Thank you Ms. Alexander for sharing your experiences and knowledge with all of us!

3 out of 5 stars Developing a Successful Football Program.......2007-07-30

Overall the book is pretty good. It has some great advice concerning practice planning and organization plus a lot of good drills. It covers all the areas I think should be covered when developing a program. However there are quite a few typographical errors and a couple of the illustrations don't match the description in the text. Naturally that can lead to some confusion. It would also be a much better book with some good photos. There aren't any photos in the book and some techniques are very difficult to understand without a visual reference.

                  4 out of 5 stars Very thorough.......2007-01-12

Everything in this book is good, solid information. I would have liked to have seen a few more, "out of the box" ideas, but for coaches or athletic directors, this book would be a useful resource.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!!.......2003-07-13

This book is possibly one of the best youth football books out there. It is geared toward youth football but at the sametime is in depth. Where as a typical youth football book is extremely vanilla and extremely basic this book has in depth X's and O's but at the sametime can still be applied at the youth level. It also has detailed explanation of how to play each positon along with drills. This is a must buy.

                  5 out of 5 stars Proven system.......2003-06-02

This book contains principals and drills that can be applied to any level program. This book was in a coaching manual form and was distributed for a Football Program in my area. The success from one year to the next was dramatic. Now that this manual has been detailed and formatted into a book with schematics it is even more comprehensive. There is something for everyone. I used the manual and now have read the book. Coaches new and old will find things that are encouraging and useful. The book is filled with passion and identifies important coaching points for each drill. I have given my old manual copy to a coach at another program and he is now buying the book. I wish this book was available when I started.

I found this edition as good as the one I have used since 1991.
The only thing that I don't like about it is that it starts off
with the Polish translations. If you're an American, it is easier
to start off with the English,(like the old edition) so that if
