Book review.......2006-08-14
The content of the book was a great resource for me in developing advanced strategies as a Business Systems Analysis. It provides clear cut details that can be applied effectively and economically.
Time and cost are important factors in each project in order to get beyond the feasibility report, and the outlined process helps in creating this most important document.
If you use the SDLC and TQM methodology in your business practice, then this manual is a priceless asset.
Mandatory reading for every raising star!.......1999-04-30
"Business Systems Engineering" is an excellent resource for anyone interested in creating a world class organization. The tools of business systems engineering allows you to transform a company into a learning organization capable of strategic change and excellence. The emphasis on "adult learning theory" and its role in reengineering the work process is particularly refreshing. Because strategic change and leadership begins with learning, the emphasis on the work performed by cross-functional teams of employees is essential to creating a learning organization that can successfully respond to challenges in the marketplace. Case studies emphasize organizational learning and looking outside the box, and demonstrate the use of benchmarking to identify the best business practices and applying them to creating a competetive advantage. Watson's holistic view of business systems as open systems that are capable of improvement, easily promotes the integration of TQM principles and the use of information technology. The result of this synthesis is the business system engineering model. The model allows you to transform your organization without sacrificing your focus on quality or the customer, and is adaptable to any business. It also helps you to realize the value of employee training to support change initiatives for profit. If a change in your organization's culture is the prescription, then Business Systems Engineering is the treatment.

Book Description
The structural and functional importance of the correct patterns of DNA methylation in all parts of a mammalian genome is, unfortunately, not well understood. The stability, inheritability, and developmental flexibility of these patterns all point to a major role that these patterns appear to play in determining structure and funtion of the genome. Up to the present time, studies on the repetitive sequences, which comprise more than 90 per cent of the DNA sequences in the human or other genomes, have been neglected.

Book Description
Ernie Els is one of the most established names in world golf. Since sensationally capturing the 1994 US Open at the age of 24, he has recorded a string of victories, and it's all been achieved with one of the most elegant and classic swings on tour. In this book, the two-time US Open champion offers advice to the average club golfer on the basic fundamentals of grip and posture, before teaching us how to build the classic swing for which he is so famous.
- A practical guide to developing a better, more effective swing to help you improve your performance from tee to green
- Every club in the bag receives the full treatment, from the driver to short irons
- Special chapters on tackling long bunker shots; getting more distance out of your drives; and shaping the ball in the air
- Fully illustrated with specially commissioned color photography
Customer Reviews:
Need help with your swing? .......2007-10-07
Then buy this book. Ernie does a great job of taking you through the basic stages of the golf swing. Then he shows you how to use your new swing on your irons and then wedges. He even teaches you to fade and draw the ball before he finishes up. It's not too technical as some books can get and is explained in easy to understand language. The best part is the illustrations. Nearly every swing stage has pictures taken from multiple angles to drive home the points. Buy this book and see your golf score go down.
Ernie writes from the perspective of the Big Guy.......2007-08-08
Ernie writes from the perspective of the Big Guy. Big Guy's -- over 6'2" and 200 pounds -- need to control their power and weight more than they need to generate distance.
A Big Guy would find no better place to start than with Ernie's book. I recommend reading once carefully, and then returning to the chapters every once in a while, as you work on the different aspects of your game.
One caveat: Since Ernie advocates keeping the club low to the ground for as long as possible on the back swing, and then "sweeping" the ground during the downswing, you will have an initial "loss of distance" if you emulate Ernie's swing. Also, Ernie suggests a slower tempo than others do, so this will also cut down on your distance.
With practice, however, you will learn how to get more weight behind the ball and more of a left shoulder turn, which should bring back the distance.
The point is that you will start hitting more fairways, and you will get less "wild."
Excellent Book that helped me with my pitch........2006-12-15
I like this book because of its approachable format. It has clear explanations that are well illustrated with photos of Ernie in the various stages of each swing. The book separates the woods, long irons, short irons and pitching. In this sense it is really an explanation of the finer points of four different swings.
I have put into practice the knowledge I gained concerning pitching; an area of golf that has been particularly troublesome for me. He explains that it is really a very different swing to the full swing, and gives a clear, rational and effective insight into the pitch. Finally my short game has come good and I can see the way forward in the finesse pitch that will give me a new weapon under 100 yards from the pin.
