Hidden Markov Models: Applications to Financial Economics (Advanced Studies in Theoretical and Applied Econometrics)
R. Bhar , and Shigeyuki Hamori Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1402078994 |
Book Description
Markov chains have increasingly become useful way of capturing stochastic nature of many economic and financial variables. Although the hidden Markov processes have been widely employed for some time in many engineering applications e.g. speech recognition, its effectiveness has now been recognized in areas of social science research as well. The main aim of Hidden Markov Models: Applications to Financial Economics is to make such techniques available to more researchers in financial economics. As such we only cover the necessary theoretical aspects in each chapter while focusing on real life applications using contemporary data mainly from OECD group of countries. The underlying assumption here is that the researchers in financial economics would be familiar with such application although empirical techniques would be more traditional econometrics. Keeping the application level in a more familiar level, we focus on the methodology based on hidden Markov processes. This will, we believe, help the reader to develop more in-depth understanding of the modeling issues thereby benefiting their future research.

Corporate Governance and the Timeliness of Change: Reorientation in 100 American Firms
Hugh Sherman , and Rajeswararao Chaganti Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1567200877 |
Book Description
The ability to implement change quickly is crucial to an organizations's success--not only in traditionally sedate industries, but also in today's fast-moving hi-tech ones. Sherman and Chaganti, from their study of 100 American corporations, half in stable industries, half in volatile ones, find that a firm's structure of governance bears heavily on the speed with which the firm can "reorient" itself. What are the characteristics of firms that change quickly? What inhibits others? And what, precisely, is the impact of a firm's stockholders, board and top management on its ability to adapt? Sherman and Chaganti provide answers to these and other questions, in the first book yet to focus entirely on the determinants of time in corporate reorientations. In order for a firm to develop or sustain a competitive advantage, it must not only adapt correctly to environmental change, but also adapt quickly. This study examines the factors associated with the time a firm takes to initiate "reorientation." The results of the research indicate that even in relatively large organizations, reorientations are not rare and occur routinely. Further, deterioration of a firm's financial condition tends to hasten its initiation of reorientation. However, the determinants of time taken to initiate reorientation differ in firms with relatively high prior performance and firms with relatively low prior performance.

Animals For Show And Pleasure In Ancient Rome
George Jennison Manufacturer: University of Pennsylvania Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0812219198 |
Book Description
Deadly combat between gladiators is perhaps the best-known example of public entertainment offered in the Roman world. Wild and domesticated animals were also a part of these extravagant shows, and the elaborate presentation--or sometimes butchery--of creatures to gild an official's magnificence was among the most common forms of public diversion. Pitting bulls against bears, lions against Christians and criminals, elephants against rhinoceroses or parading large numbers of giraffe or zebras, the games devised by the Romans ranged from astonishing to brutally cruel. It is now difficult to comprehend the pleasure that huge crowds took from the death or struggle of animals and people, but the history of the role of animals in ancient Rome is both fascinating and important in view of modern sports spectacles and the enjoyment we take in animals in our daily lives.Based entirely on primary source material and infused with the author's direct experience with many of the animals discussed, Animals for Show and Pleasure in Ancient Rome is a comprehensive investigation of the rise, function, and pageantry of wild and domesticated animals as household pets and as fodder for entertainment in the Roman world. Extending from Egypt through the Greek city-states to the magnificent coliseums of the golden age of Roman civilization, Jennison provides an absorbing, evocative, and in-depth history that includes information about what animals were known to the Romans, which creatures they liked best, which animals were used as pets, from what places they obtained animals and how much they cost, how they were trapped, and the architectural development and dispersion of arenas throughout the Roman world. Originally published in 1937, Animals for Show and Pleasure in Ancient Rome remains the authoritative work on the subject.

Learn from the pioneers of Customer Relationship Management.Download Description
"The One to One Manager" is specifically targeted to help managers and executives master the opportunities -- and obstacles -- they are likely encounter in increasing their company's "share of customer."A revolution is sweeping companies and organizations around the world as businesses shift from the notion of mass marketing to mass customization. Consequently, companies are evolving from traditional product-based enterprises to customer-focused, one-to-one enterprises that will allow them to develop longer-lasting, more profitable customer relationships. In "The One to One Manager, customer-relationship-management pioneers Don Peppers and Martha Rogers take readers behind the scenes of companies such as Xerox, Levi-Strauss, and American Airlines to show how managers and executives implement 1 to 1 programs to reshape their companies. Rather than relying on decentralized product lines, managers learn how to integrate services and customize products to meet the needs of individual customers. The book offers specific advice on how to make the transition to customer relationship management, and successfully deploy customer-centered behaviors in terms of sales, marketing, and service.

This is NOT the book the title suggests.......2004-03-27
What this book has is a number of marginally interesting mini-case histories "caselets" that convey only the basics of what was done, and nothing about the thought process used to develop the ideas or the issues that came up and were addressed in the implementation. A book with a quarter of the cases, but with substantially more detail would have been much more useful.

The good news is that, containing little but air for b-school types, it's a quick read. That gained it an extra star in my rating.

Deregulation and Development in Indonesia
Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275974073 |
Book Description
Of the developing nations of East Asia, Indonesia came relatively late to liberalizing its trade and investment regime. Only in the mid-1980s, when it was clear that oil revenues alone would not suffice and that a new engine of growth was needed, did the country's government swing behind a systematic deregulation effort. Tariffs were cut, non-tariff barriers were lowered, foreign investment restrictions were reduced, export promotion incentives were enhanced, and various financial sector regulations were eased. All this combined to spark a labor-intensive export-led economic boom that was accompanied by an expansion in wages and employment and a boost in productivity. This book documents how Indonesia truly became part of the East Asian miracle story starting in the mid-1980s. Destined to become a leading case study of export-led development in Indonesia, this book grew out of a World Bank/Indonesian Economic Society Symposium held in Jakarta. There was, however, a parallel story as well, of crony capitalism and weak governance, that led to the financial and political crisis of 1997-98. These aspects were reflected in continued protection of certain sectors where the cronies were active, in restrictions on domestic trade and competition that were left in place for their benefit, and in financial manipulations that were conducted to their advantage. These aspects are noted as well in the book and pulled together in the concluding chapter, which takes the story up through the crisis years to the present.
