Book Description
Higher education matters. No longer the exclusive province of a small intellectual elite, it is a key element in national economic performance. A modern economy needs a high-quality university system, and needs to make it accessible to everyone who can benefit. But mass higher education is expensive, and competes for public funds with pensions and health care, to say nothing of nursery education and schools. How to pay for higher education has thus become a central issue.
This book tells the story of the UK debate, illustrating a head-on collision between the economic imperatives of student loans and regulated market forces and the political imperative of "free" higher education. It also tells the story of the partnership of an economist and a political professional. The first part of the book contains selected writing from the late 1980s about two key elements in the puzzle: the proper design of student loans (writing which was picked up and promptly implemented in other countries), and the role of regulated market forces, an area which remains a political minefield in most countries. The book traces those twin elements through the 1990s and into the 2000s, culminating in important - and perhaps path-breaking - legislation in 2004. Both sets of policies are rooted in the economics of information, and thus have technical roots not ideological ones. The only ideological element (a major preoccupation of both authors) is to widen access to higher education.
The book offers lessons both about policy design and about the politics of reform of particular relevance to countries which have not yet addressed the issue, including many OECD countries, the more advanced post-communist reforming countries and, increasingly to middle-income developing countries. More generally, the policies are suitable for any country which has the administrative capacity to collect income tax.

10 Lessons From the Future: Tomorrow Is a Matter of Choice, Make It Yours
ASIN: 0273659480 |
Book Description
Companies don't innovate - people do!
With today's markets changing at warp-speed, no existing business believes it has a future without a strong focus on innovation. Companies with bold leadership are attempting to create a culture in which innovation can flourish. To do so, they need radical innovators and business activists.
This is what Lessons in Radical Innovation is about. There are many books on innovation, but this is the first to take the debate from the corporate level to the individual. It's about real people who took risks, who set themselves extraordinary goals against almost impossible odds.
These are stories about out-of-the-box thinking; about passionate individuals and the different kinds of companies they created.
The book provides a structured way to think about innovation and gives practical examples of how individuals are doing it. Share their ideas, attitudes and tools - real world examples of real people making a real difference - and build your own context for thriving as a business radical.

Practical And Thought-provoking.......2003-05-10
From the back jacket of the book reads " This book provides a structured way to think about innovation and gives practical examples of how individuals are doing it. "
In my opinion, this book offers more!
My first reaction to this book is a sense of excitement: the author actually sets aside generous amount of space for readers to write their thoughts. This is very thoughtful as this book bring exciting concepts that enthralls and demands a second reading. Note-taking is a must.
I am also impressed by way Chapter 1 handles "Catalysts of Change". This concept is very complex and dynamic: however, Wolfgang handles it expertly.
Chapter 9's Strategic Thinking and Strategic Action provides leaders and decision-makers the necessary tools to conceptualise their corporate strategy. I am amazed by the simplicity of presentation.
This book is a must read for all who want a grasp of developing an innovative mind...

American History Divided - Hemp.......2004-05-20
The word "hemp" should be part of the subtitle rather than the title of this book. Although Deitch follows the history of hemp from our colonization through its industrialization to its politicization, he also spends a large portion of this book discussing agriculture, economics and politics in America through this time making this book an excellent history text along the lines of Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States : 1492-Present" and Daniel Yergin's "Prize : The Epic Quest for Oil, Money & Power".
Book Description
"I recommend the book to anyone interested in the past, present, and future of life on this planet"
-Murray Gell-Mann, author of The Quark and the Jaguar
"Simon Levin, easily one of the finest and most thoughtful contemporary ecologists, has written a fine and thoughtful book. Throughout, Levin portrays the broad history of the field he has participated in so well, and characterizes a range of specific and general models and alternative theories to account for many of the broad features seen. Written with charm, grace, and intelligence, this book richly deserves a wide audience."

