Book Description
At the heart of evolution lies a bewildering paradox. Natural selection favors above all the individual that leaves the most offspring—a superorganism of sorts that Jonathan Silvertown here calls the "Darwinian demon." But if such a demon existed, this highly successful organism would populate the entire world with its own kind, beating out other species and eventually extinguishing biodiversity as we know it. Why then, if evolution favors this demon, is the world filled with so many different life forms? What keeps this Darwinian demon in check? If humankind is now the greatest threat to biodiversity on the planet, have we become the Darwinian demon?
Demons in Eden considers these questions using the latest scientific discoveries from the plant world. Readers join Silvertown as he explores the astonishing diversity of plant life in regions as spectacular as the verdant climes of Japan, the lush grounds of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, the shallow wetlands and teeming freshwaters of Florida, the tropical rainforests of southeast Mexico, and the Canary Islands archipelago, whose evolutionary novelties—and exotic plant life—have earned it the sobriquet "the Galapagos of botany." Along the way, Silvertown looks closely at the evolution of plant diversity in these locales and explains why such variety persists in light of ecological patterns and evolutionary processes. In novel and useful ways, he also investigates the current state of plant diversity on the planet to show the ever-challenging threats posed by invasive species and humans.
Bringing the secret life of plants into more colorful and vivid focus than ever before, Demons in Eden is an empathic and impassioned exploration of modern plant ecology that unlocks evolutionary mysteries of the natural world.
Customer Reviews:
Why is there so much biological diversity and why are we losing biodiversity?.......2006-07-06
Every species, at least early in its life, must spread. In most cases this spread involves competition with other already existing species. Why hasn't this competition led to just a few successful species? Why do we have hundreds of thousands of species?
Silvertown has a talent for clear explanation and decades of accumulated knowledge to enthusiastically share. His sense of awe is conveyed, especially during the global field experiences on which you are taken. Sit back and enjoy; this book must be read. Botanists, plant ecologists, and students of biodiversity will appreciate this book because of the examples drawn from around the globe, tidbits of wisdom interspersed throughout, clear/logical thinking, and the enjoyable infusion of history. I especially enjoyed the logic and clarity of Silvertown's discussion of genetically modified crops.
Figures and maps are entirely lacking from the text. I felt a strong need for a few figures and maps to be interspersed with the text. Chapter three's discussion of phylogeny of Canary Island species would have been easier to follow with a simple map of the islands and a stick figure cladogram. The chapter became tedious without these. The author made up for the lack of figures with very clear explanation, but we all know that a picture is worth so many words. There are color photos grouped together at the center of the book, but these don't seem to convey the images that were needed, certainly not where they are needed. A half dozen black and white figures (including maps) interspersed throughout the book would have been better, and perhaps cheaper, than the group of color photos.
The author's skill at explaining ideas and years of experience in plant evolutionary biology are evident, and so I highly recommend this book.
Biodiversity Unmasked.......2006-05-30
Demons in Eden is an immensely enjoyable introduction to the world of plant biodiversity. Throughout his book Jonathan Silvertown demonstrates not only his passion for the subject, but also his ability to share his wealth of knowledge in such a way that anyone new to the subject will immediately feel at ease.
Peppered with atmospheric narration, accessible science and field studies in several countries worldwide, Demons in Eden is an eye-opening journey that graphically illustrates the essential role that evolution has played, and continues to play, in maintaining the balance of nature. Conversely, the author also gently reminds us - with his references to `Darwinian Demons' - of the potential danger of interfering with the status quo.
I can think of no other book that approaches this topic with such lucidity and appeal. But don't just take my word for it...on the back cover of the book I noticed glowing reviews from best-selling author, Oliver Sacks, and Peter Crane, director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, as well as several other luminaries in this field.

