    Book Description

This third volume of the Handbook of Development Economics employs rigorous theoretical and empirical frameworks. It focuses on policy and includes material from unpublished and not generally available sources. In particular, it covers analytical and policy issues arising from the collapse of the paradigm of development based on import-substituting-industrialization in most developing countries; and the demise of centrally planned economies of
Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. The volume also deals with the increasing recognition of the importance of micro behavioral responses to a range of incentives and unobserved factors both for analysis and for policy formulation.
It discusses the ongoing process of economic reforms in developing countries by reducing state involvement in the economy through privatization, opening up the economy much more to foreign trade and investment and allowing market forces and the private sector to guide resource allocation to a much greater extent. As well as updating developments on topics which were included in the earlier volumes, this Handbook also includes different topics, such as econometric and
other empirical modeling tools for development analysis and the role of technology in the development process.

As in the previous volumes of the series, the chapters in this Handbook provide self-contained surveys summarizing not only received knowledge but also recent developments. Each chapter is also a definitive source, reference and teaching supplement for use by researchers and advanced graduate students.

Considered the definitive raptor identification guide for North America, this essential resource for birders includes photos and text for distinguishing between hawks, falcons, eagles, and vultures in the field, paying careful attention to plumage variations in juveniles and adults.

          Book Description

Whether soaring or perched, diurnal birds of prey often present challenging identification problems for the bird enthusiast. Variable plumage, color morphs, and unique individual characteristics are just some of the factors bird watchers must consider when identifying the different species. In this authoritative reference, two of the world's top experts on raptors provide an essential guide to the variations in the species, allowing for easier recognition of key identification points. All the distinguishing marks described have been exhaustively tested in a wide range of field conditions by the authors as well as the colleagues and students who have learned from them.

4 out of 5 stars Finally, a useable book for raptor id.......2007-03-10

Being a naturalist from the age of seven or so, I have long been a keen observer of birds with particular attention paid to the raptors and soaring birds. All the books I had previously owned or seen about raptors stop far short of giving the info necessary for identifying the hawks and eagles of various ages and genders, as many of them will resemble another breed at various levels of maturity and in different seasons. This book almost eliminates those problems, giving excellent photos and descriptions that enable positive identification provided the observer gets a good enough look at the bird. It also provides useable field id pointers that will eliminate many questions with only a "sketchy" look at a flying or sitting raptor.
A good book that should sit on the front seat of any raptor friend's car; one that will be used time and again in the field.

5 out of 5 stars Soar With the Falcons!.......2007-01-18

This masterpiece is one of the best field guides for raptors in North America. Readers are treated to several pictures of each type of bird. Raptors are shown perched and in flight, face on and in side view. Readers also see the field markings on the birds which are fully explained in a clear, direct way. A guide to helping readers identify the differences among the raptors is also provided. This is an excellent, outstanding work.

5 out of 5 stars Hawks and Birds of Prey.......2006-02-25

This is by far the very best book I have ever seen. The photos and details are just Great. I would advise anyone that watchs for these beautiful birds to have this as a guide!!

5 out of 5 stars A Photographic Guide to North American Raptors.......2003-03-11

This is the best photographic guide to north american raptors available. The photos are very clear so you can see details on plumage. It also includes multiple photos of the species that have morphs, which is very helpful in the field. This is not a book I would recommend if you are using it for written reference. But I give it 5 stars for a field reference guide!

5 out of 5 stars Useful field guide, shows variability of morphs.......2001-10-21

This is simply the best field guide for North American diurnal raptors that I have seen. Unlike some other photgraphic guides, it provides several images of each species in poses that one is likely to see in the field: perched and soaring from above and the side (showing field marks of top of wing and tail). It shows several examples of different morphs and ages for most birds. This is critical in understanding the variability in markings within a species. In addition, it has a section on field identification problems, detailing differences between similar looking birds. To my knowledge, there is no substitute.

However, the paperback version is somewhat cheaply produced. The publisher should improve the binding and the quality of paper for this book. Try not to get it wet.

                Book Description

George and the man with the yellow hat enjoy watching the winter sports competition. When they stop to warm up with some cocoa, George's curiosity about the racing equipment leads to some wild rides up and down the slopes. He creates quite a stir at the resort, and may even create a new sport! The adventures of Curious George continue in an all-new series beginning in fall 1998 with eight new stories. Written and illustrated in the style of Margret and H. A. Rey, the books appear in paperback (8 x 8") and hardcover editions and feature the art of Vipah Interactive, the animators of HMI's Curious George CD-ROMs.

2 out of 5 stars guess the illustartor?.......2007-10-06

Though not as bad as the books with illustrations exerpted from the movie, this book is illustrated in the STYLE of H.A. Rey, by Vipah Interactive. Somehow, somewhere these books have lost the charm of the originals. I would have liked to know this before buying them. My kids still like them; I am horrified.

5 out of 5 stars My Whole Family Loves This Book.......2004-08-10

This story is delightful. We bought it because we were taking our 2.5 yr old along on a ski trip and wanted him to have a silly little story that related to the mountain and skiing (even though he's not on skis yet). Well, it is just that... and more. He's learned a lot, developed an interest in skiing (maybe next year) and always gets a good laugh out of this book! It's also fun that George seems to invent snowboarding - my husband and I got a big kick out of that and have shared the story with many adult friends (isn't everyone a Curious Geroge fan?)!
IMPORTANT: The structure of the story and the illustrations maintain the integrity of the original series!!

