    5 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on enterprise Knowledge Management.......2000-06-02

    I've always had much respect for Tom Koulopoulos and the Delphi Group. But I expected going into this book that there would be a sales pitch embedded into the book of some sort. Not so.

    The book is a very readable, very practical guide to enabling your organization to develop instict. What does "instinct" mean in the context of a business you ask? It means that when the market shifts, your company is structured in such a way that it can shift immediately to accomodate and exploit it. Rather than observing market changes and reacting to them retrospectively, you are there from the beginning.

    To accomplish this, companies must balance their characteristics according to a grid of:

    * INTERNAL AWARENESS

    * EXTERNAL AWARENESS

    * INTERNAL RESPONSIVENESS

    * EXTERNAL RESPONSIVENESS

    The book is all about the specifics of this grid and how you can acheive balance. At the end of the book is a very helpful Corporate Instinct Assessment test for use on your company.

    For those who desire to put feet on KM theory, I recommend, as a start, reading "Corporate Instinct" and "The Character of a Corporation" (Goffee and Jones) together. The latter fills in many of the Cultural elements not treated in the former.

      Book Description

      As exciting as the new field of genomics is, it has not yet produced a basic conceptual change in biology. The fundamental problems remain: the origin of life, cell organization, the pathways of differentiation, aging, and the molecular and cellular capabilities of the brain. What has occurred is an explosion of molecular information obtained by genomic sequences, which will soon be followed by exhaustive catalogs of protein interactions and protein function. This wealth of information can be analyzed and manipulated only with the help of computers. The rapidly expanding role of computers in biology may usher in a profound conceptual change in how we study living systems in the laboratory.

      This book focuses on current computational approaches to understanding the complex networks of metabolic and gene regulatory capabilities of the cell. The contributors look well beyond the state of the art in computational biology to anticipate what biological research will be like in a post-genomic world.

      4 out of 5 stars Good overview and literature survey of modern developments.......2006-12-10

      The determination of the genome of organisms is quite an achievement, and one that is taking place with incredible rapidity at the present time. But in order to completely understand the life processes of an organism one needs to understand how the genes are expressed and the consequent effects on the metabolism. As is pointed out in this book, even for the bacterial organism Escherichia coli, whose genome is the most understood in the biosphere, only about six hundred promoters have been determined experimentally. If genome determination is to have practical applications to human and animal health, it will become necessary to have a much better understanding of how the metabolism of an organism is regulated by its genes. This is an enormously difficult undertaking due to the magnitude of the information involved. It is therefore no surprise that computing machines and algorithms have been used to sort through and organize this information. Whether it goes by the name of computational biology or computational genomics, the use of these machines has assisted greatly in the understanding of the life processes. This book outlines a few of the approaches that have been taken. It is directed towards experts, but it could be read by anyone who has an interest in genetic and metabolic engineering from an information-theoretic, computational perspective. The book was first published four years ago, and so it is somewhat out of date, due to the increases in CPU processing speeds and new algorithms that have been developed since then.

      Of particular interest is the article by Collado-Vides et al and which concerns the use of software to translate a DNA sequence into all possible proteins so as to compare them against a database of proteins that were determined by experiment. The authors discuss how this can be done for the case of E. coli and for a database called RegulonDB, which can be accessed on the Web, and which contains information on transcription initiation and operon organization in the K-12 strain of E. coli. The goal of the authors is to understand the structure of gene regulatory networks, both from a purely computational point of view and using experimentally determined transcription profiles. The article is broken down into four parts, with the first one concentrating on the prediction of gene regulatory networks using sequence information, followed by one discussing the use of Bayesian networks to assist in these predictions. The third part gives examples on how to use the database information to analyze transcription experiments and the last puts all of this analysis in the context of evolutionary origins of transcriptional regulation.

      The authors are very interested in the process of transcription, particularly the initiation phase. As is well known, gene transcription is catalyzed by the RNA polymerase (RNAP) proteins. In particular, the RNAP `holoenzyme' contains the `sigma factor' that guides RNAP to specific sequences on the genomic DNA (the promoter). The RNAP holoenzyme with the sigma factor thus recognizes the precise site where transcription is initiated. Having located a promoter and binding to it, the RNAP holoenzyme and the bound DNA then undergo a series of conformational changes that allow RNA synthesis to be initiated. For the case of E. coli, the study of the formation of RNAP contacts at these specific sites on the promoter DNA has been the subject of intense experimental investigation, the challenge being the measurement of the formation of these contacts in real time. In this context the author's goal is find computational schemes that will predict the promoters and other protein-binding sites. This has traditionally been done with the use of weight matrices, but as the authors point out this method (and others) results in a large number of false positives. To improve on this method, they first obtain a population of potential candidates using a low enough threshold that weaker sites can be identified. The next step is to select a collection of promoters by comparing them with all candidates within the regulatory region. The candidates are split into groups separated by the distance to the beginning of the gene, and each group contributes one best candidate. This method, the authors claim, leads to one true promoter out of six candidates on the average.

      The authors though do not end the analysis here, as they believe that the prediction of promoters is not reliable enough to search for sites for operator sites for specific transcriptional regulators (the information content of the promoter sites is too low). They therefore make use of a `dyad-detector' algorithm that has the ability to identify oligonucleotides up to seven bases long that are overrepresented in a given family of upstream regions. The dyad-detector can also find words with internal symmetry, such as palindromes. Also of interest to the authors is the identification of transcriptional activators and repressors that affect transcription initiation. Their goal is to identify which protein binds to which set of sites, assuming that a collection of protein-binding motifs has been identified and that the number in this collection is equal to the number of transcriptional regulators.