Book Description
More comprehensive than a field guide yet more accessible than an academic text, this authoritative reference answers fundamental questions about mammals and birds in the African bush such as How does an elephant's trunk work? Is the cheetah really the fastest animal? and Why do some bird species sit on animals? Photographs, charts, and tables accompany the question-and-answer format, making this all-in-one guide user-friendly for both wildlife enthusiasts and professionals.
Customer Reviews:
A must for the bush.......2007-01-10
If you have any interest in seeing the African wildlife and are planning a trip to the bush. This easily accessible, entertaining and fast read is a must have. Based on questions from tourists culled from years of game drives, the information enhances your knowledge of what you get to witness first hand and enriches your experience. Even if you don't head to the bush, you'll feel like you did. Plus you'll get to learn fun tidbits like a group of zebra is a "dazzle" of zebra, and when you see them, it all makes sense.
Book Description
In 13-degree sub-zero weather, on New Year's Eve, 1967, the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers toughed it out in a classic NFL championship. Sportswriter Ed Gruver weaves the fascinating details of this legendary game into a quick-paced, suspense-filled narrative that plunges readers amidst one of the fiercest football rivalries of all time. The Ice Bowl details the history of two famous coaches-Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry-and the coaching philosophies that made them and their teams legends. Gruver successfully evokes many individual players' stories of endurance, drive, and strategy. Ample background, personal interviews, action photos, and an undeniable passion for the game all contribute to this compelling account of the long-time rivalry that culminated on the "frozen tundra" of the Ice Bowl. Includes diagrams, game and season statistics, and complete Ice Bowl play-by-play.
Customer Reviews:
Good story but characters are deified.......2006-08-09
If I am not mistaken, the playoff game between the Bengals and the Chargers was played in even colder conditions than the Ice Bowl. But that game was a blowout and neither team ever won a Superbowl.
That said, the book seemed like a reasonably researched story of this game. The game coverage seems fairly good.
But the incessant praise for anybody who had anything to do with this ballgame, from writers, TV directors (the CBS director could not hold NBC's Harry Coyle's headset), players, coaches, all got irritating quite quickly.
Yes, the people are given the once-over, but their stories sound like they came right out of a press guide. Many interesting people were involved in that game, Gruver made them all sound alike.
If Gruver says that the game was such a landmark, he did little to say why. A good foreward and epilogue is needed desparately. Gruver makes no reference to this being the next-to-last-game of the Packer dynasty. The team collapsed the following year, the result of Lombardi's retirement from coaching and him not developing younger players.
Nor did the Cowboys return to the NFC championship until 3 years later.
The book could have been so much better.
Ice Bowl: I Was There.......2005-05-31
My uncle took me to the Dec 31,1967 NFL Championship game between the Cowboys and Packers, better known as the ice bowl. I was a high school senior. I have always remembered that it was -13 degrees with a 20 mph wind blowing into the open north end of the stadium. It wasn't until I read this book that I realized the wind chill by the end of the game was -56 degrees. Now I live in Texas where 100 degree summer days are the norm. On hot days I reread the book and watch the video. The Texas heat doesn't seem so bad.
The Real Deal.......2002-02-07
The year 1997 marked the thirtieth anniversary of the 1967 NFL Championship game between the Packers and the Cowboys. Two book were published around that time. One was by Mike Shropshire and the other was by Ed Gruver. Of the two books, Gruver's is superior. It looks briefly at the coaches, the organizations, the seasons, and then devotes the lion's share of the book to the actual game. Especially helpful were the diagrams of key plays that occurred during the game. The book devotes a chapter to each quarter. In addition to the players and coaches, the author looks at the game from sportscasters and referees. The author also covers issues that Shropshire ignored. For example: was Jerry Kramer offsides on the winning TD and did Donny Anderson score on the previous play. The author also does a good job on covering the discussion of possible plays that could be called on the final play. The Shropshire book was not bad, but this one wins hands down.
