      Book Description

Questions relating to the existence and nature of firms have become major issues in economics in recent years. The agenda in this area has been largely set by transaction cost economics. This approach has provided a basis for explaining the boundaries and structure of the firm in a variety of contexts. Neil Kay follows the agenda set by transaction cost economics, but he is unique in providing improved explanations of individual phenomena as well as a more general framework for analysing the nature and behaviour of firms. He illustrates his argument with sixty figures which present the relations between firms in a graphic form. The book develops a resource-based perspective of the firm. This in turn provides the foundations for the analysis of the firm as a complex system, in which links composed of shared resources constitute basic building blocks. The evolution of th efirm from simple beginnings to complex system is then studied in a number of areas, including vertical integration, diversification, multi-national enterprise, joint venture, alliance, network, and internal organization. Neil Kay's analysis advances current theories of the firm and will be essential reading for academics and researchers involved in business economics, strategic management, and organization theory.

            Book Description

Soils: Their Properties and Management 3e is a practically oriented soil science text, designed to give a sound understanding of soils for those studying or working in environmental management, land conservation and soil management. The authors have put soils and soil conservation into the
context of land management at its broadest level, providing a practical description of soils and their properties. The book examines the different kinds of degradation to which soils are susceptible, and describes the available methods of soil management and conservation. Throughout, the book has a
strong practical emphasis based on the long experience of the authors contributing to each section.

Since the publication of the second edition of this book in 2000, land management in Australia has undergone significant change. New issues and concerns have emerged, both in response to and as a result of the development of new methodologies for land management. The text explores the relevance of
soils to matters of water quality, catchment management and the ecological sustainability of land use practices reflecting the recent changes in natural resource management in Australia.

                            Book Description

Why do organisms become extremely abundant one year and then seem to disappear a few years later? Why do population outbreaks in particular species happen more or less regularly in certain locations, but only irregularly (or never at all) in other locations? Complex population dynamics have fascinated biologists for decades. By bringing together mathematical models, statistical analyses, and field experiments, this book offers a comprehensive new synthesis of the theory of population oscillations.

Peter Turchin first reviews the conceptual tools that ecologists use to investigate population oscillations, introducing population modeling and the statistical analysis of time series data. He then provides an in-depth discussion of several case studies--including the larch budmoth, southern pine beetle, red grouse, voles and lemmings, snowshoe hare, and ungulates--to develop a new analysis of the mechanisms that drive population oscillations in nature. Through such work, the author argues, ecologists can develop general laws of population dynamics that will help turn ecology into a truly quantitative and predictive science.

Complex Population Dynamics integrates theoretical and empirical studies into a major new synthesis of current knowledge about population dynamics. It is also a pioneering work that sets the course for ecology's future as a predictive science.

3 out of 5 stars From Malthus to morass.......2006-10-11

The purpose of Turchin's tome is to answer the question "Does Population Ecology Have "Laws"? (the subject of an earlier paper by him). Turchin wants to claim that population ecology is a "mature science", and uses some largely philosophical arguments to claim similarities to Newton's laws. I was not convinced.

Whilst I think he does an admirable job of explaining the current state of thinking in the field of population ecology, I believe he fails to adequately explain the first principles, leaping from the semi-firm footing of Malthusian population theory to a morass of bits of models that only partially work.

Turchin refers to the exponential law of population ecology (Malthus, 1798) as a "good candidate" for "the first principle of population dynamics". The Malthusian argument is that populations grow exponentially (at a constant rate) when "unchecked" (as Malthus would say) or as long as the "environment... remains constant" (as Turchin puts it).

Of course, this never happens, and there is no evidence presented (by any author) of any population ever having sustained indefinite exponential growth (at a constant rate). All real-world examples of exponential growth turn out to be temporary periods of exponential growth (at a constant rate).

Various other models are considered, but each with caveats and drawbacks. In short, there is - apparently - no simple law of population ecology.

                            ==Re-interpreting Malthus==

Yet Malthus argued that (human) populations double every 25 years (when unchecked), and then explained very carefully that all human populations are checked (by war, famine, pestilence, Death, or "moral restraint")! He even explicitly states that the 25 year doubling period is the "general case" and so the doubling period would sometimes be faster, sometimes slower.