                Book Description

Of all the memorable images from the Nagano Winter Olympics, few are as endearing as those of the snow monkeys frolicking on the hillsides and winning hearts the world over. Now wildlife photographer Mitsuaki Iwago has turned his eye to these enchanting primates. Pink-faced with shaggy gray fur, snow monkeys are among nature's most curious creatures, but until now have not received thorough photographic attention. Considered national treasures in Japan, they live in the snowy mountain forests and love to play. Snow Monkeys begins with a series of astounding photographs of the monkeys cavorting with snowballs, climbing trees, and happily roughhousing. They also love to make a splash in Japan's many natural hot springs. (So much so, that once when Iwago was enjoying a dip, one of the monkeys joined him!) Snow Monkeys provides a rare glimpse of these amusing and marvelously photogenic creatures.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent photographic account of snow monkeys........1999-12-21

As a photographic journal of the Japanese snow monkeys, this book is first rate. The photographs are stunning and cover every aspect of the snow monkey's fascinating communal life. If you are looking for a more scholarly work with scientific details, then this book won't fit that bill. However, having been to the monkey reserve in Nagano, Japan, I can say that the photographs capture the monkeys' daily life in a vivid, unforgettable way. There is a brief narrative text that helps bind the themes of the photographs together, but the photographs truly speak for themselves. The authors should be commended for their liberal use of these beautiful color photographs.

5 out of 5 stars These monkey will touch your heart & make you laugh.......1999-08-23

This book tells the story of a year in the life of a troop of Japanese snow monkeys, as they cope with the seasons and raise their families. The often humorous and sometimes touching images will steal your heart away.

The adorable monkeys dance in the snow & bask in the sun. They climb & swing from trees. They chew leaves & joyfully play with snowballs. They splash in the water & meticulously groom each other.

The young cuddle in their mother's arms & suckle at a their breast. Their almost human-like expressions and actions are captivating. You feel like you are in personal contact with the monkeys as you flip the color photo packed pages.

As a bonus, pictures of a wide array of Japanese monkeys as well as information on their distribution, diet, & social life are located in the back This book is a great way to get a close-up look at the snow monkeys & experience their lives.

Monkey Business blows Debra Blum's Monkey Wars out of the water. Where Blum tries to appear unbiased by giving equal space to activists and vivisectors, Guillermo demonstrates that NIH and its vivisectors are scum by recounting the details of their repeated lies to Congress and their sordid back-room plots to keep a few tortured monkeys from ever seeing the sky or smelling fresh air.

No one who reads her account can have any doubt that the NIH should be gutted and massively reformed, or sadly, that Congress is incapable of doing so.

If you want to hold on to some illusion that our government will ever act openly, with honesty, or cares one whit about curing human disease or the humane treatment of animals, don't read this book.

I read this book while in juvenile detention waiting to be placed in a foster home. It was given to me by a vegan employee. I wasn't going anywhere so I though "why not?" I was vegetarian at the time (for health reasons only), but knew and cared nothing about animal rights. Reading this book compelled me to be otherwise. Additionally, for those of you who think that PETA is just a bunch of hippie wackos - read this. This book is also about the founding of PETA and you will soon find out they are nothing more than people who love animals.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for All Animal Lovers.......1999-11-03

No matter where you stand on the issue of animal rights, this book will give you a better understanding of the animal rights movement, and the case which launched the founding of PETA. It is very well written, describing in great detail the story of the Silver Spring monkey abuse case, in which an NIH-funded researcher, Edward Taub, was convicted of animal abuse for neglecting and abusing his research subjects. It is essential reading for animal lovers and anyone who is interested in animal rights and/or animal welfare. I found it easy to read, educational, and yet, disturbing.

2 out of 5 stars All's well that ends well?.......2000-04-03

As with all Curious George stories, I disagree with the generalmoral that this book carries. And that seems to be that all's wellthat ends well, or the end justifies the means. I disagree with this philosophy, and especially think it a bad philosophy to teach young children, who, due to their inexperience and lack of reference, need stricter boundaries than do adults or even adolescents. I give This book 2 stars, instead of just one, due to sentimental reasons, I suppose. Curious George was one of the first set of books I remember that had a little more vivid color than the standard red and black library books of my early youth. END

Compiled and edited by Rabbi Philip Lazowski (a Holocaust survivor), Understanding Your Neighbor's Faith: What Christians And Jews Should Know About Each Other offers readers diverse points of view with the goal of promoting better communication, tolerance, and acceptance. This is an anthology of essays and viewpoints contributed by learned clergymen of a variety of Judeo-Christian branches, each of whom explore difficult theological and practical issues in a straightforward question-and-answer style. An excellent resource for non-specialist general readers who seek to better understand Judeo-Christian religion in Western culture, or anyone simply curious of what their friends and neighbor believe; Understanding Your Neighbor's Faith is also recommended for theologists and religious service people seeking to explore and better acquaint themselves with differing perspectives arising from two great world faiths that stem from a common (albeit diverging) origin.
