Book Description

This timely and controversial book presents powerful theoretical and empirical arguments for the repeal of the anti-discrimination laws within the workplace. Richard Epstein demonstrates that these laws set one group against another, impose limits on freedom of choice, unleash bureaucratic excesses, mandate inefficient employment practices, and cause far more invidious discrimination than they prevent. Epstein urges a return to the now-rejected common law principles of individual autonomy that permit all persons to improve their position through trade, contract, and bargain, free of government constraint.

4 out of 5 stars Interested but unpersuaded........2001-03-08

Mr. Epstein makes several fantastic points in this analysis of the efficiency and usefulness of civil rights laws. Specifically, his historical account of the misinterpretation of Title VII and his differentiation between racist hiring practices versus mandatory quota systems were solid points. However, I disagreed with him due to his relative indifference to the poor income distribution which could be caused by overt, legal discrimination. The "contract at will" approach that he espouses does not adequately address these issues, and I think historically we have seen that in situations where one race, sex etc is blatantly discriminated against, they do not fare quite as equally as Epstein predicts.

While I disagree with the final premise, I am not saying that this is not an important book to read. Epstein is, as always, a fantastic writer and strong persuader. Worst comes to worst you will have a great time arguing with the pages.

3 out of 5 stars Privatizing Discrimination.......2000-12-13

Richard Epstein has a gift for making the outrageous seem plausible. In this book, he argues that the law should permit private corporations to fire people because they're black or refuse to serve them because they're Jewish. To be fair, he has no objection to "quotas" or "reverse discrimination" either, as long as these are instruments of private actors. In short, Epstein would repeal the Civil Rights Act, at least as it applies to the private sector.

If you accept the libertarian premises that state redistribution is theft and that private contracting should always be respected, Epstein's arguments do follow. I would say that that just shows how flawed libertarianism is. Society has an undoubted interest in combating private discrimination and the resulting inequalities.

Still, whatever you think of his conclusions, Epstein contributes to clarifying the debate.

4 out of 5 stars Vintage Epstein.......1999-12-05

Epstein, as usual, offers a cogent and persuasive argument for libertarian principles. His theory of "rational discrimination," lucidly explained in this book, has provoked responses--and at least some changes--in the writings of more mainstream commentators on the subject such as Posner and Donohue. Like many scholars, Epstein is just a bit too sold on his own philosophy; at times he seems genuinely unable to believe anyone would disagree with him. Despite this minor flaw, the book is great, it offers a well-written presentation of an unorthodox, yet rather convincing philosophy.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......1999-05-06

Epstein offers a rigorous and persuasive case. Prepare to have your closed mind pried open.

1 out of 5 stars Very bias, and quite blaming of others.......1999-01-19

I felt the text was quite simply written with a viewpoin that while semi-legitimate, was very one sided. I recieved the impression that it was my fault for the problems facing the subject.

          Book Description

The term "artificial life" describes research into synthetic systems that possess some of the essential properties of life. This truly interdisciplinary field includes biologists, computer scientists, physicists, chemists, geneticists, and others. Artificial life may be viewed as an attempt to understand high-level behavior from low-level rules--for example, how the simple interactions between ants and their environment lead to complex trail-following behavior. An understanding of such relationships in particular systems can suggest novel solutions to complex real-world problems such as disease prevention, stock-market prediction, and data mining on the Internet.

Since their inception in 1987, the Artificial Life meetings have grown from small workshops to truly international conferences, reflecting the field's increasing appeal to researchers in all areas of science.

5 out of 5 stars Best photography of rattlesnakes yet........1999-01-10

If you don't read a single word in this book it's worth the price for the photos alone. The section on all the various rattlesnake species in the back of the book is also outstanding and only adds to the overall excellence of this publication. Well done Mr. Mattison.

5 out of 5 stars Great for complete species reference........1998-11-22

Mattison does a great job of providing an overview of the natural history of the rattlesnake genera. Besides natural history information, the book has photos and descriptions of ALL KNOWN species (and most sub-species). I grab this book off my shelf first when looking up details on a particular rattlesnake species. Most field guides contain only the "major" rattlesnake species. This book is a great quick reference on all species. It is very well organized.

3 out of 5 stars If you like rattlesnakes..........1998-03-03

you will probably like this book! The emphasis is on the scientific side of the snakes; I would have liked to have had more information about Mattison's =adventures= in getting the information and particularly getting the superb photographs that decorate the book.

            Book Description

One of the most popular Thoroughbreds in recent times, Seattle Slew is the only undefeated Triple Crown winner, sweeping racing's three jewels while keeping his perfect record intact. Born of humble origins and homely looks, the nearly black colt overcame modest credentials to conquer all before him. The bargain-priced Seattle Slew and his youthful, attractive owners captured public imagination during racing's golden decade of the 1970s. Seattle Slew touched a chord that resonated over three seasons. In Seattle Slew, author Dan Mearns, a longtime racing journalist and editor, explores the life of the great horse, who is one of only eleven Triple Crown winners (horses who have won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes at the age of three) in the history of horse racing.

3 out of 5 stars How the ugly foal called 'Baby Huey' won the Triple Crown.......2001-04-01

Dan Mearns, who as served as managing editor of both "The Blood Horse" and the "Thoroughbred Record" has written a very workman-like account of the life Seattle Slew, the dark brown racing Hall-of-Famer, who is also an extraordinary sire-of-sires, a remarkable broodmare sire, and our last living Triple Crown champion. Last year (2000) Slew underwent surgery to fuse two vertebrae in his neck and alleviate pressure on his spinal cord. The feisty twenty-seven year-old is back in the breeding shed this year and his first mares have been pronounced in foal, so maybe we'll be privileged to watch many more champions by this extraordinary Thoroughbred.

Dan Mearns's book is number five in the "Thoroughbred Legends" series and he covers Seattle Slew from his birth (an ugly foal with big floppy brown ears), through his racing and breeding career, up into the year 2000. For those of us who admire racing's only undefeated Triple Crown Winner (Slew did lose a few after the Triple Crown races), this book is a satisfying read. There are also sixteen pages of black-and-white photographs of Slew from his ugly-duckling birth through a picture where we can see a few gray whiskers dotting his muzzle.

May the Slew live a thousand years through his offspring!

I loved this book and I feel that every one should read it. It gives you the thrill of thoroughbred racing and you feel like you're really getting to know Slew.

                        Book Description

Spanning the centuries, from the seventeenth to the twentieth, and ranging across cultures, from England to Mexico, this collection gathers together important statements on the function and feasibility of literary translation. The essays provide an overview of the historical evolution in thinking about translation and offer strong individual opinions by prominent contemporary theorists.

Most of the twenty-one pieces appear in translation, some here in English for the first time and many difficult to find elsewhere. Selections include writings by Scheiermacher, Nietzsche, Ortega, Benjamin, Pound, Jakobson, Paz, Riffaterre, Derrida, and others.

A fine companion to The Craft of Translation, this volume will be a valuable resource for all those who translate, those who teach translation theory and practice, and those interested in questions of language philosophy and literary theory.

I found this text thourough, quotable, rich and exciting. I find it appealing not only because of the famous names talking about translation: Bejamin, Paz, Derrida, Goethe, etc... but also because it covers different historical views on translating - from the 1600 up to date. A great companion to another great translation anothology: "The Translation Studies Reader".