A handy way of explaining the impact of what Malthus said is to use a simple heuristic tool called the Rule of 70, whereby the annual compound interest rate is divided into 70 to get the doubling period (it becomes less accurate for larger interest rates). Thus, 1% annual growth results in doubling every 70 years, and 2% annual growth results in doubling every 35 years. Check the US Census Bureau's website, and you will see that our global population doubled from 3 billion in 1960 to 6 billion in 1999 - a doubling period of 39 years. The compound interest rates during that period were almost entirely in the 1% to 2% range. Thus, it is no surprise that the population doubled somewhere between 35 and 70 years. Try it for yourself, using any rate between 1% and 2% each year until the population doubles.

Thus, variable rate compound interest results in variable doubling periods. An almost identical argument can be made for variable negative compound interest rates of growth, resulting variable population halving times.

Imagine a balancing scale, with all the negative rates on one side, and all the positives on the other. Whenever one side "outweighs" the other by 70, you've got yourself a population doubling or a population halving (depending whether positive rates or negative rate "won", respectively).

The balancing "Scales of 70" is a simple and useful approximation, and a completely accurate model called the "Scales of e" (using Natural Logarithms) is also available.

                            ==Simple Population Dynamics==

This "revised" Malthusian model - barely 1 page long - provides an explanation of a true law of population ecology that anyone can understand. This is a firmer "first principle" than the traditional interpretation of Malthus used by Turchin (and everyone else).

This is basically how all populations of all species grow. Variable rate compound interest. Just 4 words.

5 out of 5 stars Essential work for professional.......2004-03-18

Politicians often say things like, "Let's not follow each other off a cliff like lemmings," but it's not true that lemmings really follow each other off a cliff in nature. What IS true is that some species of lemmings have huge populations some years, and become almost extinct in other years.

Why does the population of lemmings vary so much? It turns out that it has to do with the interaction of the lemmings with their food supply and their predators. When there are a lot of lemmings, then they eat all the edible vegetation and begin starving, and their predators, like weasels, thrive and kill the lemmings off, so that lemmings almost disappear. With no lemmings around, the food can grow again unmolested, and predators, having nothing to eat, die off themselves. That leaves the field clear for lemmings to thrive, and their populations grow, repeating the cycle every three to five years.

Peter Turchin formalizes all this for a wide variety of animal species -- from the Larch budmouth to the southern pine beetle, from the red grouse to the snowshoe hare. He develops mathematical models for the populations of all these species and tests the models with known data time series.

This landmark book is a must for serious professionals involved in ecology and other biological and natural sciences.

5 out of 5 stars gorgeous artwork of modern and Ice Age animals.......2001-03-08

Dutch illustrator Rien Poortvliet has done an outstanding job with this work, depicting in a series of illustrations the modern and Ice Age wildlife of the Netherlands. Beginning in the present with deer and rabbits seen from his treestand, he goes further and further back in time, showing more and more exotic wildlife. Soon he shows pheasants, partrides, foxes, deer, and wild boars, as well as bringing us to early modern and medieval Holland. Eventually the work progresses all the way back to the Pleistocene, with wonderful illustrations of early man and such long vanished animals as Irish elk, woolly rhinos, and his crowning acheivement, the woolly mammoth.

Though the modern animals are well depicted, the main reason to buy this lavishly illustrated book are for its Ice Age fauna. In addition to extinct mammals, animals no longer found wild in the Netherlands such as wolves, horses, lions, bears, and elk are well covered as well.

This book is again extremely beautiful; many of the paintings have a very haunting quality. The way he takes you back in time really shows a unity of theme and makes the Ice Age fauna that much more real, showing they were as natural a part of the landscape as trees or rabbits, and look all the more real for being depicted in landscape still around today.