      An important subject in an easy to read book that combines art and learning. Good book. Who said learning can't be fun?

      1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2007-05-25

      If you are looking for a book that will be truly informative on wetlands, this is not it. To start with the positive, we have purchased books by this author/illustrator in the past, and have been happy with them - America's Prairies and Grasslands, for example. However, these books seem to be laid out in the same way - by geographic area. That is not necessarily a bad idea; with grasslands, the different types are largely dispersed geographically. But not so much with wetlands. There are marshes all over the U.S.! This kind of book would be much more usable if arranged by type of wetland.

      Furthermore, some types of major wetlands are omitted entirely - salt marshes, for example. If you want to know what grows/lives there, you won't find it in this book.

      Lastly, a big problem I have with this book is that areas that are not wetlands at all, such as pond or lakes, are heavily included. The author states that she has included them because "many wetland species live alongside or nearby these areas," but they were simply out of place and could be confusing to a child learning about wetlands.

      Better choices are Wetlands by Darlene Stille, unfortunately textbookish, but does have some good general information, and Leapfrogging Through Wetlands by Nancy Field (Our daughter really liked this one; I thought it was okay, and it did have an interesting format).

      5 out of 5 stars Lively, fun, interesting.......2005-04-29

      For a youngster this is the perfect introduction to an ecosystem found almost everywhere in the country. (Actually, I'm no youngster and I found the level was just right for me too.)

      The illustrations are a delight--and accurate; the text quirky with sound science and bits of fun entertaining trivia.

      If you're one of the few who doesn't have a wetland nearby, then you'll find some other books in this series that might cover your area (Prairies, Mountains, Deserts too)

      This is the 3rd book in the "Audubon Society Nature Guides" series that I've purchased, and they continue to be a pleasure to read and use. For anyone who lives near, will be travelling to, or has a general interest in Wetlands, this book is an essential. Not only is it beautifully illustrated and easy to use, but it's also a great general guide to Wetlands in the US. I am in the Chicagoland region, and almost all of the book applies to our area. Highly reccomeded for anyone from the novice to Wetland professional.

      A lot of great information and facts about the history of soccer and the developing tactics that makes soccer what it is today. Only downside for me that the author talked more about individualls and less about systems than I had hoped. BUT, it was still a very good read.

      5 out of 5 stars Andy Gray knows his football.......2005-05-10

      I love the commentary team of Andy Gray and Martin Tyler. Their comments are always interesting and spot on.
      I'm not really a big fans of English football in general, I prefer continental style myself. but the book is interesting nevertheless. Gray writing is very concise and clear, very easy to follow. He also have many interesting side stories to accompany the technical stuff. Overall very good read.

        I teach developmental writing at a local community college. My department decided on this book long before I started teaching there. I've found the grammar section of this book useless. anytime I have ever assigned a chapter for my students to read from it, they all complained in unison that it was "boring, too broad, and way too confusing." There is not a single note in the entire text about how to combine sentences using subordination, coodination, or relative pronouns, much less how to punctuate them.

        With the writing section, there is one decent chapter on how to write a thesis statement. The chapters on the individual rhetorical patterns, on the other hand, present students with two student models and a professional essay, but no explanation or exercises on how to actually write an illustrative or descriptive or definition essay. As a result, I am a slave to the copy machine. Since I am required to make my students buy this useless book, I photocopy material for students to use to initially help them learn the material. I then use the material from Langan's as additional practice, just so students don't feel like they wasted valuable money.

        Even the companion website is a pain. I thought of using the companion website for my students, but I found it particularly confusing to get around. In addition, it is next to impossible for me me to assign anything from the website because nothing can be printed, emailed, or pasted.

        5 out of 5 stars good .......2005-09-08

        i think this book is really good if you struggle with english. It has really helped me already.

        4 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner's textbook........1999-11-03

        I use this text for my remedial college freshman English course to help them brush up on grammar, punctuation, and writing forms before moving on to freshman English. My students have always liked it, and so have I.

        The readings within it are short, simple, and easy for anyone of any skill to read. They all evoke some sort of response out of my class and have even converted some "non-readers" into new devotees.

        This text might also be useful for high school English courses. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because some of the grammar/punctuation sections don't have quite enough exercises in them to help some lower-level students get a firm grasp on the ideas. However, any teacher well-armed with worksheets can remedy that problem immediately!

          Book Description

          In Couture Culture, Nancy Troy offers a new model of how art and fashion were linked in the early twentieth century. Focusing on a leader of the French fashion industry, Paul Poiret, Troy uncovers a logic of fashion based on the tension between originality and reproduction that bears directly on art historical issues of the period. This tension lies at the heart of haute couture, which, although designed for the wealthy, was also intended to be adapted for sale in department stores and other clothing outlets that catered to a broader consumer market. Troy examines the relationships between elite and popular culture, the professional theater and the fashion show, as well as the presumed polarity between Orientalist and classical sensibilities. She shows how Poiret and other designers patronized the arts and presented themselves as artists not only to sell their individual dresses to wealthy clients but also to promote the mass production of their designs. The contradictions she uncovers suggest surprising parallels with the readymades and fashion-related work of Marcel Duchamp, who explored the questions of originality and authenticity raised by couture culture during the 1910s and 1920s.

          In contrast to dominant accounts of early twentieth-century art that have dismissed fashion as superficial, fleeting, and feminized, Troy's more nuanced approach reveals conceptual structures and marketing strategies shared by modern art and fashion in these years.
