Dynamics in Farming Systems: Changes in Time and Space in Sukumaland, Tanzania
H. C. C. Meertens , L. J. Ndege , and H. J. Enserink Manufacturer: Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 9068328190 |
Book Description
Although early observers found African agricultural systems traditional and conservative, in more recent years we have begun to understand their dynamic nature. Agricultural practices in Sukumaland have been recorded for over 100 years; this information can be used to test theories of agricultural development. Farming systems research has itself had some static tendencies. Here farming systems dynamics -including consideration of the land, labour, and capital intensity of a system - is advocated as giving a more adequate perspective. Labour productivity is seen as a key variable.

In Situ Hybridization in Electron Microscopy (Methods in Visualization)
Gerard Morel , Annie Cavalier , and Lynda Williams Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0849300444 |
Book Description
In situ hybridization is a technique that allows for the visualization of specific DNA and RNA sequences in individual cells, and is an especially important method for studying nucleic acids in heterogeneous cell populations. in situ Hybridization in Electron Microscopy reviews the three main methods developed for the ultrastructural visualization of genes: ° hybridization on ultrathin sections of tissue embedded in hydrophilic resin (post-embedding method) ° hybridization prior to embedding (pre-embedding) ° hybridization on ultrathin sections of frozen tissue (frozen tissue method). For each technique, the different stages are described in detail: the preparation of tissue, pretreatment, hybridization, and visualization of the hybridization products. The book combines theory and practice, starting with the basic principles, then breaking down the experimental process into successive steps illustrated by numerous diagrams, detailed protocols, and tables. This is all done in a format that uses parallel columns to convey useful comments next to the theory and practical details alongside each stage of the protocol. Additionally, the summary tables provide the criteria for choosing the probe type and technique, and a detailed index aids in the search for information. in situ Hybridization In Electron Microscopy is an essential companion for applying these methods at the electron microscopic level.

Hybridization Techniques for Electron Microscopy
Gerard Morel Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 084934414X |
Book Description
Hybridization Techniques for Electron Microscopy examines the use of in situ hybridization techniques, including an overview of current perspectives and future developments. The book features in situ methods for fluorescence probes and confocal scanning microscopes. Three in situ hybridization methods for electron microscopes are analyzed: the non-embedded tissue method using ultrathin frozen sections, pre-embedded method, and post-embedded method using material embedded in hydrophilic resin. Positive and negative features are discussed, and clear instructions regarding implementation of techniques are provided. Particular aspects of the techniques are examined in detail, such as preparation of tissue, pretreatment, hybridization procedures, revelation (autoradiography and immunocytology) and checking procedures, in addition to the illustration, interpretation, and discussion of methods and results. The main applications described include virus detection, chromosomal gene mapping, detection of ribosomic nucleic acid, and detection of messenger RNA in animals and plants. Hybridization Techniques for Electron Microscopy is an excellent reference for cytologists, cell biologists, histochemists, cytochemists, molecular endocrinologists, and neuroendocrinologists.

Biomechanical Systems: Techniques and Applications, Volume III: Musculoskeletal Models and Techniques
Cornelius Leondes Manufacturer: CRC Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0849390486 |
Book Description
Because of developments in powerful computer technology, computational techniques, advances in a wide spectrum of diverse technologies, and other advances coupled with cross disciplinary pursuits between technology and its greatly significant applied implications in human body processes, the field of biomechanics is evolving as a broadly significant area. This Third Volume presents the advances in widely diverse areas with significant implications for human betterment that occur continuously at a high rate. These include dynamics of musculo-skeletal systems; mechanics of hard and soft tissues; mechanics of muscle; mechanics of bone remodeling; mechanics of implant-tissue interfaces; cardiovascular and respiratory biomechanics; mechanics of blood flow, air flow, flow-prosthesis interfaces; mechanics of impact; dynamics of man machine interaction; and numerous other areas. The great breadth and depth of the field of biomechanics on the international scene requires at least four volumes for adequate treatment. These four volumes constitute a well integrated set that can be utilized as individual volumes. They provide a substantively significant and rather comprehensive, in-depth treatment of biomechanic systems and techniques that is most surely unique on the international scene.

What baseball fan doesn't get goosebumps when hearing, "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!" Who--hockey fan or not--doesn't feel a little bit giddy whenever they hear Al Michaels shout, "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!" Who doesn't grin when they hear Univision sportscaster Andres Cantor demonstrate his lung capacity by bellowing, "Gooooaaaal!" And who can forget "The Play" in the Cal vs. Stanford game when the Bears came back to win in the final seconds--bowling over a trombone player in the process? From an admittedly scratchy recording of Babe Ruth's memorable World Series home run in 1932 to the dramatic penalty shootout win in the 1999 Women's World Cup, And the Crowd Goes Wild captures history's greatest sports calls. The two CDs accompanying this collection feature 47 original sports calls, including Franco Harris making the "Immaculate Reception," Secretariat winning the Triple Crown, Lou Gehrig saying goodbye, Buster Douglas upsetting Mike Tyson, and Mark McGwire beating Roger Maris's single-season home run record. The book sets up each event with capsule explanations, accompanied by stock photographs. Narrated by Bob Costas, And the Crowd Goes Wild will entertain any sports fan. --Sunny Delaney

Overall, I really enjoyed these moments, especially as I am too young to remember over 3/4ths of them =), you can still get a tingle hearing the call on the Cal-Stanford game, Wilt's 100th point, etc.

Angela McRobbie Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0415057809 |