The book is not only on wildlife and landscape, as he shows a great deal of the life of peasants, farmers, fishermen, hunters, and eventually primitive early Man in Holland. He shows the building of ancient burial mounds, the dolmens. Poortvliet takes you on an Ice Age hunt for reindeer, then back to the village to show how the skins were prepared for clothing. He richly depicts a medieval hunt, complete with peasant drivers pressed into service, magnificent hounds, and the deadly last stand of the wild boar that was often the subject of the great hunt. A good number of pages are depicted to the interaction of wolves and humans in the Netherlands, showing wolf attacks and the campaign to wipe them out in response.

Sorry if I ramble in this review but there is just so much to take in with this magnificent work, it is like a concentrated blast of Dutch natural and human history, rich with wonderfully depicted landscapes, wildlife, human interest, and magnificent Ice Age fauna. Truly a rare book. A great book to get lost in, a great coffee table book, just a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into the natural history of early Europe.......1997-07-08

Rien Poortvliet's Journey Into the Ice Age offers an excellent and illustrative insight into the natural history of Europe. He begins the story from his modern-day perch built into a tree for the purposes of viewing wildlife in their most relaxed state, and continues as a virtual daydream which illustrates to the reader with both personal reflection and visual images how the wildlife of earlier days may have appeared had he been in the same perch hundreds or thousands of years ago. His illustrations are very detailed and anatomically perfect, and his handwritten notes add a very personal touch to this aesthetically as well as literally pleasing work of art. I enjoy reading the book to my children and leave it on the coffee table for guests to thumb through as well. I will definitely seek other titles from this author

5 out of 5 stars Great Historical Book.......2007-02-22

I've been looking for this book for a while and finally found it. It was recommended by Ajarn Chai Sirisute who I had the honor to meet in 2006 along with Guro Dan Inosanto. It's a great book for historical facts and there are techniques (basics/intermediate) that anyoned can learn. I believe this book would be a great addition to anyone's library of the arts. It is a great book with great historical pictures and is an easy read. Plus a bonus poster in the pocket in the back on Wai Khru Ram Muay. . .awesome.

                            Much respect.

4 out of 5 stars Muay Thai basics.......2007-01-12

A very good, high quality book about some of the basic techniques in the muay thai arsenal. 4 or 5 weapons of fist, elbow, leg and knee are adressed and explained. Beginners in the sport of muay thai or thai boxing should seriously consider aquiering this book, as it will definitely help their progress. Extras are a bit of the history of the sport, hand wrapping, traditional wear and combination techniques. Each technique is clearly explained with full color photographs. So you apply what you read.

                            5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-11-10

Great book. It exposes readers to the traditions and important customs when practicing Muay Thai, and includes great training information and techniques.

This is a beautiful book; i.e. glossy pages with great pictures. However, Techniques instructions are too basic without depth or details. I guess it a good book for your coffee table or if you're new to Muay Thai. But if you are serious about learning Muay Thai, get "Muay Thai: The Most Distinguished Art of Fighting".

Easy to Read, Easy to Follow

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Business Presentations.......2001-01-06

While not in sales-ever, I have made more than 10,000 business presentations to groups outside the organization. The group size ranged from a few to many people. I have attended even more presentations than I have given. Overall, this is the best book on business presentations that I have read thus far and it is likely to be one of the best books on the subject when I have read even more books on the subject. Treatment of team presentations and video conferencing was very good. The discussion of hand outs to the audience is excellent. The review of all types of visual aids is very good. The author does a superb job reviewing the use of slides that is so overdone. Admonishment to keep jargon to a minimum is very correct.

Using stories and anecdotes is handled comprehensively. Humor is hard to use in a business environment. When you are sure it is going to work it is very effective, it is risky as the author discusses. The work on delivery techniques and gestures is good. The brief discussion on stage fright is O.K. The idea of ending stage fright forever is unrealistic. Always be aiming for the that big opportunity that will bring the butterflies right back. The tools to beat nerves need to be in constant development. No author has done a great job on the subject. The most important technique is to become a leading expert on your subject and yet this is rarely mentioned.

This book has substance, is nicely organized and well written. The author exudes credibility with humility. Compared to the more than two dozen books on speaking read in recent months, this is one of the best. The areas that I wish I would have gotten help on earlier are using emotional appeals and personal stories for a highly sophisticated audience.
