Excellent primer on enterprise Knowledge Management.......2000-06-02
The book is a very readable, very practical guide to enabling your organization to develop instict. What does "instinct" mean in the context of a business you ask? It means that when the market shifts, your company is structured in such a way that it can shift immediately to accomodate and exploit it. Rather than observing market changes and reacting to them retrospectively, you are there from the beginning.
To accomplish this, companies must balance their characteristics according to a grid of:
* INTERNAL AWARENESS
* EXTERNAL AWARENESS
* INTERNAL RESPONSIVENESS
* EXTERNAL RESPONSIVENESS
The book is all about the specifics of this grid and how you can acheive balance. At the end of the book is a very helpful Corporate Instinct Assessment test for use on your company.
For those who desire to put feet on KM theory, I recommend, as a start, reading "Corporate Instinct" and "The Character of a Corporation" (Goffee and Jones) together. The latter fills in many of the Cultural elements not treated in the former.

Gene Regulation and Metabolism: Post-Genomic Computational Approaches (Computational Molecular Biology)
Manufacturer: The MIT Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:

Book Description
As exciting as the new field of genomics is, it has not yet produced a basic conceptual change in biology. The fundamental problems remain: the origin of life, cell organization, the pathways of differentiation, aging, and the molecular and cellular capabilities of the brain. What has occurred is an explosion of molecular information obtained by genomic sequences, which will soon be followed by exhaustive catalogs of protein interactions and protein function. This wealth of information can be analyzed and manipulated only with the help of computers. The rapidly expanding role of computers in biology may usher in a profound conceptual change in how we study living systems in the laboratory.Customer Reviews:

World's Worst Textbook.......2006-07-17
supperb.......2006-02-22
good .......2005-09-08
Excellent beginner's textbook........1999-11-03
The readings within it are short, simple, and easy for anyone of any skill to read. They all evoke some sort of response out of my class and have even converted some "non-readers" into new devotees.
This text might also be useful for high school English courses. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because some of the grammar/punctuation sections don't have quite enough exercises in them to help some lower-level students get a firm grasp on the ideas. However, any teacher well-armed with worksheets can remedy that problem immediately!

Couture Culture: A Study in Modern Art and Fashion
Nancy J. Troy Manufacturer: The MIT Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0262201402 |
Book Description
In Couture Culture, Nancy Troy offers a new model of how art and fashion were linked in the early twentieth century. Focusing on a leader of the French fashion industry, Paul Poiret, Troy uncovers a logic of fashion based on the tension between originality and reproduction that bears directly on art historical issues of the period. This tension lies at the heart of haute couture, which, although designed for the wealthy, was also intended to be adapted for sale in department stores and other clothing outlets that catered to a broader consumer market. Troy examines the relationships between elite and popular culture, the professional theater and the fashion show, as well as the presumed polarity between Orientalist and classical sensibilities. She shows how Poiret and other designers patronized the arts and presented themselves as artists not only to sell their individual dresses to wealthy clients but also to promote the mass production of their designs. The contradictions she uncovers suggest surprising parallels with the readymades and fashion-related work of Marcel Duchamp, who explored the questions of originality and authenticity raised by couture culture during the 1910s and 1920s.