The full swing is covered very well with plenty of clear, realistic and logical advise. I find I am thinking about the long and shot shots with much more understanding of the interdependence of the body turn, swing path of the club and unleashing of power at impact.
Ernie has one of the most, if not the most, elegant swings in golf. I am sure that the effortless appearance of his swing is a result of extraordinary co-ordination and effieciency of movement. I hope that my swing may someday look fluid and clean like Ernie's and recommend this book to anyone who wants to model their game on his swing.
Whilst I can not speak as an expert on golf, I would imagine this book would be as valuable for single figure golfers as it is for a high handicappers like me.
This book is better than many of the bestselling golf instruction books and DVD's I have read, or seen, because it is not overly technical.
I highly recommend it.
One of the best golf books around........2006-04-30
I've been at this wonderful game of golf for over 10 years and of all of the books I've read this is, by virtue of its refreshingly sound simplicity, the absolute best. What I like is that if doesn't follow the convention of the vast majority of instructional books out there that expect the reader to have a million swing thoughts to get the job done. Guys like Peltz and Ledbetter do offer great advice but Ernie Els points to the most valuable aspects of building a swing and hammers and hammers the point home to the reader on how essential they are. These are why Ernie Els has THE sweetest golf swing on the tour. It is a work of art. It's not the controlled power swing of Tiger who's textbook swing is anything but voilent, but one that is as deliberate as it is precise. It is the result of paying attention to the basics. In this book, El's points to the importance of fundementals. I mean, he REALLY emphasizes their importance as the foundation to building a great, sound swing. It may come across as oversimplified but the advice he gives on grip, rhythm, posture, and aim is put forth in an almost Zen-like fashion. Readers are expected to pay attention to these seemingly mundane fundamentals everytime they step up to the ball. According to Els, the rest will follow from there and after following his sage advice, I've found that he is absolutely right. Now the reader that complained that the advice is not easy to implement is wrong. He is missing the point of the book. El's is not trying to tell you how to swing like him, he's telling how you can build your own "classic" swing but the way I see it, you have to decide if you are patient, as well as disciplined, enough to do what he tells you. Trust me, it worked miracles with my game and it most definitely can with yours.
excellent tips.......2005-01-31
This is an informative and well-written book on how to build a classic golf swing. It covers every club in the bag and gives the reader some excellent tips to develop a classic and consistent swing.
Book Description
Two of Chomsky's most famous and accessible works available in an affordable and attractive edition.
Described by the New York Times as "arguably the most important intellectual alive," Noam Chomsky is known throughout the world for his highly influential writings on language and politics. Featuring two of Chomsky's most popular and enduring books in one omnibus volume, On Language contains some of the noted linguist and political critic's most informal and accessible work to date, making it an ideal introduction to his thought.
In Part I, Language and Responsibility (1979), Chomsky presents a fascinating self-portrait of his political, moral, and linguistic thinking through a series of interviews with Mitsou Ronat, the noted French linguist. In Part II, Reflections on Language (1975), Chomsky explores the more general implications of the study of language and offers incisive analyses of the controversies among psychologists, philosophers, and linguists over fundamental questions of language.
Customer Reviews:
Two Classics.......2006-03-21
Noam Chomsky is a renowned linguist who has taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1955. He developed a theory of transformation grammar which has changed the study of language. He is also very active in politics and has several books on a variety of political issues. "On Language" contains two of Chomsky's classic works, "Language and Responsibility", and "Reflections on Language", and while these books deal mainly with Linguistics, there are a couple of sections which cover his political thought.
"Language and Responsibility" was first published in 1977 in France and 1979 in the U.S., and it is a conversation between Chomsky and Mitsou Ronat, the French transformationalist. While the conversation opens with politics, the greater portion of this book is about Generative Grammar.
"Reflections on Language" was first published in 1975 and is an important work in the field of Linguistics. The section titled "Problems and Mysteries in the Study of Human Language" covers interesting aspects such as the philosophy of language and the acquisition of language. Chomsky also spends some time discussing other Linguistic works and where he agrees and disagrees with them.
This book would not make a good choice for someone unfamiliar with Linguistics. However, the "Language and Responsibility" section does serve as an excellent introduction to Chomsky and his thoughts. While one may not agree with all of his political positions, Chomsky does provide some excellent points and forces the reader to re-examine their own position. His Linguistic theories are important to any study of the subject, and "Reflections on Language" is probably the best way to learn about his position.