EXCELLENT RECAP.......2001-04-01
THIS BOOK IS TRULY A GREAT READ. THE INTERVIEWS, PHOTOGRAPHS, AND RESEARCH IS REALLY EXCELLENT. THIS IS BOOK REALLY BRINGS BACK SOME MEMORIES. I WAS ACTUALLY COLD JUST THINKING ABOUT THE HARSH CONDITIONS OF THAT DAY OF SURVIVAL. WELL DESCRIBED AND A GREAT WAY TO LEARN ABOUT THIS LEGENDARY GAME. HATS OFF TO MR GRUVER, AND ALL ASSOCIATED WITH THIS MASTERPIECE.
The Essence of Football.......2000-01-16
A wonderful book. Ed Gruver recaps this game with thirty years of perspective, and he does it right. It's well written, with comprehensive background information and game detail. The appendix has all the pertinent statistics you could want, including a play-by-play compilation.
Gruver is not biased toward the Packers. He pays richly deserved respect to the Cowboy players and coaches. The Cowboys were a "warm weather" team that might have been expected to fold their tent when faced with the severe cold, but, like the Packers, they gave everything they had on that day.
I don't see much to criticize in this book. Maybe Phil Bengtson's family would like to have seen his name spelled correctly. I'd prefer to see more discussion of the historical significance of the game, but Gruver probably thinks of himself as a reporter and not as a historian.
Not being bound by such modesty, I'll do it for him.
The greatest games in modern NFL history are:
(5) 1998 Bronco-Packer Super Bowl. (4) 1982 49er-Cowboy NFC Title Game. (3) 1969 Jet-Colt Super Bowl. (2) 1958 Giant-Colt NFL Title Game. (1) The Ice Bowl.
An epic game should have three qualities: it should effectively decide a championship, it should be historically significant (usually by signifying a changing of the guard or a change in the way the game is played), and the game action should be unforgettable. The Ice Bowl combines these qualities better than any other game.
It marked an end to the dominance of the "old" NFL and provided a glimpse of the complex offensive and defensive schemes to come. It matched two of the five greatest coaches in NFL history. No game was more dramatic; the cold weather and frozen field gave it a sense of primeval struggle. I feel that the title "Greatest Game Ever" as applied to the '58 Championship Game has been inflated by the well-known power of eastern media. The Ice Bowl deserves that title.

Customer Reviews:
A dictionary worth reading. Truly a unique resource........2006-04-15
To read Websters is to fall asleep. To read Miles Westley's dictionary is to be engaged and fascinated. This is a remarkable compilation. Consider the pages turned by the author to arrive at such a dictionary. A real treat to read or simply peruse.
A book of words and phrases which gather unusual phrases organized into specific categories such as myths and household objects.......2006-04-04
Miles Westley's Bibliophile's Dictionary is another winner for aspiring writers; this offering a book of words and phrases which gather unusual phrases organized into specific categories such as myths and household objects. If you're seeking an atypical collection of words to amaze and puzzle - and to sprinkle liberally into tired writing to give it some spice - Bibliophile's Dictionary is for you, encouraging both browsing and reference.
Thank you Miles for this high brow entertainment! Hilarious!.......2006-03-22
I flip to a random page each night, absorb a few words that I never knew existed, and then attempt to casually incorporate them into my conversations with good friends the following day.
Viola - the reaction written across people's faces is worth every penny and then some. The furrowed eye brough, the wrinkled nose, the subtle tilt of the head, the raised chin, the sudden and incontrollable itch on the forehead, the fluttering of the eyelids, the deer in the headlights, that look of utter amazement and on and on.
I can't wait to try this out when the Hare Krishna's knock on my door.
An essential tool for any writer, wannabee writer, or logophile who wants to show off at cocktail parties.......2006-03-06
I was lost in a thicket of verbiage, stumbling over vines of adverbs and lacerated by stinging nouns, trying to hack my way toward precisely the right word while writing something unspeakably boring. Then I found Miles Westley's "The Bibliophiles Dictionary" and I was saved.