Customer Reviews:
Intelligent, But NOT Alarmist In The Least! Should Be Required Reading Before Graduating College!.......2005-11-21
This book is written by a world renown, Princeton University biologist. I found it to be very thorough and quite inspiring. One of my favorite passages: "Thus, biodiversity is distributed, like stars and gasses and dust in the sky, into nebulae and galaxies of determinate and indeterminate structure, producing a picture whose intricacies defy simple discription." Well said! Biodiversity is truly a treasure beyond measure!
Unfortunately for us, kooky consevatives, and their ilk, are attacking science on many fronts, trying, and many times succeeding, in blocking scientific progress. What a shame! Now it's biology that's "alamist." While the globe is warming, glaciers are melting to such a degree, that it's benefiting archeology; human caused extinctions of flora and fauna are reaching epochal proportions; huge area of oceans, lakes, and bays, have dead zones due to the lack of oxygenation; our environmental laws, here in the States, such as the Endangered Species Act, are under constant attack by Neanderthals in Congress; ad nauseum, the rest of us should just bury our collective heads in the proverbial sand! But when an emminet biologist tells the truth about where our planet's precious biodiversity is heading, he's "alamist."
This one of the most apolitical books I've ever read! But I'm certainly glad the author didn't have his book vetted by conservative lunatics, or their corporate and government allies!
intelligent but alarmist.......2002-07-19
Levin has produced a rich, nuanced and detailed account of how complexity theory may further our understanding of ecological processes. He does not shy away from the tough questions: How do ecosystems assemble themselves? What is the relationship between an ecosystem's structure and function? Does evolution increase the resiliency of an ecosystem? In addressing these and other questions, Levin offers both real world examples and sophisticated theory. Regrettably, Levin often fails to distinguish between what he knows as a scientist and what he has decided to take on faith based on the statements of environmentalist advocacy groups. As a result, the book is a strange amalgam of excellent "popular" science and overearnest environmental alarmism.
Broaching an important topic.......2000-03-08
Fragile Dominion addresses an important topic, biodiversity. It discusses the use and development of models, particularly a certain type of mathematical model, for better understanding the biosphere. The emphasis on the effects of environmental degradation on the human condition and the call to "think locally" are vital if real progress is to be made in bettering the "commons."
Levin rationally discusses the Gaia hypothesis and touches upon subjects such as fitness landscapes in population genetics, evolutionary stable strategies, the evolution of altruism, disturbance and recolonization in forest and tidal systems, self-organizing criticality, and the important notion that pattern and process are not necessarily the same everywhere.
Throughout the book, Levin effectively uses economic examples, such as diversity in a stock portfolio, as parallels for ecological systems.
One drawback is that the book's level of mathematical and ecological sophistication is perhaps aimed a bit too high for the popular audience for which it is intended. Conversely, it is pitched too low for use in a scholarly setting.
It should be noted that the mathematical aesthetic for this work comes from only one school of thought, that of the Santa Fe Institute.
A delightful read for the scientist and non-scientist alike........1999-07-25
I have known Levin just short of 30 years. He has been my mentor, my friend, my protector, and my pride. The eloquent prose and playful humor within his novel echoes the past 4 decades of Levin's teachings. It is a biographical chronicle of a lifetime of colleagues and their works, an adoration of classical music, and a relentless passion for mental conundrums and for quizzing for sport.
Levin's tireless devotion to accrue knowledge and to interact with each of his colleagues and students at universities and workshops around the globe has armed him with the intuit and insight which he imparts in Fragile Dominion. Levin is known for humbling his opponent on the squash court, for his command of biology and mathematics, and for his hilarious antics and quick wit. This revered scientist will now be known for synthesizing the field of ecology in a powerful, succinct novel. A delightful read for the scientist and nonscientist alike, Fragile Dominion, like the life about which it provides commentary, is worth the ride.
This book won't be read by everone, BUT IT SHOULD BE!!!.......1999-06-22
I, not being educated in ecology and environmental sciences, still found this book to be timely, informational and educational. The author presents his and other authoritys' complex environmental theories and ideas with brilliant, entertaining and even funny analogies which I as a naive observer could understand. From his "Ecological Scrabble", falling cows (cows were not designed to fly, of course), fast food establishments as an example of functional meta-groups, his own office desk as "self-organized system", to the common message "think globally, act locally"--- (Levin encourages us to think LOCALLY as well, to be responsible), the author concludes with a valid to-do list of action items (eight "commandments" which I found to be applicable to another environment which is currently thriving- the INERNET...)If we don't take appropriate action to protect the diversity of our environment, we could end up like the starfish, if the mussels were to takeover the rocks,, how does one eat baked starfish? Parmagiana or Marsala?