A step by step process for Customer Value Management.......2006-03-04
Customers can get just about any product they want from a choice of producers at about the same price. The days in which you could compete for customers by price or uniqueness of product are over. If you want to be able to distinguish yourself from your competitors, you will need to do so by offering superior service, by giving the customer exactly what he wants, when he wants it.
To do this, your organization will need to become customer-centered. Harvey Thompson outlines a step-by-step process called Customer Value Management (CVM), to organize your company around the needs of your customers. CVM requires you to take an outside-in (instead of an internally driven) perspective of what the customer wants. To do this you must be able to identify:
· What the customer gets out of interactions with your company
· The minimum value needed to retain customers
· The optimal value level the customer imagines
· The customer's vision of the ideal company, delivering ideal value
The steps needed to implement Customer Value Management are:
1. Visioning: Let customers set the goals. Traditional management starts with where you want to be and how to get there. However, these are your objectives, not your customers'.
2. Focus: Listen to the right customers. Market to desirable market segments, instead of trying to be all things to all customers.
3. Scope: Focus on improving the interactions with the customer that will have the most impact on retention and growth.
4. Value: Keep tabs on customer expectations of value, so that you can exceed them whenever possible.
5. Prioritization: Make investment decisions based on buying behavior. Know which customer needs will boost your bottom-line.
6. Design: Align your infrastructure and capabilities to meet customer needs.
7. Implementation and Maintenance: Take a holistic approach, incorporating customer-centeredness into your company's values, vision and mission.
A Good Read!.......2001-05-30
The person with the cash in hand is the real boss, according to Harvey Thompson, proponent of Customer Value Management (CVM). You can make your company more customer-driven using CVM, which he developed at IBM and then implemented at other U.S. and international companies. Thompson identifies the customer's vision of ideal value, and tells businesses to use that as their guiding star. If you can integrate the best customer value in every system, your company can retain customers, sell more and increase profits. This is not a new theme, but Thompson takes it a little deeper than most as he discusses ways to strategically incorporate CVM, from top management to the front desk. If we were telling him about his reading customers, we'd ask him to shake some dust off the dense, academic language, but otherwise we... recommend to most business leaders this solid book about strategic customer management.
Explanation, instruction, examples.......2001-04-01
A very solidly written look at the Customer Value Management system-- complete with explanation, examples, and exercises that can be applied by the reader. Thompson makes the critical and, in my experience, all-too-misunderstood point that while using customer input in product development has long been a fact within companies, positioning the things a customer values at the center of developing services and processes is not standard in most industries. And it should be.
The distinction in the Kano framework between basic expectations, satisfiers, and attractors is very well explained here and put in the kind of way that should make consultants and managers alike understand its relevance to their clients and companies. I've far too often seen clients trying to overperform on aspects of service where they just should be looking for parity and the requirements of most projects do not have a good way of seeing the difference between what their customers find simply nice to have and between the aspects of service that will truly drive the decision to buy from or remain a customer of the company in question.
Highly recommended.
Holisitc approach!!.......2000-10-15
Mr. Thompson really shows us the whole meaning of Customer Value, teaching about the linkages between customer targeting, process, organization and technology. The way he drives us in the real world while he focus on what is important (high ROI) and what is less important, is a very valuable driver to the correct use of the scarce resources (human, assets and dollars) to sustain and growth the business dramatically. This metholodogy, applied with success in IBM and in many other companies around the world, demostrates that is not a mere theory but a real life experience. Strongly recommended to be used as an educational material and as a base in a your methodological project approach. World class reading.
Great advice for making and keeping your customers happy.......2000-07-01
Companies have known for years that customer loyalty is key to their success, but the way to foster that loyalty has perhaps been missed. By shifting management's focus away from internal issues and onto the customer's desires and concerns, Thompson has given businesses not only a way to survive, but to thrive in rapidly changing times. The anecdotal information about IBM is fascinating and timely. When it seems all else about the business world is changing, Thompson has hit on the one stable premise: make the customer happy and he or she will be back. Highly recommended for any businessperson interested in their company's success, and their success in the company.

