Three individually published volumes in the Past Masters Series are now published together. Written by three authorities on their subjects, this volume offers a very good balance between the lives and the work of three great economists. Indispensable for the beginner, the three essays are original scholarly contributions to the history of economic thought. They are also a delight to read.

Six Sigma is a very good methodology but expensive and difficult to apply in many cases. This book gives an approach that can be employed by organizations with limited resources. Some good features about the book-- practical tips from a wide variety of experiences, addressing process change after improvements have been made, and dealing with political, social and cultural factors that restrict and affect change. The authors clearly have had a wide range of different companies to draw upon. Many six sigma books offer only methods that apply to someone with a lot of resources--this book is much more realistic. The book has separate chapters dealing with management, business, and work issues as well. Easy to read.

I have long been awaiting a comprehensive text on developmental cognitive neuroscience. This book contains 41 superb articles, convering a variety of areas from neurobiology to language and cognition. It is a very good book for those wanting a quick introduction to this field. A very enjoyable book to read!

Brief, informative overview.......2002-05-13

This book is readable and decently-written. I found myself wishing for more in-depth information. The book is illustrated with good-quality drawings. I enjoyed it, but craved more depth. Probably unrealistic of me to expect it from a book with 150 or so pages of text.

The book has a brief coverage of relevant Indian legends, a surprising amount of information on details of the different species of prairie dog, how the prairie dog fits into the ecosystem, and decent coverage of animals with close ties, such as the black-footed ferret. The main place I felt "shorted" is the brief coverage of prairie dog behavior.

A highly enjoyable, information-packed book Prairie Dogs is enthusiastically recommended reading for anyone with an interest in these sociable, energetic creatures and a welcome addition to school and community library wildlife reference collections.

If you swim, you should get this book........1998-08-24

I've been a regualr swimmer for about 30 years - 4 to 5 times a week, an hour or so each time. About 2 years ago, a friend gave me a book about the Alexander Technique to read, saying it might be of interest to me and my swimming. I was quite interested and managed to attend a workshop where I got some hands-on experience with the work. One evening, a group of us went to the pool with one of the teachers and she showed us how to apply some of the ideas to swimming.

I couldn't believe how much of difference that little bit of information made! I realized that I had been using too much, and the wrong kind of effort, particularly with my back stroke. I'd always loved to swim, and the feel of the water, but now swimming became a whole new experience for me. Much more fluid and with less effort, and yet just as invigorating. Several friends have commented on the change.

The Art of Swimming is, as far as I know, the only book devoted specifically to swimming and the Alexander Technique. I found it very readable and I think it would make a good introduction to the ideas of the Technique for swimmers. I'd also recommend the book that got me started by Rickover, called "Fitness Without Stress - A Guide to the Alexander Technique". Also a book called "The Authorised Summaries of the Four Books of F.M. Alexander". END

although the author has a fixation for weird sex deaths and spends more time then they are worth for an investigator in most areas, this is the best overall book i have seen for laying out a thorough investigation and peripheral issues. i wish more law enforcement officers used this book--rank, too--rank on a scene or in front of a camera can be like a bull in a china shop.

Talk about a disturbing book. This one will probably give you nightmares if you haven't desensitized yourself to violence yet. If your denial mechanism is in disrepair, you'd probably be best to avoid this book which is the "Bible" of crime scene investigation techniques. Extremely graphic photographs of murder and suicide victims along with a compelling forensic text with such chapters as 'The Homicide Crime Scene Search,' 'Estimating Time Of Death,' 'Modes Of Death,' 'Suicide Investigation,' and 'The Autopsy' makes this one of the most informative and disturbing books available. Highly Recommended!

In this appropriately named "Checklist and Field Guide" Vernon J. Geberth distills the complexities of criminal investigation into a series of helpful checklists and charts. The reading is informative (though not always engaging) and he provides a necessary resource for law enforcement personnel as well as a helpful guide for authors writing books involving criminal investigation or police procedures.

The latest edition of Practical Homicide Investigation, starts with reemphasizing the basics of homicide investigation, expands upon the coverage of practical methods of solving your murder cases and adds new information that addresses some of the newest, most crucial innovations of homicide investigation that will help us in our pursuit of justice for the victims and their surviving families. Even if you have memorized the first three editions, the 4th Edition of Practical Homicide Investigation needs to be on your "must read" list if you want to be an effective murder cop.

The textbook opens with the five components of practical homicide investigation and demonstrates the investigative strategies to be a successful homicide investigator. All of the great additions to the 4th Edition of Practical Homicide Investigation lead to the most remarkable point of all which is that Lt. Commander Geberth took the time to improve his book for us. It demonstrates his perpetual passion for the profession of homicide investigation and is why he is known internationally as "Mr. Murder." Even though the author's name is followed by the word "retired" in parenthesis, the truth is that Vernon Geberth may have retired from NYPD, but he has never retired from the business of being a murder cop. The fact that he continues to revise the Practical Homicide Investigation textbook is a testament to his dedication to solving homicides and an example that all of us in the business should strive to achieve.