But let us get something straight, right at the outset. This is not your average dictionary. It's not really even a reference work. It is a book built for browsing, for opening at random and sampling whatever happens to fall before your eyes. (It is, in that sense, excellent bathroom reading, but I digress.)
Like any good book about words the Bibliophile's Dictionary is idiosyncratic and weird, organized roughly into categories but adamantly analphabetic. In what other book can you find "Ursuline" (an order of nuns established in 1572 and devoted to the education of girls) in close proximity to "Knights of Columbus," or "Propinquity" (proximity) found so propinquitously near "Ultramontane" (of or relating to the Alps). There's no making sense of it, you just have to go with the flow.
Now, I do have some caveats. Chapter 5, for example, "The Lowly and Corrupt," features subsections named "Lustful," "Cowards and Moral Weaklings," "Drunk and Gorged," and "Lazy Slobs." This pretty much covers everyone I know, and I refuse to allow my friends to be denigrated in such callous fashion.
Still, I would say that the BD is easily the second best book I have read in the past 12 months. I am, of course, too modest to name the best book, given that I wrote it (Computer Privacy Annoyances, available on this very site and at fine bookstores everywhere). OK, maybe I'm not so modest.
Seriously, give this book a look. If you aspire to write, it belongs on your desk between Strunk and White's Elements of Style and Roget's Thesaurus. If you just love words, put it on your coffee table, or in the bath. You'll find it hard to put down.
Great gift for crossword puzzlers........2005-12-24
My mom is a habitual crossword player, and this turned out to be the perfect gift for her.
This book is an amazing collection of unusual words including their definition, pronunciation and use in a sentence. It's like the author took a dictionary, removed all the words you already know, and left only those odd words you never knew existed. Great stuff and very handy.
Book Description
The Handbag ia a witty and informative celebration of this indispensable defining accessory.
Customer Reviews:
Nice bags.......2001-08-14
This book gives a nice rundown of different handbag styles, and designers. It's simple and slightly informative. I mainly wanted the book for pictures and inspiration, which it gave me. I enjoyed the section that goes over the types of handbags, just because I was clueless as to their names and such. Overall, I was pleased.

This book examines globalization and North-South relations.
Book Description
This book offers a penetrating view of the morals and values that shape the Korean business personality; cultural "keys" that turn Koreans on and off, and how best to communicate with them.
Korean Business Etiquette will show what really makes Korean workers tick-and how to do business the Korean way. With its authoritative scholarship, practical insights, and guidelines for foreign workers, this book is truly a "must read" for anyone doing business in Korea now or in the future.
Customer Reviews:
Great primer and reference for business in Korea.......2007-01-10
This is a "must read" for Westerners unfamiliar with Korean business culture. It is well written in short, easily absorbed chapters. Mr. De Mente does a great job introducing Korean culture, and explaining how that culture is manifest in the workplace. There is an emphasis on recommendations for Westerners living and working long term in Korea. It also works well for Sales and Procurement professionals.
Easy Reading; Straight to the Point.......2006-11-03
Very good book. I work in a Korean Co. Very usefull points. Great opportunity to know in theory what I faced in practical reality. Lots of things are clearer now...! A very good book for starters in Korean culture interface. Covers from general aspects to details of daily situations. Easy to read. Subjects and capters ordered very well. A must-have-book for those who intend to work in Korea or in Korean Companies abroad. I strongly recommend. AV.