In this meaty paperback, published to mark the tenth anniversary of Ayrton Senna's death, Christopher Hilton marries and updates four of his earlier titles about the legendary driver into one volume of more than 100,000 words. He chronicles Senna¦s entire story, from the wealthy childhood in Brazil to his fatal crash in 1994. It is a fast-moving and comprehensive account of an extraordinary life that will appeal to the wider public as well as to Senna fans.
Customer Reviews:
Great Insight.......2007-07-18
Very detailed. Better if more pictures were added.
Truly explains how unique Senna was mainly as a driver and in all that he does. Without a doubt, he was the greatest.
Very informing for Senna fans.......2007-01-09
I don't want to write a long review since I don't think of myself as a qualified book reviewer.
I was and am a true Ayrton Senna fan so the book was almost mandatory for me to own, it gave me good insight into what he was like and what modivated him through his short but very successful life.
I recommend this book to anyone who truly is an F1 and Ayrton Senna da Silva fan and has some questions about his career as a driver.
Unbiased and thorough.......2006-05-23
Very thorough recount of Sennas life by someone who followed his carreer closely.
Each of the events are well written and exceprts of interviews from all the sides are included. Very unbiased !
It took me a few days to read, I enjoyed and my heart leaped with excietement remebering each season, each headline, etc.
A fantastic recollection of the Incident in Suzuka, and of "the lap" at Donnington.
But as soon as I arrived to Saturday Apr 30th 1994 my eyes were filled with tears and had to put the book back.
Book Description
How can the Japanese for Busy People series help you learn Japanese?
Japanese for Busy People is, as the title suggests, a concise course for 'busy' students who want to learn natural, spoken Japanese as effectively as possible in a limited amount of time. Three main texts - Japanese for Busy People I, Japanese for Busy People II, and Japanese for Busy People Ill -
with related workbooks, cassette tapes, ODs, teacher's manuals, and videos make up this fully integrated three-level series. At each level, enough vocabulary and grammar has been provided to enable the learner to communicate in uncomplicated adult language without having to memorize excessive
amounts of vocabulary and language patterns that are not immediately useful. All components of the Japanese for Busy People series have been prepared under the guidance of a working group of experienced Japanese language instructors who reviewed and tested the material in an authentic classroom
environment.
Japanese for Busy People II: The Workbook is the ideal resource for any student who wishes to improve speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in Japanese. This collection of exercises and activities has been developed to provide practice for sentence patterns presented in both the Revised
Edition and Kana Version of Japanese for Busy People Il. The workbook can be used both in the classroom as a supplement for introducing or reviewing lessons, and outside the classroom for homework and review. When coordinated with the exercises and quizzes in the main textbook, this workbook should
enable learners to improve their command of basic Japanese in a relatively short time.'
Customer Reviews:
Very useful........2007-05-25
A great supplement to the Japanese for Busy People II -- good practice for self-motivated learners of Japanese. Each lesson (there's 20) is composed of three sections, Warming Up (preparation practice), Sentence Pattern and Practice (key learning objectives with plenty of practice in sentence patterns), and Challenge (a level above to give learners a chance to test their skills). There's fill-in charts and lots of cartoons. Note that Kanji with Furigana pronunciation guides have been provided only in some sections in Lessons 11-20. There's no additional vocabulary other than what's already provided with the main text --- a positive point, in my opinion. All lessons run parallel to the main text. I bought this workbook because I don't get much practice to speak Japanese. I've found that the sentence patterns from the workbook are less complicated than those from the text and repeating them has really helped to "cement" what I'd learned. There's audio tapes sold separately, but you need them only if you prefer extra listening practice.
Good Complement to the Workbook.......2005-08-24
To pronounce Japanese well, it is important to repeatedly hear a native speaker. These tapes re-enforce the workbook lessons.
JFBP is a great series that really benefits from the multiple components. e.g.
1 The book
2 The CDs for the book
3 The workbook
4 The tapes for the workbook
5 The video
Each component re-enforces the other.
While I really like this series, you will need to find a way to deal with two short comings.
1) They never tell you the rules for verb conjugation. They only tell you to memorize. You will need another resource for this.
2) There is a lot of vocabulary, but no drilling method provided. You will need to do some flashcard drilling to really remember these. Don't forget to review old lessons.
All and all a great series. However, Pimsleur is still my favorite. Pimsleur is only audio, so is quite limited compared to JFBP, but their educational method is superb.
Good luck with your studies.
Excellent Text Book.......2005-01-13
Our class used this text and it's companion workbook for college level Japanese I & II classes. It's a wonderful text book and very effective when used within the context of an organized language class.
I struggled with self-study for a long time, but with the help of this textbook, I had learned to read/write Hirigana, conjugate common verbs & adverbs, use basic particles properly, comprehend the spoken langage more effectively and communicate in simple, grammatically decent, sentences.
This set of books is not intended for self-study. I strongly urge individuals interested in the Japanese language for both travel, business and recreational purposes take classes for the following reasons:
1) Discipline - assignments and repetition are necessary to learning a foreign language effectively.
2) Accuracy - this book 'hammers the grammar'. If your English grammer skills are lax, you're going to need professional instruction.
3) Pronunciation - CD language programs are fine for travel, but nothing beats a real-life instructor a linguistic reality check!
4) Commaraderie - Classmates are crucial in foreign language study. Who else will tolerate your learning curve?
5) MOST IMPORTANT - the language skills you'll learn in a real class with a wonderful book such as this will help you to speak and comprehend the language at a much higher level.
Great!.......2004-05-21
I started using JFBP level 2 after finishing the first book. I think this work book is better than the level 1 workbook. Instead of 2 or 3 longer exercises per chapter, this book has several smaller ones. I also like how this book tail makes the exercises to the grammar points discussed in the corresponding text book chapters. The best of which makes you construct sentences by filling in your own words around given structures Example: ______ is ______er than _______. (Bill is taller than Joe) This sounds silly... but its a great way to become familiar with new grammar structures.
As others have said, this book is useless on its own. You need the text book!
An excellent supplement.......2002-06-11
This is a very good book. It provides more comprehensive practice of the language taught in Japanese for busy people II. The characters are quite amusing in places - a welcome change from the dry. corporate, lifeless stories in the sister book. This book isn`t enough on its own, as it doesn`t actually explain the grammar, it only provides tasks. However, for me some of the sentence patterns were much clearer after using this book than reading them in the sister book. I think it`s an essential purchase for self-study students.