Book Description
What impact do international economic inputs have on human rights in Third World nations? William Meyer explores the effects of direct investment by U.S. multinational corporations, economic and military aid, and MNC manufacturing plants. He examines the international political economy of human rights at both the national and the international levels. Case studies are combined with quantitative studies that use aggregate cross-national data. Theories that link MNCs to human rights are subjected to empirical testing. As Meyer illustrates, at the national level, human rights violations are associated with US MNCs in Chile, Honduras, India, Indonesia, and Mexico. MNCs have been especially guilty of violating labor rights, particularly through their reliance on sweatshops. MNCs have also been responsible for widespread pollution and environmental degradation. At a broader international level, increased investment by MNCs tends to go along with human rights improvements in the Third World as a whole. Meyer shows that there is a broad positive relationship between direct investment by MNCs and broader political rights and improved living standards. Aggregate data are also analyzed for human rights as compared to U.S. economic and military aid. Economic aid is found to be associated with improved civil-political rights and improved socioeconomic rights. Military aid, by contrast, is associated with declining levels of civil rights and with lower levels of social welfare.

Making the US trade policymaking process democratic.......2007-01-18
The breakdown in consensus around the US trade agenda has brought the visions of business and labor in conflict risking the loss of benefit from ongoing trade liberalization. Since the partisan and one-sided wrangling in US Congress about the merits and demerits of trade cannot be won, there is a need for "further democratization of US trade policy" (p. 14). This paper - Democratizing US trade policy - looks at the need for a change, its challenges and prospects.
There is a need for a change because trade policy-making is presently unable "to broker a compromise" between unfettered trade beloved by the business community when it is in a winning position, and almost always bemoaned by labor for fear it will lead to domestic job loss to foreigners. A new approach is necessary for the national good since, as the US economy globalizes, many an American life increasingly depend on the global economy. At this same the American populace is conflicted about trade, not so much about its beneficial impacts, but more so about its corresponding costs and whether or not they can be justified. Obviously it is good to wear nice shoes for a penny; it is quite a different thing if an American worker loses his/her job because of it, or a poor foreign worker is exploited by sweatshops to produce a cheap shoe.
This book sees four steps that must be taken toward democratizing US trade policy: (a) giving equal weight to globalization, and stressing fairness in the distribution of the net gains from globalization; (b) increasing the number of stakeholders in the policy-making process; (c ) opening up the policy process to the public (transparency); and (d) making the process consistent with national interest (accountability). The four steps together suggest that successful policy is a function of process.
The process depends on power and authority, i.e., power to decide, power to be present , and power to be represented. Historically authority has alternated between the US President and US Congress, with the effect that "there have been periods of both close institutional cooperation and increased friction" (p.12). Recently there has been more discord than cooperation both across political parties and between the President and Congress. Moreover, the domestic policy process has evolved along with changes in the international process. One can argue that US domestic trade policy is a function of both the domestic and international processes.
If the democratization of US trade policy depends on domestic and international authorities, how can the balance be redressed? Domestically that is a very difficult question to answer because Congress has constitutional authority over international commerce, while the President has influence through his Trade Representative. The authors offer three possible solutions: (a) establishing a congressional trade office, instead of the costly committees that Congress normally uses; (b) appointing congressional trade advisers; and (c ) creating a joint (President-Congress) fast-track trade-negotiating authority. Solutions (a) and (b) essentially get rid of weaken the President's fast-track ability; and (c ) requires constitutional change. In all three cases, the lines may already be drawn in the sand.
The book anticipates these problems in recognizing that trade policy processes are now influenced more by domestic and international regulatory environments than by physical restrictions, such as tariffs. A feasible remedy is regulatory convergence. But regulatory convergence would require democratization of international institutions as well, among them the World Trade Organization (WTO), the IMF, the World Bank, and the rest. This is not cake-cutting, and there are a lot of grounds to protect here.
In the end the paper succeeds in stating the problem and urging its solution. The general idea that the solution lies in democratizing trade policy is also good. Now whether that solution can be brought about by "broadening the input", as argued on page 53ff, is less convincing. The mechanisms recommended for broadening the input appear to justify enlarging government's role in the trade regime. If so, increased government involvement question the feasibility of transparency and accountability. Indeed, it points out the ugly fact that deadweight losses due to imperfect trade policy will persist. Theses comments do not mean the paper is not worth reading; they only mean the problem is far from being solved.