Book Description
The Korean culture and the impact of the geopolitical environment of the Korean peninsula have produced a unique behavioral pattern in both managers and workers. It is necessary to understand this behavioral pattern in order to understand the Korean management system that has played such a major role in contributing to the phenomenal economic achievement of the Korean business community. Entrepreneurs, top executives, managers and workers are all integral parts of the management system, and their performance is given an in-depth analysis. After introducing the reader to the Chinese and Japanese cultures that share a common Oriental heritage with the Korean culture, the authors discuss the geopolitical influences of the major powers: China, Russia, Japan, and the United States. The Koreans first learned modern management principles from the Japanese, and following World War II, from the Americans. Later, the Korean government actively supported businesses' survival and prosperity. The various entrepreneurial management styles influence the development of Korea's modern managers as well. The impact of the group and individual behavior of Koreans, the evolution of the chaebol, the management of human resources, and the Office of Planning and Control are explored in depth. The very special ethical issues that surround Korean business dealings are also given particular attention. Top executives, managers, and entrepreneurs doing business in Korea or with Korean businessmen will be interested in this book's discussion of the Korean management system. This book will make excellent supplemental reading material in international business, human resource, and strategic management courses.
Product Description
Packed with proven, real-world information, this practical knowledge bridges the cultural gap that obstructs successful business relationships.
The modern international business environment demands increased cultural awareness. Everyday, talented businessmen lose money, time, and miss valuable business opportunities because they can't work effectively with their Korean counterparts. The frustration that develops, and the money often lost, is too frequently the result of cultural ineffectiveness. Whether Westerners are on their first trip to Korea or they've visited here for years, chances are they've found working in this wonderful country, at times, as puzzling as it is intriguing. The book is intended to provide background of Korea, and answers to many of those questions, that may have stirred inside foreigners, about working and living in Korea.
Customer Reviews:
Good general guide for the rookie foreign business person.......2001-01-08
This is an excellent book for business people who have no knowledge of Korea. About half of the book covers important cultural and business-related information, while the rest discusses basic geographic/demographic info, history, housing, transportation, and language. It's 1994 publication still makes it a fairly accurate source, and the topics are presented quite well. This book may be a tad superfluous for the old Korea hand who is interested solely in studying the business culture, however, and the cost appears seems somewhat high considering that it is only 187 pages in length. But, for a subject with very limited related material out there it is definitely at the top of the pile in terms of quality.

This is a good reference book if you go to South Korea for business or do business with Koreans in your own country. If you would like a book with more information and references, than I would recommend the book Korean Etiquette & Ethics in Business by Boye Lafayette De Mente. This book goes indepth with the Korean national character, its tradition and the personal coonnections that are essential to Koreans.

An excellent field research of an economic organization.......2004-04-11
The author's study of a South Korean business group intends to pay its special attention to "everyday white-collar business practices" and white-collar workers' "opinions" (p. 16). In this course, the author(s) tries to figures out what kinds of control over those workers are practiced and institutionalized not only by the economic organization and its owener-manager, but also by the national political economy of South Korea and international relations. And he also does not miss the reactions by the workers to the controls. Thus, this book is an ethnographic study about controls and reactions in a Korean economic organization.
As for his theoretical standing, in the beginning two chapters, the author criticizes both cultural and economic determinism. Even he is self-conscious of his possible motivation behind his own study of this topic, which seems very impressive because of his frankness (p. 14). Other researchers or writers may have different views on this positioning than his, or they just may not be so consciously frank like him. This is a merit of ethnographic studies in general and above all of a especially thoughtful ethnographer. This is really one of the excellent ethnographic studies of workers in an economic organization in South Korea. You should read the tile 'making capitalism' not in the sense of the origin or beginning but in that of reproducing in this book, because the title may be able to misreading for some who did not start reading this book.

Book Description
During the 1990s the Korean economy became widely regarded as a possible "role model" to be followed by other newly industrializing economies, but the "Asian Crisis" of 1997 destroyed this image. Past practices, challenges and responses are explored in this collection by an international group of authors, many of them Korean. The contributors discuss concepts across a range of international discourse, including entrepreneurial behaviour, corporate culture, change, people management and inward investment. The volume contains a wide variety of material, with a broad spread of studies and research. This book aims to provide a more detailed and sophisticated picture of Korean management and business, its organization, practices and changes, than is too often presented.
